Pakistan face big task to win in Australia

Posted:

BRISBANE (AFP) - Pace spearhead Mitchell Starc says Australia plan to inflict a psychological blow on vulnerable Pakistan in Thursdays day-night first Test in Brisbane to set up their three-match series. The left-armer said Australia, who lost Test series against Sri Lanka and South Africa recently, sense an opportunity to strike with Pakistan struggling for form away from home. The visitors have never won in 11 series in Australia, dropping their last three series here 3-0 and losing their previous nine Tests Down Under since 1999.Their recent form in New Zealand on the way to Brisbane does not engender confidence that things will be any different. They were defeated there by hefty margins in both Tests, including an ignominious collapse of nine wickets in the final session of the second Test in Hamilton.Starc is confident Steve Smiths new-look team, who halted a run of five Test defeats in the third Test against South Africa last month, can press their home advantage at the Gabba where Australia have not lost in 27 Tests stretching back to 1988. Pakistan have never won in four Brisbane Tests.Theyve struggled in New Zealand and probably struggle a little more away from home -- theyre really comfortable in the UAE (where Pakistan play their home Tests), Starc said.So its a good opportunity for us in this Test match to assert our dominance first up, make an impression in the first Test of the series, which goes a long way to working out the final result. There is added spice to the series with South African Mickey Arthur now in charge of Pakistan three years after he was sacked as Australia coach and replaced by Darren Lehmann.Arthur, who still lives in Perth, faces the huge challenge of not only ending Pakistans drought in Australia but becoming the first team from the sub-continent to win a Test series here.He has past form when it comes to plotting series upsets in Australia. In 2008-09 he coached South Africa to a 2-1 victory -- the first time any touring team had won a campaign in Australia since the mighty West Indies 16 years earlier. For these guys to come here and win would be amazing, Arthur said. But we are under no illusions. Australia are a fantastic cricket team and, in these conditions, its going to be very tough for us.Pakistans big hopes rest with their pace attack led by Wahab Riaz and Mohammad Amir, who is back playing Test cricket after a five-year ban following a spot-fixing controversy in 2010.Hes got great skills, everyone in world cricket knows that, Starc said of Amir.He bowls at good pace, swings the ball, hes got a fast-arm action and knows his game really well for a young bowler. So hes one of the guys theyre going to rely on to get that ball swinging around and trying to get wickets early and throughout an innings.Leg-spinner Yasir Shah, who has taken 116 wickets in 20 Tests, injured his back in a pre-Test warm-up game and faces a fitness Test. The clash will be Australias third pink-ball Test, but the first under the Brisbane lights, having beaten New Zealand and South Africa in Adelaide. Pakistan downed the West Indies in their only day-night Test in Dubai in October.Pakistan briefly held the top Test ranking this year but come into the match in fourth, while Australia are third behind top-ranked India.Pakistan (squad): Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Azhar Ali, Sami Aslam, Sharjeel Khan, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Sarfraz Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, Yasir Shah, Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Amir, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Sohail Khan, Imran Khan.Australia (squad): David Warner, Matt Renshaw, Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith (capt), Peter Handscomb, Nic Maddinson, Matthew Wade, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Jackson Bird, Chadd Sayers.Umpires: Ian Gould (ENG) and Richard Illingworth (ENG).Third umpire: Sundaram Ravi (IND).Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI).

