Tennis: Impeccable Murray sends Britain into Davis final

Posted:

GLASGOW (AFP) - Andy Murray fired Great Britain into a first Davis Cup final in 37 years after his victory over Bernard Tomic handed his side an unassailable 3-1 lead in their World Group semi-final clash against Australia. The world number three secured a final showdown against Belgium or Argentina in November with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 win over Tomic in the first reverse singles rubber to clinch the best-of-five tie after playing three days in succession at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. The 28-year-olds 25th win from 27 Davis Cup singles matches, which took under two hours, secured a first victory over old rivals Australia since 1978.It puts nine-times winners Britain on the verge of an historic first title triumph since 1936 when Fred Perry and Bunny Austin sealed a 3-2 victory over Australia at Wimbledon.Winning for your country and your team-mates means a lot. The crowd were unbelievable from the first ball to the last, Murray told the BBC.I didnt feel great the whole weekend to be honest, Ive been struggling with my back, but I just tried to disguise it.Great Britain captain Leon Smith hailed the impact of former Wimbledon and US Open champion Murray.Hes quite good isnt he? Its pretty amazing watching Andys work over the whole weekend, he fights so hard and hes got the quality. He executed it perfectly today.Britain have now become the first nation to defeat the three other Grand Slam nations in consecutive ties since they beat Australia, USA and France en route to winning the Davis Cup in 1933.It is a remarkable turnaround for a British team that have risen from being on the verge of relegation to Europe/Africa Group III, the lowest level of the competition, in 2010, to being World Group finalists in 2015.Murray, who won both singles matches and the doubles with brother Jamie, is now looking to become only the fourth player ever to win the Davis Cup, Olympic gold and multiple Grand Slams.Australia were looking to reach their first Davis Cup final since winning the trophy for a 28th time in 2003.Australian captain Wally Masur had hinted on Saturday he was thinking of throwing veteran Lleyton Hewitt in against the two-time Grand Slam winner to see if the former world number one could deliver a famous victory. However, he opted to keep faith with world number 23 Tomic, who had delivered success in his opening singles encounter with Dan Evans on Friday.Murray opened the tie with an ace and it set the tone for the early part of the set as some incredible returns saw him break Tomic in the fourth game.Murray survived one break point as he was serving for the set at 5-3, but a double fault followed by an unforced error allowed Tomic to break back. However, Murray recovered and with Tomic serving to send the set into a tie-break, the Brit found himself with three set points. The 22-year-old Australian saved the first two but a brilliant drop shot left Tomic stranded and sealed the first set for Murray. The two-time Grand Slam winner at times appeared unplayable in the second set. After breaking the Tomic serve early on, Murray held his service game to love to seal the second set 6-3.With the finishing line in sight, Murray found some extra reserves to step up a gear in the third set and twice broke Tomic to serve for the match with his opponent sending a return wide to seal the win and send the home crowd wide.

Tennis: Federer casts doubt over Davis Cup future

PARIS (AFP) - Roger Federer cast doubt on his Davis Cup future on Sunday after helping Switzerland retain their place in the World Group for 2016 by defeating the Netherlands.Federer, the 17-time Grand Slam title winner, defeated Thiemo de Bakker 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Swiss the winning point in their play-off in Geneva. But the 34-year-old, who led Switzerland to a first Davis Cup title in 2014, then hinted that he was rethinking his future in the tournament after a 16-year career. My idea was never to win it twice, the idea was always to win it once, Federer told www.daviscup.com.I see this tie in isolation. Next year is an Olympic year. The summer will be very long and packed with highlights. Its all a question of priorities. I cant play everything and of course if I do play Davis Cup other things have to drop out.

