Double Istanbul bombings kill 15, wound about 70

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Fifteen people were killed and almost 70 wounded in Istanbul on Saturday when twin bombings struck the heart of the city close to the stadium of top flight football giants Besiktas after a major game.A car bomb detonated outside the Vodafone Arena football stadium on the shores of the Bosphorus after the Super Lig match between Besiktas and Bursaspor while a suicide attacker struck a nearby park, officials said. The authorities did not say who was behind the blasts but the attacks were the latest in a year that has seen Istanbul and other Turkish cities rocked by a string of attacks blamed on Islamic State jihadists and Kurdish militants. The health ministry said in a statement that 15 people were killed and 69 wounded. An act of terror targeted our security forces and citizens at Besiktas tonight, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a statement. Besiktas is also the name of the neighbourhood around clubs arena.Erdogan said the blasts shortly after the end of the match sought to cause maximum loss of life.We have witnessed once more here in Istanbul the ugly face of terror which tramples down any form of value and morals, he said.Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said one blast took place outside the stadium and another at Macka Park, a popular meeting place just above the sports venue. The explosion at Macka Park is believed to have been carried out by a suicide bomber. He said the stadium attack targeted a bus of riot police.State broadcaster TRT showed images of the wreckage of a car, engulfed in flames with emergency services swarming around the scene outside the sports venue.Other footage showed severely damaged police vehicles, while witnesses said the force of the blast had shattered the windows of several nearby homes. An AFP correspondent near the stadium saw ambulances gathering in the aftermath of the explosion, as well as broken glass on the road.I heard two explosions in less than one minute, followed by the sound of gunshots, one witness told AFP on condition of anonymity.Besiktas football club issued a statement condemning the attack and confirming none of the fans or players were hurt.Terrorists... attacked our heroic security forces who ensure that both our fans and Bursaspors supporters are safe. We will stand firm against the vile attackers who will never achieve their goal.Police cordoned off the area around the stadium immediately after the blasts, which occurred near the Ottoman-era Dolmabahce palace that houses Prime Minister Binali Yildirims offices in Istanbul. The scene is also about a kilometre (0.6 miles) from the busy Taksim Square, a magnet for tourists.Erdogan was in Istanbul at the time of the blast at his residence in the suburb of Tarabya further down the Bosphorus, state media said. The government slapped a broadcast ban on footage of the attack, as is becoming typical in the aftermath of major incidents in the country. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturdays attack. In his statement, Erdogan said that the name or the method of the terrorist organisation which perpetrated the vile attack did not matter.Nobody should doubt that we will defeat terror, terror groups, terrorists and of course the forces behind them, with Gods help, he said.In June, 47 people were killed in a triple suicide bombing and gun attack at Istanbuls Ataturk airport, with authorities blaming IS.Another 57 people, 34 of them children, were killed in August in a suicide attack by an IS-linked bomber at a Kurdish wedding in the southeastern city of Gaziantep. But there have also been deadly bombings claimed by the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK), seen as a splinter group of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).The US embassy in Turkey condemned the latest attack. Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Istanbul tonight, the embassy wrote on Twitter. We condemn tonights cowardly attack, and salute the courage of the Turkish people as we stand with them against terror.Turkey is still reeling from a failed July 15 coup blamed by the government on the US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen that has been followed by a relentless purge of his alleged supporters from state institutions.Saturdays attack came after the Turkish army and its Syrian rebel allies on Saturday entered the IS bastion of Al-Bab in northern Syria, according to a monitoring group.Al-Bab is the last bastion IS has in Syrias northern Aleppo province. The explosions also came hours after Turkeys ruling party submitted a parliamentary bill that would expand the powers -- and possibly the tenure -- of Erdogan, a move his opponents fear will lead to one-man rule.

