US oil prices end above $50 for first time since July Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - US oil prices finished above $50 a barrel for the first time since July on Tuesday as a tightening supply picture and a weaker dollar further boosted the commodity.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery rose 67 cents to $50.36 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, capping a rally from the low near $25 a barrel in February.Analysts said ongoing uncertainty about Nigerias outlook for petroleum production was strengthening the oil market.Nigerias government and military chiefs met governors of oil-producing states after announcing it planned peace talks with militants who have repeatedly attacked pipelines and installations, slashing output.Attacks have cut output to 1.6 million barrels per day, well below the budgeted-for 2.2 million barrels per day, heaping further pressure on an economy badly hit by the global fall in the price of crude since mid-2014.Analysts said oil was also boosted by a dip in the dollar against major currencies after Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen on Monday emphasized that interest rate increases would be gradual after Fridays very weak jobs report. A weak dollar can boost demand for crude, which is sold on global markets in the US currency.A good portion of what were seeing during the last couple of days is a reaction to the anticipation the Fed will not change its interest rates and thats leading to a weaker dollar, said James Williams of WTRG Economics. |
Australian, Canadian dollars surge Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - Australias and Canadas dollars jumped against the US greenback Tuesday, while the euro held flat and the yen edged higher. The decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to hold interest rates steady after last weeks strong growth report sent the Australian currency up 1.2 percent to 74.56 cents.Last week, Canberra reported the economy grew 3.1 percent year-on-year in the first quarter, outstripping most of the worlds advanced economies.Meanwhile, a surging oil price, which topped $50 for the first time since July, boosted Canadas dollar by 0.7 percent, to Can$1.2739 per one US dollar.Aside from RBA and higher oil prices, the commodity currencies also benefited from the rally in stocks, improvement in risk appetite and continued weakness of the US dollar, said Kathy Lien of BKK Asset management. But she said now the markets are focused on Chinese trade data to be released early Wednesday. For the rallies to last, tonights Chinese data needs to be good, she said. |

ICC insists they have learnt from McCullum case Posted: LONDON (AFP) - The International Cricket Council said Tuesday they had improved their procedures for handling evidence of match-fixing after coming under fire from Brendon McCullum. The former New Zealand captain, delivering the MCC Spirit of Cricket Cowdrey Lecture at Lords on Monday, recalled his anger that the evidence he gave against his old international team-mate Chris Cairns in a match-fixing court case in London last year was leaked prior to trial. How can the games governing body expect players to cooperate with it when it is then responsible for leaking confidential statements to the media? McCullum, now playing for Lords-based Middlesex in English crickets domestic Twenty20 competition, said Monday. The legal case ended with Cairns found not guilty and McCullum said he should have been given more warning from the outset of first giving evidence to the ICC in 2011 that he could be called as a witness in a court action.I think players deserve better from the ICC and that, in the future, the evidence gathering exercise has to be much more thorough, more professional. In my opinion a person taking a statement should ensure that the witness is advised about what may occur.Responding to McCullums address the ICC acknowledged his stance but insisted they had not been the source of the leak. The ICC commended Brendon McCullum two years ago -- and continues to do so today -- for his brave, courageous and principled stand against corruption in cricket, the global governing body said in a statement. The ICC also understood and shared his dismay at the leak of his confidential statement, which prompted a thorough and detailed investigation by the ICC.While the probe proved that the origin of the leak was not from within the ICC, it failed to establish beyond doubt the actual source. Nevertheless, the ICC has already put strong measures in place to ensure this type of incident is never repeated. The statement added: In 2014 (and unrelated to the leak of confidential information), a comprehensive review of the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit was carried out to review its processes, functions and resources. The review was conducted by the ICCs Integrity Working Party (IWP), which included independent corruption experts. All the recommendations of the IWP were reviewed and adopted by the ICC Board during the 2015 ICC Annual Conference in Barbados.Every event or incident provides an organisation with opportunities to review its structures and measure its operations against best practice. This is exactly what the ICC has done in this particular case -- it believes the outcome has been processes, procedures and resources which have been further bolstered and strengthened. The ICC reconfirms that it is doing absolutely everything in its power to fight the threat of corruption in the sport and will continue to do so. It also reaffirms its commitment to gain and retain the complete trust of cricketers, and to work in close co-operation with all stakeholders in cricket. The ICC were not the only cricket authority in McCullums sights on Monday.Hard-hitting batsman McCullum said Lou Vincent, another former New Zealand team-mate had been harshly treated in receiving a life ban from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) after admitting engaging in spot-fixing -- deliberately under-peforming to stage a betting coup during a game -- in county matches. The ECB ban was applied worldwide and McCullum said: I struggle with the severity of this when a player has cooperated fully and accepted responsibility. It is vital that players found guilty of offences having acknowledged wrongdoing are shown a degree of clemency -- failing which there seems to be very little incentive for them to come forward. |
