Obama says no evidence Orlando attack was 'directed' from abroad

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - President Barack Obama said Monday there was no evidence that the massacre of 49 people in a Florida nightclub was directed from abroad or was part of a larger plot. After being briefed on Americas deadliest mass shooting in modern times by top security aides, Obama said we dont yet know the shooters motivations.Obama said 29-year-old Omar Mateen did appear to have been inspired by various extremist information that was disseminated over the Internet. At this stage we see no clear evidence that he was directed externally, Obama said. It does appear that at the last minute he announced allegiance to ISIL, but there is no evidence so far that he was in fact directed by them, he said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.Theres also no direct evidence that he was part of a larger plot. The White House said Obama will travel Thursday to Orlando to pay his respects to victims families, and to stand in solidarity with the community as they embark on their recovery.Obama has branded the shooting as a horrific massacre resulting from terror and hate.IS claimed responsibility for the massacre, saying in a radio bulletin that it was carried out by one of the soldiers of the caliphate.Inside the United States the political repercussions of the shooting have been swift, with liberals and conservatives clamoring to use it to justify either tougher gun control or tougher counterterrorism measures.Amid the bickering, Obama urged unity. Were also looking at all the motivations of the killer, but its a reminder that regardless of race, religion, faith or sexual orientation, were all Americans. We need to be looking after each other and protecting each other at all times in the face of this kind of terrible act.

28 dead in IS counter-attack on Syria regime forces: monitor

Posted:

BEIRUT (AFP) - An Islamic State group counter-attack on Syrian regime forces advancing towards a jihadist stronghold on Monday left 28 combatants dead, a monitor said.Dozens of IS fighters early on Monday attacked government positions south of the town of Tabqa, an IS stronghold on the Euphrates River, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said fierce clashes broke out, but that regime forces were able to maintain their positions and were still 15 kilometres (10 miles) from the IS-held Tabqa airport.Eleven regime fighters and 17 Daesh fighters were killed in the attack, said Abdel Rahman, using the Arabic acronym for IS.Earlier this month, government fighters backed by Russian air power began pushing north towards Tabqa, held by IS since 2014.The town lies some 50 kilometres (31 miles) east of the jihadist groups Syrian de facto capital of Raqa city, and recapturing it would sever the supply road from the west. Last week, IS fighters had sent reinforcements of fighters and weapons into Tabqa in anticipation of a fierce battle to defend the town. Abdel Rahman said a total of 37 government fighters and 101 IS militants have been killed since the regime launched its offensive for Tabqa. The war in Syria -- which began with the brutal repression of anti-government demonstrations in 2011 -- has killed more than 280,000 people and displaced millions. It has evolved into a brutal, complex civil war among the government, rebels, jihadists, and Kurds, each carving out zones of control.