Non-OPEC oil states agree to cuts in 'historic' deal

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - Eleven countries agreed on Saturday to cut their oil output, teaming up with the OPEC cartel in an exceptional bid to end the worlds glut of crude and reverse a dramatic fall in income.Russia and 10 other non-OPEC states will reduce their production by more than half a million barrels per day (bpd), OPEC announced. The deal will take effect from the start of 2017 and last for six months, though it may be extended depending on market conditions.I am happy to announce that a historic agreement has been reached, said Qatars Energy Minister Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).The cut will contribute to OPECs own initiative to ease a saturated market and end a price slump that has brutally affected the economies of many oil producers. On November 30 its members announced a slash in output by 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) beginning in January, to 32.5 million bpd.Under that deal, OPEC called on non-member producer states to lower their output by 600,000 bpd. Saturdays deal approves cuts totalling 558,000 bpd.Russia had already signalled it would provide half of that production cut in the first half of 2017.Among the other countries that will contribute cuts Kazakhstan agreed to reduce production by 20,000 bpd, Mexico 100,000 bpd, Oman 40,000 bpd and Azerbaijan 35,000 bpd, according to Bloomberg. The deal also includes Malaysia, Bahrain, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, South Sudan and Brunei. This is a truly historic event, the first time that so many oil-producing countries are meeting in one room, to accomplish what weve done, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak told a press conference. In the room we had more than half of the global oil production, he said.In a statement following the meeting, OPEC said the other oil giants were working to achieve oil market stability in the interest of all oil producers and consumers.A monitoring committee, comprising three OPEC and two non-OPEC members, will now be set up.Sada said OPEC would continue its efforts to persuade non-OPEC producers to join the reduction effort. And in another signal to the markets, the cartels leading producer Saudi Arabia announced that it would go substantially beyond its commitment of production cuts made last week.In a speech to the conference earlier, Novak stressed the plunge in oil prices had led to severe consequences. What the past two months have shown is that there is a growing consensus among producers that the market recovery process has taken far too long... It has had a major impact on all our countries, in terms of economic growth, heavy losses in revenue and deep social spending cuts.As for the impact on consumers, he said: We only have to look at the damaging levels of deflation in some OECD countries, as well as the record low interest rates, sometimes in negative territory in real terms, which is partly attributed to lower oil prices.Oil prices had climbed Friday as hopes grew of a deal. In late European business, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude stood at $51.44, 60 cents up on the day, while Brent rose 20 cents to $54.09.The November agreement ended weeks of uncertainty and volatility on crude markets, pushing prices above $50 for the first time in a month. It also represented a dramatic reversal from OPECs Saudi-led game plan, introduced in 2014, of flooding the market to force out rivals, in particular US shale oil producers. The strategy saw production outstrip demand, causing prices to plunge from more than $100 a barrel in June 2014 to near 13-year lows below $30 earlier this year.OPEC produces around 40 percent of the worlds crude so needed non-OPEC members to join the cuts to drain current stockpiles. But Bloomberg calculations, based on OPEC data, indicated there would be little overall reduction in record oil inventories in 2017 -- even if OPEC could convince non-members to come on board.

