Tennis: Radwanska wins Pan Pacific Open

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Agnieszka Radwanska fended off a challenge from teenage giant-killer Belinda Bencic Sunday to win the WTA Pan Pacific Open, a victory that will propel the Pole back into the worlds top 10.The seventh-seed grabbed her first tournament victory of this year, and her 15th career title, with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 victory against the eighth-seed Swiss.Radwanska, who will move up five places to eighth when the new rankings are released on Monday, said she hoped to use the rest of the season to secure her place among the elite top eight who will compete in the season-ending WTA finals in Singapore.I am so so happy that I could play my best tennis today, said Radwanska, who won in Tokyo in 2011 and was runner-up in 2012.Belinda really pushed me to play 200 percent today, she said.Radwanska repeatedly nailed accurate serves to deep corners, mixing them with drop shots, lobs and passing shots to send Bencic running all over the court. The 18-year-old rising star Bencic said the exertion of beating former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the semi-final had taken its toll on her legs. She was better in every aspect of the game today, Bencic said. I tried to fight, but I was really tired.I still have a lot to learn to play like her. She is just so smart on the court. It was difficult to play against her, Bencic said. The young Swiss, who will also rise from her current ranking of 15, had also beaten former US Open champion Sam Stosur and current number eight Garbine Muguruza on her run to the final. For me this tournament was a very good step forward, Bencic said. I think it showed I really belonged to play against top players.Bencic now heads to the Wuhan Open in China where 18 of the worlds top 20 will compete beginning Monday, and still harbours ambition to break into the top eight and reach the tour finals.I think everyones goal is to go to Singapore, she said. For sure, I am trying to get in there. I think I started pretty well taking a lot of points here in Tokyo.

Football: Bayern extend lead as Darmstadt hold Dortmund

BERLIN (AFP) - Borussia Dortmund lost more ground in the Bundesliga title race on Sunday after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Darmstadt which left Bayern Munich four points clear.Having also drawn 1-1 at Hoffenheim on Wednesday, Dortmund fell further behind champions Bayern ahead of next Sundays top-of-the-table clash against the Bavarians at Munichs Allianz Arena.Bayern are the only team in Germanys top flight to have won all seven league games so far.Pep Guardiolas leaders are looking to become the first team to win four consecutive Bundesliga titles. After Marcel Heller gave Darmstadt a shock lead, Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang looked to have sealed the hosts comeback win with two second-half goals to maintain his record run having scored in each of Dortmunds first seven Bundesliga games. With nine goals, Aubameyang is just one behind Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski. But Darmstadt captain Aytac Sulu rescued a point by stabbing home from a free-kick just before the final whistle as the Dortmund defence failed to react in time. Our problems came from the final free-kick, there were four or five players just standing around and that was no way to defend against a simple set-piece like that, fumed Dortmund captain Mats Hummels.Earlier, midfielder Vladimir Darida rescued a point for Hertha Berlin with the late equaliser in their 1-1 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt after captain Alexander Meier gave the hosts the lead midway through the first half. The point leaves Hertha sixth and Frankfurt 10th in the table. On Saturday, Bayern took the chance to extend their lead with a 3-0 win at Mainz as Lewandowskis goal haul continued.Having sent German league records tumbling last Tuesday with five goals in just nine minutes after coming off the bench in the 5-1 rout of Wolfsburg, the 27-year-old claimed two more against Mainz.Lewandowski scored his 100th Bundesliga goal by heading Kingsley Comans cross inside the far post on 51 minutes and pulled up his jersey to reveal a T-Shirt which stated: 100.The T-Shirt was my idea, I didnt know if Id score today, but you always have to think positively, which is why I had it made, he told reporters. An Arturo Vidal pass then put Lewandowski in behind the defence to round the goalkeeper for his 101st on 63 minutes.France Under-21 winger Coman grabbed Bayerns third five minutes later with a simple tap in from a Douglas Costa cross.Bayerns next date is hosting Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday.Schalke remain third after Germany Under-21 attacking midfielder Leroy Sane scored for the third game in succession to seal Saturdays 1-0 win at Hamburg with a superb strike on the hour.Bayer Leverkusen, who play European champions Barcelona away on Tuesday, romped to a 3-0 win at Werder Bremen with goals by Swiss forward Admir Mehmedi, winger Kevin Kampl and Germany Under-21 talent Julian Brandt.Wolfsburg, who play Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday in the Champions League, dropped more points in a 1-1 draw at home to bottom side Hanover to stay fourth.Bas Dosts header was cancelled out by Japan midfielder Hiroshi Kiyotakes superb volley on 57 minutes.Borussia Moenchengladbach, who host Manchester City on Wednesday, picked up their second win since Lucien Favres shock resignation last Sunday with a 3-1 victory at VfB Stuttgart. The goals came from Granit Xhaka, a Christian Gentner own-goal and Raffels late effort afer Daniel Ginczek slotted a 40th-minute penalty for Stuttgart.Hoffenheim climbed to 15th with a 3-1 win at Augsburg as Germany international Kevin Volland scored twice, including a second-half penalty.

