Oil jumps on easing Brexit fears, weaker dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices jumped again Monday in volatile markets thanks to rising expectations that Britain would vote to remain in the European Union this week, pushing the dollar lower.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery leaped $1.39 to $49.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August, the global benchmark for crude oil, finished at $50.65 a barrel, up $1.48 from Fridays settlement. The petroleum markets have extended Fridays gains on a further downgrading of the risk that Britain will vote to leave the European Union in Thursdays referendum, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Recent polls in Britain showed the Remain camp gaining ground against Leave supporters, putting the race neck-and-neck just three days before the referendum. In a strong Brexit relief rally, global stock markets surged higher and the US dollar weakened Monday. The combination of those factors were helping to drive a boost in crude oil prices as investors swung back into riskier assets, Evans said.A generally weaker US currency made dollar-priced oil cheaper for buyers using other currencies.News about lower Norway oil production also helped support the market plagued by abundant supplies. You have reports up this morning that Norwegian production is going to be down over 200,000 barrels per day in June, said Bob Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA.

Pound soars on easing Brexit fears

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The pound soared against the dollar and euro Monday on easing fears that Britain will vote to break with the European Union, as recent polls showed growing support for staying in the EU.Todays rally for the pound could be just the tip of the iceberg if Britain should vote to remain in the EU, an outcome that would remove a substantial amount of uncertainty that for months has weighed on the UK currency, said Joe Manimbo of Western Union Business Solutions.Three days before the critical referendum, the pound jumped 2.3 percent to $1.4675. It surged roughly two percent to 77.08 pence per euro.Analysts cautioned that sentiment on Brexit likely would be volatile amid the heated rivalry of the campaigns, with the leave and remain camps running neck-and-neck, according to poll results released over the weekend. The dollar meanwhile weakened against the yen as well.Markets will also be on the watch for Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellens semiannual monetary policy report to Congress on Tuesday and Wednesday. The US central bank stood pat on policy last Wednesday in part due to Brexit concerns, and lowered its path for US rate hikes.Chair Yellen may largely endorse a wait-and-see approach amid the uncertainties clouding the economic outlook, and more of the same from the central bank head may encourage market participants to push out bets for the next rate hike, said David Song at DailyFX.

Mathews shocked by Eranga heart scare

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has spoken of the shock he felt when Shaminda Eranga suffered a heart scare in Ireland.Saturday saw Eranga come out to face the final ball of Sri Lankas innings in the second one-day international against Ireland in Malahide, but he did not bowl after feeling unwell in the interval and being taken to a Dublin hospital with what was later confirmed as an elevated heartbeat.Sri Lanka won the fixture by 136 runs for a 2-0 series win over the Irish that set them up nicely for a five-match ODI series against England starting at Nottinghams Trent Bridge ground on Tuesday. But a miserable weekend for Eranga was compounded when the International Cricket Council announced on Sunday that he would miss the England series in any event after being found to have an illegal bowling action. The nature of Erangas illness is similar to that which forced the early retirement of England batsman James Taylor in April, although there is no suggestion that Erangas heart problem could end his career. For Mathews, Erangas illness was a bolt from the blue.He was warming up -- and just before we went on the field, he said something happened to me, can you touch my heart because it is beating fast?, Mathews told reporters at Trent Bridge on Monday.I felt something unusual, so I quickly called the physio (who) went for the doctor with him. It was a shocking incident.Hes (still) undergoing those tests (for) an elevated heartbeat.Last years World Cup saw Sri Lanka thrash England by nine wickets in Wellington. But Eoin Morgans men have improved greatly as a white-ball side since the World Cup and earlier this year made it to the final of the World Twenty20 in India, where they were beaten in a last-over thriller by the West Indies.I dont know if its a springboard, but its certainly a huge confidence-booster, said England limited-overs captain Morgan.Hopes are growing that Morgans team will be able to put up an improved showing in front of their own supporters at the 2019 World Cup in England.Theres a bit more expectation on us as a side, and its important to relish that expectation, the Irishman added. Were still at the beginning of building for what we hope will be a successful campaign in the 2019 World Cup.