Cook 'ready' for Pakistan after Sri Lanka success

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook said he was looking forward to the challenge of facing Pakistan following his sides commanding Test series win over Sri Lanka.Rain meant only 12.2 overs were possible at Lords on Monday as the third Test ended in a draw. But although denied a whitewash, England had already done enough to secure a 2-0 series win after dominant victories by an innings and 88 runs and nine wickets over the Lankans at Leeds and Chester-le-Street respectively.England now hold Test series trophies against every other major international side except Pakistan, who beat Cooks men 2-1 in a three-match series in the United Arab Emirates in November last year. However, they will have a chance to put that right when they face Pakistan in a four-Test series starting at Lords on July 14.Theyve got a very good (pace) attack, backed up with spinners, Cook said of Pakistan. Were ready for them. We scored a lot of runs against Australias attack here last year -- I think its going to be a brilliant series. While Test specialist Cook prepares for Pakistan, wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow will be looking to take his red-ball form into the intervening five one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.Bairstows recall into Englands one-day squad was announced just as he was being confirmed as both man-of-the-match at Lords and the hosts overall man of the Test series too.His 167 not out in the first innings at Lords was his Test-best score and came amidst a series scoring-spree that saw Bairstow total 387 runs at an average of 129, with the Yorkshireman also holding 19 catches behind the stumps. Together with James Anderson, who took 21 wickets at a stunningly low average of 10.80, Bairstow was the central figure of the series. Bairstow repeatedly helped England recover from top-order collapses against Sri Lanka and Cook likened his contribution to that of retired former England wicket-keeper Matt Prior.Hes very similar to Matt Prior... when he was at his best, we could often be 100 for five and hed change the momentum, explained Cook.Priors wicket-keeping came under intense scrutiny early in his career, especially as England -- be it Alan Knott, Bob Taylor or Jack Russell -- have long prided themselves on their glovemen.Bairstow, himself the son of the late former Yorkshire and England wicket-keeper David Bairstow, also found his work in the field being called into question after he floored a couple of seemingly straightforward chances against Sri Lanka. Jonny is enjoying both roles, said Cook.He knows how hard he has to work at his keeping -- that is a conversation we do have, added the captain, who has been able to observe Bairstows work closely from his position at first slip. Bairstow, meanwhile, was pleased at maintaining the form he showed in South Africa, where his 150 not out in Cape Town in January gave him a maiden Test century.Off the back of South Africa, it was important to start the summer well, he said.I hope this is just the start of something that will be special for a while. For Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews, the hope is his side, having had time to adjust to English conditions, will raise their game in the white-ball formats. However, the all-rounder accepted England were a much improved one-day team from the side that Sri Lanka thrashed by nine wickets at last years World Cup in Wellington. They play positive cricket and you have got to be on your toes and really good to beat England in the ODI series thats coming up, Mathews said.

Samuels sparks West Indies over Australia

Posted:

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Marlon Samuels produced his best batting effort in One-Day International cricket against Australia to lead the West Indies to a six-wicket victory in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Monday.Set a challenging target after Usman Khawajas 98 and supporting half-centuries from skipper Steve Smith (74) and George Bailey (55) lifted the visitors to 265 for seven batting first, the enigmatic Samuels stroked 92 to ensure that the target was reached with 20 deliveries to spare. Its all about delivering for the team and keeping us in contention in the competition, Man of the Match Samuels said. With a previous best of 63 from 27 ODIs against the most dominant team in this form of the game, the Jamaican right-hander made an important deposit on a significant overdraft against the World Cup-holders, his innings spanning 87 deliveries and decorated with eight fours and four sixes -- the last three of which came off consecutive balls from leg-spinner Adam Zampa over long-off.In keeping with his mercurial nature, he was run out off the very next delivery to have the West Indies at 240 for four in the 41st over. Two more wickets fell to Nathan Coulter-Nile with the score at 254 before Kieron Pollard and Carlos Brathwaite formalised victory in the 46th over.Denesh Ramdin also played a key role in the run-chase. He supported Samuels in a 73-run fourth-wicket stand and continued to play sensibly following the demise of his senior partner before being bowled by Coulter-Nile for 29.Victory pulled the West Indies within a point of leaders Australia in the three-team standings.West Indies next play South Africa on Wednesday at the same venue.Samuels had joined Darren Bravo at the crease following a rollicking opening stand of 74 in ten overs from Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher. Both benefited from dropped chances by Khawaja before all-rounder James Faulker removed Fletcher for 27 while Zampa trapped Charles in front for 48.Bravo and Samuels then steadied the West Indies chase, keeping them well on course in an 82-run third-wicket partnership that was broken when Zampa was summoned back into the attack and removed Bravo for 39 via at bat-pad catch that lobbed comfortably to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.Earlier, Khawajas promotion to open the batting in the absence of the injured David Warner paid immediate dividends. He lost Aaron Finch in the very first over to West Indies captain Jason Holder but then featured in a 170-run second-wicket partnership with Smith, who overcame the nagging discomfort of a right leg injury to help put his team in a commanding position by the time he departed in the 35th over, the victim of a clever change of pace from all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite.Khawaja was on the verge of a maiden ODI hundred but, becalmed in the nineties, he took on the challenge of a third run for his third-wicket partner, Bailey, and was found short of his ground by Jerome Taylors return from the boundary to stand-in wicketkeeper Fletcher. His innings occupied 123 deliveries and was embellished by three sixes and four fours.Fletchers position behind the stumps was the result of an injury to Ramdin who fell heavily on his right shoulder when attempting to effect a run out a few overs earlier. He returned for the final overs, taking two catches to dismiss Travis Head and Bailey off Pollard.Head earned his selection after Warner was ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a broken finger sustained against South Africa on Saturday.

