Cricket: Granite-tough Sri Lanka braced for South Africa

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Buoyed by victories in their most recent five Test matches, Sri Lanka embark on a two-month tour of South Africa with a three-day match against a youthful South African Invitation XI, starting in Potchefstroom on Sunday. It is likely to be a relatively gentle introduction to a tough challenge in a country where Sri Lanka have struggled on four previous tours. In anticipation of having to deal with South Africas strong fast bowling attack on pitches with pace and bounce, the Sri Lankan batsmen practiced on granite surfaces before leaving for the tour.Sri Lanka have been beaten in eight of the ten Test matches they have played in South Africa, with just one win and one draw. But they have done better in one-day internationals.Although South Africa have won 15 times on home soil, Sri Lanka have had seven wins and a tie in 2003 which ended South Africas hopes of progressing in a World Cup they hosted. The current tour includes three Test matches, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals. It is Sri Lankas first tour of South Africa in five years and there are only five survivors from the 2011/12 tour -- captain Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, Rangana Herath, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva.Chandimal made his debut and hit two half-centuries in Sri Lankas only Test win in South Africa, in the second Test in Durban, while Herath took nine wickets and was man of the match.Mathews and Chandimal helped Sri Lanka in a 3-0 home Test series win against Australia but missed a recent 2-0 victory in Zimbabwe because of injuries. Both are likely to be key players if Sri Lanka are to challenge a South African Test team which is coming off a third successive away series win in Australia. After a succession of leg injuries, Mathews is confident that he will be able to play a full all-rounders role in a country where his seam bowling is likely to be needed more than in his home country. The first Test, though, is in Port Elizabeth, which usually provides the slowest and lowest of South Africas Test pitches. The Sri Lankans arrived in South Africa last Sunday and have had a full week of preparation in Potchefstroom, a university town an hours drive from Johannesburg which is a favoured training venue for a variety of international sporting teams and individuals. The Invitation XI consists mainly of some of South Africas most promising young players, led by experienced Cape Cobras and South Africa A batsman Omphile Ramela.Off-spinner Dane Piedt is the only Test player in the side.Sri Lanka Test squad: Angelo Mathews (captain), Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Dhananjaya de Silva, Upul Tharanga, Lahiru Kumara, Vikum Sanjaya, Nuwan Pradeep, Dushmantha Chameera, Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera, Rangana Herath.Fixtures:December 18-20, South African Invitation XI, PotchefstroomDecember 26-30, First Test, Port ElizabethJanuary 2-6, Second Test, Cape TownJanuary 12-16, Third Test, JohannesburgJanuary 20, First Twenty20 international, CenturionJanuary 22, Second Twenty20 international, JohannesburgJanuary 25, Third Twenty20 international, Cape TownJanuary 28, First one-day international, Port ElizabethFebruary 1, Second one-day international, DurbanFebruary 4, Third one-day international, JohannesburgFebruary 7, Fourth one-day international, Cape TownFebruary 10, Fifth one-day international, Centurion

Football: Conte says Chinese financial muscle a threat

LONDON (AFP) - The new-found spending power of Chinese clubs is a danger to teams all over the world, even the Premier League, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte warned on Friday. The Italian, whose side will try to make it 11 league wins on the bounce against Crystal Palace on Saturday, made the remarks when asked about reports Chelseas Brazilian midfielder Oscar is to join Shanghai SIPG for an estimated 60 million pounds ($76m, 71.5m euros). The league leaders iconic but ageing captain John Terry, who is out injured and like Oscar not first choice, has also been linked with a move to China, where teams are snapping up foreign players on mammoth wages.Conte believes that means Chinese clubs could entice the best players.I dont know exactly the amount or the situation, said Conte of Oscar. But now we have to wait. I think when it will be the moment, youll know Oscars situation. The Chinese market is a danger for all teams in the world. Not only for Chelsea, but all teams in the world.Conte, 47, who made his name as a manager with Juventus, for whom he also played with distinction as a combative midfielder, said China may have the money but the quality remained in the Premier League.I think that this league is fantastic and to play in this league is a great opportunity, a great honour, said Conte, who will have Belgian star Eden Hazard back this weekend after he missed the midweek 1-0 victory over Sunderland because of a knee injury. You must be very proud to play in this league because I think now its the best league in the world.Oscar is one of three big South American names to be linked to a move to China this week.Veteran Argentine striker Carlos Tevez has been courted by Shanghai Shenhua while Manuel Pellegrini told The Sun he would welcome with open arms compatriot Alexis Sanchez.Sanchez is locked in protracted contract talks with present club Arsenal and could expect to be paid 500,000 a week by Pellegrinis Hebei China Fortune.

