UN Security Council to vote Sunday on Aleppo observers

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS, United States (AFP) - The UN Security Council will vote Sunday on a French proposal to send observers to the flashpoint Syrian city of Aleppo to monitor evacuations and report on the protection of civilians, diplomats said. The council will meet at 10:00 am (1500 GMT) to decide on the draft resolution, despite resistance from Russia, Syrias ally and a veto-wielding Security Council member.France circulated a draft text late Friday stating that the council is alarmed by the worsening humanitarian crisis in Aleppo and by the fact that tens of thousands of besieged Aleppo inhabitants are in need of aid and evacuation.Thousands of trapped civilians and the last remaining opposition fighters in Aleppo were waiting for evacuations to resume on Saturday, a day after the operation was suspended by the Syrian government.Syrian forces this week moved to assert full control over the east of the city, which had been held by opposition fighters since 2012.French Ambassador Francois Delattre said the international presence prevents Aleppo from turning into another Srebrenica, where thousands of Bosnian men and boys were massacred in 1995 when the town fell to Bosnian Serb forces during the Balkan wars. Our goal through this resolution is to avoid another Srebrenica in this phase immediately following the military operations, Delattre told AFP.The draft resolution would request that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon quickly redeploy UN humanitarian staff already in Syria to the city to carry out adequate, neutral monitoring, direct observation and to report on evacuations from besieged parts of Aleppo and protection of civilians inside Aleppo, according to a copy of the text obtained by AFP.Ban would also ensure the deployment of further staff, according to the draft text, which demands that Syria grant access to the observers. The UN chief would report to the council within five days on whether access has been granted by the Syrian government, which has repeatedly blocked UN access during the nearly six-year war.Evacuations were expected to resume under a new deal that would allow civilians and fighters in other besieged towns to leave, according to rebel officials, but the Damascus government made no announcements. The draft resolution would seek to ensure the voluntary, safe and dignified passage of all civilians from Aleppo and other areas under UN monitoring and coordination, with priority given to the wounded and most vulnerable. It demands the protection of all doctors, medical workers, hospitals and ambulances following reports that Syrian forces had bombed all of the medical facilities in Aleppo. The text specifically mentions the need to protect the border hospitals of Atmeh, Darkoush, Bab al-Hawa and Bab al-Salamah, where many of the evacuees would be taken. The council would also demand that urgent humanitarian aid reach Aleppo, which has been under siege since July.US Ambassador Samantha Power said Friday that the observers on the ground would provide a presence as protection. But Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said he found elements of the French proposal questionable, including whether the observers could be quickly redeployed.Ban has urged Syrian parties to resume the evacuation operation and allow civilians to leave safely, saying Aleppo is now a synonym for hell.

