Lucky Zidane determined to win group

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane insists the European champions arent prepared to settle for second place behind Borussia Dortmund in Champions League Group F despite the potential for an easier last 16 tie.Madrid need to beat the German giants at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday to secure top spot and the second leg of their last 16 clash at home. However, given Real cant face Barcelona or Atletico Madrid even if they do finish second, as clubs from the same country are kept apart, winning the group could prove more dangerous with Bayern Munich or Pep Guardiolas Manchester City potential opponents. Were only thinking about winning. Were not going to look at or think about other things, said the Frenchman, who led Madrid to their 11th European Cup in his first season in charge in May.We want to finish top of the group.Real extended an unbeaten run stretching back to April to 33 games thanks to Sergio Ramoss stoppage time equaliser at Barcelona in El Clasico on Saturday to maintain a six-point lead over Barca at the top of La Liga.Indeed, Real remain on course for five trophies this season having already pocketed the European Super Cup and with the Club World Cup to come in Japan later this month. You have to highlight the sides work rate, added Zidane. Each player is very professional, they all work very hard, they are experienced but still hungry. Theyve won a lot but they still want to win more and more. However, despite the stellar start to his coaching career in line with his feats as one of the greatest players of his generation, Zidane remains humble enough to admit luck has been on his side during a rollercoaster ride in 2016.Its true Im lucky. I do what I love everyday. I have the luck to be at this great club, he added. But it is not just luck, it is the hard work and passion for what I do that helps. I love football.Madrid received a double injury boost as Alvaro Morata and Toni Kroos returned to training on Tuesday leaving just Gareth Bale as Zidanes only absentee.By contrast, Dortmund suffered a blow as Mario Goetze didnt travel to the Spanish capital with the rest of his teammates due to injury. However, the Germans do have a fully-fit and on-form Marco Reus fresh from dishing out three assists in Dortmunds 4-1 thrashing of Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.Reus missed the 2-2 draw with Madrid back in September, but has been a consistent thorn in Reals side in six previous meetings since 2012.Dortmunds top scorer Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will also be out to impress. The African Player of the Year has never hidden his desire to one day sign for Real and fulfil a promise he made to his Spanish grandfather before he passed away two years ago.And Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc believes ousting the defending champions into second place would be a statement of intent. That would top off this outstanding opening round in the Champions League, he told the clubs website. It would be the icing on the cake.

Trump trumpets $50bn investment ahead of victory rally

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Donald Trump announced Tuesday a $50 billion Japanese telecoms investment designed to create 50,000 US jobs, claiming another high-stakes personal win for the American economy before kicking off the second leg of a victory tour. The US president-elect provided no details on the jobs or investment, which he trumpeted following a meeting with Japanese self-made billionaire Masayoshi Son at his headquarters in New York. The real estate tycoon whose election stunned the world first tweeted the announcement, then strode into the lobby of Trump Tower to brief reporters in person. This is Masa of SoftBank from Japan and hes just agreed to invest $50 billion in the United States and 50,000 jobs, the president-elect told reporters, standing with his arm around a grinning Son.Hes one of the great men of industry, so I just want to thank you very much, added Trump before turning to shake the Japanese magnates hand.I just came to celebrate his new job, said Son, repeating his commitment and saying that SoftBank would be investing in start-up companies in America. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Son said the money will be coming from a $100 billion investment fund that he is setting up with Saudi Arabias sovereign-wealth fund and other potential partners.Trump, who defeated Hillary Clinton by promising to create jobs and campaigning as a political outsider who could shake up the system, claimed the Japanese investment as a personal coup.Masa said he would never do this had we (Trump) not won the election the maverick Republican wrote on Twitter. It marked the second time in a week Trump has claimed to have acted personally to save or create American jobs -- allowing himself to make good on a key campaign promise -- after a deal to keep hundreds of manufacturing jobs in Indiana. That agreement with air-conditioning plant Carrier was announced ahead of his inaugural victory rally in Ohio, and has raised his stock among Republican and Democrat voters alike, a Politico/Morning Consult poll found Tuesday.Trump sought to bolster his populist credentials further by threatening to cancel a ballooning contract for two new Air Force One jets: one of the most glittering assets of the US presidency which now need updating. He claimed the contract had escalated to more than $4 billion, as his team said he was committed to keeping government spending down and saving taxpayers money.Converting twin 747-8 jumbo jets into state-of-the-art command centers by 2024 was estimated to cost $3 billion when Boeing won the contract in January 2015.The legendary light blue and white liveried jets -- United States of America emblazoned on the fuselage and an American flag on the tail -- are a powerful and unique symbol of US might, the envy of foreign leaders across the world.I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number. We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money, Trump told reporters in the first of his two rare appearances in the lobby of his Trump Tower on Tuesday. He called the $4 billion estimate ridiculous.Boeing did not directly address Trumps comments or the estimated cost, but issued a statement saying that it looked forward to delivering the best planes for the president at the best value for the American taxpayer.Despite his continued post-election fondness for tweetstorms that have lashed China, US companies moving jobs overseas and the US media, the 70-year-old is ahead of his predecessors in terms of naming his cabinet. His team said that he was filling out his cabinet at the fastest rate since at least 1968 although the most high-profile position, secretary of state, remains unfilled as Trump searches for someone who can articulate his world view on the international stage and with whom he can connect personally. The incoming Republican president will continue his unorthodox victory tour on Tuesday by travelling to Fayetteville, North Carolina, saying thank you to another of the swing states that swept him into office. There, in a 10,000-seat sports arena, he is scheduled to share the stage with John Mattis, the decorated four-star Marine general nicknamed Mad Dog whom he will formally name as defense secretary.Trump first announced that Mattis was his pick while soaking up adulation at his inaugural post-election rally in Cincinnati last Thursday, driving the crowd wild in another drastic break with tradition. If nothing else Trump has thrilled his supporters.I think hes doing a very good job, said 60-year-old business owner Jimmy Tyndall in Lillington, North Carolina.Since he won the election, weve seen a different side, a more focused, more deliberate, certainly making steps for the United States.

