Golf: Tiger fires one-over 73 in return from 16-month layoff

Posted:

NASSAU (AFP) - Showing flashes of the form that made him a 14-time major champion before stumbling late, Tiger Woods fired a one-over-par 73 Thursday at the Hero World Challenge in his long-awaited return to competition.Woods, who has missed 16 months following back surgery, made three consecutive birdies to share the lead at four under after his first eight holes of the 18-man invitational event he hosts in the Bahamas. But Woods went five over from there and a closing double bogey left him nine strokes adrift of leader J.B. Holmes. All in all, I felt pretty good, Woods said. It could have been something really good. I hit the ball in three bushes and a water (hazard). Got it going sideways.Fomer world number one Woods, who has fallen to 898th in the rankings, birdied the par-5 third and sixth, par-4 seventh and par-3 eighth holes at 7,302-yard Albany Golf Club in his first competitive round since August 2015.On the par-5 ninth, the courses longest hole at 603 yards, Woods sent his tee shot into tall weeds and sand left of the fairway, botched a chip and took the first bogey of his comeback.I didnt play the par-5s very well in the middle part of the round and consequently got it going the wrong way, Woods said.Another par-5 bogey came at 11 and while Woods birdied the par-5 15th, he found a double-bogey disaster at the par-4 16th and pulled his tee shot into the water to set up his woes at the last.Let a good round slip away at the end, Woods said. Some bushes and some rocks and it can go sideways.Woods was 17th in the field and will play in the first pairing Friday alongside Rio Olympic champion Justin Rose of England, who shot 74.Woods played Thursday alongside fellow American Patrick Reed in often windy conditions to end his longest career layoff after 466 days.Clad in black shirt, pants, cap and shoes, Woods found the left rough on his first shot but put his approach 15 feet from the hole and tapped in for an opening par.By then, surprisingly, Woods found himself into a rhythm, saying the best part of the day was how quickly I got into the competitive flow of the round.By the time I hit my second tee shot, I found the flow of the round. That came pretty fast after not playing for 16 months.Woods went over a raised green at the par-5 third hole but chipped to 18 inches and tapped in for his comebacks first birdie.Revealing a bald spot on the back of his head when removing his cap to wipe sweat, Woods appeared fit and swung with comfort and ease.Woods sank eight-foot birdie putts at the par-5 sixth and par-4 seventh and followed with a two-foot birdie putt at the par-3 eighth before his bogey at nine, a hole he eagled in a pro-am Wednesday.Woods found sand left and right of the fairway at the par-5 11th and took a bogey. At the par-3 12th, Woods made a tense four-foot par putt. At 14, he found greenside sand and then a bunker but escaped with par after making a 15-foot putt, pumping his right fist even before the ball fell.At the par-5 15th, Woods gave himself a 10-foot eagle putt but rolled it two feet past the cup and settled for birdie. But double bogey sixes at 16 and 18 doomed what could have been a solid round. A poor iron shot at 16 found sandy weeds and he found water off the 18th tee then hit the flagstick on his par chip.Woods blamed his poor finish on errors, not fatigue.I just made some really silly mistakes, mistakes I dont normally make, but I havent played in a while, he said. I can clean that up. Weve got three more days. Winds supposed to pump on the weekend and Ill be playing a little bit better.Woods, who turns 41 on December 30, had not played competitively since he shared 10th at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, in August 2015.