Suicide car bombing kills 14 off-duty Turkish soldiers

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Fourteen Turkish soldiers were killed and dozens more wounded Saturday in a suicide car bombing blamed on Kurdish militants targeting off-duty conscripts, the latest in a string of attacks to rock Turkey in recent months. The government said all signs so far suggested the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) was behind the bombing in the city of Kayseri, a usually calm industrial hub in the heart of Anatolia. With tensions soaring in Turkey, nationalist protesters attacked the offices of the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) in Kayseri as well as seven other locations in Istanbul and across the country.Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said a total of 56 people were wounded, half a dozen of them seriously. The death toll rose from 13 to 14 after one more soldier died in hospital, the official Anadolu news agency said.Television pictures showed the bus reduced to a smouldering wreck by the blast, which came a week after 44 people were killed in a double bombing in Istanbul after a football match hosted by the top side Besiktas. That attack, which targeted a police bus, was claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK) seen as a radical offshoot of the PKK. No claim has been made so far for the Kayseri bombing. All indications at present point to the PKK, Deputy Prime Minister and government spokesman Numan Kurtulmus told NTV television. He said that the materials used in the bombing were similar to those used in the Istanbul attack last week. You dont just buy these at the shopping mall... there is a logistical support, he said.Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber, without giving further details.Fifteen suspects have already been detained over alleged involvement in the plot, Kayseri state prosecutor Mustafa Arslanturk was quoted as saying by Anadolu. The bus -- carrying low-ranking privates and non-commissioned officers -- was attacked after leaving the commando headquarters in the city to take the off-duty soldiers on a shopping trip. Those killed were in their early 20s, reports said. Turkish television broadcast harrowing footage of relatives bidding farewell to the coffins at a military airport.Turkeys President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the acts of terror in Turkey were aiming at all 79 million of our citizens together with our soldiers and police. We will fight decisively against these terror organisations in the spirit of a national mobilisation, he said.Turkey has seen a spate of deadly bombings in a bloody 2016 blamed both on jihadists and Kurdish militants that have left dozens dead and put the country on daily alert. In June, 47 people were killed in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbuls Ataturk airport, with authorities blaming the Islamic State group.Another 57 people were killed in August in a suicide attack by an IS-linked bomber at a Kurdish wedding in the southeastern city of Gaziantep.Kurdish militants have twice struck with bombings that killed dozens in Ankara in February and March. The attacks have come with the civil war still raging in neighbouring Syria, where Turkey is staging its own incursion to expel jihadists and Kurdish militia from the border area.Turkey is also still reeling from a failed July 15 coup blamed on the US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen that has been followed by a relentless purge of his alleged supporters from all state institutions. One of the main cities of central Turkey, Kayseri is a key industrial hub with a population of over one million and a stronghold of Turkish nationalists. The city lies close to the famous landscapes of Cappadocia, a magnet for tourists around the world, and well west of the main fighting between PKK and security forces in the southeast.Following Saturdays bombing, dozens of protesters stormed the offices of the pro-Kurdish Peoples Democratic Party (HDP) in Kayseri, draping a Turkish nationalist flag from the top floor, footage posted on social media showed. Its offices were also attacked by protesters in seven districts of Istanbul as well as four other towns and cities across Turkey, the HDP said. Those who fail to take measures to prevent these attacks give an opportunity for provocations, it said in a statement.

Leipzig down Hertha to knock Bayern Munich from top

Posted:

LEIPZIG, Germany (AFP) - RB Leipzig knocked Bayern Munich, who they meet in five days time, off the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 2-0 win at home to Hertha Berlin. With Bayern at bottom side Darmstadt on Sunday, Leipzig took their chance to reclaim top spot with a convincing win at their sold-out Red Bull Arena.Leipzig, who had led for three weeks before last Saturday, are now three points clear. However, Carlo Ancelottis Munich can regain top spot due to their superior goal difference by beating Darmstadt, ahead of Wednesdays mouth-watering clash against Leipzig at the Allianz Arena.Goals either side of the break by striker Timo Werner and burly centre-back and captain Willi Orban sealed Leipzigs win.It put RB back on track after last Saturdays shock 1-0 defeat at Ingolstadt which ended their 13-match unbeaten run -- a record for a team at the start of their first Bundesliga season.I said after the (Ingolstadt) defeat that I wanted to see a reaction and my team didnt disappoint. We showed what we wanted from the first second, said Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl.Berlin coach Pal Dardai, whose side are fourth, admitted: Leipzig were a bit too quick for us.RB went ahead when Guinea midfielder Naby Keita, who later went off with a leg injury and is set to miss the Bayern game, played Werner into the box to dart between two defenders and slot home on 41 minutes. It was the ninth goal in 15 games for RBs top scorer.Werner was shown a yellow against Hertha for play-acting when he went to the turf after being blocked by Berlins centre-back Jens Hegeler on 59 minutes.Leipzig sealed the win on 62 minutes when Orban got on the end of Emil Forsbergs corner kick and powered his header home, giving Hertha goalkeeper Rune Jarstein little chance.Orban looked to have claimed his second on 78 minutes, but the linesman flagged with three Leipzig players offside.Elsewhere, Mainz midfielder Danny Latza hit a hat-trick in his teams 3-1 home win over strugglers Hamburg.Augsburgs caretaker-coach Manuel Baum got off to winning start as Martin Hinteregger scored from a corner in their 1-0 home home over Borussia Moenchengladbach.Ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry rescued a point for Werder Bremen with his sixth league goal this season in their 1-1 draw with Cologne to cancel out Artjoms Rudnevs goal.Ukrainian winger Yevhen Konoplyanka netted for Schalke in their 1-1 draw with Freiburg.Want-away Germany star Julian Draxler returned to Wolfsburgs line-up, having been dropped for their previous two games, to inspire a 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, who had their nine-match unbeaten run ended. It was Draxlers precise corner kick which Dutch defender Jeffrey Bruma headed home on 33 minutes for his clubs first win in five games, but the attacking midfielder is expected to leave in Januarys transfer window.Frankfurts hot-shot Alex Meier fired a penalty over the bar midway through the second-half.This was Eintrachts first defeat since October 1 to leave them sixth while Wolfsburg are just above the bottom three. On Friday, 10-man Borussia Dortmund earned a 2-2 draw at Hoffenheim as the leagues top scorer, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, netted their second-half equaliser for his 16th goal of the season.Hoffenheim remain the only unbeaten team in Germanys top flight this season while Dortmund had Germany winger Marco Reus sent off for a second booking in the first half.

