5. 4. 3. 2. 1. 1... An extra second to see out 2016

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - As if 2016 has not been long enough, the years dying minute will last an extra second to make up for time lost to Earths slowing rotation, timekeepers say.Countries that use Coordinated Universal Time -- several West African nations, Britain, Ireland and Iceland -- will add the leap second during the midnight countdown to 2017 -- making the years final minute 61 seconds long. For others, the timing will be determined by the time zone they live in, relative to UTC.This extra second, or leap second, makes it possible to align astronomical time, which is irregular and determined by Earths rotation, with UTC which is extremely stable and has been determined by atomic clocks since 1967, the Paris Observatory said in a statement. The observatory houses the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), responsible for synchronising time. The sequence of dates of the UTC second markers will be: 2016 December 31 23h 59m 59s, 2016 December 31 23h 59m 60s, 2017 January 1, 0h 0m 0s, the IERS website states. The adjustment is necessary because Earths rotation is not regular -- it sometimes speeds up, sometimes slows down, but is gradually slowing overall. This is caused by factors including the Moons gravitational Earth-braking forces, which give rise to the ocean tides. The result is that astronomical time -- based on the length of an Earth day -- gradually falls out of sync with atomic time -- which is measured by nearly 400 super-accurate atomic clocks dotted around the world.Atomic time or TAI, in turn, is used to determine UTC, used for civil timekeeping globally.TAI is exactly 36 seconds ahead of UTC, a difference that keeps growing as leap seconds are added, and will reach 37 seconds on January 1.When leap seconds were introduced in 1972, 10 seconds had to be added to UTC, followed by another roughly every 18 months thereafter, according to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the US Department of Commerce. The last was added on June 30, 2015.Leap seconds are added in order to keep the difference between UTC and astronomical time (UT1) to less than 0.9 seconds, the NIST website explains.Usually leap seconds are added when UTC is ahead of UT1 by 0.4 seconds or more. The process, it added, can create problems for data logging applications and telecommunications systems.Special attention must be given to these systems each time there is a leap second. 2016 -- annus horribilis for many with its rash of celebrity deaths and political upsets -- has also had a leap day -- February 29 -- a four-yearly occurrence to keep the calendar synchronised with Earths movement around the Sun.

Broom century lifts New Zealand to 251

NELSON (AFP) - Neil Broom scored a run-a-ball 109 not out in a defiant lone stand for New Zealand batting first against Bangladesh in the second one-day international in Nelson on Thursday. It was a maiden century for Broom as New Zealand struggled to 251. It was a good toss to win for Bangladesh skipper Mushrafe Mortaza who needs a victory to keep the three-match series alive after New Zealand won the first ODI by 77 runs. He put New Zealand into bat to make the most of the heavy overcast conditions. When the clouds cleared and the pitched flattened out Bangladesh maintained the pressure. Only Broom, back in the New Zealand side after nearly seven years in the wilderness, and whose previous best was 71, was able to offer any resistance. His 109 off 107 deliveries included three sixes and eight fours. He offered only one chance when dropped by debutant wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan in the penultimate over.Mashrafe had Bangladesh in charge from the start when removed Martin Guptill with the third ball of the match. He also dismissed the big-hitting Colin Munro for three in the middle of the innings and came back to remove Lockie Ferguson at the tail. Taskin Ahmed dismissed Kane Williamson (14) for the second successive match and first ODI century-maker Tom Latham struggled to 22 before he fell lbw to Shakib Al Hasan leaving New Zealand 47-3 in the 14th over.Jimmy Neesham added a quick 28 in a 51-run stand with Broom for the fourth wicket and Luke Ronchi was New Zealands second highest scorer with 35 when adding 64 with Broom for the sixth wicket. For Bangladesh, Mashrafe took three for 49 while Taskin Ahmed and Shakib Al Hasan both took two for 45.

Ryan Giggs in contention for the Swansea City manager job

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United great Ryan Giggs is one of the names being considered for the managerial vacancy at Swansea City, according to British media reports on Wednesday.Swansea, second from bottom in the Premier League, are looking for a new manager after American Bob Bradley was sacked just 11 games into his tenure on Tuesday.Welshman Giggs, 43, was interviewed twice prior to Bradleys appointment as the successor to Francesco Guidolin in October.Other men in the frame are said to include Swansea native Chris Coleman, who led Wales to the semi-finals at Euro 2016, and Gary Rowett, who was recently sacked by second-tier Birmingham City.First-team coaches Alan Curtis and Paul Williams have been placed in temporary charge for Swanseas home game with Bournemouth on Saturday. The most decorated footballer in British history, Giggs briefly took charge at United following David Moyess dismissal as manager in April 2014.He had previously worked under Moyes and was Louis van Gaals assistant from 2014 to 2016, but left United when Jose Mourinho was appointed manager last July.Reports at the time said Giggs had paid the price for an underwhelming interview when he first went for the Swansea job.I met with them a couple of times, but in the end there was just mixed messages from the football side and the ownership side of the club, Giggs told ITV after missing out to Bradley.I just felt their ambitions did not really match mine, so it didnt quite work out.

