Thousands leave Aleppo under rebel withdrawal deal

Posted:

ALEPPO (AFP) - Thousands of civilians and rebels left Aleppo on Thursday under an evacuation deal that will allow Syrias regime to take full control of the city after years of fighting. The withdrawal began a month to the day after Syrian government forces launched a major offensive to retake all of Aleppo, and will hand the regime its biggest victory in more than five years of civil war.In a video message to Syrians, President Bashar al-Assad said the liberation of Aleppo was history in the making. US Secretary of State John Kerry warned that tens of thousands of civilians were still trapped in Aleppo said action was needed to prevent a Srebrenica-style massacre.Three convoys left Aleppo carrying wounded civilians, fighters and their families, with mostly civilians leaving on buses and ambulances. Some 3,000 civilians and more than 40 wounded, including children, were brought out, the head of the International Committee for the Red Cross in Syria, Marianne Gasser, said after the first two convoys left.No one knows how many people are left in the east, and the evacuation could take days, she added. The evacuations were announced on Thursday, after an initial plan for civilians and fighters to leave rebel-held parts of the city collapsed the previous day amid renewed clashes. They began with a convoy of ambulances and buses crossing into a government-held district in southern Aleppo around 2:30 pm (1230 GMT).A Syrian military source told AFP that the first convoy carried mostly civilians as well as around 200 rebel fighters. The vehicles arrived just over an hour later in opposition territory about five kilometres (three miles) west of the city, and they were followed by two more convoys.UN envoy Staffan de Mistura told reporters in Paris Thursday that around 50,000 people were still trapped in.There are 50,000 people, including 40,000 civilians unfortunate enough to live in that part of the city. The rest are fighters, numbering between 1,500 and 5,000, and their families, he said.Gasser said there was firing before the Red Cross and Syrian Arab Red Crescent entered east Aleppo for the first evacuation. An AFP correspondent in the citys southern Al-Amiriyah district saw people piling on to green buses, filling seats and even sitting on the floor, with some worried there would not get another chance to leave. Many were in tears and some hesitated to board, afraid they would end up in the hands of regime forces. On the dusty window of one of the buses someone had written One day we will return.State television said at least 4,000 rebels and their families would be evacuated.A first evacuation attempt on Wednesday morning fell apart, with artillery exchanges and resumed air strikes rocking the city until the early hours of Thursday. But the agreement, brokered by Syrian regime ally Russia and opposition supporter Turkey, was revived following fresh talks. The defence ministry in Moscow said Syrian authorities had guaranteed the safety of the rebels leaving the city. The head of the UN-backed humanitarian taskforce for Syria, Jan Egeland, said in Geneva that most of those evacuated from Aleppo would head to opposition stronghold Idlib, in Syrias northwest.De Mistura however warned that Idlib will become the next Aleppo if a ceasefire and political agreement for Syria is not found. The UN Security Council will meet Friday to discuss the crisis in Aleppo in response to a request by France, which is calling for international observers to be sent to monitor the situation and ensure aid deliveries.Kerry told reporters Thursday that what had happened in Aleppo was already unconscionable. And the last thing anybody wants to see... is that that small area turns into another Srebrenica, he said, referring to a 1995 Bosnian war massacre.European Union leaders also tried to pile pressure on Russia Thursday, urging the Kremlin to protect civilians in Syria at a meeting in Brussels during which they heard from the mayor of eastern Aleppo.Russia meanwhile accused the rebels of having violated the ceasefire as violence erupted before Wednesdays planned evacuation while Turkey accused Assads regime and its allies of blocking people from leaving.Iran, another key Assad backer, was reported to have imposed new conditions on the agreement, including the evacuation of some civilians from two Shiite-majority villages in northwestern Syria under rebel siege. On Thursday, nearly 30 vehicles were headed to Fuaa and Kafraya to evacuate sick and wounded residents, the governor of neighbouring Hama province, Mohamed al-Hazouri, told state news agency SANA.A Syrian source on the ground told AFP that 1,200 injured and sick people and their families will be evacuated.Backed by foreign militia forces including fighters from Lebanons Shiite Hezbollah movement, the advance launched last month made rapid gains, leaving the rebels cornered in a tiny pocket of the territory they had controlled since 2012.More than 465 civilians died in east Aleppo during the assault and another 149 were killed by rebel rocket fire on government-held areas, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group.More than 310,000 people have been killed since the Syrian conflict began in 2011 with anti-government protests, and over half the population has been displaced, with millions becoming refugees.Diplomatic efforts -- including several rounds of peace talks in Geneva -- failed to make headway in resolving the conflict which saw a turning point last year when Russia launched an air war in support of Assad. With Aleppo out of rebel hands, the largest remaining rebel bastion is Idlib province, which is controlled by an alliance dominated by former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham Front.Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he discussed the situation in Aleppo Thursday with US and Russian counterparts Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin. After upping its involvement by brokering the Aleppo deal, Turkey said it would meet with Russia and Iran in Moscow on December 27 to discuss a political solution to the entire conflict.

