HP to cut up to 30,000 more jobs in enterprise business

Posted:

REUTERS -Hewlett-Packard Co, which is splitting into two listed companies later this year, said on Tuesday it expects to cut another 25,000 to 30,000 jobs in its enterprise business as the tech pioneer adjusts to falling demand. The latest cuts, on top of layoffs of 55,000 workers previously announced under Chief Executive Officer Meg Whitman, notably will be in the companys faster-growing corporate hardware and services operations, to be spun off as Hewlett Packard Enterprise, or HPE, on Nov. 1.The latest job cuts indicate a reduction of the companys total workforce by at least 10 percent, based on the companys most recent number of more than 300,000 employees as of Oct. 31, 2014, and reflecting the previously announced reduction of 55,000.The company indicated the cuts will be global, but provided no specifics.Under the split into two companies, the other company, HP Inc, will comprise the computer and printer businesses, which have been hit hard by a relentless decline in sales of personal computers.Weve done a significant amount of work over the past few years to take costs out and simplify processes and these final actions will eliminate the need for any future corporate restructuring, Whitman said in a statement. The job cuts, aimed at saving $2.7 billion a year, will result in a charge of about $2.7 billion, beginning in the fourth quarter, HP said.Job cuts have become a way of life at the company in recent years as it has digested a series of acquisitions that failed to revive its fortunes. The number is sadly larger than some people might have expected, but I think its a reflection of how much trouble HP has been having with its services, said Charles King, president and principal analyst of Pund-IT, a Silicon Valley IT consulting firm.Hewlett-Packards chief financial officer, Cathie Lesjak, said last month that HP expected the previously announced job cuts of 55,000 under Whitman to increase by up to 5 percent by the end of October.Im frankly not sure if HP is finished with the layoffs, King said, saying he expects the job cuts and the shuffling of people and positions to continue well into 2016.HP said it is moving more of its workers to lower-cost locations as part of its efforts to cut costs. In its 2013 fiscal year, the company said 36 percent of the employees in the unit of HPE called enterprise services worked in what it called low-cost locations. This year 42 percent do, and executives said they plan to increase that percentage to 60 percent by 2018.In its fiscal third quarter ended July 31, HPs revenue from personal computer and printer businesses, its largest, fell 11.5 percent.Of the units to be housed in HPE, which will be run by Whitman, sales in enterprise services dropped 11 percent, while revenue at the enterprise group rose 2 percent.HPE will have revenue of more than $50 billion, and is expected to report adjusted profit of $1.85 to $1.95 per share in 2016, HP said on Tuesday. The business is expected to report free cash flow of $2.0 billion to $2.2 billion in 2016, at least half of which is expected to be returned through dividends and share buybacks.HP shares fell 1.4 percent to $26.73 in extended trading on Tuesday after the news.Maxim Group analyst Nehal Chokshi blamed the market reaction on the cash flow target, which he said looked short of the contribution needed from the enterprise unit to meet analysts forecasts.Late Tuesday, the company also released financial projections for HP Inc, the PC and printer businesses. Saying it expects the market for those products to remain tough for the next several quarters, it forecast 2016 earnings for HP Inc to be between $1.67 to $1.77 per share, excluding items. The business is expected to report free cash flow of $3 billion to $3.3 billion in 2016, at least half of which is expected to be returned through dividends and share buybacks.