Football: Kalinic hat-trick stuns scudetto hopefuls Inter

Posted:

MILAN (AFP) - A hat-trick by Croatia striker Nikola Kalinic set up Fiorentina for a stunning 4-1 win at the San Siro that ended Inter Milans 100% start to the campaign and sent La Viola top of Serie A on Sunday. Inter, who have not won the scudetto since their treble-winning feat of 2010, had boosted their early-season hopes by racing to a 10-point lead over defending champions Juventus after winning their opening five games.Juventus were at risk of being left 13 points in arrears but a stunning first-half performance from Paulo Sousas visitors, who had raced to a 3-0 lead by the interval, served a stern reminder that the Serie A season is far from over.Inter had conceded only one goal in their opening five games but by the 23rd minute goalkeeper Samir Handanovic had picked the ball out of his net three times.Fiorentina were gifted the perfect start when the referee pointed to the penalty spot after Handanovic impeded Kalinic in the area.Josip Ilicic stepped up to slam the ball into the roof of the net after just four minutes. If the early opener shellshocked the Nerazzurri, they were ill-prepared for what was about to follow.Barely 15 minutes later Handanovic was beaten again, although this time the Slovenian keeper could justifiably apportion some of the blame to Inters sloppy defence.Handanovic could only parry a powerful dipping drive from Ilicic and as he and Brazilian defender Miranda waited for the ball to land, Kalinic wasted no time in running in to tap the ball home at the near post.Four minutes later Kalinic had doubled his tally for the night, the Croatian sliding in from close range to meet Marcos Alonsos sweeping drive from the left flank.By now, Inter were all at sea and their night went from bad to worse on the half hour when Miranda was shown a straight red card for tugging on Kalinic as the striker ran down towards goal.Coach Roberto Mancini replaced the ineffective Geoffrey Kondogbia at half-time, the French midfielder making way for defender Andrea Ranocchia. But although Inter reduced the arrears on the hour mark, Mauro Icardi picking up his own rebound from an Alex Telles free kick to beat Ciprian Tatarusanu, it was a rare bright spot in an otherwise forgettable performance.Fiorentina looked dangerous on almost every opportunity and Kalinic secured his hat-trick on 76 minutes when he beat Handanovic down low after a superb one-two with Ilicic. Thanks to La Violas superior goals difference, they went top ahead of Inter, who also have 15 points, with Torino two points off the pace in third.Lazio sit fifth, one point ahead of Roma, with champions Juventus in 15th place following a 2-1 defeat to Napoli on Saturday as they reel from their worst start to the season in decades.

Football: Brilliant Ben Arfa inspires Nice victory

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Hatem Ben Arfa produced two moments of magic as nine-man Nice romped to a 4-1 victory away at Saint-Etienne on Sunday, preventing their opponents from closing the gap on Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain.Vincent Koziello had given Nice an early lead at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, but Loic Perrin soon equalised for Saint-Etienne, converting the rebound after a Fabien Lemoine shot crashed back off the bar. That was when Ben Arfa intervened, volleying past Stephane Ruffier and into the far corner of the net to put the visitors back in front in the 39th minute.Even better was to come a minute prior to the interval as Ben Arfa, who started out at Saint-Etiennes bitter rivals Lyon, dribbled into the box past several challenges and dispatched a low shot across Ruffier. The goals were confirmation that France international Ben Arfa is flourishing again in his homeland after a disappointing spell in England with Newcastle United and then Hull City followed by six months out of the game earlier this year.Jean-Michael Seri put Nice further ahead following a counter-attack led by Valere Germain, before Nampalys Mendy and Maxime Le Marchand were both sent off in the final half-hour.The latter walked after conceding a penalty that was missed by Jean-Christophe Bahebeck as Nice claimed a third win in just over a week following a 3-1 victory at Bastia and a 6-1 thumping of Bordeaux.Nice are up to seventh while Saint-Etienne remain second, four points behind leaders and defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, who won 4-1 at Nantes on Saturday.Elsewhere on Sunday, Marseilles poor start to the season continued with a 2-1 defeat at home to promoted Angers.Goals from Thomas Mangani, a penalty, and Romain Thomas had Marseille in deep trouble at the Stade Velodrome before Michy Batshuayi reduced the deficit 11 minutes from time, again from the spot. The result left Michels struggling side down in the bottom half of the table, just four points above the relegation zone. We played very badly in the first half, thats not the way to start a match, moaned Michel. We werent in the match and were below par for many minutes. We lacked creativity and penetration. I cant explain it but well have to find a solution.Angers continued their impressive return to the top flight after an absence of 21 years as they moved into fifth, level on points with third-placed Rennes.Fifteen points after eight matches is crazy, said Angers coach Stephane Moulin. Were not crazy, we know Marseille are better than us, individually and collectively, but in football little teams can make life difficult for the big ones.It was a disastrous outcome for Marseille to a peculiar match in which the Velodrome was empty at both ends due to a punishment related to last weekends incidents during the 1-1 draw with Lyon, in which several Marseille fans threw missiles at police and onto the pitch.Later on, a lucky goal from Nicolas Benezet a minute from time denied Monaco victory as Guingamp snatched a 3-3 draw in Brittany.Having won 3-2 at Montpellier on Thursday, Monaco looked on course for a second successive away victory but despite taking the lead three times in the match, through Bernardo Silva, Andrea Raggi and Nabil Dirar, the hosts pegged them back each time thanks to Sloan Privat and a Benezet brace, the last of which appeared to be a cross that sliced into the net at the near post.Montpellier, the 2012 champions, got their first win of the season in a 2-1 victory over mid-table Lorient.Jonas Martin hit the winner in the 57th minute after Lorients Raffidine Abdullah -- who was later sent off -- had cancelled out Ramy Bensebainis opener, although Montpellier remain in the bottom three.