Bayern regain top spot as Leipzig lose unbeaten record

BERLIN (AFP) - Robert Lewandowski netted twice as Bayern Munich returned to the top of the Bundesliga on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Wolfsburg after RB Leipzig lost their unbeaten record.Leipzigs shock 1-0 defeat at bottom side Ingolstadt, who finished with ten men, ended their three-week stint as leaders.Carlo Ancelottis Bayern cut the three-point gap and regained top spot on goal difference with both teams on 33 points. Were top of the table again -- thatll be good for our Christmas party quipped Thomas Mueller, who scored his first league goal in 999 minutes, before Bayerns festive celebrations on Saturday night.Second-placed RB had their 13-match unbeaten run ended -- a record for a club at the start of their first Bundesliga season -- as coach Ralph Hasenhuettl endured a horror return to Ingolstadt, who he left last season.Defeats always hurt, it doesnt matter against who, said Hasenhuettl, whose side battered the Ingolstadt goal with 13 shots to the hosts four. The opponents forced their own game on us, we had little influence and didnt show enough courage. We were better after the break, but we couldnt make our 300 percent (more shots) count. The ball didnt want to go in.This is a set-back, but we can handle it.Ingolstadt had Australia striker Mathew Leckie sent off for two yellow cards in quick succession late on, but his team held on and the win took them off bottom leaving Darmstadt, who lost 1-0 at Freiburg, last.Bayern and Leipzig are now six points ahead of nearest rivals Hertha Berlin, who suffered a shock 1-0 home defeat to Werder Bremen after Germany striker Max Kruse scored the first-half winner.Bayern host Leipzig on December 21 at Munichs Allianz Arena, where the hosts romped to a heavy win over Wolfsburg. The 2015 German Cup winners have fallen from grace and defeat leaves Wolfsburg 15th, only clear of the relegation zone on goal difference.Head coach Valerien Ismael, who took over after Dieter Hecking was sacked in October, left Germanys attacking midfielder Julian Draxler out of the squad. The 23-year-old cost 35 million euros ($37.3m) from Schalke in August 2015 and Wolfsburg say they are open to sell him in Januarys winter break.Bayern started with Jerome Boateng on the bench with a shoulder injury and his centre-back partner Mats Hummels was missing with gastroenteritis.Arjen Robben opened the scoring by curling his superb shot around Wolfsburgs goalkeeper Diego Benaglio on 18 minutes.Lewandowski netted five goals in a record nine minutes in the same fixture in September 2015.On Saturday, the Poland hot-shot needed just 21 minutes to get on the scoresheet. To compound Wolfsburgs problems, defender Marcel Schaefer went off with a knee injury after 23 minutes as it finished 2-0 at the break.Lewandowski added his second on 58 minutes, Mueller grabbed his first league goal of the season by firing home Robbens pass on 76 minutes then Brazil winger Douglas Costa added Bayerns fifth just before the whistle.Fresh from their 2-2 Champions League draw at Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund needed a 90th-minute Marco Reus goal to rescue their 1-1 draw at ten-man Cologne.Cologne took the lead when Germany defender Jonas Hector fired in a long-range free-kick and Artjoms Rudnevs slipped his marker, heading past Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller on 28 minutes. But Reus rescued a point when he cooly slotted Adrian Ramos cross for a point which kept Dortmund sixth as Cologne had Salih Ozcan sent off late on for a second yellow.Hamburg stay in the bottom three despite their 1-0 home win over Augsburg as both sides finished with ten men.The hosts took the lead when Nicolai Mueller hit the post and Serbia international Filip Kostic converted the rebound on 68 minutes.Hamburg had Lewis Holtby sent off just before the break for lashing out after Augsburgs midfielder Dominik Kohrs rough tackle. But Kohr was also shown a red when he earned his second yellow soon after. On Friday, Hoffenheim were held to a goalless draw at Eintracht Frankfurt but are now the only unbeaten team in Germanys top flight.

Mesut Ozil proves worth as Arsenal go top of the league

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Mesut Ozil provided a timely reminder of his importance to Arsenals title hopes with a superb header in a 3-1 win against Stoke that moved the Gunners to the top of the Premier League on Saturday. The futures of Ozil and Alexis Sanchez remain uncertain with the Arsenal duo entering the final 18 months of their current deals. But both were central figures as Arsene Wengers team secured the two-goal margin of victory that lifted them above Chelsea on goals scored.Ozils stunning second-half header, a goal that came about in controversial circumstances in the eyes of Stoke manager Mark Hughes, was the highlight of the win.Arsenal had fallen behind to Charlie Adams 23rd-minute penalty but levelled before half-time thanks to Theo Walcotts 10th goal of the season.Ozil and Alex Iwobi struck after the break to shift the pressure onto Chelsea 24 hours before Antonio Contes side host West Bromwich Albion.Wenger had complained angrily about referee Lee Masons decision to award a penalty after Stokes Joe Allen was floored by a leading elbow from Granit Xhaka. But it was Hughes turn to complain when Ozil scored in space vacated by Stoke left-back Erik Pieters, who was out of position after receiving treatment at the other end of the pitch.Arsenal had started the game positively, finding plenty of room down the right hand flank. But for the most part, Stoke managed to restrict the home side to the occasional half-chance before they took the lead through Adams penalty.Shortly before the Scotland international gave the visitors the lead, the midfielder had shown his quality with a lofted ball that allowed Marko Arnautovic to set up an opportunity that Allen sent wide. And Adam showed impressive composure to send Cech the wrong way from the spot after Allen had been floored by Xhaka in a clumsy challenge between the pair.Arsenals problems increased when Shkodran Mustafi was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and the introduction of Hector Bellerin prompted a reshuffle of the home back-four.But the substitutes most significant first half contribution came at the other end of the pitch when he produced the cross that led to Walcotts 42nd-minute equaliser.Stoke had continued to appear vulnerable on their left hand side, with Allen providing only limited cover for Pieters. The left-back was isolated once again when the ball was played out to Bellerin from a central position and the Spaniard drilled in a low cross that was turned home by Walcott at the near post. The goal brought relief for Wenger and his players who had been growing increasingly frustrated in their efforts to cancel out the controversial opening goal. But it was soon the visitors turn to feel hard done to when they fell behind to Ozils clever, looping header.Moments before, Stoke had pressed forward with Pieters requiring treatment after clashing with Bellerin as he went for a far post header and the left-back had not recovered his ground when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain picked out Ozil with a floated pass. There was no doubting the quality of the Germany internationals finish but the playmaker was helped by Pieters absence. While Stoke fumed, Arsenal continued to press with Xhaka and Oxlade-Chamberlain both testing Grant with long-range shots. But Arsenal were unlikely to squander the lead and finally established the two-goal advantage they needed to go top when Iwobi picked up the loose ball after Sanchez had been fouled on the edge of the Stoke area. The referee played the advantage, allowing the Arsenal youngster to wrap up the points with a right-foot finish.

