Narine, Pollard sink Proteas in West Indies romp

Posted:

PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Sunil Narine snared career-best figures of six for 27 on his return to West Indies colours as the hosts defeated South Africa by four wickets in the opening match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International series at the Guyana National Stadium on Friday.Forced to remodel his action after it was deemed illegal during the Caribbean sides last ODI campaign in Sri Lanka last November, the 28-year-old mystery spinner was at his mesmerising best on a turgid surface where the South Africans were dismissed for 188 off 46.5 overs. They found it difficult to establish any sort of momentum despite two useful partnerships at the top of the order.Narines returns were not only a personal milestone but also the best-ever by any opponents in one-day cricket against South Africa.Ive had to change my bowling action almost 80 percent and its great to see how it has worked out, said Man of the Match Narine. I really hope I can keep on playing for the West Indies for the rest of my career.Kieron Pollard, back in the good graces of West Indies selectors after 20 months in the ODI wilderness following the shock abandonment of the tour of India in October of 2014, then lifted his team to the target with a robust unbeaten 67 that included six sixes.I had my plans going out to bat and it came off tonight, he said. I really missed being part of that successful World T20 squad but I have recovered from injury faster than I thought and its great to be back in the West Indies team.It was the first time in 15 years that the Caribbean side had defeated the South Africans in a one-dayer on home soil.Rilee Rossouw topscored with 61 and featured in a 78-run third-wicket partnership with skipper AB de Villiers. That effort followed an opening stand of 52 between Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla. However the Proteas collapsed from the comparative comfort of 160 for three, their last seven wickets falling for just 28 runs.Rossouw was one of the spinners scalps, falling to a good low catch by Carlos Brathwaite at first slip.Brathwaite had earlier broken the opening stand of de Kock and Amla, de Kock attempting an injudicious heave to be comprehensively bowled. Narine then made his first strike by trapping Amla leg-before in the very next over.Yet it was the demise of de Villiers that proved to be the most crucial.Playing well within himself and mindful of the challenging batting conditions, he compiled 31 off 49 deliveries without a single boundary but fell to a good catch off his own bowling by pacer Jerome Taylor at the start of the 31st over.South Africa had just ended a period of 23 overs without finding the boundary rope and it appeared de Villiers and Rossouw were on the cusp of acceleration before the captains departure. From then on it was the Narine show as he scythed through the rest of the visitors batting. Its the slowest pitch I have come across for some, de Villiers said. But weve got no excuses.Set a relatively modest target, the West Indies opening pair of Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher rode their luck in a 37-run stand before the introduction of the spinners changed the complexion of the chase.Imran Tahir bowled both with googlies while Aaron Phangiso and part-timer J.P. Duminy removed Marlon Samuels and Denesh Ramdin respectively to have the hosts wobbling at 76 for four. But Pollard, whose first three scoring shots were towering sixes, dominated a 74-run fourth-wicket stand with Darren Bravo to take the West Indies closer to the target.Bravo fell to Phangiso for 30 and Carlos Brathwaite perished attempting a bit hit of Phangiso. But captain Jason Holder joined Pollard to ensure there were no more alarms on the way to a morale-boosting victory for a team classified as underdogs alongside the South Africans and ahead of Sundays meeting with World Cup holders Australia at the same venue.