Oil falls on prospects of rising output in Canada, Africa

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Monday on expectations for stronger production in North America and Africa and tepid global demand growth.Rising uncertainty about Britains vote next week on remaining in the European Union, as well as a US interest rate decision Wednesday by the Federal Reserves policy arm, the Federal Open Market Committee, also stirred a certain amount of caution in the oil market.Investors seem to have backed away from buying ahead of either this weeks FOMC meeting or Britains referendum on EU membership on June 23, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery fell 19 cents to $48.88 a barrel on the New York Mercantile, its third straight session in the red.In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August, the international benchmark, also shed 19 cents, ending the session at $50.35 a barrel. The fact that maybe Libya is finally reaching the level of stability that the UN-supported government will be able to control most of the oil-export facilities is a factor weighing on the market, said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy and Economic Research. In addition, there were signs that Nigerias unplanned outages may end after a militant group on Sunday urged another armed group, the Niger Delta Avengers, to join negotiations with authorities and put down their weapons.Canadian oil production, which dropped by about 1.2 million barrels a day during the peak of wildfires in May, is expected to slowly recover as the blazes diminish. For Oliver Sloup of iiTrader.com, a lot of the market unease was due to Fridays Baker Hughes oil rig report that showed the number of active US rigs rose for the second week in a row, pointing to a possible coming upturn in US output. We are seeing some rigs come back on line, Sloup said. Three times is a trend. If we continue to see that happen youre going to see prices run out of steam.Meanwhile June report of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries kept its global oil demand forecast for this year unchanged at 94.18 million barrels a day, up 1.2 million barrels from last year. But OPEC forecast that the excess supply in the market is likely to ease over the coming quarters.

Euro, yen gain as markets wait for Fed

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro and yen both headed higher Monday ahead of the Federal Reserves policy meeting, while the pound dropped as fears rise over the looming Brexit vote.Caution reigned in the markets, pushing the euro to $1.1292, and the yen rose to 106.19 against the dollar at 2100 GMT.The pound fell to two-month lows against the greenback and the euro before pulling back slightly to $1.4245 and to 79.26 pence per euro. These flight-to-quality trades have been underway since last Wednesday, driven by growing fears of Brexit, the British exit from the European Union at stake in a June 23 referendum, said analysts at the Institute of International Finance. This suggests that a Leave vote could still have a very large market impact, exacerbating the fall in global equities and major government bond yields, as well as boosting the yen and euro, they said.Meanwhile the Federal Reserve opens a two-day monetary policy review on Tuesday, with no rate increase expected but eyes on how the Fed characterizes the current tepid picture for US economic growth. On Thursday the Bank of Japan also concludes a policy review, with some economists predicting more easing measures.