Sevilla up to second in La Liga, Atletico claim much needed win

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - A stunning four-goal blitz in 10 minutes allowed Sevilla to leapfrog Barcelona into second in La Liga on Saturday as Luciano Vietto scored twice in a 4-1 win over Malaga.Atletico Madrid registered a first win in four games as Saul Niguezs excellent 25-yard strike earned a nervy 1-0 victory against Las Palmas. However, Atletico end the year in sixth after wins for Villarreal and Real Sociedad at Sporting Gijon and Granada respectively maintained their one-point lead over Diego Simeones men.Sevilla edge a point ahead of Barca and to within five of league leaders Real Madrid, who are not in league action this weekend as they face Kashima Antlers in the Club World Cup final in Yokohama, Japan, on Sunday.Barca, though, can reclaim second when they host Espanyol in Sundays Catalan derby (1945GMT).Sevilla killed Malaga off with a series of brilliant first-half team moves as Vietto slotted home Steven NZonzis through ball for the opener before being left with the simplest of tasks to double the lead three minutes later from Vitolos determined run and cross. The goals continued to flow as Wissam Ben Yedder added a third before Vitolo made it four before half-time.Sevilla defender Adil Rami got himself needlessly sent-off for two quickfire bookings just after the hour mark and Sandro Ramirez netted a consolation for Malaga with a fine free-kick.Earlier, Atletico ended what coach Diego Simeone called an extraordinary year after reaching the Champions League final in May on a high thanks to Niguezs solitary strike.Taking into account where we have come from, we have ended an extraordinary year, said Simeone.I think any fan of Atletico Madrid has to be proud of a fantastic year and we finished it off with a very solid performance.Niguez also had the best effort of a bright start from the hosts as he volleyed off the inside of the post on 15 minutes.Atleticos struggles have coincided with Antoine Griezmanns loss of form as the Frenchman, who finished third in the running for the Ballon dOr this week, was held scoreless for a ninth consecutive league game.Las Palmas dominated possession throughout with their neat short-passing but the closest they came to breaking the deadlock before half-time was an outrageous hit from fully 40 yards by centre-back Mauricio Lemos that came back off the crossbar. The game swung in two moments at either end just two minutes apart at the start of the second-half.Firstly, Atletico keeper Miguel Angel Moya made a vital save from Roque Mesa on his first La Liga start of the season in the absence of the injured Jan Oblak.Niguez then pounced on a loose ball at the edge of the Las Palmas area to curl home his first league goal of the season.Villarreal, fresh from beating Atletico 2-0 on Monday, remain a point ahead of last seasons Champions League finalists in fourth as goals from Jonathan dos Santos, Nicola Sansone and Alexandre Pato secured a deserved three points in Gijon.Real Sociedad are just behind Villarreal on goal difference as second-half goals from Jon Bautista and Juanmi sealed a 2-0 victory away to Granada.