Oil prices fall after poor US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices fell Friday after a dismal US jobs report added to worries about weak global economic growth and slow growth in crude demand. Also adding to the downward pressure was the first rise in months in the number of oil drilling rigs deployed in the United States, suggesting that the recent rebound in crude prices could lead to higher US output.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in July finished down 55 cents at $48.62 a barrel. The London Brent contract for August delivery fell 40 cents to close at $49.64.Prices held steady in early trade despite the failure of OPEC to take action to shore up prices in its semi-annual meeting in Vienna on Thursday. But a surprisingly poor US employment report for May, with the number of monthly jobs added only one-quarter of what was expected, took the wind out of the crude trade.A drop in the dollar of more than 1.7 percent against the euro and 2.0 percent on the yen failed to shore up buying as well. Also weighing, said Tim Evans at Citi Futures, was the lifting of the force majeure declaration on ExxonMobil exports in OPEC member Nigeria, which may hint at a recovery in overall Nigerian supplies, he said.A rebound to a more typical 2.0 million barrels a day in production would likely push OPEC total output to 33.0 million barrels a day or more, delaying the rebalancing of the global market, he added.Meanwhile the Baker Hughes weekly North American rig count, which helps measure exploration and production activity, rose for the first time in months after hitting a multi-decade low.It showed an increase of nine onshore oil drilling rigs in the United States, a possible reaction to the lure of higher crude prices.A steady fall in US oil production, by more than 800,000 barrels a day since one year ago, has paralleled the sharp pullback of drilling rigs active in the US oil field.

US jobs data sink stock rally, dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - A dismal US jobs report sank the dollar and Wall Street stocks and cut short a rally on European bourses on Thursday as it heightened worries about weak international growth. The smallest monthly job creation tally in nearly six years took a looming rate hike by the Federal Reserve off the table, probably until September or later, according to analysts. The US added only 38,000 net new positions in May, a quarter of the amount expected, clearly catching the Fed off guard after top officials had repeatedly said a June or July rate increase was in the cards. While continued low rates is good news to many, it hit hard the shares of banks amid expectations their lending margins will be narrowed. Citigroup lost 3.4 percent and Bank of America 3.5 percentEven so, overall losses on the US markets were small. The S&P 500 ended 0.3 percent lower and the Dow fell 0.2 percent. The US report reversed a rally in Europe that followed firm gains in Asian markets. Frankfurt and Paris both fell 1.0 percent. But London managed a rise of 0.4 percent, helped by gains in commodities and energy stocks thanks to the weaker dollar.Just as US investors were getting used to the idea that we were going to see some form of rate rise in the next two months, this jobs number has thrown that into serious doubt, said analyst Michael Hewson at CMC Markets. If this slowdown continues it raises the question as to whether well see a rate rise at all this year. But some saw the slowdown as likely temporary, reflecting caution after the slowness of the US economy and stock markets at the beginning of the year. This report is a temporary rate-hike killer, but we believe strongly that it will prove to be a blip rather than a change in the trend, said Ian Shepherdson of Pantheon Macroeconomics. The jobs report hit the US dollar hard. The greenback lost 2.0 percent to $1.1364 per euro and 2.1 percent at 106.63 yen.Gold added 2.8 percent at $1,246.50 an ounce, while oil prices, which had held up despite the inaction of OPEC in its meeting Thursday, fell modestly, with Brent crude losing 40 cents to close at $49.64.The pound, which fell sharply earlier in the week on uncertainty over the coming Brexit vote, clawed back some ground against the dollar on Friday.Prime Minister David Cameron on Thursday urged Britons not to roll a dice by voting to leave the European Union on June 23 in his first television grilling of the referendum campaign.

ICC conducts dope tests on Pakistan's Shah, Misbah

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Crickets world governing body is conducting dope tests on four Pakistani players, including leg-spinner Yasir Shah, suspended for three months earlier this year, team manager Intikhab Alam confirmed Friday.Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq was also tested by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The team can ill afford any positive results, which could have a significant impact on their upcoming tour in England, during which the results are expected to be confirmed. The ICC, which has been a signatory of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) since 2006, routinely conducts such tests in and out of competition.Shah was provisionally suspended in December last year after he tested positive for chlortalidone, a masking agent under the WADA list of banned substances. He was barred for three months after he pleaded guilty and told the ICC that he had inadvertently taken his wifes blood pressure medication. His ban was lifted in late March, making him eligible for the England tour.Alam said Shahs test could come under the spotlight.Besides Shah, Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, one-day skipper Azhar Ali and fast bowler Junaid Khan were also tested but Shahs test could be targeted, he told AFP. Shah is seen as Pakistans main wicket-taker for the four-match Test series in England, which starts at Lords from July 14.Pakistan will also play five one-days and a Twenty20 international on the tour.Their last tour to England in 2010 was marred by a spot-fixing case which resulted in five-year bans on then Test captain Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir.Amir returned to the national team in January this year and is expected to be named for all three formats for the tour.