Asian shares up, U.S. bond yields jump before Fed

TOKYO (Reuters) -Asian shares followed Wall Street higher on Wednesday, while short-term U.S. bond yields held near 4 1/2-year highs as investors braced for the possibility of the first interest rate hike in the United States in almost a decade.Japans Nikkei jumped 1.1 percent while MSCIs broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan US gained 0.4 percent.U.S. shares rallied over one percent overnight, in part helped by data showing healthy growth in consumer spending though price action is likely to have been exaggerated by low trading volume ahead of the Feds policy verdict on Thursday.U.S. Treasuries yields jumped on Tuesday, with the policy-sensitive two-year yield US2YT=RR rising about 8 basis points to peak at 0.815 percent, its highest level since April 2011.It last traded at 0.802 percent in early Asian trade. The 10-year U.S. notes yield stood at 2.272 percent US10YT=RR, having risen to a 1 1/2-month high of 2.293 percent on Tuesday. Those moves do not seem to be caused by any leaks on the Feds meeting. They are probably triggered by nervousness among those who are taking position (ahead of the Feds policy announcement), Chotaro Morita, chief fixed income strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities, said in report.Indeed, money market futures contracts for September FF:> have hardly budged, still pricing in about a 30 percent chance of a rate increase this week.U.S. economic data published on Tuesday did little to either back, or douse, expectations of an imminent rate increase.U.S. retail sales for August was slightly below market expectations but, combined with upward revision for July, the figures painted a fairly healthy pace of consumer spending growth over the past two months. On the other hand, manufacturing remained soft, smarting from the headwinds of a strong dollar, slack economies oversees and lower oil prices. In the currency market, the dollar index extended its rebound from Mondays three-week low of 95.125 to stand at 95.587. But it is essentially staying in its well-worn range in the last few weeks. .DXY =USDThe euro traded at $1.1273 EUR= while the dollar fetched 120.46 yen JPY=.In contrast, emerging market currencies remained under pressure on worries about higher U.S. borrowing costs and slower growth in China, trading near multi-year lows against the dollar.Oil prices held firm for now after 3 percent gains made on Tuesday driven by rallying stocks, higher gasoline prices and on a report showing strong stockpile draw.In early Asian trade, U.S. crude futures rose 0.8 percent to $44.95 per barrel CLc1 while Brent futures rose 0.3 percent to $47.91

Obama honors Connecticut women's basketball champs - again

WASHINGTON (Reuters)President Barack Obama welcomed the University of Connecticut womens basketball team to the White House on Tuesday, saying the Huskies - NCAA tournament champions three years in a row - have visited so often they are now qualified to give tours of the executive mansion. The Huskies capped a 38-1 season by defeating Notre Dame for the National Collegiate Athletic Association tournament title in April, the schools 10th national championship and fifth in the past seven years under head coach Geno Auriemma. This is this teams third visit in a row, Obama said in the East Room ceremony honoring the Huskies. They are now certified to provide White House tours. I was telling folks, This is becoming like the annual Christmas tree lighting.Obama, an avid basketball fan, correctly picked the Huskies, led by national player of the year Breanna Stewart, to win the title in his annual tournament bracket predictions.I dont want to jinx it. No team has ever won four in a row. Im just saying, Obama said. You get here one more time, we might have to name the White House basketball court after you. Or at least you can guide the tour.Auriemma also had his mind on winning another title. This is our fifth time with President Obama and its just as meaningful and just as moving for us as the very first time, Auriemma said. Hes going to be here one more year. And theres no better way for him to go out next year than to host us again. So well see you next year.Over the past four years, every player who has completed her four years of eligibility at Connecticut has graduated and thats something worth celebrating, Obama said.I’ve got two daughters who are tall and gorgeous and athletic. For them to know that they’ve got a whole bunch of people ahead of them who are doing great stuff, it empowers them and it makes me feel very proud to be with these outstanding young women, he said. Two years ago, Huskies players playfully gave Obama bunny ears - putting up two fingers behind his head - during the White House ceremony. And as I said before, Obama said on Tuesday, no bunny ears this time.

Greater belief has underpinned Day's greatest season

LAKE FOREST (Reuters) -The last piece of the puzzle finally clicked into place for Jason Day at the U.S. Open and, armed with greater self-belief in his own talent, he has since delivered the most successful season of his career.During that three-month span, the Australian claimed his first major title at the PGA Championship and also won the Canadian Open and The Barclays, the first of the PGA Tours four lucrative FedExCup playoff events. And Day is not done yet as he targets further success at this weeks BMW Championship and the season-ending Tour Championship that follows in Atlanta. This is a big two weeks for us, world number three Day told reporters on Tuesday while preparing for Thursdays opening round at Conway Farms Golf Club. Its kind of crunch time.Obviously to get off to a good start here would be great. Im pretty sure Im going to stay top five (in the FedExCup standings), so being able to stay at No. 1 would be good going into Atlanta for the Tour Championship, for the FedExCup.The only way I can do that is just go out and win. Ive got another opportunity at maybe getting to No. 1 (in the world rankings). If I can pull that off, that would be fantastic.Day, who cruised to victory by a whopping six shots at The Barclays late last month, heads the FedExCup standings and would clinch playoff honors and the mind-boggling bonus of $10 million should he win the Sep. 24-27 Tour Championship.Winning takes care of everything, smiled the 27-year-old Australian, who has triumphed a career-high four times on the U.S. circuit this season. I just have to suck it up for the next two weeks, just go out and play as hard as I can.Long regarded as a future world number one, Day finally won his first major with a three-stroke victory over Jordan Spieth in last months PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, a breakthrough he felt owed much to his enhanced self-belief.I always thought that I had the skills to play and win at the highest level and be competitive, but the last piece of the puzzle was to really believe, said Day.Something finally clicked ever since the U.S. Open championship (in June) ... thats the mentality I have to get to all the time ... then Ill be a lot more consistent, not only in my finishes but more consistent in my wins as well. Its easy to say that you have a great swing and youre one of the best players out here, but if you truly dont believe in it, youre never going to be.