Vardy scores hat-trick as Leicester thrash Manchester City

Posted:

LEICESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Jamie Vardy ended his Leicester City goal drought with a brilliant hat-trick as the Premier League champions crushed Pep Guardiolas shambolic Manchester City 4-2 on Saturday.Leicester returned to form in style, racing into a 4-0 lead as Vardy ended a run of 16 club games without a goal by scoring a fine treble.Andy King also scored for the champions as Guardiolas men were torn apart, suffering an embarrassing reverse despite late goals by Aleksandar Kolarov and Nolito halving Leicesters winning margin. After a bruising 3-1 defeat by Chelsea last weekend, Guardiola faces more tough questions, while Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri can finally enjoy a much-needed win after a poor defence so far of their title.A dream start for Leicester came in only the third minute as Vardys barren spell ended with the finishing touch to a pleasing move.Riyad Mahrez started it with a fine touch to bring down a high ball and lay it off to Islam Slimani, who slid a pass to the feet of Vardy. The England striker slotted a shot into the bottom-left corner with the composure of a man who had been scoring prolifically. The lead was doubled within three minutes courtesy of another goal from the top drawer as Robert Huth headed down a Christian Fuchs throw and Slimani laid off a pass to King. But it was still no more than a half-chance until the Wales midfielder unleashed a fantastic curling shot that flew in off the fingertips of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. On 12 minutes it might have been 3-0 when another Huth knock-down found Slimani, but the Algerian striker sent a shot over.Visitors City produced a rare moment of promise on 15 minutes when Kevin De Bruyne tried his luck from just inside the Leicester penalty area with a shot that flew just wide. But five minutes later the damage got worse for the visitors as Leicester turned on the style for their third goal.A long pass from Fuchs was cushioned brilliantly by Mahrez into the path of Vardy, who rounded Bravo and rolled a low shot into the gaping goal.It could have been 4-0 moments later when Mahrez danced his way to the edge of the area with some fine footwork, but saw his shot turned away to safety by Bravo. The visitors were denied a penalty in first-half stoppage time when Kelechi Iheanacho went down under Marc Albrightons heavy challenge.Seconds later Albrighton presented a chance for 4-0 on a plate for Slimani, only for the striker to head an excellent cross wide. The visitors increased their tempo after half-time and began to pin Leicester back inside their own half.Pablo Zabaleta and De Bruyne both had shots blocked in a goalmouth scramble before Ilkay Gundogan went close to giving his side a lifeline, shooting narrowly wide from Iheanachos lay-off.But Slimani had another chance when he glided into the penalty area, only to see his shot saved low down by Bravo.Vardy made it 4-0 on 78 minutes as he completed his hat-trick, pouncing on a terrible back-pass from John Stones and scoring with a shot that just crept over the line from an almost impossible angle.City made the scoreline look a little more respectable in the closing stages with two impressive goals of their own.First, Kolarov curled a fine free-kick into the top corner from 20 yards with Citys first shot on target and then Nolito side-footed home superbly from a Kolarov cross. But Leicester held on to claim a vital three points and condemn their visitors to a crushing defeat.