ICC calls for clampdown on bat size

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Indias Anil Kumble and several other former Test players on an International Cricket Council committee have urged the sports law-makers to bring in new restrictions on the size of bats amid concerns over a glut of run-scoring.Following a two-day meeting at Lords, the headquarters of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the ICC cricket committee chaired by Kumble issued a statement saying it wanted MCC to instigate a clampdown. The MCC still has overall global responsibility for crickets Laws or rules. While there are limitations on bat length (when the lower portion of the handle is inserted it shall not be more than 38in/96.5cm) and width (4.25in/10.8cm at its widest part), none currently exist on depth and weight. The balance between bat and ball appears to have become especially loaded against bowlers in limited overs games. However, whether it is modern bats, the innovations brought in by Twenty20 cricket, increasingly short boundaries or a combination of factors that have led to an orgy of run-scoring is open to debate.Last years 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand witnessed 38 hundreds, nearly one every game, and 463 sixes, an average of one every nine overs.West Indies Chris Gayle struck 16 sixes in racing to the fastest one-day international double hundred during a World Cup match against Zimbabwe at Canberras Manuka Oval, while New Zealands Martin Guptill hit a six measured at 110 metres in the course of his 237 against the West Indies at Wellington. Thursdays statement from the ICC cricket committee, whose members include several former Test batsmen in Englands Andrew Strauss, Indias Rahul Dravid, Sri Lankas Mahela Jayawardene, and current Australia coach Darren Lehmann said: MCC sought the committees guidance on the desirability of making changes in order to redress the balance between bat and ball. The committee received a research paper from MCC citing a wealth of scientific and statistical evidence showing bats have become more powerful in recent years, primarily due to having larger sweet-spots.It added: The committees view was that MCC should strongly consider limiting the dimensions of cricket bats to help achieve a better balance between bat and ball.Modern manufacturers have become increasingly skilled at making bats with larger sweet spots that do not feel as heavy to pick up as the blades that were once only the preserve of 1980s power-hitters such as West Indies great Clive Lloyd and England hero Ian Botham.Developments in ball technology, save for a white ball in one-day matches and the pink ball used in last years inaugural floodlit Test between Australia and New Zealand, have been far less drastic.Bat changes have come about despite an insistence by MCC that the blade remains solely made of wood, as it has been for centuries.Other sports such as tennis and squash, where wood racquets were once the norm, have allowed the use of modern materials such as graphite. But cricket chiefs specified bats must be made of wood after play was held up in a 1979 Ashes Test at Perth by Australia fast bowler Dennis Lillees use of an aluminium bat before he reverted to a traditional model. However, former England opener Mark Butcher, under the hashtag bigbatguff, argued against fresh size restrictions.Dont forget: mis-cue straight up & caught=batsman error. Repeatedly hit out of park=bat makers error, Butcher said. But South Africa batting great Barry Richards said last year that modern-day bats should be brought into line with the relatively slim models he used in his 1970s heyday. The pressing of cricket bats has to be controlled and the thickness in their edges. Maybe there can also be a designated sweet-spot area for bats, Richards told the Sydney Daily Telegraph.Ours used to be about the size of a 50 cent piece but now they are much bigger... These are just a few of my ideas, because batsmen have it too easy.