Golf: $10 million man Spieth on top of the world

Posted:

ATLANTA (AFP) - Jordan Spieth capped an epic season with a Tour Championship victory that boosted him back to number one in the world and took his 2015 winnings to more than $22 million. The 22-year-old Texan, whose five wins this season included the Masters and US Open, fired a final round 69 for 271 and a four-shot win over Swedens Henrik Stenson, New Zealands Danny Lee and Englands Justin Rose. With the win -- and Jason Days 10th-place finish -- Spieth will recapture the number one ranking Australias Day had held for a week.He also set a US PGA Tour record for earnings, the Tour Championship first prize of $1.485 million taking his total for the year to $12,030,465 -- not including the $10 million bonus that came with his FedEx Cup playoff title. This year is unreal, said Spieth, who in addition to his two major victories finished tied for fourth at the British Open and runner-up to Day at the PGA Championship.I dont know how we sit down and figure out how to improve on it, but were going to try and do that.Spieth also won the US Tours Valspar Championship and John Deere Classic -- but admitted he was stung by back-to-back missed cuts in the first two events of the US Tours elite four tournament playoff series.Day had come on strong at the end of the season, but with this win Spieth dampened any debate about who would deserve Player of the Year honors.Spieth started the day with a one-stroke lead over Stenson, and the Swede -- who could also have seized the playoff bonus with a victory -- tried to keep the pressure on.Back to back bogeys from Spieth at the fifth and sixth saw Stenson pull level, but Spieth was just too good on the greens. He poured in a 21-foot birdie putt at the eighth as Stenson bogeyed to restore his two-shot cushion. He drained an 18-footer at the ninth -- to maintain his advantage despite Stensons birdie, and bounced back from a bogey at 10 with a 47-foot birdie putt at the 11th.The rest of the way Spieth found the clutch par putts when he needed them. That included a nine-footer at the 15th and a putt of about the same distance at 16.Stenson, meanwhile, found his race for the title turning into a battle to hang on to at least a share of second, which he relinquished with a double-bogey at 17.But Stenson rolled in a long birdie putt at the par-three 18th to cap a two-over 72 that was good enough to join Lee and Rose on five-under, Lee climbing up the leaderboard with a five-under 65 and Rose signing for a 66.

Golf: Thongchai wins seventh European Tour title

BAD GRIESBACH (AFP) - Thailand veteran Thongchai Jaidee captured his seventh European Tour title on Sunday with a one-shot victory at the European Open. The 45-year-old former paratrooper carded a final round, bogey-free 67 for a tournament total 17-under par 267.Englands Graeme Storm also enjoyed a final day 67 for a four-round total 268.Storms challenge unravelled when he found water from the 17th tee and, although he managed to save par at the last, Thongchai claimed victory at the 18th, becoming the oldest champion in the events history. Its a very special week for me, said the Thai star.It is the third time I have won outside of Asia, so Im very excited about that and Im happy to win this tournament. Im feeling very confident at the moment. I didnt make many mistakes this week -- only one bogey all week. I played very nicely and 17 under is some score for me. I liked the golf course. Its not very long and you have to keep it in play.Despite missing out on a first European Tour since 2007, Storm was happy with his efforts. To finish second like last year is disappointing but Ive secured my Tour card and Ive got a job again for next year, Storm told www.europeantour.com.That was the main thing at the start of the week and today as well. Maybe I could have holed a few more putts and the title would be mine, but congratulations to Thongchai, he made a great up and down on the last.