Scientists discover giant new planet orbiting two suns

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Astronomers have discovered the largest planet outside our solar system orbiting two stars, at a distance that would make it potentially habitable for people, scientists announced Monday.A team of NASA astronomers that made the discovery using the Kepler space telescope revealed the findings at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society in San Diego, California. The gaseous planet -- dubbed Kepler-1647 b -- is the size of Jupiter and has a wide orbit, revolving around its two stars in 1,107 days, or around three years. The discovery is the eleventh of its kind since 2005.Planets that orbit two stars -- known as circumbinary planets -- are sometimes called Tatooines, after the similar fictional planet in the movie Star Wars where Luke Skywalker was raised.Kepler-1647 b is further from its two stars than any other known circumbinary planet, placing it in an orbit that puts the planet within the so-called habitable zone, a statement from San Diego State University (SDSU) said.In theory, that would make the planet neither too hot nor too cold for human habitation, and water could exist in liquid form. However, Kepler-1647 b is gaseous like Jupiter, making the possibility life could exist there unlikely.Still, any large moons orbiting the planet could possibly host life.At 4.4 billion years old, Kepler-1647 b is roughly the same age as the Earth. Its stars are also similar to the Sun, one slightly larger and the other slightly smaller, according to a research paper set to appear in The Astrophysical Journal.Located near the Cygnus constellation, the planet lies some 3,700 light-years away from the Earth (a light-year is the equivalent of around 5.9 billion miles, or 9.5 billion kilometers).Researchers are able to detect planets outside the solar system -- called exoplanets -- when they pass in front of their stars, causing slight dips in brightness, the researchers said. But finding circumbinary planets is much harder than finding planets around single stars, co-author William Welsh, an SDSU astronomer, said. The transits are not regularly spaced in time and they can vary in duration and even depth.Researchers who detect potential exoplanets use advanced computer software to verify the discoveries, a typically long and arduous process.Astronomer Laurance Doyle of the SETI Institute -- whose mission is to search for extraterrestrial intelligence -- first noticed Kepler-1647 bs transit in 2011.Scientists required several years to collect and analyze additional data before they could confirm the planets discovery.

Khawaja leads Australia to 265/7 against West Indies

Posted:

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Usman Khawaja fell two runs short of a maiden One-Day International century as Australia posted a competitive 265 for seven batting first against the West Indies in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Monday.Opening the batting in the absence of the injured David Warner, Khawaja got to 98 before being run out at the strikers end pushing for a third run in partnership with George Bailey. He featured in a 170-run second-wicket partnership with Steve Smith, the Australian captain contributing 74 despite being hampered by a right leg injury.Baileys pugnacious 55 prevented the innings from losing momentum completely over the final ten overs when Australias middle-order struggled to dominate.West Indies captain Jason Holder chose to field first on winning the toss, a decision that was greeted with some surprise given the excellent batting conditions. However, Holder appeared to have justified his action when he removed Aaron Finch in the first over of the match, the right-hander edging a lifting delivery to Sulieman Benn at slip before he had scored. But there was to be no more success for the home side until the 35th over with Khawaja and Smith first coming to terms with the occasionally awkward bounce before dominating a bowling attack that lacked any real venom. While boundaries were few and far between, the pair kept the West Indies on their toes with purposeful running, Smith being the more urgent of the two despite the increasing discomfort of what was later diagnosed as a twinge of the right quadriceps muscle.Clearly intent on increasing the pace of scoring, Australias skipper fell to a slower delivery from Carlos Brathwaite, the all-rounder following through to take the steepling catch off his own bowling. Khawaja became becalmed in the nineties and the desire to keep the scoreboard ticking over contributed to his demise as Jerome Taylors throw from the third-man boundary to substitute wicketkeeper Andre Fletcher found him just short of his ground. His innings occupied 123 deliveries and was embellished by three sixes and four fours.Fletchers position behind the stumps was the result of an injury to regular gloveman Denesh Ramdin, who fell heavily on his right shoulder when attempting to affect a run out a few overs earlier. He recovered sufficiently though to return to duty for the final overs of the innings, taking two catches to dismiss debutant Travis Head and Bailey off Kieron Pollard.Head earned his selection after David Warner was ruled out of the rest of the tournament having sustained a fractured finger in the field against South Africa on Saturday.