FIFA received no profit sharing from 2005 contract: letter

Posted:

ZURICH (Reuters) -Soccer world governing body FIFA was due half of the advertising revenue from a 2005 media deal it signed with a Caribbean soccer organization but did not receive any of it, according to a termination letter sent by FIFA.The contract was signed between FIFA and the Caribbean Football Union and involved media rights in parts of the Caribbean for the 2010 and 2014 World Cup competitions. In the July 2011 letter, reviewed by Reuters, two FIFA officials wrote to the Caribbean Football Union to say they had expected FIFA to receive 50 percent of all revenue from the sale of broadcast sponsorship and TV commercials. To date, FIFA has not received any payments, wrote FIFAs Secretary General Jerome Valcke and its Marketing Director Thierry Weil.Media contracts can be extremely lucrative for FIFA and other sports organizations because of the enormous number of people who watch events such as the World Cup and the advertisements that go with them.It could not be determined how much money was at stake in this instance. Reuters was unable to obtain a copy of the contract.A FIFA spokeswoman declined to comment, citing ongoing investigations, but said FIFA was continuing to cooperate with those investigations.Swiss authorities have said they plan to investigate the 2005 deal, after a television news report that FIFA sold the media rights to the Caribbean organization for far below market value. The Swiss are already investigating how FIFA awarded the 2018 and 2022 World Cup hosting rights.Caribbean Football Union General Secretary Neil Cochrane said in a statement that the groups current executive committee has no knowledge of contracts signed by its previous leader, Jack Warner, and that those contracts had not been ratified by the groups governing congress.Warner declined to comment on Tuesday.U.S. authorities threw FIFA into turmoil in May when they disclosed an indictment against nine soccer officials and five sports marketing executives on charges including racketeering, money laundering and wire fraud. U.S. authorities said the men orchestrated multi-million dollar bribery schemes over 24 years. On Saturday, FIFA defended its handling of the 2005 contract after Swiss broadcaster SRF reported that Warner transferred the media rights to a company he controlled and then resold them in a deal worth between $15 million and $20 million. In a statement, FIFA, citing the revenue-sharing provision, said it had been promised more than an up-front fee and accused the Caribbean group of failing to meet its financial obligations.According to FIFAs termination letter, the Caribbean soccer group was delinquent on other payments to FIFA as early as December 2009 and was in breach of the contract as early as 2007 with regard to a sublicense. It was not clear whether FIFA considered terminating the contract before July 2011.Warner was indicted in May in the United States on charges that he solicited bribes for other soccer-related contracts he controlled. He has said he did nothing wrong and has vowed to fight extradition from Trinidad to New York.SRF also reported that FIFA President Sepp Blatter signed the 2005 contract himself. Blatter has not been charged by U.S. or Swiss authorities with any wrongdoing.Warner has said previously that he received World Cup media rights since 1998 for nominal fees in exchange for helping Blatter win his position. FIFA has said that is not true.