Liverpool targets City after crushing Stoke

Posted:

LIVERPOOL (AFP) - Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is looking forward to pitting his wits against Pep Guardiola again after seeing the Reds fight back to beat Stoke City 4-1 in the Premier League on Tuesday. The Reds moved back above Manchester City into second place in the table, and to within six points of leaders Chelsea, after claiming their third consecutive win and maintaining their unbeaten record at Anfield this season. The win, secured thanks to goals by Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino, Daniel Sturridge and a Giannelli Imbula own goal, set Liverpool up nicely for their New Years Eve home clash with City, whose manager was in the Anfield crowd doing a spot of scouting.Im not sure whether he watched a lot of games in the last few weeks in other stadiums. That is the first sign it is a special game and we are already looking forward to it, Klopp said. The German -- a direct rival of Guardiolas when the pair were in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich respectively -- admitted that it can be difficult to go to see opposition teams in action these days because the Premier Leagues superstar managers risk spending more time signing autographs than actually watching games.I respect them a lot also but I have not been at their stadium this season. Maybe he just wants to watch good football, he joked. Its a difficult game for both teams but exciting and the best thing is its at Anfield. They are an outstanding side and we are not too bad.Liverpool have won eight and drawn two of 10 games at Anfield this season and have not been beaten in front of their own fans in 23 games going back to January.City can therefore expect to face a daunting task but Stoke -- the last visiting team to win at Anfield -- looked like they could spring a surprise after Jonathan Walters put them in front in the 12th minute.Lallana equalised and Firminos fine strike just before half-time made it 2-1 before Liverpool ran away with the game in the second period. The Brazilians goal, his sixth of the season, came three days after he was arrested and charged for drink driving in the centre of Liverpool, and Klopp said there had been no prospect of the player being dropped. No because he was the best man in training so there was no chance to leave him out. No chance. He was outstanding, he said. There were important contributions from Sadio Mane, who forced Imbula into turning the ball into his own net, and Sturridge, who came off the bench and seconds later had his first goal of the season.Captain Jordan Henderson was also excellent, but Klopp said it was not the moment to shower praise on individuals.I dont think they need it. In this moment they are all happy about the team performance, the result, about the goals we scored, he said.If we speak about one player we speak always about the past but I already think about the next game and hopefully we can do better.Stoke boss Mark Hughes has still never won at Anfield as a manager and he was left to rue defensive errors that contributed to his teams downfall. We deservedly took the lead. The disappointment is that we allowed them back into the game just before half-time. We went in 2-1 down feeling a little bit hard done by, said Hughes. We made a couple of individual errors again for the next two goals and it was very difficult to come back from that. Because of individual and collective errors we have been beaten by four goals which is a little bit unfair on us, added Hughes, whose side are without a win in four and go to Chelsea next.

