Football: Captain Iborra hat-trick cements Sevilla in third

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Sevilla strengthened their grip on third in La Liga thanks to captain Vicente Iborras hat-trick in a 3-0 win at Celta Vigo on Sunday.Iborra was only brought on as a substitute at half-time by coach Jorge Sampaoli after his exertions as Sevilla booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 0-0 draw at Lyon in midweek. However, he made an instant impact by heading home the opener from Pablo Sarabias corner on 51 minutes. The midfielder then broke clear to seal the three points six minutes from time before adding a stoppage-time penalty to round off the first hat-trick of his career.Victory puts Sevilla five points clear of fifth-placed Atletico Madrid, who travel to Villarreal on Monday night, and four clear of Real Sociedad in fourth.Sevilla are just a point behind Barcelona and seven adrift of league leaders Real Madrid after they were victorious against Osasuna and Deportivo la Coruna respectively on Saturday.Espanyol will carry a nine-game unbeaten run in La Liga into their meeting with Barca in the Catalan derby next weekend after a 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon lifted them up to ninth.Just two points separate sixth from 12th as Athletic Bilbao missed a chance to move into the top four with a 1-0 defeat at Real Betis thanks to Ruben Castros early winner.Basque rivals Eibar and Alaves remain locked in mid-table after a 0-0 at Ipurua stadium.

Cavani double saves PSG against Nice

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - A second-half brace from Edinson Cavani saw champions Paris Saint Germain come from two down to earn a 2-2 draw with Ligue 1 leaders Nice at the Parc des Princes on Sunday. The visitors withstood an early onslaught to go into the break 2-0 up after a sumptuous free-kick from Wylan Cyprien on 32 minutes and a slick left-foot shot from Alassane Plea right on the break. The result puts Nice on 40 points from 17 games, one clear of second placed Monaco, who beat Bordeaux 4-0 on Saturday and four clear of under-pressure Unai Emerys champions.Nice coach Lucien Favre looked relieved with the point after Cavani had finished from close range on 46 minutes and then on the hour mark before the champions ripped into the Ligue 1 leaders all the way to the final whistle. We really suffered out there, they imposed a terrible rhythm early on and it was difficult for us, but then came that extraordinary goal, Favre said after the game.Cavani had the ball in the back of the net again with 15 minutes to go but Blaise Matuidi was offside when receiving the ball to provide the final pass. The PSG front lines assault saw Nice keeper Yoan Cardinale produce seven saves, the last a brilliant stop on the line from a Layvin Kurzawa header in stoppage time. But earlier Cavani was in the right place at the right time to prod home the equaliser after Cardinale had punched away a cross right into his captain Dante and the Uruguayan pounced on the loose ball. The opening goal came when Cyprien whipped a ferocious free-kick round the PSG wall into the top right hand corner against the run of play. And then, just before the break, Plea beat both Thiago Silva and Marquinhos at the edge of the PSG area to dispatch a deft left-foot shot that saw the home side booed off at the break. In the second half, Paris concentrated on the flanks and the two Cavani goals, which took his league taly to 16 so far, came from wide crosses from Serge Aurier and Kurzawa.Mario Balotelli came on as a late substitute and quickly produced a snap shot that PSG keeper Alphons Areola saved well. Hatem Ben Arfa, who switched to PSG from Nice in the summer, also made a late cameo.Cyprien said after the game his side had never expected to be top at this stage. That match taught us something we didnt know about ourselves. It keeps us top and we can do even better, the striker said.PSG players refused to speak to reporters after the game having decided to impose a media blackout. On Saturday, second-placed Monaco impressed as Radamel Falcao netted a hat-trick in the 4-0 crushing of 10-man Bordeaux.Earlier Sunday a goal from Romain Hamouma and a series of saves from Stphane Ruffier saw Saint-Etienne beat Guingamp 1-0 at home to climb to eighth after qualifying for the Europa League last-32 in midweek. After a tiring Champions League game with Sevilla in midweek, Lyon held firm for a 1-0 home win over Rennes thanks to a first-half goal from Mathieu Valbuena which sees them sit fourth. Were not playing well but the points are there, two more than at this time last season, said Lyon coach Bruno GenesioGoalkeeper Anthony Lopes, however, was their man of the match with five notable saves.