Arsenal tops group as PSG draw in Champions League

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Lucas Perez grabbed his first hat-trick in an Arsenal shirt as Arsene Wengers side thumped Basel 4-1 in Switzerland to pip French champions PSG to top spot in their group.Hobbled by an ankle injury, Perez has played sparingly since his arrival from Deportivo la Coruna in August, but the Spaniard was gifted two simple finishes as the Gunners dominated at St. Jakob-Park.The Spaniard slotted home his third on 47 minutes and Mesut Ozil set up Alex Iwobi to score a fourth before Seydou Doumbia notched a consolation for Basel.Ludogorets claimed a memorable point and a place in the Europa League with a 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes where they twice led on a frustrating evening for Unai Emerys hosts.Virgil Misidjan headed the Bulgarian outfit into an early advantage, but Edinson Cavanis superb acrobatic effort brought PSG level on the hour.A mistake from Brazilian centre-back Marquinhos allowed Jonathan Cafu to tee up Wanderson to put Ludogorets back on top, with Angel Di Marias stoppage-time strike not enough to prevent Arsenal climbing above Paris.

Lewandowski scores as Bayern beat Atletico 1-0

Posted:

MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - A Robert Lewandowski free-kick sealed Bayern Munichs 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday in the Champions League with both teams already through to the knock-out stage.Despite the result at Munichs bitterly cold Allianz Arena, Atletico go into the draw for the last 16 as Group D winners with Bayern second.Having been knocked out in the semi-finals by Atletico last season, Bayern avenged their 1-0 defeat in Madrid in September and extended their record streak in Champions League to 15 wins at home.Atletico, who were close to full strength, suffered their first defeat in the group stages this season having been the only team to win all of their previous five.It denied them a club record of a perfect six.Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti switched from the 4-2-3-1 formation, which won 3-1 at Mainz in the Bundesliga, with a 4-3-3 formation, surprisingly leaving Thomas Mueller on the bench.Lewandowski played either side of Arjen Robben and Douglas Costa on the wings with Thiago Alcantara, Arturo Vidal and teenage Portugal international Renato Sanches in midfield.Diego Simeones Atletico made a bright start with Yannick Carrasco, who scored when the hosts won 1-0 in Madrid in September, twice forcing Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer into action.Bayern took the lead when Polands Lewandowski majestically floated his free-kick over the wall from the edge of the box and into the top corner on 28 minutes. It was from almost exactly the same position Lewandowski scored from in Fridays 3-1 win at Mainz, but Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak was powerless to stop it.It was Lewandowskis 24th goal in 24 appearances for club and country this season. In celebration, the 28-year-old shoved the matchball under his playing shirt and stuck his thumb in his mouth amidst rumours in the Polish media that his wife Anna is pregnant.Atleticos defence closed down the Bayern attack after the break with Sanches twice unable to get a clean shot away from good positions due to Madrid shirts blocking him.The hosts starved Atletico of the ball with Bayern enjoying just under 75 percent possession.Thiago squandered a golden chance to add a second on 78 minutes.Costa whipped in a pin-point cross, but the Spain internationals half volley from five metres out flew over the bar with the goal at his mercy.