England call-up uncapped trio for Sri Lanka T20

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England included the uncapped trio of batsman Dawid Malan and bowlers Tymal Mills and Liam Dawson in a 13-man squad for their upcoming Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka.Malan, born in London but brought up in South Africa, gets his chance after impressing for Englands second-string Lions team. Fast bowler Mills now only plays limited overs cricket because of a back condition, while Hampshire left-arm spinner Dawson is also a useful batsman.England will be looking to build on the form that saw them finish runners-up to the West Indies in this years World Twenty20 in India.None of the uncapped trio, however, were included in Englands 14-man squad for the five one-days internationals against Sri Lanka that will take place before the lone Twenty20 international. But Jonny Bairstow, fresh from being named man-of-the-match in the drawn third Test against Sri Lanka, was back in the one-day squad.Bairstow, also Englands man of the series in a 2-0 campaign win over Sri Lanka, was one of three glovemen in the one-day squad along with regular white-ball keeper Jos Buttler and Kents Sam Billings.Middlesex batsman Eoin Morgan retained the captaincy of both the ODI and T20 squads, with Test skipper Alastair Cook not having played limited overs cricket for England since before last years World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. Meanwhile Test new-ball duo James Anderson and Stuart Broad were again spared white-ball duty ahead of Englands four-match series in the five-day format at home to Pakistan starting next month. We have made good progress over the past 12 months in all white-ball cricket, which has been very encouraging, said England national selector James Whitaker. The six matches coming up against Sri Lanka will give the players a good test of their credentials. The T20 squad has a balanced feel to it with an exciting blend of youth and experience.Former England batsman Whitaker also said: It is important for this group of players to make a mark this summer as we continue to improve ahead of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy (ODI) tournament this time next year.England ODI squad:Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire, wkt), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wkt), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Alex Hales Hales (Nottinghamshire), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), James Vince (Hampshire), David Willey (Yorkshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).England T20 squad:Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire, wkt), Sam Billings (Kent, wkt), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wkt), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Chris Jordan (Sussex), Dawid Malan (Middlesex), Tymal Mills (Sussex), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), James Vince (Hampshire), David Willey (Yorkshire).

'Pretty good' England please Cook

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook was a proud if frustrated skipper after rain helped deny his side a series clean sweep against Sri Lanka as the third Test at Lords ended in a draw on Monday.Rain meant only 12.2 overs were possible on Mondays final day, with Sri Lanka 78 for one when play was finally abandoned after Cook set them a target of 362 for victory. The result meant England took the three-match series 2-0 after crushing wins by an innings and 88 runs and nine wickets at Leeds and Durham respectively. It could have been a really good days cricket -- 100 overs to get 300 runs on a pretty good Lords wicket, said Cook. However, opening batsman Cook -- who made 85 in the first innings at Lords -- was proud of his teams performance during a series where he became the first England batsman, and the youngest from any country, to score 10,000 Test runs. We won two, one by an innings, one by nine wickets and we declared in the other to try to set up a win, said the 31-year-old Essex left-hander. A pretty good three games.England now hold Test series trophies against every other leading nation except Pakistan, who they face in a four-Test series starting at Lords on July 14.Of course there is always that room for improvement, said Cook. But weve won another one of the trophies and weve got another one to go against Pakistan. The Sri Lanka series was a personal triumph for Jonny Bairstow, Englands wicket-keeper/batsman.Bairstow was named man-of-the-match for his Test-best 167 not out in Englands first innings at Lords. And the 26-year-old Yorkshireman was also chosen as Englands man-of-the-series after scoring 387 runs at a huge average of 129, including an innings of 140 at his Headingley home ground in Leeds.Im really pleased to back up the form for Yorkshire in an England shirt, said Bairstow, making the most of his second chance as an England player. Its never nice to get dropped but that really spurred me on to try to get back in the side, added Bairstow, who also held 19 catches during the Sri Lanka series.Meanwhile Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lanka captain, looked forward to an improved showing from his side in the upcoming five-match one-day international series against England.I thought we started off pretty poorly in the first couple of games, he said. We came into the series in our second innings in Durham (when Sri Lanka made 475).Now weve had a good month or so in England so hopefully we can come back and beat England (in the ODIs).