Pep denies rumours that Bravo wants a return to Spain

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Pep Guardiola made clear on Friday his belief Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is happy at Manchester City, amid reports the goalkeeper could be on his way back to Spain. The 33-year-old, Chiles most-capped player who skippered them to two successive Copa America titles, left Barcelona to join City for 17m ($22 million, 19 million euros) in August as Guardiola wanted a new first choice to replace England number one Joe Hart.Bravo has not had the easiest start to life in Manchester -- he was sent off on his return to the Camp Nou in the Champions League in October, and has kept just two clean sheets in his last 14 games. There have been reports the keeper has told his team-mates he wants to rejoin Barcelona, even though that would mean him being back up to Marc-Andre ter Stegen.Guardiola, though, is adamant Bravo is happy in England.I didnt read that. Sometimes, when you (journalists) come here, Simon (Heggie, Citys head of media relations) will make a briefing as to what you are going to ask me, said Guardiola. But he didnt speak about that issue.I dont read too much of newspapers, of the Twitters and Instagrams and Facebooks.I spoke with Bravo in the last days, and with his wife as well.I saw him here.Their little daughter as well, but I couldnt speak with her because she is just one year old.And he told me he is so happy.Guardiola has seen his side drop to fourth place after a strong start that saw them win their first six Premier League games. But they got back on track by beating Watford 2-0 on Wednesday, giving the squad a lift as they prepare for Sundays meeting with third-placed Arsenal. However, Guardiola will have to do without German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. The 26-year-old, who joined from Borussia Dortmund in June for a reported fee of 20 million ($25.1 million, 23.8 million euros), was forced off with a knee injury during that game, and Guardiola admitted he faces a long absence. Its so, so difficult for him, said Guardiola. We are sad for him. We are going to miss him a lot. A lot. But its what it is. Hes unlucky, sometimes football is like this.In his short time in England, Guardiola has already faced criticism for lacking pragmatism, an accusation also levelled frequently at his Arsenal counterpart Arsene Wenger.Guardiola is full of respect for the way in which Wenger has pursued an attractive style of play during his 20 years in North London.Call him the commander-in-chief, Guardiola said.Hes the boss, no? Hes the chief for Arsenal.Thats why I call him that. Im the commander-in-chief for Manchester City. I saw many Netflix series and thats why. Commander-in-chief and colonel, I use a lot.He has been here a long time. When that happens at a club such as Arsenal, its because a person is doing a good job.I understand its not easy to win the Premier League, but I have a lot of respect about his career.Ive said many times that I admire the way he tries to play and especially the quality of the players they like and they buy.

Sanchez tells Arsenal to keep him happy

LONDON (AFP) - Alexis Sanchez has told Arsenal he is very happy at the Premier League club, but the Chile forward insists it is up to them to come up with the right contract to keep him.Sanchez has 18 months remaining on his current deal and both he and Arsenal team-mate Mesut Ozil are reportedly seeking parity with the Premier Leagues top earners before extending their deals. The 27-year-old has been linked with a 500,000-per-week move to the Chinese Super League and, with negotiations dragging on, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has expressed his displeasure at continued questioning over Sanchezs future.Sanchez, who has 14 goals this term, had kept quiet about the situation, but he has now has put the ball firmly in Arsenals court. It really doesnt depend on me, Sanchez told Sky Sports when asked about a new contract on Friday. If they want to show confidence in me. Im very happy at the club. I love all the staff. Im very grateful for everybody here.Im focused more on winning football matches. Im staying concentrated on that.It depends on Arsenal. I enjoy the relationship with the fans. I want to achieve more for them. I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League.