India level T20 with 10-wicket Zimbabwe win

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - India bounced back from their chastening defeat to Zimbabwe over the weekend to thump the hosts by 10 wickets in the second Twenty20 international at Harare Sports Club on Monday and level the three-match series at 1-1.Zimbabwes unexpected two-run victory in Saturdays opener had suggested they might have turned a corner after a hopeless performance in the one-day series, in which they were whitewashed 3-0.But on Monday they reverted to type with another feeble batting performance, scoring 99 for nine as India seamers Barinder Sran and Jasprit Bumrah shared seven wickets. In reply, Indias openers KL Rahul and Mandeep Singh took advantage of a couple of dropped catches to knock off the target in just 13.1 overs. Obviously (Saturday) defeat was hurting, but we discussed a few points of what we needed to do, and I think we implemented them really well today, said Singh.Zimbabwes batsmen had led the way in victory, but on Monday they never got going as Sran picked up four wickets in seven deliveries to reduce the hosts to 28 for four.Bumrah did the damage at the back of the innings, as he dismissed top scorer Peter Moor for 31 and danger man Elton Chigumbura for eight to record figures of 3 for 11.Sran finished with 4 for 10 from his four overs - the second best figures by a bowler on Twenty20 international debut. The shot selection is something that myself and Lance Klusener are forever trying to correct, said Zimbabwe interim coach Makhaya Ntini, who confirmed he was interested in taking the job on a full-time basis. We need to give them the understanding that you dont win a game or score a hundred from one shot. If someone gets out before you, you need to be the one who takes charge of the game and correct the mistake that the other one has made.Faced with such a meagre target Indias openers had time to play themselves in, but it did not take long for the boundaries to start flowing.Singh was dropped twice in his innings, and went on to finish unbeaten on 52 while Rahul was 47 not out.The wicket wasnt easy for shot-making because the ball was keeping low a little, said Singh. At the start I was trying to hit hard, because I generally play aggressively, but I watched Rahul and he asked me to calm down a little and try to time the ball. Slowly I controlled the nerves and then I was fine. The series decider takes place at the same venue on Wednesday.

Syria journalists still at risk in host countries: RSF

Posted:

BEIRUT, June 20, 2016 (AFP) - Syrian journalists who have sought refuge in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey remain in danger despite having fled war and hostility in their homeland, a media rights watchdog said Monday. Both local and foreign journalists are considered legitimate targets in Syria, where regime forces, rebels, jihadists and Kurds are fighting over a country ripped apart by five years of conflict. Those who have escaped Syria face oppression from the authorities in their host countries as well as other types of predator, said Reporters Without Borders.Hundreds of professional and non-professional journalists have fled the country because they were exposed to both targeted persecution and the conflicts extreme violence, said the watchdog known by its French acronym RSF.Many of them face constant difficulties and continue to fear for their safety in the countries in which they seek refuge, it said. The RSF report was based on interviews with 24 Syrian journalists living in exile in neighbouring countries. They found themselves in different sets of circumstances than they had experienced at home, especially in terms of regulations and living and working conditions, and they faced threats coming both from inside and outside their host country, it said.As well as those threats and occasionally fatal attacks, RSF said authorities had restricted journalists rights to move freely, choose their place of residence or leave the country and return.Their rights to protection are compromised, and they dont have equal access to legal protection. They are subject to work exploitation and servitude. They can be arbitrarily arrested, detained or sent back to Syria, it said.An official and legal recognition of Syrian journalists and their journalistic work in these countries could spare them many of these violations and threats, as well as provide legal and administrative framework for their activity. The Islamic State group has killed at least 27 journalists since 2013, with at least 11 others missing and feared dead, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.RSF says at least 51 professional and 144 non-professional journalists have been killed since the start of the conflict in 2011.A further 50 are currently detained in government jails, held hostage by IS or other extremist armed groups, or have simply disappeared.

UN chief to meet Saudi prince amid Yemen row

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS, United States, June 20, 2016 (AFP) - UN chief Ban Ki-moon will meet with Saudi Arabias deputy crown prince Mohammed bin Salman Wednesday as the world body and Riyadh lock horns over the conflict in Yemen. The two are to meet at midday at UN headquarters in New York, said Bans deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq, who gave no details of their agenda.Tensions flared recently when the UN briefly blacklisted the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, after an expert report found it responsible for 60 percent of the 785 children killed in the country last year. The blacklisting infuriated Saudis, and the UN removed the coalition from the list pending a fact review.Ban went on to publicly accuse Riyadh -- a major UN donor -- and its allies of financial blackmail, saying they threatened to cut off funds to certain UN agencies, including a Palestinian aid program.Saudi Arabia has rejected both those charges and the reports findings. The Riyadh-led military intervention is supporting the Yemeni government in its fight against Iran-allied Huthi Shiite rebels, primarily through air strikes that began in March 2015.The Saudi government has requested that the UN send a team of experts to the coalition headquarters in Riyadh to jointly review the report and for the UN to provide details on its sources and methods. The UN has not yet responded to the invitation and has indicated that any such meetings should take place in New York.Prince Mohammed holds great sway in the Saudi hierarchy, and also serves as the countrys defense minister. He met Friday with US President Barack Obama, as well as Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew and CIA Director John Brennan.President Obama praised Saudi efforts to reach a political agreement to end conflict in Yemen.