Unmanned ISS cargo ship burns up on way to ISS: Russia

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - An unmanned cargo ship travelling to the International Space Station burned up in the atmosphere shortly after launching Thursday, the Russian space agency said, raising concerns over space travel safety.According to preliminary information, as a result of an abnormal situation, the cargo ships loss occurred some 190 kilometres above the remote, unpopulated mountainous territory of (Russias) Tuva region, and most fragments burned up in dense layers of the atmosphere, Roscosmos said in a statement.Roscosmos said earlier Thursday that it had lost contact with the Progress MS-04 ship 383 seconds after it launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, and that its specialists were looking into the problem. The space agency said the loss of the cargo ship will not affect the normal operations of the ISS systems and the subsistence of the stations crew.NASA meanwhile said on its website that supplies at the space laboratory are at good levels. The cargo ship, which had been scheduled to arrive at the ISS on Saturday, was carrying 2.4 tonnes of fuel, food and equipment when it took off from Baikonur, Roscosmos said. The Russian agency said a state commission would probe the incident but did not say whether it would affect future launches. This latest incident represents the second failed launch of a Progress cargo ship in less than two years. In April 2015 a Progress ship disintegrated as it plummeted to Earth, a failure Russia blamed on a problem with a Soyuz rocket. The incident saw Russia put all space travel on hold for nearly three months and forced a group of astronauts to spend an extra month on the ISS. Russia said at the time that because the same type of rocket is used for manned ships, all issues with Progress resupply missions needed to be thoroughly investigated before any manned vessels could be launched. Russia sends three or four such spacecraft per year to supply the ISS. After making their delivery, they plummet back to Earth, burning up in the atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean.Last month Frenchman Thomas Pesquet, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitsky and American astronaut Peggy Whitson launched to the ISS for a six-month mission. The launch followed that of Russians Andrei Borisenko and Sergei Ryzhikov and American Shane Kimbrough in October, which was pushed back by nearly a month due to technical issues. Technical mishaps have complicated plans to extend the periods during which the ISS is fully staffed with six astronauts.Russias Soyuz capsules offer the only way for global astronauts to reach the space station since the American space shuttle programme was retired in 2011.The space laboratory, where a range of research is carried out, has been orbiting Earth at about 28,000 kilometres per hour (17,000 miles per hour) since 1998.

Oil prices jump as European stocks stumble

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rose Thursday, building on a surge triggered by OPECs output-cutting deal, while European stock markets retreated as attention switched to worries over Italys weekend referendum.Stocks were mixed in the US, with the Dow surging to a fresh record, and the Nasdaq falling sharply due to weakness in technology names.Brent crude prices gained 4 percent Thursday, after soaring almost 10 percent Wednesday on news that OPEC had hammered out a deal to cut oil output for the first time in eight years.Oil adding to Wednesdays large gains tells you the market got what it wanted, CMC Markets analyst Jasper Lawler said. But European investors were on edge ahead of an Italian constitutional referendum Sunday that is expected to go against the government of Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, who could resign with a defeat. While the risk of a Eurosceptic party gaining power in Italy is low, a change in government could foster uncertainly and volatility in markets, regardless of how smooth the transition may be, the Eurasia Group said in a note. The banking system is likely to prove the weak link in the event of market turmoil as political uncertainty complicates ongoing plans by several banks to raise capital.Londons benchmark FTSE 100 index ended the day down 0.5 percent, while the DAX 30 in Frankfurt fell 1.0 percent and the CAC 40 in Paris shed 0.4 percent. In the US, Dow jumped 0.4 percent to 19,191.93 almost 40 points above than the previous record set November 25.But the Nasdaq dropped 1.4 percent as the technology sell-off accelerated, with Facebook slumping 2.8 percent, Intel 2.7 percent and Tesla Motors 4 percent.Technology shares have been volatile since the US presidential election, with some analysts fearing protectionist measures by President-elect Donald Trump could harm the industry.Analysts also consider low or no-dividend stocks to be more vulnerable than blue chip companies to higher interest rates, which can boost the value of bonds. Most technology stocks do not pay dividends. The yield on the 10-year bond rose sharply on Thursday.Focus now turns to the release Friday of key US jobs data for November. With dealers certain the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates this month, the figures could provide some insight into its plans for future increases over the next year.Asian stock markets, playing catch up with Wednesdays reaction on European and US indices, closed higher Thursday.Adding to the buying sentiment was a better-than expected reading on Chinese factory output that provided fresh hope the worlds number two economy was stabilizing after years of slowing growth. In Tokyo, the Nikkei rose 1.1 percent, its best close this year, as energy companies soared. Japanese energy explorer Inpex jump 10 percent and Japan Petroleum rocketed 12.20 percent.