Putin, Abe hold hot spring meet on WWII island row

Posted:

NAGATO (AFP) - Japan and Russia on Thursday hunkered down to try and make progress towards a peace treaty formally ending World War II hostilities hamstrung by a decades-old territorial dispute.Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is hosting President Vladimir Putin at a hot spring summit in his ancestral city of Nagato in the hopes of achieving a breakthrough. The Soviet Union seized islands off Japans northern coast in 1945 in the closing days of the war. Known as the Southern Kurils in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan, they have been a thorn in relations ever since. But Abe would like to seal a deal as soon as possible because the islands ageing Japanese former residents are dwindling in number.Abe said that he and Putin spoke for three hours on a range of issues, with about half of that centred on the peace treaty.I think we were able to carry out frank and very straight discussions, Abe told reporters, describing a good atmosphere for the summit.Putin, at the start of the talks, said he expected they would help improve relations.I think the summit today and tomorrow will bring a big contribution to the development of ties, he said.Putin, a practitioner of the Japanese martial art of judo, is making his first visit to Japan as president in 11 years and has said he wants to end the anachronism of the two countries not having a World War II peace treaty. But how to do this is a difficult question, he told Japanese media before his arrival, damping down expectations of major progress.Underscoring the intense interest in the meeting in Japan, Putins arrival at the airport in the city of Ube, about three hours later than originally anticipated, was shown live on television. The summit is the latest attempt to draw a line under World War II since Japan and the Soviet Union began discussions in 1956.Abes late father Shintaro took the lead in negotiations with Moscow as a foreign minister but died in 1991 after pushing for talks while suffering from cancer.Japan has been careful to avoid criticising Russia, particularly its role in Syria that has drawn condemnation by Western countries, as it seeks to resolve the territorial dispute. But in what appeared to be a gentle rebuke, Abe mentioned the importance of Russia playing a constructive role in international issues.Abe has looked to eke out concessions by dangling the prospect of major Japanese investment in front of Moscow, which is mired in economic crisis. He said they also discussed joint economic development of the islands and making it easier for Japanese former residents, whose average age is 81, to visit.I held talks, keeping in mind that the former islanders feel that they have no time to spare, Abe said, mentioning that he handed Putin letters from some of them. Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin advisor, told reporters that the two leaders called for experts to find ways to achieve joint exploitation of the territory, citing fishing, tourism, culture and medicine. But few believe Putin is likely to cave to Japanese demands to hand back at least some control over the islands, especially after Donald Trumps election as president of the United States last month. The New York real-estate baron has vowed to improve ties with Russia, where the economy has reeled under US sanctions against Moscow over Ukraine and the impact of falling oil prices.Abe and Putin will hold further talks in Tokyo on Friday.

NATO to hold talks with Russia Monday: Stoltenberg

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - NATO will hold a fresh round of formal talks with Russia on Monday to discuss European security and the Ukraine conflict, alliance head Jens Stoltenberg said.I have invited members of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) to a meeting on Monday at ambassadorial level at NATO headquarters to discuss topics of relevance to European security, notably Ukraine, Stoltenberg said as he went into an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday.Russian ambassador to NATO Alexander Grushko confirmed his attendance, saying Moscow hoped for an open discussion on matters of common concern, according to a RIA Novosti report. The NRC brings together ambassadors from the 28 NATO member countries and Russia, and met regularly until the Ukraine crisis plunged relations with Moscow into the deep freeze in 2014.In April this year, the council held its first meeting since June 2014 amid hopes the crisis might be easing but the talks instead broke up acrimoniously in what Stoltenberg called profound disagreements. Another round in July, just after NATO leaders endorsed its biggest military build-up since the end of the Cold War, also made no progress.Stoltenberg recalled that US-led NATO had suspended all practical cooperation with Russia over its role in Ukraine but stressed that political channels of communication had always remained open.He previously said that maintaining such contacts was crucial to avoiding any misunderstandings with Moscow at a time of increased international tensions.Stoltenberg gave no specific reason for convening the NRC on Monday but there has been growing speculation a meeting was on the cards, stoked by US president-elect Donald Trumps more conciliatory approach to Moscow.Russian officials were not immediately available for comment.