Sluggish PSG shocked at gutsy Guingamp

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - French title favourites Paris Saint Germain slumped to a 2-1 loss at Guingamp on Saturday to stay four points adrift of leaders Monaco and make it just one point in their past three games.PSG, champions for the past four years to take their overall haul to six -- the Qatari-owned outfit was only founded in 1970 -- huffed and puffed in a dire opening period before being caught by a two-goal salvo after half-time.Angel di Maria and Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani did their best to rouse a sluggish PSG in the opening 45 minutes but could not find a breakthrough on the way to what was the clubs fourth league loss of the season.Like PSG, Guingamp reached the League Cup quarter-finals in midweek and that success over Lyon underlined the western clubs league form which had taken them into the top six before start of play. After the break, it was Guingamp who seized the initiative and they promptly took the lead on 66 minutes as Yannis Salibur fired home inside the box.By then Di Maria had exited the action as the Argentine became ever less effective, Lucas Moura coming on for the former Manchester United man.Four minutes later it was 2-0 as midfielder Nill de Pauw finished off a flowing move from close range with the PSG back four all at sea at the Stade Roudourou.Marcus Coco found Jimmy Briand and he fed De Pauw for a neat clipped finish.Belgian De Pauw was starting for the first time having scored three times from the bench for Antoine Kombouares men earlier in the campaign. Two goals behind, PSG tried belatedly to rally but Cavani had a goal ruled off for offside with 12 minutes remaining. Two minutes later he did reduce the deficit with a close-range finish for his 17th league goal of the season -- but that was as good as it good for the Parisians. The win will have given special satisfaction to Guingamp handler Kombouare, who PSG sacked five years ago to make way for Carlo Ancelotti even though they were top of the table at the time. The big-spenders ultimately came in second behind Montpellier that season but have dominated the league ever since.Nice top the table with 40 points from 17 games and will expect another win bonus Sunday at home to modest Dijon.Monaco, who Sunday host a Lyon side dropping overnight to fifth, are second a point off the pace with PSG three points behind them.Saturdays match between Caen and Metz was meanwhile postponed to Sunday owing to fog in Caens home region of Normandy.

Ibrahimovic brace sees Man Utd close on top four

Posted:

WEST BROMWICH, United Kingdom (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored twice as Manchester United secured their fourth consecutive victory with a comfortable 2-0 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Saturday. The Swedish striker struck early in each half as Jose Mourinhos side pursued their recent upturn in form to move alongside fifth-place Tottenham Hotspur on 30 points in the Premier League table.United are now just three points off the four Champions League qualifying places, albeit having played a game more than third-place Arsenal and fourth-place Manchester City, who meet on Sunday.Ibrahimovic put his team on course for victory in the fifth minute at The Hawthorns when he finished off a splendid move in style.France international Paul Pogba, who dominated midfield throughout, set the ball rolling with a crossfield pass to right-back Antonio Valencia.Valencias lofted pass sent Jesse Lingard hurtling past left-back Allan Nyom before a wonderful, pinpoint cross eluded Gareth McAuley and allowed Ibrahimovic to nod past Ben Foster from 10 yards.Wayne Rooney came close to doubling the lead when his goal-bound header was blocked by Craig Dawson. He would have been forgiven for thinking he had equalled the watching Bobby Charltons all-time record of 249 goals in United colours midway through the first half. The United captain set his sights on goal from the edge of the penalty box and his powerfully struck, rising shot looked certain to strengthen his teams grip on proceedings. But Foster brilliantly tipped the ball onto the crossbar to deny his former England and United colleague a moment of history. There was, though, no keeping Ibrahimovic out of the limelight and moments later, Baggies fans demanded his dismissal when the giant forward flattened Dawson with a crude aerial challenge. The yellow card shown by referee Anthony Taylor was greeted with a chorus of boos.West Brom, currently in seventh place, struggled to make home advantage count, but David de Gea was finally tested when Chris Brunt tried his luck from 20 yards following good work by Nacer Chadli.Salomon Rondon, who scored a 13-minute hat-trick of headers in the midweek 3-1 defeat of Swansea City, then procured a chance to show he was head and shoulders above Uniteds defence. The Venezuelan striker escaped the attentions of centre-backs Marco Rojo and Phil Jones, but nodded Matt Phillipss cross wide of the target.Back came United and Lingard, in for the dropped Juan Mata, should have given United a two-goal cushion just before the break. But the composure he showed when teeing up Ibrahimovic early on deserted him and he shot wildly over with just Foster to beat following Matteo Darmians miscue. It was left to Ibrahimovic to double Uniteds lead 11 minutes into the second half, but this time he needed the help of Lady Luck to get the better of Foster. After picking up possession from Rooney just outside the box, the 35-year-old sprang between two defenders before unleashing a low shot that beat Foster with the help of a deflection off Dawson.Tempers flared briefly when Rondon tangled with Rojo, the West Brom striker appearing to slap the United defender, and both were cautioned. But there was no knocking Mourinhos players out of their stride as they defended with discipline and determination.Ibrahimovic, who now has 16 United goals to his credit, showed his selfish side when he went for goal himself rather than setting up Pogba as United broke and the latter made his disapproval clear to his colleague.Pogbas heart would have been in his mouth when the locals, including Albion manager Tony Pulis, screamed for handball after he was struck by McAuleys header following Chris Brunts corner. But that was as close as the home side got to halting Uniteds momentum.