La Liga: Messi double brings Barcelona relief

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Lionel Messi struck twice as Barcelona recorded their first win in four La Liga games to close to within three points of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga with a 3-0 win at Osasuna.Barca should have killed the game off in the first half as Luis Suarez and Messi missed two big chances each against La Ligas bottom side. However, Suarez rounded off a fine team move to break the deadlock just before the hour before Messis double in the final 17 minutes moved him ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo as La Ligas top scorer with 11 for the season.Real can extend their lead once more and set a new club record unbeaten run of 35 games when they host Deportivo la Coruna later on Saturday. We are Barcelona and we know we can never give up, Suarez told BeIN Sports Spain. We are candidates to win the league, it doesnt matter if we are four, five, six or seven points behind, we wont give up.Barca were in desperate need of a lift after conceding in the last minute to Real in last weekends El Clasico. The Catalans upturn in performance since captain Andres Iniestas return from a six-week injury layoff continued in the first half at Osasuna, but Barca were in danger of paying for their profligacy in front of goal.Suarez fired wide when through on goal and then hit the post inside 20 minutes.Osasuna remain five points off safety and it was easy to see why they are still without a home win all season as the hosts were opened up at will.Suarez turned provider for Messi, but Nauzet Perez rushed from his goal to block. And the goalkeeper frustrated the five-time World Player of the Year again moments later by just raising a hand in time to divert Messis attempted chip behind. We were patient and generated a lot of chances, said Barca boss Luis Enrique. It was key to go in front and calm ourselves down. The goals came in the second-half, but we deserved to go in front in the first-half and have a much easier game.Sergio Leon gave Barca a scare at the start of the second-half when his brilliant lob over Marc-Andre ter Stegen came back off the underside of the bar.Barca created fewer chances in the second half, but were more clinical.Sergio Busquets and Messi combined to release Jordi Alba on the left and his low cross was rolled into an unguarded net by Suarez despite Osasuna calls for offside. The second goal came about in similar fashion 13 minutes later as Alba again got to the by-line and his cross was volleyed home by Messi at the near post. And Messi didnt need any help for his second in stoppage time as he wriggled clear of three Osasuna defenders and left Perez on the floor before lifting the ball high into the net.Valencia remain above the relegation zone only on goal difference despite more penalty heroics from goalkeeper Diego Alves in a 3-2 defeat at Real Sociedad.Alves saved the 23rd penalty of 47 he has faced in Spanish football from Carlos Vela, but it mattered little as a Willian Jose double and Juanmis injury time strike moved Sociedad up to fourth.Valencia have won just one game in eight since former Italy boss Cesare Prandelli took charge in October.