Football: Ronaldo hits 500th goal as Real reach world final

Posted:

YOKOHAMA (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 500th club goal Thursday as Real Madrid eased past Mexicos Club America 2-0 to reach the Club World Cup final in Japan. The Spanish giants will face shock finalists Kashima Antlers, the J-League champions, in Yokohama on Sunday as they look to capture their second world title in three years and fifth in total. Our sole aim was to reach the final -- so its job done, Real coach Zinedine Zidane told reporters after goals from Karim Benzema and Ronaldo extended his sides club record unbeaten run to 36 matches in all competitions. We didnt have a great rhythm in the first half, but in the second half we created more chances and Cristiano was able to kill the game off so Im very happy, added the Frenchman. It was a long flight to Japan and we have very few days to rest and prepare for the final, but we have come here to win this Club World Cup.His countryman Benzema said: It was a hard game against a tough team. The conditions were difficult too with the long journey weve had, but we played well and won the game -- now for the final. With Ronaldo firing blanks until scoring with virtually the last kick of the game, Benzema struck in first-half stoppage time, finishing clinically with the outside of his right boot after a deft pass from Toni Kroos.Ronaldo, who scooped his fourth Ballon dOr earlier this week, had already squandered a gilt-edged opportunity by heading against the post. The Portuguese superstar also saw two stinging efforts blocked by goalkeeper Moises Munoz but his dogged persistence paid off when he swept home from a tight angle deep into injury time.Confusion followed, however, when it appeared the goal could be ruled out using the video technology being trialled by FIFA in Japan.Ronaldos face turned to thunder as the Mexicans protested he had been offside -- until Paraguayan referee Enrique Caceres finally indicated that the goal stood. Its a new invention but to be honest I dont like it, said man of the match Luka Modric when asked about video replays. It causes confusion. I hope they dont continue with this system because for me it is not football.Zidane refused to criticise the technology, although his comments hardly amounted to a ringing endorsement either. If you ask my personal impression, it could cause problems, he said. But if its FIFA policy then we have to get used to it. We dont have the power to decide. Maybe it will help make things clear and transparent. The 31-year-old Ronaldo has hit a remarkable 377 goals in 366 games for Real with 118 more in 292 games for Manchester United and five in 31 for Sporting before that. Club America coach Ricardo La Volpe insisted his side had been unfortunate to lose.I think the luck was against, growled the firebrand Argentine.Real Madrid were not the better team. I told the players they can be proud of the way they fought, he added. It was a very tight game which we dominated for periods, but we were not aggressive enough. We just couldnt find the final ball.

BARCELONA (AFP) - Luis Suarez has agreed a new contract with Barcelona, keeping him at the Camp Nou until June 2021, the Spanish champions announced on Thursday. The 29-year-old Uruguay strikers new deal, which had been in the pipeline for some time, features a 200 million-euro (167 million pound, $208 million) release clause. Barcelona said Suarez, who has scored 97 goals in 116 appearances since signing from Liverpool in 2014, will officially pen the new deal on Friday. They know that I feel happy here and there was never going to be a problem extending my contract, said Suarez. And finally, its official. Its more than a gift for Barca, its a gift for me. Both the club and I wanted this to continue because its a good relationship.Any player would want to end their career at a club where they feel comfortable. Well have to see, but I will never lose either my ambition or my enthusiasm.Former Ajax striker Suarez helped Barca win a treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League in his first season at the Camp Nou and followed that up with a domestic double last season. He scored in the 3-1 win over Juventus in Berlin in the 2015 Champions League final.Suarezs remarkable goal tally of 59 goals in 53 matches last season, including 40 in La Liga, saw him win the European Golden Boot award for Europes top scorer.Suarezs new deal follows the announcement by Barcelona in October that Brazilian superstar Neymar had signed a new five-year deal also keeping him at the club until 2021 and featuring a 250 million-euro buyout clause.Barca coach Luis Enrique recently expressed confidence that Lionel Messi would tie his future to the club after opening talks to extend his contract beyond 2018.Various Spanish media sources reported last week that Messis father and agent, Jorge Horacio Messi, had arrived in Barcelona to begin negotiations on a new deal for the five-time World Player of the Year.Of course (I like the news), Enrique said. The day on which it is announced will be a great day for everyone to celebrate.Barca have also recently tied down Sergi Busquets and Javier Mascherano to contract extentions this year.La Ligas other star atractions have been busily putting pen to paper in recent weeks.Ballon dOr winner Cristiano Ronaldo signed a bumper new five-year contract with Real Madrid last month which will keep the Portuguese star at the European champions until he is 36.Teammates Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos also agreed lucrative renewals.Meanwhile, Suarez said Messi should have won another Ballon dOr on Monday.Everyone has their own criteria, he told the Barcelona website. But as far as Im concerned, Leo deserves to win it every year because of what he gives to football. Hes the best.