Diego Costa earns Chelsea 11th straight win

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Diego Costa struck as Chelsea won 1-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday, a club record-equalling 11th straight victory that sent them nine points clear at the Premier League summit.Costas 43rd-minute header was the strikers sixth goal in his last eight games, his 50th Chelsea goal in total and gave Antonio Contes side a third successive 1-0 win.Chelsea once again delivered a controlled, effective performance, giving struggling Palace little chance of getting back into the game once they fell behind. The run is fantastic, said Chelsea manager Conte. Congratulations to my players, not me. I am pleased for them because they deserve this.We can improve though. It is important to understand we are only at the 17th game in the season. We must not look at the table.Chelsea matched their record of 11 consecutive wins from April to September 2009, achieving the feat within the same season for the first time, and remain on course to break Arsenals all-time record of 14.The only blemishes were yellow cards for Costa and NGolo Kante that mean both players will be suspended for next weekends home game against Bournemouth. The match marked the first anniversary of Jose Mourinhos dismissal as Chelsea manager and the contrast in fortunes between the two clubs over the subsequent 12 months has been striking. This time last year, Palace were in sixth position -- they entered 2016 in fifth -- 11 points ahead of Chelsea, who were in danger of getting drawn into a relegation battle. With Guus Hiddink taking temporary charge, Chelsea steadied the ship before this seasons resurgence under Conte, while for Palace, 2016 started badly and got worse.Their dismal run over the calendar year would have seen them relegated if replicated over a whole season.Yet while they came into the game still smarting from the late 2-1 defeat by Manchester United in mid-week, there have been promising signs during a recent spell of improved form.We are showing in the last two games what we have shown most of the year, said Palace manager Alan Pardew. It was a strong performance, but they did not give us anything.Conte opted to restore Nemanja Matic in place of Cesc Fabregas, despite the Spain midfielder scoring the match-winner at Sunderland in mid-week.Eden Hazard, meanwhile, returned after missing the Sunderland clash through injury, with Pedro Rodriguez making way, while Willian retained his place.Palace enjoyed long periods of possession in the first half, but Contes side held them comfortably at arms length before Costa struck. Before then, Palace had the better chances, with Jason Puncheon in particular guilty of missing a clear opportunity when he screwed a first-time shot wide from Martin Kellys right-wing cross. While Pardews side continued to press, with James McArthur heading wide from another Kelly cross, it was clear that Puncheons miss could prove costly.Chelsea had looked comfortable in possession without truly stretching Palace and goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey had barely been troubled. But when the home side lost concentration two minutes before half-time, Costa was on hand to cap a routine move and put the visitors ahead.Hazard moved the ball from left to right to Cesar Azpilicueta, who floated a deep cross towards the far post that should have been dealt with comfortably by the Palace defence.Instead, it caused confusion, with Hennessey starting to come for the ball before stopping and Scott Dann failing to monitor Costas run, enabling the striker to climb above him and head past Hennessey. The hard work of the previous 43 minutes had been undone and instead of holding on, Palace were forced to chase the game after the break. For 15 minutes after the restart, Pardews side pressed, but Chelsea held on comfortably before taking control as they attempted to kill off the game.Fabregas drew a smart save from Hennessey, low to his right, and Marcos Alonso struck the bar from a free-kick.