Refreshed Spieth ready to rebound from 'two bad weeks'

Posted:

LAKE FOREST (Reuters) -Jordan Spieth goes into this weeks BMW Championship after missing consecutive cuts for the first time in his remarkable career but, far from being concerned, he puts that down to simply two bad weeks. The Masters and U.S. Open champion has made the most of extra time off following his early exit from the Deutsche Bank Championship 10 days ago and pronounced himself rejuvenated with his game in a solid state for Thursdays opening round.Everything feels normal, everything is on point, world number two Spieth told reporters at Conway Farms Golf Club on Tuesday while preparing for the third of the PGA Tours four lucrative playoff events. My game is in a solid state right now. Its in a state where I can certainly shoot into double digits under par, and I believe that.I just had two bad weeks, he said of his missed cuts at The Barclays and Deutsche Bank Championship. Just leave it at that. Youre just not going to make every single cut. Youre going to have two bad days in a row every now and then.Regarded as one of the games best putters, Spieth struggled on the greens in the first two playoff events but believes he is now back to his best after mixing up his time off with much needed rest and a lot of practice.I feel very confident about where Im at right this second, said the 22-year-old American. I rested a lot. I got a lot of work in this past week, took some time off.Its just a matter of getting it rolling, get into a groove and starting to see some putts go in and get an under-par round started so that I can settle in a little easier.Spieth will play the first two rounds at Conway Farms in the company of FedExCup points leader Jason Day of Australia and third-placed American Rickie Fowler.Regardless of Spieths form this week, he will not suffer the ignominy of a third consecutive missed cut as every player in the elite field of 70 will play all four rounds.Theres no cut, grinned Spieth, who sits second in the FedExCup standings. Im happy to be checking into my hotel, and when they ask what day Im checking out, I can say, Im checking out on Sunday. Its nice.

North Korea says main nuclear complex operational; warns U.S.

Posted:

SEOUL (Reuters) -North Korea said on Tuesday its main nuclear complex was operating and it was working to improve the quality and quantity of weapons which it could use against the United States at any time. The comments on North Koreas official news agency came after its space agency said late Monday it was readying a new satellite for launch, indicating it may fire an upgraded long-range ballistic missile timed around the 70th anniversary of its ruling party on Oct. 10.Any such launch would violate international sanctions although the North insists it would be part of a space program for peaceful purposes. The United States, which has 28,000 military personnel in South Korea, called on North Korea to refrain from irresponsible provocations that aggravate regional tensions. It should focus instead on fulfilling its international obligations and commitments, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told a regular news briefing, referring to past North Korean pledges to denuclearize.Asked if another launch could trigger more sanctions, the top U.S. diplomat for East Asia, Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Russel, told reporters it would be a mistake for North Korea to...embark on the kind of threatening behavior and provocation that led to international sanctions in the first place.Russel said North Korea should unclench its fist and the only path open to it was through international negotiations to ensure denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.China, the Norths main ally, said on Tuesday it opposed nuclear weapons development on the Korean peninsula. We hope the relevant parties, under the current circumstances, can do more that is beneficial to safeguarding the peace and stability of the region and the peninsula, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.North Korea vowed in 2013 to restart all nuclear facilities, including the main nuclear reactor in Yongbyon that had been shuttered.Tuesdays announcement marked its first acknowledgement since then that the plant, which has been the source of fissile material used in the countrys atomic weapons program, is operational. All the nuclear facilities in Yongbyon including the uranium enrichment plant and 5 MW graphite-moderated reactor were rearranged, changed or readjusted and they started normal operation, the Norths state-run KCNA news agency said, citing the director of its atomic agency.NORTH KOREAN WARNINGIf the U.S. and other hostile forces persistently seek their reckless hostile policy towards the DPRK and behave mischievously, the DPRK is fully ready to cope with them with nuclear weapons any time, the director was quoted as saying.DPRK is an acronym for the Norths official name, the Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea. The country often makes threats against the United States and South Korea.Innovations have been made to improve nuclear weapons in quality and quantity as required by the prevailing situation, the director was quoted as saying. The nuclear program of isolated and impoverished North Korea is a key source of international leverage and a means of protecting the third-generation dictatorship of the Kim family. The country is believed to be working towards developing an intercontinental ballistic missile mounted with an atomic warhead that could hit targets in the mainland United States.Experts at 38 North, a website run by the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, said satellite images from Sept. 6 of North Koreas main Sohae launch site showed no sign of preparations for an October launch. There remains little but possibly sufficient time for the North to prepare for a launch if Pyongyang follows past practices and procedures, they said in a report. If a launch is in the works and past practice is any guide, we would soon expect to see increased activity throughout the Sohae launch site.A 38 North report last week said recent satellite imagery of the Yongbyon complex indicated new activity there that could be part of work to produce new nuclear material that would be a step toward adding to the countrys nuclear stockpile. It has been nearly three years since their last nuclear test and now may be the time for them to test their evolved technology, said Park Jiyoung, an analyst at the Asan Institute for Policy Studies in Seoul.North Korea is believed by experts to have enough fissile material to build 12 or more nuclear weapons, and is believed by U.S. and South Korean officials to be working to miniaturize a nuclear warhead to mount on a delivery vehicle.North Korea conducted three nuclear tests between 2006 and 2013, drawing international condemnation. China joined the U.N. Security Council in a sanctions resolution after the 2013 test.