Tennis: Top seeds Czech storm past India into World Group

NEW DELHI (AFP) - The Czech Republic stormed into the elite World Group on Sunday after Jiri Vesely thrashed Indias Yuki Bhambri in the deciding reverse singles for a 3-1 victory in the Davis Cup playoff.Vesely, the world number 40, kept his cool in the sweltering heat for an emphatic 6-3 7-5 6-2 win over Indias number one player at New Delhis R. K. Khanna stadium. The win helped seal the tie for the visitors, who were level following the opening singles on Friday and who won the doubles on Saturday. The teams decided not to play the last reverse singles scheduled for later Sunday because of the hot and humid conditions. It was very, very hard to play in these conditions, Vesely said after the game. The Indian team chose just the right place to play the games. We just fought through... I was very (determined) to make my country happy.India had managed to equalise 1-1 on Friday after the unfancied Somdev Devvarman shocked Vesely in the second singles. But on Saturday the star pair of Leander Paes, fresh from his mixed doubles win at the US Open, and Rohan Bopanna lost to Radek Stepanek and Adam Pavlasek, handing the visitors a 2-1 lead.Sundays victory helped the three-time Davis Cup champions keep intact their record of not dropping outside the competitions elite since 2006.India, who last made it to the World Group in 2011, will now be relegated to play in the zonal competition.Throughout Sundays match Bhambri, ranked 125th in the world, failed to cash in on the home advantage and lost numerous points to unforced errors. He had five break points in the second set but failed to convert any.As the game closed in Bhambri lost his serve twice, allowing Vesely to take the set and the match, much to the disappointment of a noisy home crowd.

Tennis: Belgian Wickmayer takes Tokyo title

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Former US Open semi-finalist Yanina Wickmayer produced a superb fightback to beat Polands Magda Linette 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and win the Japan Womens Open on Sunday. The Belgian dug herself out of a hole in Tokyo as she claimed her first title of the year and fourth of her career, closing out the final in a shade under two hours and 10 minutes.Linettes bid for a first WTA Tour title began brightly, but her serve buckled under increasing pressure from Wickmayer in the second set and she failed to seriously trouble the Belgian in the decider.Wickmayer, who reached the 2009 US Open finals, had not won a tournament since 2010 but her form in Tokyo belied her world ranking of 86. Linette came into the match ranked two places higher than her opponent.Neither player was seeded, the hardcourt tournament quickly losing its top players to upset defeats while sentimental favourite Kimiko Date-Krumm, who turns 45 this month, bowed out in the second round.

Football: Martial sends Man Utd second, Liverpool held

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Teenage striker Anthony Martial further endeared himself to Manchester Uniteds supporters with a nerveless brace as his side came from behind to win 3-2 at Southampton on Sunday.Scorer of a memorable solo goal in last weekends 3-1 win over Liverpool, 19-year-old Martial struck either side of half-time at St Marys after Graziano Pelle had given Southampton a 13th-minute lead.Juan Mata added a third in the 68th minute and despite Pelle scoring again, United held on for a victory that propelled Louis van Gaals side up to second place in the Premier League table, two points below leaders Manchester City, who lost 2-1 at home to West Ham United on Saturday.Martial, who signed from Monaco on transfer deadline day for a reported initial fee of 36 million pound ($55 million, 49 million euros), started up front alongside Wayne Rooney, who returned following a hamstring injury.Southampton went ahead when Pelle followed in to score after Sadio Manes shot from James Ward-Prowses inviting right-wing cross had been parried by visiting goalkeeper David de Gea.Pelle hit the post moments later, but Martial equalised in the 34th minute, throwing Virgil van Dijk off balance with a neat Cruyff turn inside the box and slipping a shot beneath Maarten Stekelenburg. He put United ahead five minutes into the second half, seizing on a woeful Maya Yoshida back-pass and coolly beating Stekelenburg, before Mata slammed home after Memphis Depays shot came back off the post following a hypnotic 45-pass move. While Martial again stole the headlines, United were also indebted to De Gea, who produced a jaw-dropping one-handed save to claw a Jose Fonte header off the line when the score was 2-1.Pelle converted a cross from Mane with a well-placed header four minutes from time, but United survived.Uniteds old rivals Liverpool continue to struggle, having seen their run of league games without victory extended to four following a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City.Daniel Sturridge made his first appearance since April after hip surgery and his side went ahead in the 48th minute when Danny Ings, a half-time replacement for Christian Benteke, drilled home his first Liverpool goal. But Norwich equalised 13 minutes later courtesy of a deft lob by centre-back Russell Martin -- his third goal of the campaign. The result left Brendan Rodgerss Liverpool in 13th place, seven points below City, but a point above defending champions Chelsea, who beat Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday in a game that saw Gabriel and Santi Cazorla sent off for Arsene Wengers side.Earlier, Son Heung-mins first Premier League goal earned Tottenham Hotspur victory over Crystal Palace. The South Korea international struck in the 68th minute at White Hart Lane, moments after Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris had tipped a shot from Bakary Sako onto the post at the other end, to give the hosts a 1-0 win.Son has now scored three goals in two games, after his debut brace against Qarabag of Azerbaijan in the Europa League, and Spurs coach Mauricio Pochettino hailed his impact following his move from Bayer Leverkusen. When you sign players you expect them to make a big impact in the team. We are very happy with him, said the Argentine. He has adapted to the team very well. After scoring twice in the Europa League he scored again and when you arrive at the club as a striker, thats very good.It was Spurs first home win of the campaign and lifted Pochettinos side to ninth place in the table, below Alan Pardews Palace on goals scored.

