Oil dips ahead of OPEC meeting, US inventories data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell slightly Wednesday in cautious trade on the eve of an OPEC meeting and the latest data on US crude inventories. Some OPEC ministers expressed hope that the oil market would improve in the second half of the year after prices took a beating from abundant supplies as the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries prepared to open its biannual meeting Thursday in Vienna.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in July fell nine cents to $49.01 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for August delivery, in its first day of trade as the European benchmark, was at $49.72 a barrel, down 17 cents from Tuesdays settlement. The OPEC meeting coincides with a key market gauge, the US Department of Energys weekly petroleum report, delayed a day because of Mondays public holiday. Most analysts do not expect the 13-nation cartel will announce any measure to reduce output, especially since prices have rebounded nearly 90 percent from February lows.OPEC, which pumps about a third of the worlds crude, has contributed significantly to the oversupply, led by kingpin Saudi Arabia. There have been some rumors floating around that they may reach some kind of output ceiling. It helped lift prices off their lows of the day, said Mike Dragosits of TD Securities.Tim Evans of Citi Futures said the prospects for any cap on production were limited, with Iran still intent on pushing output higher and others planning to do the same.He added that the recovery in prices has reduced the motivation for any change in policy.Last week oil prices topped $50 for the first time this year, helped by production outages in Canada and Nigeria.OPEC member Venezuelas oil minister Eulogio del Pino noted those outages were likely temporary events. Its not the situation of the market, its some circumstances, he said. When those circumstances are removed, what is going to happen?

Yen rises on tax hike delay; Brexit worries pummel pound

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The yen rose Wednesday, buoyed by Japans delay of a sales tax rise, and the pound fell over uncertainty about whether Britain will vote to stay in the European Union.Japans prime minister, Shinzo Abe, gave the yen a boost with his decision to postpone to 2019 a long-planned sales tax increase amid fears it would hurt the limping economy. The yen surged 1.1 percent against the dollar to 109.53 around 2100 GMT, and was up 0.6 percent against the euro at 122.52 yen.The euro and dollar meanwhile advanced against the pound after polls increasingly showed British voters more in favor of quitting the 28-nation EU ahead of the June 23 referendum. In a case of deja vu... two further Brexit polls have weighed on the pound, as the currencys sensitivity seemingly increases as the referendum date approaches, said XTB analyst David Cheetham.Investors are also cutting their risk exposure ahead of a May US jobs report and the outcome of meetings by the OPEC oil cartel and the European Central Bank on Thursday.Market participants are making the choice to pocket their gains ahead of big macroeconomic events at the end of this week, said analyst Yoav Nizard at FXCM currency brokerage.Euro-watchers will be focused on the European Central Banks meeting Thursday, particularly on ECB President Mario Draghis post-meeting comments, as the bank is expected to leave its ultra-loose policy unchanged.

Windies face S.Africa in tri-nation opener

Posted:

PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Hosts West Indies and South Africa get a tri-nation One-Day International series under way on Friday in Guyana with both teams in rebuilding mode following last years World Cup.Australia, who lifted the global 50-over title for the fifth time with a comprehensive victory over New Zealand in the final in Melbourne 14 months ago, enter the fray on Sunday when they face the Caribbean side before tackling the Proteas two days later. This competition, which follows a three-month period when international cricket has been almost completely dominated by the T20 format, will be played on a triple round-robin basis with three matches each in Guyana, St Kitts and Barbados before the one-off final in Bridgetown on June 26.Despite a historic double triumph of the mens and womens teams at the World T20 in India, West Indies go into the competition as underdogs based on a track record of inconsistency in this version of the sport, both in terms of performance and selection.Jason Holder leads a side that sees the return of all-rounder Kieron Pollard and spinner Sunil Narine. Pollards return to the ODI team for the first time since the controversial abandonment of the India tour in October 2014 has sparked considerable debate given that he did not play in a regional 50-over competition in January -- supposedly a requirement for selection. Narine will be in West Indies colours for the first time in more than six months following another period of rehabilitation after his bowling action was deemed illegal during the limited-over leg of the Sri Lankan campaign near the end of 2015.There is no place in the squad for Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Dwayne Bravo and Darren Sammy, all key members of the World T20 title-winning side but who have apparently been ignored for failing to represent their respective territories at the start of the year, when they were all involved in the Big Bash in Australia.Since losing a pulsating World Cup semi-final to New Zealand and then suffering a shock series defeat in Bangladesh, South Africa have restored their ODI fortunes with close series wins over the New Zealanders, India and England. Notwithstanding their all-round strength, they will rely heavily on outstanding batsman and captain AB de Villiers for runs and inspiration. He missed their lone warm-up fixture, against a West Indies Board Presidents XI in Port of Spain on Sunday, the same day that de Villiers and his Royal Challengers Bangalore side fell nine runs short of a run chase in the Indian Premier League final. In his absence, former captain Hashim Amlas polished 92 at the top of the order anchored South Africas total of 280 for nine. The tourists bowlers did not have things their own way however with the home side getting to 127 for three off 24.1 overs when rain ended the day/night match, the fixture being ruled a tie on the Duckworth/Lewis scoring system.West Indies, without Holder and a couple of other key players who were returning from IPL duty, lost two warm-up matches against a Barbados Select XI, heightening local fears about their competitiveness, especially given the lack of recent ODI match experience. That amounts to only a three-match series in Sri Lanka -- which they lost 3-0 -- since being thrashed by New Zealand at the quarter-final stage of the World Cup.Squads: West Indies - Jason Holder (captain), Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Kieron Pollard, Jonathan Carter, Carlos Brathwaite, Denesh Ramdin (wicketkeeper), Ashley Nurse, Sulieman Benn, Sunil Narine, Jerome Taylor, Shannon Gabriel.South Africa - AB de Villiers (captain), Hashim Amla, Faf du Plessis, Rilee Roussouw, Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), JP Duminy, Farhaan Behardien, Wayne Parnell, Chris Morris, Kyle Abbott, Aaron Phangiso, Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi, Morne Morkel.Australia - Steven Smith (captain), David Warner, Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, George Bailey, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper), James Faulkner, Mitchell Marsh, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood.