Mourinho keeps Rooney guessing over Palace clash

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho has warned Wayne Rooney he cannot be sure of being involved in Manchester Uniteds clash with Crystal Palace on Wednesday despite Henrikh Mkhitaryans injury. The United and England captain has been relegated to the bench by both this season and has started just one league game since being left out against Leicester at the end of September.Rooney is one goal short of the 249 career United goals scored by the legendary Bobby Charlton, but with just three goals this season, and only one in the league, the striker might have to wait a while longer to make history. And although an injury to Mkhitaryan in Sundays win against Tottenham will keep the Armenian forward out of Uniteds next two games, Mourinho insists Rooney, 31, is just one of five players battling to start at Selhurst Park.I knew that was coming, joked Mourinho when asked if Rooney would start.Rooney, (Marcus) Rashford, (Jesse) Lingard, Ashley Young, Memphis Depay -- thats a position where we have lots of players so that will not be another problem, to choose a player to play. The problem is Mkhitaryan was playing so, so well and now hes not there.Mourinho paid tribute to his central defensive pairing of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, two players whose United careers have been blighted by injuries and inconsistent form. With that duo impressing and Eric Bailly returning to full fitness, Mourinho is confident about his defensive options.I am surprised with Phil because even with me he had this injury which stopped him for a long time, said Mourinho. Now he looks fresh and looks sharp and fast. I think he had a big evolution and I think he played already six matches. Six matches, Phil Jones? I dont remember when he did that.A little bit like Marcos because Marcos also had lots of problems with injuries and he also looks free of it.In a period without Bailly and (Chris) Smalling, when people could be scared, they stepped up and both played so many matches already -- six without defeat, I think -- playing well and solid so Im really happy for that. There will be one enforced change in Uniteds defence at Palace as right-back Antonio Valencia is suspended. That could mean Matteo Darmian moving to right-back and Daley Blind stepping in on the left. For struggling Palace winger Wilfried Zaha will face his former club convinced he is now proving his critics wrong.Zaha returned to Selhurst Park after an unsuccessful stint at Old Trafford two years ago and his form this season has prompted Eagles manager Alan Pardew to bemoan the fact Zaha may be lost to England if the player takes up an offer to play for Ivory Coast. The 24-year-old made the second of his two friendly appearances for England three years ago but has since been overlooked and is still eligible to change the country he represents. He sparkled in Palaces 3-3 draw at Hull on Saturday when he scored, won a penalty and provided an assist. Before I was known as the Wilf that just does tricks, Zaha said.On Saturday I managed to add a shot at the end and it was on target as well I am happy with my progress.Everyone talks about my stats so I am just trying to give them a reason not to talk. I just do what I need to do on the pitch and see who laughs last.

Finished recount confirms Trump's victory in Wisconsin

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - Twelve days and almost three million ballots later, Republican Donald Trump is still the winner of the presidential election in Wisconsin, state officials said Monday following a recount.President-elect Trump won the Midwestern state by more than 22,000 votes in November, a margin that increased by 162 votes following the recount, according to preliminary statewide totals announced by Wisconsins election commission.Third-party candidate Jill Stein of the Green Party -- who received about one percent of the vote -- had spearheaded efforts to force recounts in Wisconsin as well as in Michigan and Pennsylvania. The three states were crucial to Trumps victory in the presidential contest.Wisconsin -- a swing state that had voted Democratic in the past several presidential elections prior to 2016 -- started recounting its election ballots on December 1 to meet the Tuesday deadline for certifying the vote.Courts blocked recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania.Fundraising efforts collected more than $7 million to pay for the recounts, which Stein said were necessary to address voting system cybersecurity issues as well as concerns over potential hacking. The Wisconsin recount was never about changing the outcome; it was about validating the vote and restoring confidence in our voting system to Americans across the country who have doubt, said in a statement. The recount in Wisconsin raised a number of important election integrity issues that bear further assessment and serious action to ensure we have integrity and confidence in our electoral system. On Monday a federal judge rejected Steins initiative to secure an election recount in Pennsylvania.Trumps lawyers had filed suit there seeking to deny Steins request.Recount efforts were also thwarted in Michigan after another federal judge halted that drive, citing a lack of evidence that election fraud or errors had occurred.Stein has criticized the opposition from the Trump campaign and his supporters, and said in Michigan a partial recount revealed numerous red flags.