Football: Messi double takes Barcelona back top of La Liga

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi scored twice and missed a penalty as Barcelona stretched their 100 percent record in La Liga to four games with a 4-1 win over Levante on Sunday. The European champions lead Real Madrid, Villarreal and Celta Vigo by two points with Atletico Madrid a point further adrift in fifth.Levante frustrated an experimental Barca side shorn of Luis Suarez from the start for 50 minutes before Marc Bartra settled the Catalans nerves from Messis cross. The floodgates then opened as Neymar doubled the advantage before Messi converted his first effort from the spot.Victor Casadesus pulled a goal back for Levante 24 minutes from time as he pounced on an error from Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.Messi then missed a penalty for the second time this season, but made amends with a stunning individual effort to round off the scoring. He isnt human because he scored two goals and provided an assist, Barca boss Luis Enrique joked when asked if Messis struggles from the spot proved he is fallible. There is very little that makes him seem human.Suarez missed out on Enriques starting line-up for the first time this season as he handed youngsters Sandro and Munir El Haddadi a rare start.Yet, both failed to impress as Levante comfortably kept Barca at bay during the first period and could even have taken a shock lead had Nabil Ghilas kept his composure instead of blazing wildly off target midway through the half.In the absence of Suarez and Andres Iniesta, Messi was playing in a deeper midfield role and it was his creativity that eventually undid Levante as Bartra controlled the Argentines inch-perfect cross before slotting past Ruben Martinez.Neymar added a second on 56 minutes when he squeezed the ball between the legs of two Levante defenders on the line for his second goal of the season.Messi then confidently dispatched his first effort from the penalty spot after Neymar had been tripped by Angel Trujillo.Ter Stegen has been handed his place in the side by an injury to Claudio Bravo, but the Germans recent struggles continued as he flapped at a Levante corner to gift Casadesus a goal back.Normal service appeared to be resumed when Messi was upended by Zou Feddal, but this time he blazed the ball high over the bar to take his tally of missed spot-kicks in his Barca career to 15 of the 65 he has taken.Yet, from open play Messi remains the most dangerous player in the world and he shrugged off that miss by dribbling past two Levante defenders before smashing in Barcas fourth of the night a minute from time.Earlier, Europa League holders Sevillas terrible start to their La Liga season continued as Celta Vigo climbed into fourth with a 2-1 win at the Sanchez Pizjuan.Villarreal moved into third with a convincing 3-1 win over a depleted Athletic Bilbao. And Sporting Gijon claimed their first victory since returning to the top flight with a 3-2 win in a thrilling encounter away at Deportivo la Coruna.