Motorcycling: Lorenzo wins Aragon Grand Prix

Posted:

ALCAIZ (AFP) - Spains Jorge Lorenzo won his third race on home soil this season at the Aragon Grand Prix to cut the gap on Yahama teammate Valentino Rossi in the fight for the world championship to just 14 points.Rossi finished third as he failed to get passed Hondas Dani Pedrosa despite a series of attempts. However, defending world champion Marc Marquezs hopes of a third consecutive title are all but over as he crashed out on the second lap.For Marquez to clinch the title he would have to win each of the last four races, and Rossi and Lorenzo to hit a run of poor form.Marquez started on pole at his self-confessed favourite race afer setting a blistering new track record in qualifying. However, he had already been overtaken by Lorenzo by the time he pushed too hard on the second lap and was unable to get his bike going again after running into the gravel. As always I made a good start, so my strategy was to ride at the maximum, said Lorenzo.I think it worked well because Marquez was at the limit to try and follow me. On the second lap I think he recovered some of the gap, but I didnt expect him to crash. When I saw that he had crashed I could breathe more deeply. Anyway I had Dani at between 2.7 and three seconds, but I couldnt open a bigger gap. I really needed to push all the race to keep this distance.Lorenzo was then allowed to ride easily to his sixth win of the season with the real action taking place behind him as Pedrosa bravely held off Rossi. The Italian passed Pedrosa on five occasions, but each time the Spaniard was able to respond immediately to prevent Rossi picking up an vital extra four points in the title race.It was really hard to focus on keeping the lap time but also closing the door because Vale was faster on many corners, said Pedrosa.I tried to fight, I tried to stay in front because I knew that was the key finish second. In the end, it was a good battle because I dont know how many times we overtook each other but it was nice to race to the end and finish second today.Nine-time world champion Rossi hasnt won a world title since 2009 and he was left to lament what could be an important four points lost come the final Grand Prix of the season in Valencia in November.I tried everything, but unfortunately Dani was able to overtake me in the next corner. After I would try another time but he was always able to come back, said Rossi.I knew it was difficult to beat Dani because he had very good pace, but I tried and I am not very happy because I needed that four points more for the second place. Today was not possible, but anyway it was a good result.

Cycling: Slovakia's Sagan captures world road race crown

RICHMOND (AFP) - Slovakias Peter Sagan charged ahead over the final climbs and hung on at the finish to win Sundays mens road race at the World Road Cycling Championships. The 25-year-old completed the 261.4km (162.4 mile) course in 6hrs 14mins 37secs to defeat Australian Michael Matthews by three seconds with Lithuanias Ramunas Navardauskas third, also in 6:14:37.I think its the biggest victory, Sagan said. Im very happy. Its unbelievable for me. Im very happy for this.Sagan, who won this years Tour of California, and the points competition at the Tour de France, was considered a favorite because his skill on short, steep climbs with sprint speed fit perfectly with the Richmond city street course. There was big motivation for me to win, Sagan said.On a cool day when predicted rain barely fell, Sagan was barely mentioned among those at the front until it mattered most.I did just one attack, Sagan said. But I think it was the right attack.Polands Michal Kwiatkowski, the 2014 winner, was among seven riders who surged ahead with 32km remaining, joined by Belgian Tom Boonen, Italys Elia Viviani, Dutchman Bauke Mollema, Britains Ian Stannard, Spains Daniel Moreno and Costa Ricas Andrey Amador in the breakaway.Germany, Australia and US riders tried to pull the peloton forward, but teammates of the leaders slowed the pack and rivals struggled to respond. With 16km remaining, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin and Portugals Nelson Oliveira led surges but both were swallowed by the peloton.American Tyler Farrar and Kanstantsin Siutsou of Belarus tried again with 10km remaining but an Italian-led peloton chased them down just before the narrow, winding Libby Hill cobblestone climb, where a French attack failed.Sagan and Belgian Greg Van Avermaet charged up the final cobblestone climb at 23rd Street and from there Sagan surged to the front and kept the lead to the finish line.It was very strange, he said. I was waiting, waiting. I was a little bit also in the crazy. Everybody had to be tired.I gave all the enegry I had. I was hoping for the last cobblestone line and from there it was just gas it to the finish.Sagan tossed his helmet into the crowd in the euphoric moments after his victory.Matthews charged but came up just short in trying to become the first Aussie to win the road race since Cadel Evans in 2009.Aussie teammate Simon Gerrans, second last year, finished sixth.Kwiatkowski, who before the race announced a jump from Etixx Quick Step to Team Sky for next season, finished eighth. Not since Italys Paolo Bettini in 2007 has a rider repeated as world road race winner.Norways Alexander Kristoff, who has 20 wins this year and took a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics road race, placed fourth.