First day-night Ashes Test set for Adelaide

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia will host England at the Adelaide Oval in the first day-night Ashes Test during the 2017-18 series, building on the success of the concept, Cricket Australia announced Tuesday. The series between the arch-rivals opens at the Gabba in Brisbane from November 23 before heading to Adelaide then Perth. Melbourne hosts the traditional Boxing Day Test with Sydney rounding it off.England will also play five one-day internationals between January 14-28.Adelaide hosted the first-ever Test under lights using a pink ball last year and it was a roaring success, with record attendances for the clash against New Zealand. Buoyed by the public reaction, the same venue was used for a day-night Test against South Africa last month, while Australia face Pakistan under lights in the first Test at Brisbane this week. Were really excited to announce that Adelaide will play host to the first ever day-night Ashes Test, said Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland. We know how much Adelaide fans love this style of Test cricket. Were expecting a full house next year in what is sure to be a great contest. While the Gabba has long been the first Test on the Australian summer calendar, it lost that right to Perth this year. Sutherland said Perth had been pushed back to mid-December for the Ashes to give it more time to complete construction of the new 60,000-seat Perth Stadium. He added that given the slightly later-than-usual start to the series, the schedule allowed for at least three Sheffield Shield matches to be played before the Brisbane opener as preparation. A lack of Sheffield Shield cricket was one of the reasons blamed for Australia suffering a run of five heavy Test defeats this year, before a new-look side ended the slump by beating South Africa last month.Schedule for the 2017-18 Ashes series:First Test - November 23-27 at the Gabba in BrisbaneSecond Test - December 2-6, Adelaide Oval (day-night)Third Test - December 14-18, Perth (venue TBC)Fourth Test - December 26-30, Melbourne Cricket GroundFifth Test - January 4-8, Sydney Cricket Ground.Australia v England one-day series (2018).First ODI - January 14, Melbourne Cricket Ground. Second ODI - January 19, the Gabba in Brisbane.Third ODI - January 21, Sydney Cricket Ground.Fourth ODI - January 26, Adelaide Oval.Fifth ODI - January 28, Perth (venue TBC).

Football: Nainggolan fires Roma past AC Milan

Posted:

MILAN, Dec 12, 2016 (AFP) - Radja Nainggolan hit a second-half scorcher to secure a 1-0 win over AC Milan, who saw MBaye Niang miss a first-half penalty, to close to within four points of leaders Juventus on Monday.Roma and Milan had both dropped to seven points behind Juventus after Gonzalo Higuain scored twice on Sunday to seal a precious 2-1 derby win at Torino.AC Milan coach Vincenzo Montella was welcomed back to the stadium where he played many memorable games as a forward for the Giallorossi, when he celebrated goals doing the Aeroplanino (Little Airplane). But it was Luciano Spallettis hosts who were left celebrating following an entertaining clash at the Stadio Olimpico, Nainggolan beating Milans teenaged keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 62nd minute to make it three wins in succession.Roma remain second, four points off the lead with Milan seven adrift in third, with a one-point lead on both Napoli and Lazio.Edin Dzeko, looking to stretch the league-leading tally of 12 goals he shares with Inters Mauro Icardi, set the tone with a second-minute strike that forced Donnarumma down low at his near post.Milan hit back but Gianluca Lapadula couldnt reach Susos through ball assist. After just 20 minutes Lapadula earned Milans chance when he tempted Wojciech Szczesny into a rash tackle. But when Niang stepped up to take it, fans had reason for concern.Last week the Frenchman was involved in an on-field spat with Lapadula after his fellow forward had won a penalty at Crotone. Niang won the argument, but missed the penalty and it was thanks to Lapadulas late winner that Milan took the points from a 2-1 win. This time these was no spat, but Niangs tame shot was well covered by Szczesny, who dived to his left to parry it to safety.Roma took the initiative, Dzeko firing an angled drive inches past Donnarummas post, but Spalletti was left concerned when Bruno Peres was stretchered off in tears to be replaced by former Milan star Stephan El Shaarawy.Milan resumed in far more positive fashion after the break, but Mario Pasalic was off target from Andrea Bertolaccis delivery. And after Diego Perotti blasted over from a corner at the other end, Milan were stunned when Nainggolan cut in from the right to unleash a left-foot drive from outside the area that left Donnarumma clutching at thin air.Roma could have doubled their lead but Donnarumma did well to stop Dzekos drive at the near post after the Bosnian robbed Gabriel Paletta, while at the other end Mati Fernandez failed to trouble Szczesny with a shot at the neat post.Earlier, Croatia striker Nikola Kalinic struck a stunning first-half brace as Fiorentina held off a spirited fightback from Sassuolo to prevail 2-1 and move up to seventh.La Viola settled quickly at their Artemio Franchi stadium and after Josip Ilicic curled an early free kick inches past the top corner, they had a 10th minute lead.Ilicic was involved again with another free kick, but after it hit the wall to bounce up into the air Kalinic stole the glory with a spectacular volley to beat Andrea Consigli in the Sassuolo net.Remarkably, it was Kalinics first goal at home since against Juventus last April, the Croatian scoring all six of his previous goals this term away.Five minutes before the interval, Kalinic produced another sparkler, the striker meeting Federico Chiesas low cross with a cheeky back-heel flick from the edge of the box that bounced in off the inside of the upright.Sassuolo reduced arrears three minutes later, Acerbi firing home from a crowded area as the hosts failed to deal with a corner on 75 minutes.

