Boxing: Movie-man Mayweather lashes critics

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Floyd Mayweather said Wednesday that he is more likely to end up in movies than keep boxing, as he rounded on his critics ahead of what he insists will be his last fight. The unbeaten pound-for-pound king takes on massive underdog Andre Berto on September 12 in Las Vegas in a welterweight world title showdown that has so far failed to capture the public imagination. The brash American, 38, will make it 49-0 with victory -- equaling the record of heavyweight legend Rocky Marciano -- and has consistently said he will hang up his gloves afterwards. Few believe him.In a conference call with reporters, Mayweather and Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions, said there had been signficant entertainment possibilities for the champion for when he calls it quits -- including three major movie offers in the last week alone.Ive been approached on numerous occasions (to act) but Id rather be behind the scenes. Ive had my time to shine, said Mayweather, reiterating Berto would be his last bout and he is having no second thoughts about giving up the fight game.Boxing fans and pundits have hit out at the self-styled Money and TBE (The Best Ever) Mayweathers choice of Berto (30-3), who has lost three of his last six fights and was cherry-picked ahead of more exciting -- and more dangerous -- men. When you are in my shoes, they are always going to criticize, that comes with the territory, said Mayweather, the highest-earning sportsman in the world.I couldnt care less. Nobody is forced to watch. Watch if you want to watch, dont watch if you dont want to watch. Write about it if you want to write about it, if you dont want to write about it, dont. The experts may have written off Berto, 31, but Mayweather insists he is taking his opponent seriously and says he is training harder for the rank outsider than he did for his so-called fight of the century against Manny Pacquiao earlier this year.Mayweather extended his unbeaten run with a unanimous points decision over the Filipino in a disappointing bout.Underestimating Berto, an aggressive fighter who is likely to be on the front foot against the defensively brilliant Mayweather, would be a dangerous mistake, said the champion. He has nothing to lose and when you have a guy that has nothing to lose, that makes him work that much harder, said Mayweather.Hes got a chance to be the top guy in the sport when Im through... anything can happen (in a fight) so Im prepared and in top shape, as Im sure he is.But Im not going to overlook this guy.

Cycling: Froome's hopes of Vuelta glory all but go up in smoke

ALTO ELS CORTALS DENCAMP (AFP) - Chris Froomes hopes of becoming only the third rider to win the Tour de France and Spains Vuelta in the same year faded on Wednesday after he was cut adrift on the 11th stage.Astana rider Mikel Landa, third in this years Giro dItalia, won the stage at the summit of Cortals dEncamp in Andorra in the Pyrenees, as his team-mate Fabio Aru seized the overall lead.Aru, 25 and second in the Giro, attacked on the final ascent of the daunting 138km ride through Andorra to take the overall leaders red jersey from Dutchman Tom Dumoulin. It represented quite a turnaround in Astanas fortunes after their team leader and 2014 Tour de France champion Vincenzo Nibali was expelled from the race last week for getting a tow from a team car.Aru has struck a huge blow in terms of the overall standings, one hopes he can go all the way, purred Landa.Two-time Tour de France champion Froome, who had started the day in eighth place overall, 1min 18sec adrift of the lead, was dropped in the mountains and his hopes of winning a second Grand Tour this year look to be dead in the water. The 30-year-old Kenyan-born Sky rider started the day badly when he fell, and things got steadily worse as he lost contact with the leading group 40km from the finish and lost about seven minutes by the time he crossed the line.Froome is now 15th overall, 7min 30sec behind Aru.His team-mate and loyal lieutenant Geraint Thomas stayed with him throughout his travails and revealed to broadcaster Eurosport afterwards that all was not well.Froomey obviously had a heavy crash and he said his foot was quite bad, said Thomas. He said his legs were OK but on the special category climb he started to suffer when Astana really lit it up.He got dropped then, and I was about to get dropped myself anyway so I sat up and waited for him.He seemed to come round on the last climb but we just had to keep going.Froomey always keeps fighting and thats what we did.The other two cyclists who filled the podium spots at the Tour de France also struggled, Alejandro Valverde coming in over a minute in arrears of Aru and Nairo Quintana, the runner-up to Froome in France, losing over three minutes. Landa, 25, was part of the initial breakaway group and went clear on his own on the final first-category climb of the Queen stage of the race.Earlier in the stage, Portuguese rider Sergio Paulinho was taken to hospital after being knocked over, according to his team Tinkoff-Saxo, by a motorbike carrying a TV cameraman, just as had happened to his team-mate Peter Sagan in the eighth stage.Paulinho had to have 17 stitches inserted in a leg wound.A furious team owner, Russian oligarch Oleg Tinkov, threatened to pull the team out of the race.Believe you or NOT? But Sergio Paulinho was hit today by TVE motorcycle and end up at hospital w 17 stitches. What a messy and shallow race... the 47-year-old former brewing magnate tweeted. Im considering now to take the team off the Vuelta2015 . Boycott ASO (owner of the company that organises the Vuelta) for this. They pay us NO money for the race and even damage riders.Thursdays 12th stage is a gentler ride for the remaining cyclists, a 173km run from Escaldes/Engordany to Lleida, with a finish suited to the sprinters.