Moeen Ali ton gives England opening day honours

CHENNAI, India (AFP) - Joe Root urged centurion Moeen Ali and the rest of the England batsmen to put India under pressure on Friday after the visitors made a solid start in the fifth and final Test in Chennai. The tourists were 284 for four at stumps with Ali (120) and Ben Stokes (five) at the crease after they elected to bat first at Chennais MA Chidambaram Stadium.Ali mounted crucial partnerships with Root (88) and Jonny Bairstow (49) to revive the England innings after the visitors lost their openers in the first hour of play.Alis 146-run third-wicket stand with Root remained the highlight of the innings as England, who have already lost the series 3-0, search for a consolation win.It would be really nice to go home with a win under our belt and we have set it up nicely today, its (now) about tomorrow going on and taking it forward, Root told reporters on Friday. And hopefully Moeen can carry on how he has played today, Stokesy can get in and play one of his mouth-watering innings he is capable of doing, said Root.Ali, who was promoted to number four following a rejig in Englands batting order in the Mohali Test, absorbed the pressure after Roots dismissal to pilot the innings. That added responsibility of batting higher up in the batting order he has taken really well on this tour and proved it with two brilliant hundreds, said Root.Root was also responsible for the rebuilding act after the the fall of Keaton Jennings (1) and skipper Alastair Cook (10) but he missed out on what would have been his second ton of the series. The Englishman was given caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja by the on-field umpire but India successfully reviewed the decision after a disturbance in the snicko suggested the ball had grazed the bat before going into the keepers glove.Root did not seem happy with the call as he dejectedly walked back to the pavilion but later termed his reaction as childish.I was convinced I didnt hit it. Obviously the technology suggests otherwise... you probably just have to take it on the chin - I must have got a fine one on it, said Root, who was seen practising on a road inside the stadium on Thursday.Ali, who was dropped on nought at mid-wicket, showed grit during his controlled knock as he carried on the good work with Bairstow. The left-right batting combine of Ali-Root and then Ali-Bairstow thwarted the Indian bowling attack which had looked dangerous in the morning session.Good innings from Root. Moeen Ali was the perfect foil for him. Took his time to settle down, Indias fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar said.Ishant Sharma, back in action after an illness, struck first for the hosts on a moisture-laden pitch to get Jennings caught behind for one.Englands all-time leading run-scorer Cook got past the 11,000-run mark on the first ball of the match, but he quickly fell to Jadeja, who ended up claiming three wickets.

Reus off as Borussia Dortmund hold Hoffenheim

BERLIN (AFP) - Hoffenhem and Borussia Dortmund fought out an entertaining 2-2 draw Friday which saw both sides stay on the fringes of the Bundesliga title race.Hoffenheim, who move third with the point after their fourth draw in five games, now trail Bayern Munich and Leipzig by six points having played a game more with Dortmund two points further adrift. The draw saw the hosts remain the only unbeaten club in Europes top leagues aside from Real Madrid.Their coach Julian Nagelsmann, the youngest in the Bundesligas history, was up against his ex-mentor Dortmunds Thomas Tuchel and it was Hoffenheim who drew first blood on three minutes when Mark Uth netted.Mario Goetze levelled in the 11th minute only for Sandro Wagner to put Hoffenheim back in front on 20 minutes-- albeit after 27-year-old referee Benjamin Brand found he had not pushed aside Sven Bender to head in.Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang made it 2-2 with his 16th of the season three minutes after the restart after good work by French international Ousmane Dembele. But Dortmund found their creative thrust somewhat blunted when Dembele had to go off midway through the second period through injury.Further hampering Dortmunds cause was a dismissal four minutes before the interval of Marco Reus for a second booking which looked harsh after a tussle with Nadiem Amiri.Reus kicked the wall in the tunnel as he headed for an early shower.Aubameyang lightened Dortmunds mood when he clipped in his 100th goal for the club in 165 appearances.Surprise package Leipzig on Saturday host fourth-placed Hertha Berlin while Bayern travel to tailenders Darmstadt.