Messi scores 10th of season as Barca win last group game

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Arda Turan grabbed a hat-trick and Lionel Messi his 10th Champions League goal of the season as a much-changed Barcelona still cruised past Borussia Moenchengladbach 4-0 on Tuesday.Barca had already booked their place in the last 16 as Group C winners, but were looking for a morale boosting win after three successive draws, including the concession of a last minute equaliser to Real Madrid in a 1-1 draw on Saturday.Messi continued to cut the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo as the Champions Leagues all-time top goalscorer when he slotted home the opener after just 16 minutes.Turan then struck his first Barca hat-trick in a 17-minute second-half spell as the hosts took out their frustration on a dispirited Monchengladbach.Whilst Barca can look forward to the last 16 for a 13th straight season, third place in the group behind Manchester City ensures Moenchengladbach drop into the Europa League.Barca boss Luis Enrique retained only Messi, Andre Gomes and Javier Mascherano from the side that started El Clasico on Saturday. And Messis insatiable appetite for goal was rewarded when he exchanged passes with Turan to sweep home his 93rd in the Champions League, now just three adrift of Ronaldo in the race to be the first man to a 100.The five-time World Player of the Year was the persistent threat throughout the first 45 minutes, but Barca captain Andres Iniesta also impressed on his first start for six weeks after a knee injury.Only Moenchengladbach keeper Yann Sommer prevented Messi from adding to his tally before half-time.However, it was Turan who took centre stage after the break as he responded to stinging criticism of his performances in Barcas blip in recent weeks. The Turkish international was perfectly placed to head home Denis Suarezs deflected cross home at the back post before producing a fine low finish into the far corner from Aleix Vidals cut-back.Paco Alcacers search for a first goal since his 30 million euro ($32 million) move from Valencia goes on.Yet, Alacacer did at least make a contribution as it was from his low cross that Turan completed his hat-trick with a powerful finish at the back post that was too strong for Sommer to keep out.Moenchengladbach had the chance to at least salvage some pride before their European campaign starts up again in the Europa League in the new year.Substitutes Raffael and Fabian Johnson combined for the latter to bear down on the Barca goal, but the American international ran too wide when rounding Jasper Cillessen and couldnt turn his effort on target.

Warner's century takes Australia to victory against New Zealand

Posted:

CANBERRA: (AFP) - David Warner slammed his sixth one-day century of the year to lead Australia to a crushing 116-run victory and reclaim the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy series off New Zealand on Tuesday.Warner smashed 119 off 115 balls to propel the Australians to an imposing 378 for five after being sent into bat. They then bowled out the Black Caps for 262 off 47.2 overs at the bat-friendly Manuka Oval.New Zealand had to win in Canberra to keep alive their hopes of retaining the trophy after losing by 68 runs in the opening game in Sydney on Sunday.Warner led the way in Australias third-highest ODI total and was supported by skipper Steve Smiths 72 off 76 balls and Travis Heads 57 from 32 balls, while Mitchell Marsh bludgeoned seven sixes in a unbeaten 76 off just 40 balls. The Black Caps made a spirited attempt to chase Australias hefty total and were 177 for three when Jimmy Neesham fell in the 31st over for 74, ending a 125-run stand with skipper Kane Williamson.Williamson was dismissed nine overs later for 81 off 80 balls with five fours and two sixes, and with him went New Zealands faint hopes of reeling in the Australian target.Williamsons gamble on sending the Australians into bat backfired spectacularly when the home side feasted on a perfect batting wicket. The pugnacious Warner set the tone with his 10th ODI century -- the third century in his last five ODI innings and his first against New Zealand.Only three other Australian batsmen have scored more hundreds in ODIs -- Ricky Ponting (30), Mark Waugh (18) and Adam Gilchrist (16).It was a fantastic wicket and once you keep wickets in hand you can make 100 runs in the last 10 overs, Warner said.It was great batting with the skipper (Smith) and running between the wickets. This year is going great.Warner was out to a low catch from Williamson at cover off medium-pacer Colin de Grandhomme in the 37th over, ending a 145-run partnership with Smith.Smith followed up his career-best ODI score of 164 in Sydney with 72.The Australian skipper, who was struck a painful blow in the groin by a de Grandhomme delivery on 56, sliced to Mitchell Santner at deep point.Head hit his second half-century of the series before he was caught off Tim Southee.Marsh provided late fireworks with some prodigious hitting, including three consecutive sixes off Matt Henry in a lusty cameo.Smith said: 330, 340 runs was probably par. 380 was a big total. You need a lot of things to go right to chase it down. The Black Caps lost both openers by the ninth over, with Tom Latham caught and bowled by Josh Hazlewood for four and Martin Guptill caught behind off Pat Cummins for 45.Neesham looked in good touch with 74 off 83 balls before he was caught in the deep by Mitchell Starc off Josh Hazlewood in the 31st over.James Faulkner got Colin Munro to hole out on 11 to long-on, where Marsh took a safe catch, and Starc had de Grandhomme caught behind for 12.Williamson was deceived by a Pat Cummins slower ball and found Warner in the covers to leave the Black Caps on 232 for six.Wickets tumbled among the lower order, with Cummins finishing with four for 41 as Australia cruised to victory ahead of Fridays third and final ODI in Melbourne.Australia is one of the best sides in the world and at home they are the best side in the world, Williamson said. The death overs really hurt us, and Australia have been showing us how to build partnerships.