Football: Falcao scores hat-trick for rampant Monaco

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Radamel Falcao netted a hat-trick as Monaco crushed 10-man Bordeaux 4-0 to go provisionally top of the Ligue 1 table on Saturday.Djibril Sidibe got the opener and Falcao found the net in fortunate fashion to double the principality clubs lead inside five minutes at the Matmut Atlantique.Falcao added two more goals in the second half, including one from the penalty spot, while Bordeaux ended a wretched evening a man down after the sending-off of Adam Ounas.Europes top scorers, Monaco have now scored 53 goals in just 17 league games, only four fewer than they managed in the whole of last season. As a result they are now top of the table, above Cote dAzur rivals Nice on goal difference, with defending champions Paris Saint-Germain four points back in third position.PSG, who have run away with the title in recent seasons, are at home to Nice in a huge game on Sunday evening at the Parc des Princes. It was a great evening, said Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim. This year I think the league is more evenly balanced. Monaco are better, Nice too and I think Lyon are also going to come back. Its much more competitive and that is good for France. Our attackers have more quality and are making the difference. Our aim is just to keep progressing, that is the mentality.Monaco have often struggled in Bordeaux down the years but they stunned their hosts by opening the scoring inside 80 seconds as Bernardo Silva set up France full-back Sidibe to find the net with a low finish across goalkeeper Jerome Prior. It was 2-0 soon after when Prior tried to palm out a low cross from Valere Germain but the ball ricocheted off Falcao and into the net.Any hopes Bordeaux harboured of a comeback in the second half were nipped in the bud as Monaco made it 3-0 on the breakaway in the 50th minute.Thomas Lemars long ball found Germain and he squared for Falcao, who took a touch before stabbing home. The Colombian was handed the chance to complete his hat-trick from the penalty spot just after the hour mark when Nicolas Pallois petulantly threw Silva to the ground inside the box.Falcao stepped up to score, taking his tally for the season to 10 goals in 11 league games and 14 goals in all competitions in what is a remarkable renaissance.Jardim added: He is a great goal-scorer. In the last two years things did not work out for him but this year, with the work he has put in, he has come back and is scoring goals.Bordeauxs misery was completed when Algerian prospect Ounas was sent off for kicking out at Sidibe after fouling the Monaco man.Earlier, Bafetimbi Gomis scored his eighth goal of the season late in the game as Marseille won 2-1 away at Dijon to register a first away victory of the campaign.Maxime Lopez, 19, scored his first professional goal to put OM in front early on but ex-Newcastle United midfielder Mehdi Abeid had equalised for Dijon towards the end from a free-kick.That match had been postponed on Friday evening due to thick fog in Burgundy and fog forced the postponement of the encounter between Nantes and Caen scheduled for later on Saturday.Swedish international Ola Toivonen scored a hat-trick as Toulouse beat bottom club Lorient 3-2 in the mist, while Lilles revival under interim coach Patrick Collot continued as they beat Montpellier 2-1 for a third successive win.Bastia climbed out of the relegation zone by beating Metz 2-0 and Nancy beat Angers by the same scoreline.

Ramos to the rescue as Real set 35-game unbeaten record

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos produced more late drama by powering home a stoppage-time winner to beat Deportivo la Coruna 3-2 as the European champions set a new club record of 35 games unbeaten in all competitions. Two goals in two minutes from Joselu just after the hour mark looked set to end Reals unbeaten streak stretching back to April after Alvaro Moratas opener. However, even without the rested Cristiano Ronaldo, Real maintained their six-point lead at the top of La Liga as Mariano Diaz equalised six minutes from time before Ramoss late intervention. When you fight to the end, these things happen, said Ramos, who also netted a last minute equaliser against Barcelona last weekend. It wasnt a great performance. We made mistakes which were costly, but at the end we managed to turn it around.Zinedine Zidanes men have now surpassed Reals previous record mark of 34 games unbeaten from the 1988/89 season under Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker.Mentally it helps to have gone 35 games unbeaten. It gives you strength, said Zidane.Sergio is special because it is not the first time.He is our captain and with many others he is the soul of this team.Zidane made a host of changes ahead of Reals trip to Japan for the Club World Cup in the week ahead with Ronaldo left out of the squad alongside Karim Benzema and Luka Modric. The European champions were exceptionally lucky not to be behind at the break as Celso Borges headed against the post and the rebound somehow escaped Guilherme with the goal gaping.Madrid looked to be on track for the three points early in the second half when Morata turned 25 yards from goal and arrowed a drive into the far corner. However, the game was turned on its head in a two-minute spell as on-loan Stoke City forward Joselu -- formerly of Madrid -- struck his first two Deportivo goals.Madrid were incensed that the referee didnt blow for a foul on Casemiro in the build-up to the equaliser before Carles Gil teed up Joselu to smash the ball in off the underside of the bar.Real were still rocking from that blow when they were caught cold by another Deportivo counter-attack and this time Joselu drilled the ball between the legs of Keylor Navas.High up in the VIP boxes of the Bernabeu, Ronaldo cut an increasingly frustrated figure at not being able to ride to the rescue of his teammates. In his absence, Mariano was handed a rare first-team opportunity off the bench and took his chance to shine with a looping header from Lucas Vazquezs cross that left Przemyslaw Tyton helpless. The Polish goalkeeper then suffered an injury when colliding with the post as he made a save in stoppage time. And Tyton had only just got back to his feet when Ramos powered another header into the net from Toni Krooss corner.