Obama vows to send 'clear message' to Putin, warns Trump

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama vowed Friday to send a clear message to Russia for trying to sway the US election, while calling on Donald Trump and Republicans to put national security before politics.Obama all-but accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of personally ordering an audacious cyber hack that many Democrats believe gravely wounded Hillary Clinton in a closely fought election. The US intelligence community has concluded that a hack-and-release of the Democratic Party emails was designed to put Trump -- a political neophyte who has praised Putin -- into the Oval Office. But with tensions rising between the worlds two preeminent nuclear powers and US political anger near boiling point after Trumps shock election, Obama sought to exude calm while promising a measured response.Assuring Americans that the ballot itself was not rigged, he promised to send a clear message to Russia or others not to do this to us, because we can do stuff to you.Noting that not much happens in Russia without Vladimir Putin, Obama said he had personally told the former KGB officer when they met in September to cut it out.In fact we did not see further tampering of the election process, he told journalists before heading for his Christmas vacation in Hawaii.Regarding specific acts of retaliation, Obama said some would be carried out publicly, but that in other cases, the message will be directly received by the Russians and not publicized.Obamas comments come as Putin registered a major propaganda victory in Syria and became a focal point of American political debate.Despite those coups, Obama belittled Russia as a second rate power with little going for it, using language that is sure to infuriate the status-conscious Russian leader. The Russians cant change us or significantly weaken us. They are a smaller country, they are a weaker country, their economy doesnt produce anything that anybody wants to buy except oil and gas and arms. They dont innovate. But Obamas sternest message may have been for Trump and other Republicans who have played down the cyber attack.Over a third of Republican voters approve of Vladimir Putin, Obama said citing a recent poll. Ronald Reagan would roll over in his grave. How did that happen?Obama urged the president elect -- who has repeatedly questioned Russias involvement -- to accept an independent nonpartisan investigation. My hope is that the president-elect is going to similarly be concerned with making sure that we dont have potential foreign influence in our election process. While Obama has ordered his own inquiry, a political battle is already being waged in Washington between Republicans who want a Congressional process they can control and Democrats who want to see something like the bipartisan 9/11 Commission. One way I do believe the president-elect can approach this that would be unifying is to say that we welcome a bipartisan, independent process, Obama said. The outgoing president also issued his fiercest warning shot for the president-elect about embracing illiberal politics.Mr. Putin can weaken us just like hes trying to weaken Europe if we start buying into notions that its okay to intimidate the press. Or lock up dissidents. Or discriminate against people because of their faith or what they look like.Republicans were unimpressed by Obamas efforts to dial back tensions with Senator Ben Sasse accusing Obama of a mere scolding of dictators.Instead of President Obamas vague we can do stuff, Congress should debate upending Putins calculus with a full menu of diplomatic, economic, military, and cyber responses.