Libya peace talks hit snag over proposed deal amendments

Posted:

BENGHAZI (Reuters) -Delegates for Libyas internationally recognized government said on Tuesday it was recalling its team from U.N.-backed peace talks with rivals, complaining about amendments to a draft agreement meant to end their conflict. It was the latest setback for United Nations efforts to reach a deal by Sept. 20 over the crisis between Libyas official government and a rival, self-declared administration that has taken over the capital Tripoli since fighting last year.Western powers say the U.N. deal for a unity government is the only solution to the conflict, which has pushed the North African state to the edge of economic collapse four years after the rebellion ousted long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi. The recognized government and elected parliament working out of the east of the country had agreed to a preliminary accord, while the Tripoli faction had still refused to sign during talks last week in the Moroccan city of Skhirat.U.N. envoy Bernardino Leon had announced the two sides had reached a consensus and would soon name candidates for a unity government. But delegates for the recognized government and elected House of Representatives (HOR) said on Tuesday they had recalled their team for consultations over proposed amendments. The House of Representatives have rejected the amendments that were added to the draft, HOR lawmaker Tarek Juroushi told Reuters. Additionally, the HOR have summoned the team in Skhirat.Another HOR lawmaker also confirmed the recall, saying the congress rejected the amendments added in the last round of talks, but not the draft itself. However, Leon played down the differences between the two sides and said it was normal to have such debates in the final stages of the talks. There is still a lack of trust...I think the closer we are to the possibility of a final agreement, the more we will see tough positions, he told reporters late on Tuesday in the Moroccan costal town of Skhirat.Leon added that the internationally recognized parliament negotiating team is not leaving the talks despite the recall from Libya.I think they will be back tomorrow or the day after tomorrow and they will continue the discussions.Negotiators from both sides are under pressure from hardliners who see they can still win ground from conflict. Armed forces on both sides are loose alliances of former anti-Gaddafi rebels who turned against each other or whose loyalties are more to tribal or regional allegiances.Libyas turmoil is an increasing worry for European leaders as Islamic State militants gain ground there and smugglers take advantage of the chaos to send thousands of illegal migrants and asylum seekers across the Mediterranean to Europe.

Cuba's Castro to travel to New York for U.N. General Assembly

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -Cuban President Raul Castro is set to address the U.N. General Assembly this month, the United Nations announced on Tuesday, the first time the Cuban leader will visit the United States as the island nations head of state. The latest public schedule for the General Assemblys annual gathering of world leaders - the so-called General Debate - lists Castro as speaking on the afternoon of Sept. 28. U.S. President Barack Obama and the leaders of Russia and China and Irans president are also due to speak on the same day.Neither the White House nor the Cuban government had an immediate response to queries about whether Castro and Obama might meet on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting, which begins on Sept. 25 with a speech by Pope Francis ahead of a three-day summit on global development. It ends on Oct. 3.The White House has not yet released details of Obamas schedule while in New York. In addition to his Sept. 28 speech to the General Assembly, the United Nations says he is due to address the development summit on Sept. 27.It would be the first visit to the United States as president for Castro, 84, who took over for his ailing brother Fidel provisionally in 2006 and definitively in 2008.Castro has made only one known visit to the United States, briefly visiting Houston in 1959 shortly after the Castro brothers led the revolution that toppled U.S.-backed strongman Fulgencio Batista.Castro and Obama stunned the world last Dec. 17 by announcing détente following more than half a century of Cold War animosity between the two countries separated by 90 miles (145 km) of sea. That led to the restoration of diplomatic relations on July 20 after a 54-year break.Fidel Castro holds the record for the longest speech at the United Nations at four and a half hours. We shall endeavor to be brief, he told the United Nations General Assembly in 1960, before launching into his marathon address.