England and Sri Lanka draw third Test

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Rain thwarted Englands bid for a 3-0 series whitewash of Sri Lanka as the third Test at Lords ended in a draw on Monday. The result saw England take the three-match series 2-0.Sri Lanka, set 362 to win, finished on 78 for one after rain, which had prevented any play before lunch on the final day, finally saw the umpires abandon the match as a draw at 5:12pm local time (1612 GMT).Dimuth Karunaratne was 37 not out and Kusal Mendis 17 not out after only 12.2 overs were possible on Monday.Jonny Bairstow was named man-of-the-match and Englands man of the series.Bairstow made a Test-best 167 not out in the first innings at Lords and in the series as a whole scored 387 runs at an average of 129, including two hundreds. To be back in England and hit the ground running was the main aim, said Bairstow, whose first stint as a Test player ended with him being dropped from the team.Bairstow has been in superb batting form since making 150 not out in his maiden Test century against South Africa in Cape Town in January.I felt like I had a few people to prove wrong, said Bairstow. This series and in South Africa I think Ive done that. The Sri Lanka series also saw wicket-keeper Bairstow hold 19 catches, although doubts about his glovework persisted after he grassed a couple of routine chances.I was pleased, but disappointed to drop a couple, he said. The hard work continues.England won the first Test at Headingley by an innings and 88 runs, before defeating Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the second Test at the Riverside.Kaushal Silva, Sri Lankas man-of-the-series, said: England have a quality fast-bowling line-up.Silva, who made a stylish 79 in the first innings of this match, added: Ive missed out on a hundred at Lords three times, hopefully Ill get another chance next time.England captain Alastair Cook added: It could have been a really good days cricket. It would have been good to see our guys under pressure... but the English weather got in the way.Sri Lanka resumed on Monday on 32 without loss. Karunaratne was 19 not out and Silva unbeaten on 12.In overcast conditions, staying at the crease against the England new-ball duo of Stuart Broad and James Anderson was going to be a tough task for Sri Lanka, let alone reaching a target that would set a new record for the highest fourth-innings total to win a Test at Lords, surpassing the West Indies 344 for one against England in 1984. Mondays first over saw Silva edge Broad just short of first slip Cook. But Anderson, Englands all-time leading Test-wicket taker, struck when Silva, padding up after failing to pick an inswinger going against the Lords slipe, was lbw for 16.No sooner had Silva been dismissed than the umpires took the players off the field for rain. But the weather relented for play to resume after tea.Mendis swept occasional off-spinner Joe Roots second ball for six but then the rain returned and the umpires took the players off for the final time.Bairstows century and Cooks 85 were the major contributions to Englands first innings 416.Sri Lanka could only manage 288 in reply, despite fifties from Karunaratne and Silva.Englands second innings 233 for seven declared saw Alex Hales again fall short of a maiden Test century with 94 -- his third fifty of a series where the opener had twice been dismissed in the 80s.But there was controversy when Hales, then on 58, was bowled by Nuwan Pradeep on Sunday only to be spared by an incorrectly called front-foot no-ball from Australian umpire Rod Tucker.Sri Lanka continue their tour with two one-day internationals against Ireland in Dublin on Thursday and Saturday before facing England in a five-match ODI series.

WIndies win toss, Australia to bat in ODI

BASSETERRE (AFP) - West Indies captain Jason Holder won the toss and put Australia in to bat in the fifth match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Monday.Despite being routed for 116 on the way to a six-wicket defeat at the hands of the Aussies in their last match in Guyana, the home side remains unchanged and will again be relying on the combination of spin and pace to restrict the World Cup-holders and leaders of the competition.Australia have made two changes from the team that fought back to defeat South Africa by 36 runs in the first match in St Kitts on Saturday.David Warner, whose hundred earned him the Man of the Match award and laid the platform for his teams formidable total against the Proteas, has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament with a fractured finger.