Obama: Syria's Assad, Russia and Iran have blood on hands

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama declared Friday that Bashar al-Assads Syrian regime, Iran and Russia are responsible for the carnage in Aleppo and argued there was nothing Washington could have done to stop the war, short of a military takeover of Syria. And he warned Assad, who has been engaged in a brutal civil war against opposition forces since 2011, that he will not be able to slaughter his way to legitimacy. The world as we speak is united in horror at the savage assault by the Syrian regime and its Russian and Iranian allies on the city of Aleppo, he told an end-of-year news conference. This blood and these atrocities are on their hands, he said.Obama also admitted to reporters that he had asked himself whether the United States did enough to halt the conflict. There are places around the world where horrible things are happening and -- because of my office, because Im president of the United States -- I feel responsible, he said. Is there something I could do that would save lives and make a difference and spare some child who doesnt deserve to suffer? But the president said there had been no public appetite for the kind of large-scale US military intervention earlier in the war that he believes would have been the only way to halt it.Unless we were all in and going to take over Syria we were going to have problems, he said. It sounded like the right thing to do but it was going to be impossible to do this on the cheap. The US leader, who leaves office on January 20 to make way for President-elect Donald Trump, called for impartial observers to deploy to monitor efforts to evacuate civilians from the city.Obamas White House has been engaged in a diplomatic effort to convince Russia to bring Assad to the table to negotiate a peace deal with the Syrian opposition. But all attempts to secure a ceasefire have rapidly broken down, and now Russia is working with Turkey to oversee an evacuation of the last rebel-held pocket of Aleppo. On Friday, the Syrian government suspended that operation, trapping thousands of civilians and rebel fighters in the city and increasing fears of a bloodbath to come.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon warned that Aleppo had become a synonym for hell and urged the parties to take all necessary measures to allow safe resumption of this evacuation process.Senior US officials, including Secretary of State John Kerry and Washingtons ambassador to the UN Samantha Power, have warned Assad against carrying out a Srebrenica-style massacre. They have also warned the defeat of Aleppo will not end the civil war but instead foment extremism among Assads opponents and have called for war crimes investigations. But Washington has not been able to mediate the start of a credible peace process, nor separate so-called moderate rebels from Al Qaeda-linked extremists.I cannot claim that weve been successful and so thats something that, as is true with a lot of issues and problems around the world I have to go to bed with every night, Obama said. But I continue to believe it was the right approach given what realistically we could get done.More than 310,000 people have been killed since early 2011, when Assad brutally repressed anti-government protests and provoked a civil war.More than half the population has been displaced, with millions becoming refugees, placing a huge burden on neighboring countries and sparking a political crisis in Europe.Meanwhile, the Islamic State jihadist group has taken advantage of the chaos to seize part of eastern Syria and set up a capital in the city of Raqa.US troops and warplanes are helping locally recruited militias fight IS in the east, but have not intervened against Assad, who has Russian military backing.

The Attrocious Dec 16 APS Attack and its Aftermath

Posted:

Rightly two years ago from today, an incident unfolded that could outrightly be called as one of the darkest days in mankind’s history. It was the day that saw the most inhumane crime of its kind committed by a few devilish folks on earth and a day that will be remembered for the most spineless massacre in modern history. The massacre that took away the lives of more than 150 people, most of them schoolchildren on December 16, 2014 was something never heard of and sorrowful reactions pouring from all the corners revealed how barbaric this bloodshed was.The then British Prime Minister, David Cameron’s reaction describes the brutality of this attack. The scale of what has happened in Pakistan simply defies belief. It is a dark, dark day for humanity when something on this scale happens with no justification. There is not a belief system in the world that can justify such an act. I think what this shows is the worldwide threat that is posed by this poisonous ideology of extremist Islamist terrorism. It is nothing to do with one of the worlds great religions - Islam, which is a religion of peace. This is a perversion.Bollywood icon Anupam Kher elaborated the incident through an open letter to the terrorists in the following words,……….Words cannot adequately despise the monstrosity which you have committed. True, there have been greater pogroms in history such as Lidice, Dachau, the purges of Stalin, the Cultural Revolution of Mao, the killing fields of Cambodia. But these were political movements or results of conflict. What you have done today is something not reflected in history; the slaughter of innocents…………..One can easily comprehend the grief of the innocent lives lost through the words of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry who expressed his grief in the following words,Mothers and fathers send their kids to school to learn and to be safe and to dream and to find opportunity. And particularly at this military school in Pakistan, they sent their kids there with the hope and dreams of serving their country. Instead, today they are gone, wiped away by Taliban assassins who serve a dark and almost medieval vision, and the opposite of everything that those mothers and fathers wanted for their children. The images are absolutely gut-wrenching: young children carried away in ambulances, a teacher burned alive in front of the students, a house of learning turned into a house of unspeakable horror. These were just a few examples of the world lost in grief on December 14, 2014 when Peshawar bled and reactions piled up in millions within no time. The responsibility of this heinous school attack was claimed by Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) as they elaborated that it was as revenge for Operation Zarb-e-Azb that was started in summer 2014.The attack was unique in some aspects as FIA determined that the gunmen who carried out the assault were all foreign fighters. The attackers included,Abu Shamil (also went by Abdur Rehman)— A Chechen fighter and thought to be the ringleader of the group.Nouman Shah Helmand — An Afghan citizen from Helmand Province; the U.S. had placed a $500,000 bounty upon Shah.Wazir Alam Herat — An Afghan citizen from Herat.Khatib al-Zubaidi — An Arabic speaker and an Egyptian citizen.Mohammad Zahedi — An Arabic speaker and a Moroccan citizen.Jibran al-Saeedi — An Arabic speaker and a Saudi citizen.Immediately after the school attack, the military operation speeded up and air-strikes on terrorists resorts were carried out on a massive scale. In one of the airstrike carried out by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah narrowly escaped a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) strike on 25 November.A significant progress occurred on Dec 17, when PAFs F-16s and JF-17s jets bombed terrorist hideouts in the Tirah Valley while targeting 57 terrorists. A total of twenty additional aerial bombing operations were also carried out using dynamic targeting.A UAV strike targeted and killed five suspected terrorists in North Waziristan on Dec 20. Moreover, around 21 TTP terrorists were also killed by PAF strikes in Khyber Agency while they were trying to escape to Afghanistan. The incident also transformed the political scenario of the country as Imran Khan- the leader of one of the opposition parties, was holding a marathon sit-in aka Azadi March against the government had to end the protest owing to security reasons.National Action PlanOn Dec 16, the National Action plan was also drafted in the wake of the APS Peshawar attack so as to work out strategy to combat terrorism. In this regard, a parliamentary committee was formed that estimate the post-Peshawar tragedy circumstances and also to talk over necessary laws and amendments in connection to terrorism. Henceforth, the 21st Amendment to the Constitution provided us with twenty-point National Action Plan for the eradication of terrorism from Pakistan. At a press conference on Feb 2015, DG ISPR revealed that Pakistan army has killed or arrested most of the Army Public School (APS) attack plotters.

Modi admits to Indian role in Fall of Dhaka

Posted:

NEW DELHI (Dunya News) – Narendra Modi, Prime Minister (PM) of India has once again admitted to conspiring to divide Pakistan and confessed Indian role in separating Bangladesh from Pakistan on December 16, 1971.Modi addressed a ceremony organised in Indian capital today where he talked about Fall of Dhaka and following India’s decades old false stance, he said that Indian army outshone Pakistani troops in 1971 war.He used the platform to shush honest viewpoints of the opposition members after they had demanded proofs of Indian ‘surgical strike’ in Pakistan in September, a claim that was refuted by the world media and international powers for having no grounds. In September, after an attack on Indian Brigade Headquarters in Baramulla District of occupied Kashmir valley claimed over 18 lives, Indian government and military made a mockery of institutions by making claims of crossing the Line of Control (LoC) in the dark hours and decimating ‘terror launch pads’ before returning after ‘successful mission’.The claims were refuted by the media and Pakistan Army among others as there were no decimated structures, casualties and shells while not a single troop would have crossed the LoC without a bullet going through his head and that only had he missed a mine. However, Modi’s speech today came on the day when Pakistan marks 45th anniversary of Fall of Dhaka as India succeeded in dividing East Pakistan and West Pakistan through its covert and public role on December 16, 1971.