Paris soaked by wettest spring in 150 years

Posted:

PARIS, June 20, 2016 (AFP) - Parisians, never ones to suffer in silence, have had good cause to grumble of late: meteorologists confirmed Monday it has been the wettest spring in the French capital in nearly 150 years. The news came on the final day of spring, which, after weeks and weeks of grey skies and pouring rain, fittingly ended with an hours-long downpour in Paris.Usually, after a long winter, Parisians flood parks and the outdoors to soak up some much-needed spring sun, quaffing wine on the banks of the Seine or sipping cocktails on restaurant terraces. But this year, with the summer solstice on Tuesday, it is still boots and coats for most Parisians, who have only seen the sun peek through the clouds a handful of times. The French meteorological agency Meteo-France said the three months of rain (320 mm) were double the normal amount, and the most since records began in 1873.In early June, residents watched in awe as the Seine river rose to its highest level in three decades, prompting the closure of the riverside Louvre and Orsay museums while they evacuated priceless artworks. The flooding which saw rescuers rowing canoes through towns around Paris, caused around one billion euros in damages, the AFA insurance association said on Friday.Several other French towns also saw record rainfall, which Meteo-France forecaster Etienne Kapikian attributed to more low atmospheric pressure systems than usual in central and western Europe. While summer will arrive for a day or two this week, storms and lower temperatures will follow. There is no generalised, sunny weather expected for the moment, said Kapikian.

China's Xi weaves Poland into 'new silk road' plan

WARSAW, June 20, 2016 (AFP) - The presidents of China and Poland greeted a Chinese freight train as it rolled into the Polish capital on Monday, part of a drive to drum up business between the Asian giant and the European Unions largest eastern economy.Chinas Xi Jinping and his Polish counterpart Andrzej Duda were on hand as the China Railway Express ended its 13-day journey from Chengdu, capital of central Sichuan province.Experts say Warsaw wants to use the rail link with China launched in 2013 to correct a chronic bilateral trade imbalance by exporting more farm products like milk, meat and apples.Poland is Chinas largest trade partner in the eastern EU and in 2015 bilateral trade reached $17.1 billion (15.2 billion euros), according to Chinese figures. The rail link -- one of the worlds longest -- is part of Chinas new silk road for trade with Europe and is touted as a revival of the ancient Silk Road trade route.Around 20 freight trains run between China and Poland each week carrying electronics, food stuffs, alcohol and car parts, according to Polands PKP state railways. The journey takes 11-14 days, a fraction of the 40-50 day transit by sea.Xi and Duda also bit into rosy Polish apples as they greeted the train. One of the EUs leading apple producers, Poland has been hit hard by a Russian import ban on the fruit, levelled in retaliation for EU sanctions on Moscow following its 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Thanks to deals sealed during Xis visit, Poland can now start exporting apples to China.- Multi-billion sums -=========================Poland is also eyeing financing by the Asian giant.Xi and Duda inked a broad strategic partnership deal on political and economic cooperation, part of Beijings much vaunted efforts of establishing land and sea links for European trade, known as the Belt and Road policy.Chinas head of state urged Poland to fully take advantage of its position as a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) to do business.Launched by China in January, the AIIB includes several European countries among its members, but the United States and Japan declined to join. Some view it as a rival to the World Bank.Calling the AIIB the worlds largest investment fund, Polish Deputy Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki told reporters that Warsaw was discussing massive investments with Beijing. It is certainly still too early to say weve reached some kind of conclusion, he said, revealing only that multi-billion sums were involved.Warsaws drive for closer ties with Beijing is rooted in its need for capital and export markets beyond Europe, because of the upcoming decrease in EU funds and saturation of the European market, said Justyna Szczudlik, an analyst with the Warsaw-based Polish Institute of International Affairs.- Lack of spectacular investment -====================================Xi, who is on a three-nation tour, and Duda attended the New Silk Road Forum 2016, an international trade fair bringing together Chinese and European entrepreneurs.Polands Deputy Development Minister Radoslaw Domagalski said Warsaw was prepared to set up special investment zones as gateways for Chinese capital into Poland.A nation of 38 million people, Poland remains one of the EUs most vibrant economies, clocking uninterrupted annual growth since it shed communism in 1989. GDP is set to expand by around 3.7 percent this year and next.Chinese activity in central and eastern Europe is rooted in the 161 Forum for cooperation between 16 ex-communist eastern European states and China, launched in 2012 in Warsaw. At the time, Beijing vowed to commit a total of $10.5 billion in credit lines and funds to boost economic ties with the region, but analysts say the capital injections have been slow to materialise.According to Polands PAIZ foreign investment agency chief Bartlomiej Pawlak there are currently around 900 companies with Chinese capital registered in Poland, but he admits that so far, there has been a lack of spectacular Chinese investment.