Butt seeks international return after twin hundreds

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Spot-fixing convict and former Pakistan captain Salman Butt pressed his case for a return to international cricket by scoring a century in each innings to help power his team to victory Thursday. The 32-year-old was playing in his first major first-class tournament after serving a five-year ban for spot-fixing, which ended in September last year.Butt scored 125 and 105 not out in the match for Water and Development Authority (WAPDA) against Habib Bank in the final of Quaid-e-Azam trophy. His second hundred helped his team draw the match with 198-3, after a target of 444 to win on the fifth day.WAPDA won the final on the basis of a first innings lead of 42, their maiden title in the 62-year history of the tournament.I have knocked the door (of international cricket) very hard and hope this will pave my way for return to (the) Pakistan team, Butt told reporters.I want to keep myself fit and keep my form alive. I am trying my best with the best of my intention. I have a wish and always want to be in every squad. I have the capacity but that is something the selectors have to tell and decide.Butt accumulated 741 runs with four hundreds in the ten matches of the tournament. This followed his 536 runs at an average of 107 in the National One-Day Cup earlier this year.Butt, along with team-mates Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif, were handed the bans after they were caught in a spot-fixing case on Pakistans tour of England in 2010.The trio was accused of arranging deliberate no-balls during the match, for which they were also jailed by a UK court.Pakistan fast-tracked Amirs return to international cricket after the International Cricket Council amended its code last year, allowing banned players to return to domestic cricket six months before their ban ends.Amir was selected for Pakistan in January this year.Pakistans chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq last month said Butt and Asif will only be considered after they feature in first-class matches.I hope the bad days are over, said Butt. I have gone through difficult times but my wife, my family and friends supported me.Pakistan is currently touring Australia for a three-Test and five one-day matches. After his performance Butt is likely to get selected for Pakistans tour of the West Indies in March-April next year where they will play four Tests, three one-day and two Twenty20 internationals.

England's Cook shrugs off captaincy criticism

Posted:

CHENNAI (AFP) - Englands Alastair Cook on Thursday shrugged off criticism of his captaincy ahead of the fifth and final Test against India in Chennai, saying one has to live and die by the decisions made. The tourists, who lost the series 3-0 trail after the fourth Test loss in Mumbai, started off with a strong performance in the first drawn Test in Rajkot but could not keep pace with top-ranked India.Cooks role as a leader has been brought into question after the three consecutive defeats but he insisted that it is all part of the job.You get judged on your results as a captain dont you? And when you lose games of cricket you are under fire, it happens to everyone, Cook said. When Virat (Kohli) loses games of cricket hell get criticised, when I lose games of cricket I get criticised. Thats part and parcel of the job.Look at Dylan Hartley the England rugby captain. He wins games of rugby and its all flying and obviously an incident last week (when he hit an opponent in the face) he gets criticised, added Cook.Cook admitted reading the pitch wrong in the Mohali Test and also regretted using just two spinners in Mumbai. When youre part of the leadership group you live and die by those decisions and when its going well everybody thinks youre brilliant and when youre doing badly everybody thinks youre terrible, he said.Cook insisted Englands effort could not be criticised as they search for a consolation win.Weve put everything into this tour. Ill have no regrets on the effort and clearly wed rather not be 3-0 down. One thing you cant fault us on is how hard weve fought as a side and Im proud of how weve stuck together, Cook told reporters.Cook, who has said that Joe Root is ready for the captains job, was again asked about his likely successor. The moment he got off the plane in India in 2012 as a very young-looking Joe Root you knew he was ready for international cricket - you knew.Everything you knew -- his mind, his game -- was ready. Every challenge thats been thrown at him hes handled. So I dont think anything over the next few years will faze him, said Cook.England and India had a light training session after two days of no practice as the ground staff at Chennais M.A. Chidambaram stadium worked overtime to ensure the pitch and the outfield are ready for Fridays start. The city is recovering from devastation caused by Cyclone Vardah that hit on Monday. This will be my 140th game and Ive never played in a game when we havent had nets before. But weve had a lot of cricket and sometimes you do have to remember what happened in the cyclone, when people unfortunately lost their lives. So a net session the day before doesnt seem quite as important after what people have gone through. Driving around you can see the devastation and its a real reminder of how lucky we are, said Cook.