Report claims CIA, FBI concur Russia hacked to boost Trump

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Federal Bureua of Investigation (FBI) have both concluded that Russia intervened in the US presidential election aiming to help Donald Trump win, an american newspaper daily report stated on Friday.Amid a partisan political debate that the two key US agencies were split over Russian intentions, it said the FBI had reached the same conclusion as the CIA that Moscow hoped to damage the White House prospects of Democrat Hillary Clinton. Moreover, it stated that it was made clear in a message CIA Director John Brennan had sent to the US spy agencys staff.Earlier this week, I met separately with FBI (Director) James Comey and DNI Jim Clapper, and there is strong consensus among us on the scope, nature, and intent of Russian interference in our presidential election, Brennan said in a message to the agencys workforce, it claimed citing US officials who saw the message. The three of us also agree that our organizations, along with others, need to focus on completing the thorough review of this issue that has been directed by President Obama and which is being led by the DNI.Under pressure from Congress and the political parties to show proof of the agencies conclusions, last week Obama ordered a review of election-related cyberattacks to be completed before he leaves office on January 20.We are committed to ensuring the integrity of our elections and this report will dig into this pattern of malicious cyberactivity timed to our elections, take stock of our defensive capabilities and capture lessons learned, said White House Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz.

Afghanistan: Gunmen kill five female airport staff members

Posted:

KANDAHAR (AFP) - Gunmen on motorcycles shot dead five female airport workers and their driver in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, underlining the dangers facing employed women in the conservative, conflict-torn country. The women, employees of a private company that provides luggage and body search services for female passengers, were in a van driving to the airport in Kandahar when three gunmen opened fire at them. All the women and their driver aboard the van were killed. The attackers fled the area and we have launched an investigation, provincial spokesman Samim Kheplwak told AFP.The women had been concerned about their security after receiving death threats from people who disapproved of their career, Kandahar airport director Ahmadullah Faizi said.Taliban militants who implemented a harsh version of Sharia law during their 1996-2001 rule, not allowing women to work outside their homes, said they were not behind the killings. But employed women have long faced a high risk of attacks from insurgent groups and conservative Islamists.Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said the killing of innocent civilians and women showed the weakness of the enemies of Afghanistan. The United Nations also condemned the killings and called for a prompt, effective, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident.Afghan women have made giant strides since the Taliban regime was ousted in 2001, but they are still absent from public life and continue to suffer high levels of violence, oppression and abuse. The Afghan attorney generals office recorded more than 3,700 cases of violence against women in the first eight months of 2016, with 5,000 cases recorded in the whole of the previous year.

China slams US for 'hyping' up naval problem seizure

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Beijing on Saturday slammed the US for hyping up its seizure of a naval probe in the South China Sea, amid escalating tensions between the two countries. The unmanned underwater vehicle was taken around 50 nautical miles (90 kilometres) northwest of Subic Bay in the Philippines late on Thursday, according to the Pentagon, which called the capture unlawful and demanded its immediate return.Chinas defence ministry said it would give back the device in an appropriate manner, without giving details of the handover. The hyping up from the American side is inappropriate and unhelpful to the swift resolution of the problem, the ministry said.China said it strongly opposed US reconnaissance activities and had asked Washington to stop them. The Chinese side will take the necessary steps in response, the statement added. The incident comes as President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly infuriates Beijing by questioning longstanding US policy on Taiwan, calling Beijing a currency manipulator and threatening Chinese imports with punitive tariffs. There are broader tensions in the South China Sea, where China has moved to fortify its claims to the region by building out tiny reefs and islets into much larger artificial islands.Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam have competing claims in the South China Sea, which is laced with the worlds most heavily travelled international trade routes. While the US takes no position on sovereignty claims in the South China Sea, it has repeatedly stressed all maritime claims must comply with international law.Its military has conducted several freedom of navigation operations in which ships and planes have passed close to the sites Beijing claims.