Ramprakash tells England to 'finish the job' against Sri Lanka Posted: LONDON (AFP) - England batting coach Mark Ramprakash has called on the side to be ruthless as they go in search of a 3-0 series clean sweep of Sri Lanka at Lords this week.Convincing wins by an innings and nine wickets at Headingley and the Riverside respectively, have seen Alastair Cooks men surge into an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-Test campaign. But recent contests have seen England lapse late on, losing the second and final Test of last years home series in a 1-1 draw and going down in the fifth Test after the Ashes had been won as Australia reduced their losing margin to 3-2.It was a theme that was repeated earlier this year in South Africa, where England had won the series by the time of their heavy 280-run defeat at Centurion. Ramprakash, speaking to reporters at Lords on Tuesday, said the side were conscious of their habit of slipping-up late on. I think the players are very much aware of that, he said.Im sure it will be reiterated over the next couple of days, the former England batsman added. But Ramprakash, who started his career at Lords with Middlesex, said he hoped the occasion of a Test at the home of cricket would help every England player raise their game.A Test match at Lords is the pinnacle of your career, or certainly one of the highlights, he said.So all the players have plenty to play for individually, and that will help collectively as a team.It should come from within.I hope lessons will have been learned because this group of players have come unstuck in the last Test, most recently in South Africa. That wasnt a good feeling, so we hope the guys will want to finish the job off this week.Heading into Thursdays match, top-order batsman Nick Compton has arguably most to prove after admitting before the second Test he needed runs to secure his England place.Compton only managed nine in the first innings at Durham but was 22 not out second time around as England eased their way to a dominant victory. I thought there were good signs at Durham, said Ramprakash of Englands number three. He has something to build on -- I thought he was very composed in the second innings there.I hope that will carry over into this game. |
Root backs Compton to come good at Lord's Posted: LONDON (AFP) - Joe Root is well aware of how a hundred at Lords can affect a career and believes Nick Compton can produce a big score when England face Sri Lanka in the third Test at the home of cricket this week.Compton, Englands number three, will be back on his Middlesex home ground and one where his grandfather Denis, one of Englands greatest batsmen, has a stand named after him at the Nursery End, having himself starred for club and country on numerous occasions at Lords either side of the Second World War.But it is recent history that is of greater concern to Nick Compton.Prior to Englands nine-wicket win in the second Test at Chester-le-Street that gave the hosts an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, Compton acknowledged he was playing for his place.Scores of nine and 22 left Compton with an average a touch above 30 from 15 Tests in which he has scored two hundreds.Comptons record leaves him vulnerable to being dropped and, at the age of 32, he may not have that many more chances in which to nail down a Test place.Root, several years younger at 25, felt under pressure when he faced Sri Lanka at Lords in 2014 after being dropped from the climax of Englands preceding Ashes whitewash in Australia. The Yorkshireman responded with a maiden double century and was well aware of the innings importance in helping launch his ascent into becoming one of the worlds leading batsmen. It was my first game back in the team ... I almost had a point to prove not just to everyone else but to myself, and show that I can play at this level, said Root, speaking at an event held by Test series sponsors Investec at Lords on Tuesday. If Id have got two noughts, you dont know how the rest of the summer would have unfolded. It gave me a lot of confidence. I look back at that and think it was a massive stepping stone, proving to myself that I can score big runs.Root said he saw similarities in the situation Compton found himself in heading into Thursdays match at Lords.Traditionally its a very good place to bat, its his home ground and he has a point to prove, Root explained. It would be great to see him put in a match-winning performance -- which hes more than capable of doing.Compton has been criticised for being an excessively intense player who is too wrapped up in his own game to succeed at the highest level.Similar comments were made about Mark Ramprakash, now Englands batting coach, whose career saw him join a select group of batsmen to have scored 100 first-class hundreds -- but with only two of those centuries coming in Tests.I can certainly relate to Nick feeling on edge and know with the increased scrutiny about his position, said Ramprakash at Lords on Monday. Ive found him committed, dedicated, focused. He does think about his game deeply, and thats fine -- the best players do.In my mind, I look at him and see a top player who is very capable of getting thousands more international runs.He must still latch on to the bad ball when it comes along. If he does that, hes going to be in good shape.Root is certainly just that and yet he remains eager for runs with the memory of his 80 in the second Test tainted in his eyes by the half-cock shot that ended with him lobbing a catch to point when a hundred was in his sights. It was a car crash, really - it was awful, Root said as he recalled his dismissal. I am contributing quite consistently - but you dont win games with 70s and 80s. But such a score could help prolong Comptons Test career. |