Football: Arsenal get Bayern again, Barcelona return to Paris

Posted:

NYON (AFP) - Arsenal were once again drawn against Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League on Monday, while Barcelona will also come up against familiar foes in the shape of Paris Saint-Germain.Arsene Wengers side had hoped winning their group for the first time in five years would spare them a tie against one of the continents giants in the first knockout round. But instead they must face Carlo Ancelottis German champions, who came second in their section, with the first leg in Bavaria.Bayern eliminated Arsenal en route to winning the trophy in 2012/13 and repeated the feat a year later, while the teams also met in the group stage last season -- the Gunners won 2-0 in London but lost 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. Its an interesting and difficult draw. We know Arsenal from the last few years when we often played against them, twice already in the last 16, when we had a good experience and got through, said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.Arsenal are a strong team and I rate them as stronger at the moment than in the last few years.PSG came second to Arsenal in Group A, leaving them more vulnerable to a tough draw and five-time winners Barcelona have eliminated the French club in the quarter-finals in two of the past four seasons, while the teams also met in the group stage in 2014/15.If I could have chosen another team, I would have done, admitted Paris director of football Patrick Kluivert, a former Barcelona striker.Barcelona vice president Jordi Mestre told beIN Sports Spain: There is no guarantee but it does give you a certain confidence to have beaten them before. Every game is different and we will see what happens.Reigning European champions Real Madrid will face Napoli as they look to win the trophy for a record 12th time, while Pep Guardiolas Manchester City face a testing two-legged encounter against Monaco.City, currently struggling for form, cannot afford to take the principality side lightly -- they are the most prolific side in Europes leading leagues this season and have beaten Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League in the past two years. We are happy to be here, and then we have avoided Real Madrid and Barcelona, Citys director of football Txiki Begiristain told BT Sport.Monaco are playing probably the best football in France now. In a group with Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen they were top and they have young players and a lot of talent.Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim said: Manchester City are looking to win the Champions League. We are not the favourites but we believe in our qualities.Premier League champions Leicester City will take on last seasons Europa League winners Sevilla as a reward for topping their group in their debut appearance in the competition, with a visit to the Sanchez Pizjuan in the first leg.Leicesters European form -- an English record 5-0 defeat at Porto last week apart -- has provided a welcome tonic amid a poor defence of their domestic title but manager Claudio Ranieri insisted his team remained the underdogs.Whoever we played would have been a tough opponent, but I think all the teams who arrived second will have wanted to play against us and I know that we will be the underdogs once again. Always we are underdogs, every time, he told the clubs website.Atletico Madrid, runners up to city rivals Real in two of the last three seasons, were drawn against Germanys Bayer Leverkusen in a repeat of their clash at the same stage in 2014/15. On that occasion, Atletico emerged victorious after a tense penalty shoot-out.Two-time winners Juventus were drawn against FC Porto, while Borussia Dortmund also face Portuguese opposition in the shape of Benfica. The first legs will be played on February 14, 15, 21 and 22 with the second legs on March 7, 8, 14 and 15.

Boxing: Joshua can stun Klitschko, says trainer

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Anthony Joshua can stun Wladimir Klitschko to become the undisputed world heavyweight champion, according to the British fighters trainer Rob McCracken.Former Olympic gold medallist Joshua linked up with McCracken on a full-time basis before beating Eric Molina in a second successful defence of his IBF heavyweight title on Saturday.McCracken looked on as Joshua stopped Molina within three rounds at Manchester Arena, with promoter Eddie Hearn swiftly announcing a deal had been struck for the Briton and Klitschko to meet in a unification showdown at Wembley Stadium on April 29.Convinced Joshua, 27, can topple giant Ukrainian Klitschko, who will be 41 by the time the fight takes place, McCracken told BBC Radio Five Live: Klitschkos beaten big punchers before, but I think Anthonys more than a big puncher.Anthony can box, can move well, has great balance. Speed is the key as well - when you have his speed, they dont see the punches coming. And that will be the plan for Klitschko, that Klitschko just cant avoid or defend whats coming from Anthony.Without a doubt he can knock anybody out. If he hits them hard enough, he will without a doubt knock them out. Hes looking forward to it. Hes enjoying his boxing. The tests lie ahead but hes in a great place and were more than confident that hell beat Klitschko. My gut feeling and my experience tells me hes the real deal and I think hes more than capable of becoming undisputed heavyweight champion.