Oil stages modest rebound after mixed US petroleum data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices climbed Wednesday in a modest rebound from a sharp sell-off after a mixed US petroleum report showed an increase in crude inventories and a decline in production.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for October delivery rose 84 cents to $46.25 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for October closed at $50.50 a barrel, a gain of 94 cents from Tuesdays settlement. The oil market turned sharply lower Tuesday, snapping a strong three-day rally, after weak manufacturing data from China and the United States further clouded the outlook for demand growth in the two biggest energy consumers.Rising supplies and lackluster demand growth have spurred oils steep decline since mid-2014, when crude fetched more than $100 a barrel.Traders pored Wednesday over the latest US weekly oil report from the Department of Energy (DoE). Commercial crude inventories rose by 4.7 million barrels to 455.4 million barrels in the week ending August 28, staying near eight-decade highs. The increase was much bigger than the 900,000 barrels on average expected by experts Bloomberg News surveyed. The unexpectedly sharp build reminds traders about the excessive supply of the stuff in the US, which should continue to weigh on prices for the foreseeable future, said Fawad Razaqzada, an analyst at Forex.com.US crude production, meanwhile, fell by 119,000 barrels to 9.22 million barrels a day. Gasoline inventories fell by 300,000 barrels to 214.2 million barrels.Oil inventories are unlikely to be reduced meaningfully in the short term because not only is the summer driving season coming to an end but there is also the usual refinery maintenance works that will take place soon, meaning weaker demand -- particularly for gasoline, Razaqzada said.Commerzbank analysts highlighted the markets extreme volatility. The volatility index for crude oil has all but doubled in the past two weeks and reached its highest level since mid-March yesterday, they said in a research note.It is therefore virtually impossible to make any reliable predictions about near-term price performance at the moment -- indeed such predictions hardly have even a half-life of a few hours right now.

Dollar rises as markets ride volatility

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar rose against other major currencies Wednesday as global equity markets faced renewed volatility driven by concerns about Chinas slowdown.Currencies are naturally sensitive to the volatility in equity markets (and in commodities for that matter), said Kit Juckes, global foreign exchange strategist at Societe Generale, in a client note. And equity markets, after enjoying a long rally inspired by the Federal Reserves ultra-loose monetary policy, are on edge waiting for the Feds first rate hike in more than nine years, he said. The policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee is expected to weigh raising near-zero interest rates at its September 16-17 meeting, but the outlook for liftoff remains clouded.Maybe, once the first rate hike is finally behind us (if that day ever dawns) we will see calmer markets, said Juckes. But for now, and until the FOMC decision is announced on September 17, he said, foreign exchange and rates markets will be the tail that is wagged by the equity and commodities dogs. Bubbles are being deflated.James Stanley, currency analyst at DailyFX, said upcoming holidays and key data and policy events in various markets could skew trade in the coming days.Chinese markets will be closed on Thursday and Friday, the European Central Bank holds a policy meeting Thursday and the US August jobs report comes on Friday.Chinese stocks could be in for a big day upon opening on Monday to price in all of this new data. And with US markets closed on Monday in observance of Labor Day -- the potential for extreme volatility could present itself, he said.