Golf: Australia's Jason Day grabs world number one ranking

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - Jason Day claimed his seventh USPGA Tour victory on Sunday to take over the world number one ranking, becoming the third player in as many weeks to capture golfs coveted top spot. The 27-year-old Australian went wire-to-wire, closing with his second straight two-under 69 to win by six strokes at the BMW Championship, the third of four tournaments in the FedEx Cup playoffs. All I want to do is win, said Day, who has won four of his last six tournaments, including his first major at last months PGA Championship. Yesterday and today was the toughest rounds I have ever had to play in my life.Day began his final round with a six-shot lead over a star-studded pack that included Rory McIlroy, who Day toppled from the number one spot, and US Open and Masters winner Jordan Spieth -- who was ranked second going into the event after trading the top spot with McIlroy.Several players tried to make a charge at Day on Sunday but the Queensland native wasnt going to wilt. He held them off by staying out of trouble and making sure he maintained his aggressive approach around the greens. He added a few birdies for good measure, like the one on the par-four 16th when he drained a 15-foot putt, and then on his closing hole to reach 22-under 262.Day said the 2015 Open Championship at St. Andrews in July was the spark he needed to get his mind focussed on winning consistently. Ever since the Open Championship something changed in my head and I felt like it was my time to start winning tournaments. Ever since then it has been a phenomenal run, said Day who was struck down at the US Open in June by ongoing vertigo issues.American Daniel Berger shot a 69 to finish in sole possession of second on 268 while Scott Piercy (70) finished solo third, seven strokes adrift of Day.McIlroy (70), JB Holmes (68) and Rickie Fowler (69) tied for third at 14-under 270.Spieth shot one-under 70 to finish tied for 13th.Day becomes the youngest Aussie to reach number one and the third in history behind Greg Norman and Adam Scott. It was also Days fifth win of 2015 as he joins Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh as the only players in the last 20 years to win at least that many in a season.Tomorrow I am going to become the number one player in the world. It has been an amazing ride, said Day, who now has a chance to pass Spieth for PGA Tour player of the year honours.Day had back to back 69s on the weekend after following up an opening round 10-under 61 with a 63 on Friday. He leads the point standings after winning two of four events in the FedEx Cup playoffs heading into the Tour Championship next week in Atlanta -- where a $10 million bonus is on offer to the playoff series winner.McIlroy had two birdies, two pars, an eagle and a bogey in his final six holes Sunday. He drew one of the biggest cheers of the day by draining a 25-foot birdie putt on 18 but it was also his last shot before giving way to Day as the world number one.

Golf: US tears turn to joy as Europe beaten in Solheim Cup

Posted:

HEIDELBERG (AFP) - After a dramatic, controversial and tearful final day, the USA defeated Europe on Sunday to win the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2009.Behind 10-6 going into the 12 singles -- the same score that Europe trailed the USA before coming back to win the Ryder Cup at Medinah in 2012 -- the US triumphed by a point, 14 1/2 to 13 1.2.Paula Creamer claimed the winning point in the final singles match with a 4 and 3 win over Sandra Gal. Earlier in the day, Alison Lee had been reduced to tears after her mistake controversially cost the United States a point as Europe led took a 10-6 lead following the delayed fourballs.Feeling hard done by, the USA found the extra inspiration to win 8 1/2 out of 12 singles points.Europe came close as American Gerina Piller had to hole a 12-foot par putt at the 18th to secure a vital full point against Caroline Masson, while Cristie Kerr, three down after four holes against Charley Hull, won six of the next eight holes to claim a 3 and 2 win.Creamer had the honour of clinching the Cup and finally breaking European hearts.USA Captain Juli Inkster was joyous. I am so proud of my team, she said. They all played great golf and showed great heart. I didnt really need to motivate them they were just all so determined to get the Cup back. The controversial incident definitely helped galvanise the visiting team. With three of the fourball matches held over from Saturday due to bad light, play started early with Europe winning one point and the USA taking another. The third and final match featuring Suzann Pettersen and Hull was all square with two holes to play against Lee and Brittany Lincicome.Lee missed her birdie putt and then assumed hat her next putt had been given and she picked up her ball. Hull was walking to the next tee, but Pettersen called the referee and pointed out that there had been no concession. That meant the US incurred a penalty stoke and so they lost the hole. Europe went on to win the point -- which would otherwise have gone the Americans way -- and emotions boiled over with both Lee and Hull in tears at the end. Pettersens action was backed by European captain Carin Koch. There was a rules meeting at the start of the week and the players knew they had to wait until a putt was conceded, said the Swede. We play by the rules. But Inkster was extremely bitter. I cant believe it, she said. Its not right to do that to your peers. Its disrespectful. But if thats the way they want to win. I just dont get it. I expected Carin to step in.In the singles, Karine Icher struck the first blow for Europe with a 3 and 2 win over Lincicome and Carlota Ciganda added another half point against Lexi Thompson in a classy top match that shared 14 birdies. But then the tide began to turn.Morgan Pressel claimed the first full point for the Americans with a final hole win over Catriona Matthew, who had only lost one of her seven previous Solheim singles matches. Europe hit back when Melissa Reid claimed a 2 and 1 win over Brittany Lang. It was an emotional win for the 28-year-old as her mother, Joy, was killed in a traffic accident while watching her daughter play in a tournament in Germany in 2012. I knew we needed this point, said the English woman after hugging her father, Brian, who survived the car crash. Its huge. I have a lot of credit to give to my family.Lee then got a smile on her face with a 3 and 1 win over Gwladys Nocera and more points followed for the USA from Piller, Michelle Wie, Lizette Salas, Angela Stanford, Cristie Kerr and, finally, Creamer.