Narine six-for keeps South Africa to 188

Gayle says victim of 'double standards' in sexism row

Posted:

LONDON, (AFP) - West Indies star Chris Gayle said Friday he was the victim of double standards after sparking a sexism row with comments he made to a female television reporter in Australia.Gayle, 36, came under fire for asking Australian broadcaster Mel McLaughlin out on a date in a live television interview during a Big Bash Twenty20 game in January.I wanted to see your eyes for the first time, hopefully we can win this game and then we can have a drink after as well, said opening batsman Gayle, before adding: Dont blush, baby.Gayle was widely criticised by players past and present for his remarks, as well as by Cricket Australia. The Melbourne Renegades franchise fined him 10,000 Australian dollars ($7,400) and decided against renewing his contract. He fanned the flames further with the recent publication of his autobiography and in an interview last month with a female journalist in The Times magazine. In the article, the Jamaican boasted of his very, very big bat.He also asked journalist Charlotte Edwardes if she had ever had a black man and been in a threesome.Gayle remains one of the biggest draw cards in world cricket and has just started a stint with Somerset in English crickets domestic T20 Blast event, having enjoyed a successful spell with the southwest county in 2015.- Mockery -=============But what he sees as a rejection by Australian cricket still stings, with Gayle feeling his contribution in helping launch the Big Bash has been ignored.I didnt feel like I was being treated right at that particular time, he said in an interview with the BBC World Services Stumped programme, extracts of which were published Friday ahead of Saturdays broadcast. The way of going about it... and the media making a big mockery out of it.To go into details, it was straight up just a lot of double standards. That story didnt get me down one bit. It didnt affect me, I must say. It was just ridiculous how they go about it -- trying to use me as a big scapegoat. He added: For someone being part of the Big Bash for so many years, who actually built the Big Bash from day one, the same name they used to build the Big Bash is the same name they want to tarnish. The Chris Gayle from the first season, if you check it, it was Chris Gayle who started that Big Bash and it blew up this big now -- and next they want to say, you should ban Chris Gayle... you should get rid of Chris Gayle from all leagues around the world... Chris is sexist. You cant brand me for running a joke like that, its just unfortunate and people have their agenda against other people as well.Gayle, a World Twenty20 winner with the West Indies this year, fell for five on his Somerset return against Sussex on Wednesday. His World Service interview was conducted by British sports broadcaster Alison Mitchell. For those asking, Gayle was engaging, interesting, both good humoured & serious - and nervous about a female interviewer, she tweeted Friday.Gayle was prepared to ans (answer) all Qs (questions), and was generous with his time, Mitchell added. There is more to him than his partying reputation.

Messi compared to 'crime boss' at fraud trial

Posted:

BARCELONA, (AFP) - Spanish prosecutors called Friday for Lionel Messi to be absolved on the final day of his tax fraud trial, but the lawyer representing fiscal authorities disagreed, comparing him to a crime boss. The Argentina and Barcelona star and his father Jorge Horacio Messi have been accused of using companies in Belize and Uruguay to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros ($4.6 million) of Messis income earned from his image rights from 2007-09.Prosecutor Raquel Amado called for the footballer to be let off in her closing arguments, a day after he took the stand and said he trusted his father with his finances and knew nothing about how his wealth was managed. There is no evidence that anyone explained anything to him, she said. But Mario Maza, the state attorney representing tax authorities in the trial, said he found it unlikely that Messi knew nothing about the situation. There is no deliberate ignorance here, its fraud and thats all there is to it, because he didnt want to pay his taxes, he said. Its like a crime boss. At the very top is the bigwig who doesnt want to know about the details. He is seeking a fine equivalent to the amount that was allegedly defrauded, plus a prison sentence of 22 and a half months for Messi and his father.Any such prison sentence would likely be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences carrying a sentence of less than two years.- Like basic Chinese -========================The income related to Messis image rights that was allegedly hidden includes endorsement deals with Banco Sabadell, Danone, Adidas, Pepsi-Cola, Procter & Gamble and the Kuwait Food Company.Amado argued that the contracts were long, complicated and in English. For a layperson, if they see so many lawyers signing it, they must believe that its fine, she said in defence of Messi. But Maza argued that the offence was not creating the actual companies, but the act of not paying the money owed to tax authorities. Both the prosecutor and attorney general, however, agreed that Messis father should be found guilty. On Thursday, Jorge Horacio Messi had said he too did not understand the intricacies of managing his sons wealth. All of this was like basic Chinese to me, he said.I asked (the advisors) to look after our assets...and they told us this was the best way.Amado, who is seeking a jail sentence of one-and-a-half years for Messis father, argued that he could not dodge his responsibility by accusing his advisors. The companies in Uruguay -- which much of the probe centres on -- were created and managed by a Barcelona law firm with whom Messis dad communicated.Fraud takes place because there is a decision in that direction, Amado said.Messi and his father did not attend the fourth and final day of the trial. The player had been due to jet off to the United States after his Thursday court appearance for the Copa America where Argentina take on defending champions Chile on Monday. No date has been set for when the court will issue its ruling.