Tottenham thrash Southampton 4-1 to go to near top 4

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Dele Alli scored twice as Tottenham came back from behind to win emphatically, 4-1, at Southampton on Wednesday.Harry Kane, who missed a penalty, and substitute Son Heung-min were also on the score-sheet in a game that saw Virgil van Dijk give Southampton an early lead.Nathan Redmond was sent off soon after Kane had made it 2-1 and although the England striker failed to convert the resulting penalty Southampton tried in vain to prevent a hefty defeat that moved Tottenham to within a point of fourth-place Arsenal in the Premier League table. It took Southampton all of 69 seconds to take the lead, through van Dijk. The Netherlands defender, coveted by a number of Premier League rivals and valued in the 30million bracket, rose to meet James Ward-Prowses free-kick to send a downward header beyond Hugo Lloris in the Tottenham goal. The home side were full of energy and aggression - the brand of football Pochettino brought with him to the St Marys Stadium before leaving for Tottenham in May 2014.The Argentinian could not have enjoyed the way his players were being put under constant pressure and there were a number of nervy moments as they attempted to stem the tide of Saints attacks.Former Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama had given away the free-kick for the goal on his first return to his old club and Mousa Dembele was booked for chopping Nathan Redmond down to end another attack.Fraser Forster had little to do in the Southampton goal but found himself picking the ball out of the net in the 19th minute when Moussa Sissoko saw his cross from the left deflected upwards off Redmond. That allowed Alli to out-jump van Dijk and plant a header past Forster that went in off a post.Parity perhaps flattered Tottenham but they made good use of their good fortune to fashion a number of chances.Christian Eriksen twice failed to hit the target after getting himself into promising shooting positions before Wanyama, having burst into the box and got the better of van Dijk, saw his shot blocked by Saints skipper Jose Fonte.Tottenham made a much better start to the second half and took the lead in the 52nd minute through the previously-dormant Kane from a corner won by Kyle Walker and delivered by Eriksen. Southamptons marking was poor to say the least as the England striker rose unchallenged to head into the top corner.Jose Fonte headed over from a free-kick at the other end before the home side found themselves a man down when Redmond was sent off for impeding Alli from behind in the act of shooting.Referee Mike Dean awarded a penalty and sent Redmond packing before Kane stepped up to send the spot-kick soaring over the bar in the style of a rugby conversion. The extra man was proving useful to Tottenham and Southampton were relieved when Eriksens effort bounced back off the crossbar.Danny Rose poked another effort wide after Saints made a triple substitution, with Dusan Tadic, Shane Long and Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg coming on to pep up their depleted ranks with just under 20 minutes remaining.Lloris had been a spectator for a while but almost gifted Pierre-Emile Hjbjerg, one of three 72nd-minute Saints subs, a comedy equaliser. The Frenchman kicked the ball straight to Hjbjerg, who was so surprised he sent the ball straight back instead of locating an empty net.Son Heung-min, Tottenhams first substitute, wrapped up victory in the 85th minute, with a cool finish across Forster after Saints had been caught on the break.Southampton couldnt wait for the final whistle, especially after Alli strode through to slot in a fourth after the hosts were caught out at the back once again.

Football: Celtic stretch their lead at top of the table

Posted:

GLASGOW (AFP) - Celtic stretched their lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they warmed up for Saturdays Old Firm clash against rivals Rangers with a comfortable 2-0 win over Ross County. The visitors had looked dangerous on the break before Erik Sviatchenko fired Celtic into a 38th minute lead with a long range effort, Stuart Armstrong adding a second in first half stoppage time. The win was Celtics 14th in a row as they remain unbeaten in 23 domestic matches since the start of the season.Brendan Rodgers side will now head into the second Old Firm derby of the season at Ibrox with a 16-point lead over second-placed Rangers, who were held to a 1-1 draw away to St Johnstone.Ross County had put pressure on Celtic from the start as they refused to allow the Hoops to settle on the ball. The Staggies created the early opportunities and Christopher Routis caused panic in the Celtic defence as he flashed a fierce strike across the six-yard box that was crying out for a touch to divert it into the net.Liam Boyce then messed up a chance following a quick breakaway move as he pulled his low drive wide after being teed up perfectly by Martin Woods.Despite this, Celtic should have taken the lead shortly after through Scott Sinclair who was picked out in the box by a sublime cross from Emilio Izaguirre, but the English winger flashed his header off-target.Jozo Simunovic then misjudged the flight of a high ball to allow Alex Schalk in behind the Celtic defence. The ball was then worked to Woods via Boyce but the Ross County man dragged his shot wide. The sides seemed to be heading to the break on level terms before Sviatchenko broke the deadlock with his first goal of the season. The Danish defender collected the ball just inside the County half and evaded one challenge before firing a powerful 25-yard strike into the bottom corner past County keeper Fox who should have done better. The Hoops extended their advantage in first half stoppage time. Mikel Lustig slipped a pass to Armstrong who twisted one way then another before drilling a fierce strike past Fox to net for the second successive match.Celtic showed no signs of easing up in the second half with Leigh Griffiths winding Fox as he lashed a shot straight at the keeper before the Scotland striker somehow managed to head over from just four yards out.Craig Gordon had a quiet evening in the Celtic goal but was called into action late on to tip a sizzling strike from Woods round the post and then stop a Andrew Davies header on the line as his side kept their third straight clean sheet.Glasgow rivals Rangers are the opponents on Saturday and their four-match winning run was brought to an end by St Johnstone. The Gers got off to the perfect start in Perth when Barrie McKay netted in the 23rd minute.Their lead lasted just five minutes, however, as a slack pass-back from Rob Kiernan was intercepted by Steven McLean who evaded Wes Foderingham before sliding it into the net.