Akram says Sri Lanka has pace, needs swing

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Legendary Pakistani paceman Wasim Akram said that Sri Lanka had a promising crop of fast bowlers despite their traditional reliance on spin after holding a coaching session with the islanders Thursday. After spending several hours with the national teams main established strike bowlers and promising youngsters, Akram said there was no lack of raw pace but they needed to develop their ability to swing the ball. Most of the bowlers had a pace of 130 to 140 kmph (kilometres per hour), said Akram who himself bowled at a similar pace in his prime in the 1990s when he was one of the worlds leading players in all formats.Akram, who is now 50, said slower wickets were a fact of life in South Asia, particularly in Sri Lanka whose most successful bowlers have been spinners, including the record-breaking Muttiah Muralitharan. But he said there was no reason why fast bowlers could not thrive on slower tracks as long as they had the right tricks up the sleeve. The idea is to teach them how to believe in themselves and how to fox out the batsmen, he said after a coaching session at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) grounds in Colombo.Akram was joined at the SCC by Sri Lankan legends Aravinda de Silva and Chaminda Vaas, both of whom had played against the Pakistan swing king.Vaas, a former seamer, was recently tasked with identifying fast bowling talent across the cricket-mad island.Regarded as one of the best left-arm pacemen ever to grace the game, Akram took 414 Test wickets and 502 in 356 one-day internationals -- both still a Pakistan record.Sri Lanka Cricket Chief Thilanga Sumathipala said they invited Akram to mentor local players in the next two years and visit the island at least twice a year.We have invited him to be with us in the next two years as our consultant in pace bowling, said Sumathipala. Sri Lanka, who have just completed a clean sweep of Zimbabwe, are to embark on a tour of South Africa later this month where they will play three Tests, three T20 matches and five ODIs.

Maxwell eyes India tour for Test comeback

Posted:

SYDNEY (Agencies) - Australias Glenn Maxwell is eyeing the upcoming tour of India early next year to make his Test comeback after being sidelined for most of the ongoing season.Maxwell, who was named Australia’s ODI player of the year at the Allan Border medal ceremony in January this year, lost his place in the ODI side on the tour of West Indies in June and then his place in the squad for the series in Sri Lanka in September. The 28-year-old, however, struck a brilliant unbeaten 145 in the first T20I match against Sri Lanka during Australia’s tour in September.Maxwell said he has worked on some of the technical and mental aspects of his game. The right-hander, who has played just three Tests since making his debut against India in Hyderabad in 2013, is a handy off-spinner.I’m looking more to the India series now having missed the boat for this Australian home summer, with the way that selections have gone, he said.Whether that comes from white-ball cricket or any sort of cricket I’m playing, whether they come down and watch me at Fitzroy-Doncaster and see how I’m going in club cricket it doesn’t matter. To not get picked was a little bit disappointing. But as I said there are plenty of Tests on the radar. They’ve made it quite clear the direction they’re going to try and go, he added.Australia will tour India for a four-match Test series early next year, with the first game starting in Pune on February 23.

Starc-Hazlewood to be Australia's best ever: Gillespie

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Former Test star Jason Gillespie believes pace spearheads Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will become the greatest fast bowling combination Australia has ever produced.Gillespie, touted as a potential successor to current Test coach Darren Lehmann, said their performance in the recent series defeat to South Africa was a rare bright spot. They finished as the first and third-highest wicket takers with Hazlewood grabbing 17 at an average of 22 and Starc 14 wickets at 30.The duo have now played 17 Tests together since Hazlewoods debut two years ago and have taken 161 wickets alongside each other.Starc and Hazlewood, without doubt, will be the best fast bowling combination Australia has ever produced, Gillespie, also seen a possible replacement for Rod Marsh as chairman of selectors, told cricket.com.au Thursday.Theyll stay fit, theyll stay healthy, theyre learning their trade all the time, they complement each other very well.Starc (is a) really fast, aggressive, nose-and-toes attacking option who can swing the ball late at pace. And then youve got Hazlewood who is an aggressive bowler but in a different way. Hes aggressive with his relentless line and length, hes very disciplined. For his prediction to come true, they will have to surpass some of the greats of the game, including Gillespie who teamed up with Glenn McGrath to take 484 wickets between them in 58 Tests across a 10-year period.Other great partnerships included Merv Hughes and Craig McDermott and Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson. In many years time when were reflecting on great Australian cricketers, those two (Starc and Hazlewood) will be right up there, said Gillespie, now back in Australia after a hugely successful five-year spell coaching English county Yorkshire.