Pogbas to clash as Man Utd draw Saint-Etienne in Europa League

Posted:

NYON, Switzerland (AFP) - Manchester United will take on Saint-Etienne in the last 32 of the Europa League, with Jose Mourinhos side hosting the French club in the first leg, after Mondays draw. The tie will see United and France midfielder Paul Pogba, the worlds most expensive player, come up against his elder brother Florentin, the Guinea international defender.Thats a nice thing, said Mourinho at a press conference on Monday. Paul was already laughing about it and for sure his brother is also laughing. It has happened a few times in the history football and its a nice thing. The teams met in the now defunct Cup Winners Cup first round in 1977, with United winning 3-1 on aggregate. On that occasion, United were forced to host the second leg in the southern English city of Plymouth, 450 kilometres away, following crowd trouble in the first leg in France.Mourinhos men finished second in Group A behind Fenerbahce of Turkey while Saint-Etienne topped Group C. After also having to go to Ukraine to face Zorya Luhansk in the group stage, Uniteds Portuguese manager is pleased that there will be no long away trip this time. The good thing is the travel distance. We were very unlucky in the group phase, we had to go very far, it was very difficult to go to Turkey, Ukraine, he said. Now we go to France because the flight is easy and its not an easy period, there are lots of games, so that is good.Saint-Etienne, 10-time French champions and European Cup runners-up in 1976, are currently eighth in Ligue 1.Saint-Etienne is an historic old club with lots of tradition. People of my generation will never forget that (Michel) Platini team and it will be difficult because every team now is a good team in the competition. For sure, Manchester United is one of the big names in the competition but we have two months without the Europa League, two months to forget it, then we will see.The other Premier League representative, Tottenham Hotspur, will face Gent of Belgium after being eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage.Villarreal of Spain will face Italian giants Roma in one of the standout ties, while Bundesliga club Borussia Moenchengladbach were drawn against Fiorentina of Italy. The first legs will be played on Thursday, February 16, with the return matches a week later.

EU eyes Brexit talks 'as quickly as possible: summit draft

Posted:

BRUSSELS (AFP) - EU leaders will agree at a summit this week to launch Brexit talks as quickly as possible after Britain triggers its divorce, European sources said Monday. The 27 leaders meeting without British Prime Minister Theresa May at dinner on Thursday will issue a statement setting out key principles of the negotiations, one source told AFP on condition of anonymity. The leaders will say they are ready to negotiate as soon as May triggers Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets a two-year clock running until Britains exit from the bloc, the source quoted the text as saying, which is still in draft form.May -- who will attend the first part of the EU summit but then leave before dinner -- has promised to start the divorce by the end of March 2017.The 27 states will agree that they should then adopt the negotiating lines that will govern the talks with Britain -- something neither side has set out in detail yet, the source said. They will also reaffirm their commitment to their statement immediately after Britains shock referendum vote to leave, in which they said Britain could not expect access to the EUs single market without keeping freedom of movement for EU citizens. Finally, the EU leaders will seek a decision authorising the opening of negotiations as quickly as possible after setting out their negotiating lines, the source said. The European Commissions chief Brexit negotiator, former French minister Michel Barnier, will be in the front line, in coordination with the member states for the duration of the talks, the source said.Barnier warned Britain last week that it had only about 18 months for negotiations that should be wrapped up by October 2018, in time for the European and British parliaments to approve the deal by March 2019.The leaders will hold a summit around six weeks after Britain triggers Article 50 to set the negotiating lines, another European source said, although that timeline may have to be adapted to fit in with the second round of Frances presidential elections due in May 2017.