Golf: Karlberg defeats Kaymer in play-off to win Italian Open

Posted:

MONZA (AFP) - Swedens Rikard Karlberg won his first European Tour event on Sunday as he defeated Germanys Martin Kaymer in a play-off to lift the Italian Open title at Monza. The 28-year-old from Gothenburg drained a 15ft birdie putt at the second play-off hole after a brilliant approach shot from the left rough set up the winning opportunity. Kaymer was also well positioned but left his 20-footer short of the cup and failed in his bid for a first victory since winning the 2014 US Open. Both playes had finished 72 holes on 19-under at the par-72 Golf Club Milano on a clear sunny day in Milan. Seven players tied for third place including Swedes Joakim Lagergren and Jens Fahrbring, English pair Matthew Fitzpatrick and Danny Willett, Paraguayan Fabrizio Zanotti, Lucas Bjerregaard of Denmark and American David Lipsky.Kaymer had earlier carved out a two-stroke lead, thanks to four birdies down the front nine but three bogeys at 10, 13 and 14 opened the door for Karlberg who pulled level thanks to birdies at 16 and 17. The Swede, who has two wins on the Asian Tour, missed the fairway at both play-off holes but scrambled a par at the first and then won the tournament with a cool-headed putt on the second time round at the 18th hole. It would have been the 12th EPGA victory for the 30-year-old Kaymer from Dusseldorf, who won his first major at the 2010 PGA Championship.Frenchman Romain Wattel, who shared the overnight lead, bogeyed the 17th and finished alone in 10th and two shots back, while amateur Lorenzo Scalise was the highest placed Italian after a brilliant final round six-under par 66 left him in a tie for 11th.

Formula One: Vettel wins Singapore Grand Prix

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Sebastian Vettel recovered from a heart-stopping track invasion by an unidentified fan on Sunday as he convincingly won the Singapore Grand Prix and closed the gap on Mercedes.Ferraris Vettel led wire-to-wire for his third win this year, ahead of Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo, with championship leader Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes forced out with mechanical problems. But Germanys Vettel had a major shock on lap 36 when he spotted a man walking on the track, a bizarre incident which brought the race to a temporary halt.Theres a man on the track he yelled over the team radio, as the safety car came out for the second time in the floodlit night race. The disruption was the closest Vettel came to an upset and there were echoes of his quadruple world title romp with Red Bull as he calmly won by 1.4 seconds.Yes, you did it Vettel screamed to his team-mates over the radio as he crossed the line, with fireworks exploding over the grandstand and lighting up the night sky. With his 42nd career victory, Vettel draws within eight points of second-placed Nico Rosberg of Mercedes on the drivers standings, with Hamiltons lead reduced to 41.Hamiltons retirement just after halfway completed a miserable weekend for the Briton, who was in line to match Ayrton Sennas tally of 41 wins in 161 races but left empty-handed.Vettel got away smoothly from pole with the top cars staying in formation behind him, but 17-year-old Max Verstappen had a horror start when he stalled and then rejoined one lap behind.Overtaking was non-existent in the early stages on the narrow street track but second-placed Ricciardo was slowly hauling in the leader when a crash brought out the safety car.Felipe Massa exited the pitlane and went straight into the side of Nico Hulkenberg, sending his Force India briefly airborne and into the barriers, and then out of the race. The top three bunched tightly after the restart followed by Hamilton, until the championship leader suddenly lost accelerating power and eventually retired on lap 32.It hasnt been our weekend as a team, but sometimes it happens, a dejected Hamilton said as he left the team garage. At the front, Vettel dropped the hammer and set a fastest lap of 1min 50.520sec as he extended his lead to four seconds at the halfway stage. But the German got a shock when he spotted a fan walking along the circuit on a few laps later, bringing the safety car out yet again.Jenson Button went into the back of Pastor Maldonados Lotus after the restart, showering shards of shattered bodywork over cars behind and ultimately forcing the McLaren driver out.Young Verstappen fought brilliantly up to eighth from the back of the grid and angrily refused when Toro Rosso ordered him to yield his spot to team-mate Carlos Sainz.Out in front, Vettel was untroubled and he duly completed the win to send out a message to Mercedes that they will have to work to secure their second straight one-two in the title race.