'Ominous' signs in FIFA's leaders' pay deals

Posted:

ZURICH, (AFP) - Sitting on the top of a mountain of football cash, Sepp Blatter, Jerome Valcke and Markus Kattner unilaterally awarded themselves bonuses and contracts worth millions of dollars.Details of a FIFA investigation revealed on Friday that the trio, who formed the pinnacle of the FIFA power pyramid, plotted to enrich themselves and ensure a comfortable future in case they lost their jobs. They gave themselves $80 million (71 million euros) in the past five years alone.Over the last year, however, former FIFA president Blatter, Valcke, his number two as secretary general, and finance director Kattner have been fired or booted out of office and now face growing scrutiny from Swiss and US prosecutors. The evidence appears to reveal a coordinated effort by three former top officials of FIFA to enrich themselves through annual salary increases, World Cup bonuses and other incentives totalling more than 79 million Swiss francs ($80 million) -- in just the last five years, said Bill Burck, a partner with the Quinn Emanuel audit firm.FIFA, now led by Gianni Infantino, even created a compensation subcommittee in 2013 but they failed to rein in the illicit awarding of massive and undue payouts. There are multiple amendments to contracts often approved in close sequence, said a FIFA account of the investigation so far.Additionally, these various contracts were often entered into by Messers Blatter, Valcke and Kattner on the very same day. And more importantly, these dates were very ominous. On April 30, 2011, just before a FIFA presidential election when it was not certain Blatter would get a new four-year term, Valcke and Kattner were given 8.5-year contract extensions until 2019 with big increases in their base salaries and bonuses. They also got generous severance terms that guaranteed them full payment -- up to 17.5 million Swiss francs and 9.8 million Swiss francs respectively -- in case their employment with FIFA was terminated, the likely consequence should Blatter not have been reelected. If their jobs were terminated the two would receive the full value of their contracts even if they were terminated for just cause. FIFA would also pay their legal fees and other costs -- two clauses the report described as appearing to violate mandatory Swiss law.Swiss prosecutors consequently said they were investigating the contracts of the trio, but Blatters lawyer denied accusations of wrongdoing. We look forward to showing FIFA that Mr. Blatters compensation payments were proper, fair and in line with the heads of major professional sports leagues around the world, lawyer Richard Cullen said in a statement.- Bonus a go-go -=================Valcke was eventually dismissed last year over allegations of involvement in the black market sale of 2014 World Cup tickets. He also signed off on a $10 million transfer made by South Africa to disgraced Caribbean football baron Jack Warner that US investigators suspect was a bribe to get support for South Africa to host the 2010 World Cup.Kattner was sacked on May 23 after FIFA started looking into millions of dollars of payments that the finance director, and acting general secretary after Valckes departure, awarded himself. As finance director he had the authority to tell his subordinates in the payroll and HR department how much should be paid out and to whom.FIFA earns more than $5 billion in revenues in the four years between each World Cup. The leading trio had their share, according to their contracts. On December 1, 2010, Blatter, Valcke and Kattner received 23 million Swiss francs in special bonuses after the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The payments were awarded retroactively and apparently without an underlying contract provision stipulating such bonuses. In October 2011, Valcke and Kattner were awarded a combined 14 million Swiss francs in bonuses for the 2014 World Cup and in June 2014 they were made eligible for a combined 15.5 million Swiss francs in bonuses for the 2018 World Cup.Swiss authorities searched Kattners former FIFA office on Thursday. FIFA said they will also inform US authorities, who have already charged about 40 individuals and two companies over football corruption and are continuing to investigate.