Football: Mkhitaryan tames Spurs to stop Man Utd rot

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester United but was later stretchered off as Jose Mourinhos side claimed a timely 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.Mkhitaryan converted Ander Herreras through ball just before the half hour to end a frustrating run of four successive home draws and give United just a second win in nine league matches. It was his second goal in two games, after he opened his account for the club against Zorya Luhansk on Thursday, but he exited on a stretcher after turning his ankle in a late challenge by Danny Rose.United remain 13 points below leaders Chelsea, but closed to within three points of fifth-place Spurs and six off Manchester City, who occupy the fourth and final Champions League berth.United once again failed to convert their dominance into goals, but unlike in their recent 1-1 draws against Arsenal, West Ham United and Everton, they were not made to pay.Initially kept on the sidelines by Mourinho following his arrival from Borussia Dortmund, Mkhitaryan has become something of a lucky charm for the Portuguese, who will hope his injury is not too serious.Defeat curbed Spurs recent revival, which had seen them beat Swansea City 5-0 and secure a Europa League place with a 3-1 win over CSKA Moscow.Mauricio Pochettinos side remain without an away league win since September 24.Tottenham centre-back Toby Alderweireld made his first start in eight weeks after a knee injury and he and his defensive colleagues quickly found themselves under examination. It took United less than two minutes to carve Spurs open, Zlatan Ibrahimovic teeing up Paul Pogba for a left-foot shot that was parried by his France team-mate Hugo Lloris.Mkhitaryan saw an effort blocked by Jan Vertonghen, Herrera gave Lloris some catching practice with a dipping volley and Michael Carrick whistled a shot over from range.United goalkeeper David de Gea had to deal with a zippy free-kick from Christian Eriksen, but the hosts looked the more likely scorers and duly went ahead in the 29th minute.Harry Kane played the ball straight to Herrera, whose inviting pass between the Spurs centre-backs freed Armenian playmaker Mkhitaryan to run through and smash a rising shot past Lloris. The Spurs goalkeeper was called into action again shortly after, dropping to his right and saving from Ibrahimovic after Antonio Valencias cross found its way to the back post.At the other end, Son Heung-Min cut in from the right and let fly with a left-foot effort that de Gea had to tip over, but the spring was in Uniteds step as the teams went off at half-time.Their failure to take their chances left them vulnerable to the threat of a counter-punch, however, and there were nervous moments early in the second half as Tottenham went on the attack.De Gea boxed away a shot from Eriksen before Victor Wanyama gave the hosts a big let-off, completely miscuing his header after Eriksens free-kick found him unmarked six yards from goal.Seeking to soothe the home fans frayed nerves, Pogba took it upon himself to try to extend Uniteds lead. The France midfielder left the Spurs crossbar shuddering with an arcing 25-yard free-kick and then stung Lloriss palms with a crisp shot following a one-two with Herrera.De Gea had to claw away another Eriksen free-kick, but despite Mkhitaryans premature 84th-minute exit, United saw the game out.

He had earlier said winning the $2 million Hong Kong Open would mean the world to him -- and his fellow Australian golfers including Scott Hend mobbed him on the final green to douse him in champagne.Cabrera Bello had to settle for second place, finishing with a round of 268, just one behind Brazels 267.Australias Andrew Dodt and Englands Tommy Fleetwood were tied on an 11 under 269.

Boxing: Joshua 'excited' by Klitschko fight at Wembley

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Anthony Joshua says the size of the occasion will not get to him when he takes on Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley on April 29 in the biggest fight in British boxing history. The Briton quickly disposed of American Eric Molina in a third round stoppage win on Saturday and his next title defence against Klitschko was then immediately announced from the ring.Joshua, 27, made a second defence of his IBF world heavyweight title against Molina, who he floored in the third round with a crunching right to the jaw before forcing the stoppage after the American got up from a count. The WBA version of the world title is also expected to be on the line against Ukrainian Klitschko, who ruled for nine-and-a-half years until losing the IBF, WBA and WBO belts on points to Briton Tyson Fury a year ago. Promoter Eddie Hearn hopes a record-breaking 90,000 fans will be inside Wembley to see the fight, and Joshua - the 2012 Olympic gold medallist - said: Thats definitely one to get excited for.I just wanted to focus on this fight with Molina but to see Klitschko here tonight makes it real, he told a post fight press conference. It doesnt matter whether its 90,000 or nine people, its the same regulations and rules and its to win. Im going to box Klitschko for 12 rounds, make him miss and make him pay, and if the knockout comes I will be able to say I did something no one else did. But Im not going in there to say Im going to knock Klitschko out in two rounds. It is the perfect time for me to move up another step and contest my heavyweight championship belt against one of the legends of our sport. Joshuas sixth professional fight - all 83 seconds of it - took place at Wembley Stadium on the undercard of Carl Froch-George Groves, but most of the 80,000 had not arrived by the time he was in action early in the evening. The rematch between Froch and Groves attracted Britains biggest attendance for a boxing event since the Second World War but Hearn hopes Joshua-Klitschko sets a new record. They will meet on Wednesday to publicise the event and Hearn hopes to extend the capacity. Were looking to go to 90,000, we need to speak to the mayor of London Mr (Sadiq) Khan about transport around the venue, Hearn told reporters.Every time he (Joshua) fights he could do 30,000 so Im confident we will do that lot. They are at different stages of their careers: the hottest prospect in boxing against a legend. Its the biggest fight in British boxing history.Joshua, who sparred with Klitschko early in his professional career, does not see beating Klitschko as being the defining moment of his career after registering his 18th consecutive knockout from as many professional fights. Its just another fight, man. You cant build yourself up and get carried away. If I beat Klitschko, they will say youve got to beat David Haye now, or Luis Ortiz, Joshua said.In order to beat Klitschko I need to go to another level.Klitschko, who will be 41 in March, has more experience of the big stage and despite his age and inactivity - he will have been out of the ring 17 months - Joshua says he is still dangerous. Ive fought no one like Klitschko, thats what makes it interesting, said Joshua. Hes a sharp opponent for sure. Look at Bernard Hopkins, hes 52 next month and hes fighting next weekend, so you cant write him off. Thats what good living and lifestyle can do for you.Its risk versus reward. People wouldnt call my name out if there was as much money on the table as there is. Theres money and titles on the line. All he has to do is get in the ring and hes hit the jackpot, one way or another. I dont think he needs the dough but everyone needs an extra few quid. How long is he going to be around for? This is his last hurrah.