Pakistan will face England in the first of three Tests in Abu Dhabi from October 13 with Pakistani hopes high after their 3-0 rout against the same opponents three years ago. Then, as now, England entered the contest having vanquished their arch-foes Australia, their most recent contest ending in a 3-2 scoreline for the hosts. But former fastman Waqar said his fourth-ranked team had been consistent in the games longer format and stood up well to third-placed England.I think recently we played a Test series in Sri Lanka and from that result I will not hesitate to say that we are a good Test side, Waqar told media during a training camp.Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 2-1, Bangladesh 1-0, Australia 2-0 and finished 1-1 against New Zealand in their last four Test series. Our batting has done well for the last one year or so and even before that we played Australia and New Zealand we did well, but we will not take England lightly and for that we need to play with the same passion, he said.Waqar praised the Ashes winners but singled out leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who took 22 wickets in Sri Lanka, as a key player for the series.Shah made his Test debut in late 2014 but has risen fast and is currently placed number four in the Test bowler rankingsBefore taking on England, Pakistan will tour Zimbabwe where they will play two Twenty20 and three one-day international matches from September 27 to October 5.

Indian cricket chief Jagmohan Dalmiya dies aged 75

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indian cricket supremo Jagmohan Dalmiya, who oversaw the countrys emergence as the games financial powerhouse, died on Sunday only months after his comeback at the helm of the national board. The 75-year-old president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) died in a hospital in his hometown of Kolkata after falling critically ill with a heart condition last week. The greatest sports administrator of India has passed away, an era ends, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said on Twitter. His death triggered an outpouring of tributes, including from the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. My thoughts are with the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya in this hour of grief. May Shri Dalmiyas soul rest in peace, Modi said on Twitter.Worked hard for the game of cricket and excelled as an administrator, Tendulkar wrote on Twitter.Dalmiya, who was also a former head of the International Cricket Council, presided over a dramatic increase in Indias financial muscle during previous stints at the helm of the BCCI after negotiating mega broadcast deals. He returned to the post of BCCI president in March but was subsequently dogged by health problems and had been absent from a number of recent board meetings.Dalmiya was unceremoniously dumped by the BCCI in 2004 over allegations of financial irregularities but made a comeback earlier this year after his predecessor Narayanaswami Srinivasan was forced out by a corruption scandal. He first shot to fame when he, along with bureaucrat Inderjit Singh Bindra, broke Australia and Englands hold on the ICC to win the right to host the 1987 and 1996 World Cups on the sub-continent.He went on to become ICC president from 1997-2000 and BCCI president from 2001 to 2004.Television revenue expanded massively under Dalmiyas tenure and the boards of smaller Test-playing nations -- desperate to attract tours by India so they could sell the television rights -- would usually fall in line behind the BCCI when it came to key decisions within the game. While Dalmiya effectively handpicked his successor Ranbir Singh Mahendra, he was marginalised in 2006 when Sharad Pawar beat Mahendra to become the president after a bitterly-contested election.Later the same year, Pawar got Dalmiya expelled from the BCCI for alleged misappropriation of funds and for his refusal to provide documents pertaining to hosting the 1987 World Cup.Dalmiya challenged the decision and in 2007 both the Bombay High Court and Supreme Court cleared him of any irregularities. He returned as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal in 2007 and was back in the BCCI fold.A wily politician, he surprisingly emerged as a compromise candidate to head the board as Srinivasan tried to cling onto power. But after his election in March, the once ubiquitous administrator was seldom seen in public and left the day-to-day running of the board in Thakurs hands. In comments to the CricInfo website, Thakur hailed Dalmiya as a visionary and a father figure of Indian cricket. His untiring efforts will be remembered for generations to come and his contribution to Indian cricket will remain unparalleled.