Dhoni says future as captain rests with BCCI Posted: MUMBAI (AFP) - Indias Mahendra Singh Dhoni said Tuesday he will remain captain as long as the countrys cricket board sees fit, ahead of a tour of Zimbabwe this month.Dhonis future as captain was called into question after Indias lacklustre showing in the World Twenty20 but the limited-overs skipper has showed no sign of surrendering to his critics.Former Team Director Ravi Shastri recently backed Test skipper Virat Kohli to lead the country in all formats, saying Dhoni should be allowed to enjoy the game as a player, free from the responsibility of captaincy. Its not that I dont enjoy the game, this decision (on captaincy) will be taken by the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India), its not up to me to decide on that, Dhoni said in response to Shastris comments. With big guns including Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina rested, Dhoni will have the tough task of inspiring a bunch of youngsters in the African nation.India will play three one-day internationals and T20s in Harare in the tour starting June 11, with as many as five uncapped players in the 16-man squad. I think it will be a very different experience (for me), Dhoni told reporters in his pre-departure press conference in Mumbai. The reason being you keep playing with almost the same group of players, so you know the roles and responsibility. There will be quite a few players in this bilateral series whom I will be playing with for the first time, said Dhoni. With quite a few Indian Premier League performers like leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal and medium-pacers Barinder Sran and Jasprit Bumrah in the line-up, Dhoni is banking on his bowling department.Overall they have been good on paper, both the batting and the bowling. You may say that bowling has had a bit more exposure to international cricket than our batting, said the wicketkeeper-batsman.Dhoni also said that Indias next coach should have an understanding of the culture and upbringing of the nation. The BCCI is in the process of recruiting a new coach, applications for which close on June 10.The captain, who had a forgettable IPL season with newcomers Rising Pune Supergiants, believes that performances in the cash-rich league are not always the best judge of a players international worth.I have always said IPL is a platform where you identify talent. It is very different because it is still a form of domestic cricket, he said. The moment you are told that you are representing India, there is a different pressure, said Dhoni. |

Deadlock persists over TORs as govt, Opposition unable to reach compromise Posted: ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) –Yet another meeting held between the government and Opposition sides over the formulation of the Terms of References (TORs) catering the Panama Leaks investigation ended fruitless as the deadlock between both sides still persists, reported Dunya News on Tuesday.Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Aitzaz Ahsan stated that the Opposition has agreed over three out of the four TORs presented by the government but the situation has still not changed. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the government wants that action should not be taken against some of the offshore companies.Minister of Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique stated that the Opposition’s TORs cater to the investigation of a single individual instead of dealing with across the board accountability.Conflict between both sides persists over four points as the Opposition wants the name of Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and family be included in the TORs and investigation be carried out against them whereas the government wants the scope of investigation be widened.Points of contention:1. The government side intends that the name of the PM should not be included in the TORs. However, Opposition members state that the investigation of the matter cannot be completed without the accountability of PM Nawaz.2. Another point of conflict is that the government demands that investigation against all Pakistanis named in the Panama Papers and loan waivers be carried out at the same time whereas the Opposition is of the view that investigation must be initiated from Prime Minister Nawaz’s family.3. The third point of conflict is that the government supports the formation of a permanent law that deals with the investigation of all sorts of corruption but is showing reluctance over including the Panama Papers in the this regards whereas the Opposition is trying its best that any such legislation must include the Papers as well.4. The fourth and final bone of contention is that the government is about to make amendment in the Income tax Act after the introduction of the budget whereas the Opposition is of the view that this is an attempt to make sure that no accountability is done of the ruling party’s family.Next meeting of the Parliamentary committee shall be held on Friday morning at 11:30 in the morning. |