Anderson out of India Test with 'soreness'

Posted:

CHENNAI (AFP) - England fast bowler James Anderson was ruled out of the fifth and final Test against India with body soreness on Thursday, dealing a blow to the tourists hopes of a consolation win.Anderson missed the first game, a draw in Rajkot, with shoulder injury, and he has taken only four wickets in the next three Tests as India stormed to three straight wins to clinch the series.Unfortunately Jimmy is ruled out. He picked up body soreness in the last game. So he is not going to be risked in this game, England skipper Alastair Cook told reporters in Chennai.Anderson, 34, made news during the fourth Test in Mumbai for his confrontation with Ravichandran Ashwin, the top-ranked Test bowler, after he questioned the batting technique of Indian captain Virat Kohli.Emotions threatened to boil over when Ashwin approached Anderson as he came out to bat during Englands second innings and then walked with him to the crease, forcing the umpire to intervene.Anderson is Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 467 scalps in 122 matches, and Cook said he still had a big role to play.I am very confident he can make a big contribution to English cricket over the next couple of years. I think we are going to have to manage him a bit more than we have managed him in Test matches, said Cook.England have had to deal with injuries to their first-choice bowlers right through the series with Stuart Broad hurting his foot during the second Test in Visakhapatnam. Broad is now racing against time to get fit for the final game in Chennai, where preparations were hit by the widespread damage caused by Cyclone Vardah on Monday.Obviously we will make a decision on Broady after this training session, said Cook.Of course we cant do a huge amount in terms of net stuff. But we do some fielding and run around to get ourselves going.Chris Woakes, Ben Stokes and Jake Ball are the other pace bowlers in the touring side. The ground staff at the MA Chidambaram Stadium have been working overtime to ensure the pitch and the outfield are ready for Fridays start.

Kohli urges India to 'leave mark on world cricket'

Posted:

CHENNAI (AFP) - Indias talismanic captain Virat Kohli on Thursday urged his in-form teammates to leave a mark on world cricket by going on to become one of the greatest sides ever.Kohlis India are bidding to extend their 17-game unbeaten run in the dead rubber fifth and final Test against England, which starts in the southern city of Chennai on Friday. The hosts, who have already clinched the series 3-0, will become the first Indian team to go 18 matches without a loss if they avoid defeat against Alastair Cooks struggling tourists.Kohli called on his players to build on recent successes and become a team that can be mentioned in the same breath as Don Bradmans Australian Invincibles and the legendary West Indies side of the 1980s.We still understand we got to play a lot of cricket everywhere in the world. Its not only about this one period we are going through, the 28-year-old told reporters. As I said its an ongoing process which needs to be sustained for the next five, seven or eight years for us to become a top quality side and leave a mark on world cricket -- maybe known as one of the best teams to have assembled on the field, Kohli added. The batsman, who is in the form of his life after striking his third double century of the year, has already become the first Indian captain to win five successive series, including a 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand in October.India sit comfortably at the top of the world rankings but Kohli insisted his side were taking nothing for granted going into the Chennai Test.We dont feel invincible to be honest, we respect every opposition, we admit every time we are put under pressure, and we know teams are going to put us under pressure, he said. Kohli leads the series batting chart with 640 runs, way ahead of England batsman Joe Root, who has 397 for the four matches.England skipper Cook said after the huge innings and 36-run loss in the third Test in Mumbai that Root was ready to succeed him as captain, without saying when he would eventually step down.Kohli agrees that Root has what it takes to move up from his role of vice-captain.Joe is an outstanding player... he is very positive, always thinks of any situation as an opportunity... I dont know what captaincy would do to that, Kohli told a press conference. Whatever I have seen of him as a player and the way he conducts himself on the field, I think he has been a great batsman for England and he is equipped well enough to handle it (being captain).
