US lawmakers probing Orlando shooter's Facebook posts

Posted:

ORLANDO, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - A top US lawmaker said Thursday authorities were probing the Facebook activity of the Orlando nightclub shooter, after an investigation found Omar Mateen made extremist posts during the massacre and searched for news of his attack.Ron Johnson, the Republican chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security, sent a letter to Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg Wednesday asking the company to share specifics of five accounts apparently used by Mateen.Lawmakers are trying to determine if there are ways for intelligence and law enforcement communities to monitor social media platforms like Facebook so that we can prevent these tragedies, Johnson told CNN on Thursday. This is our job, to see what has happened in the past, what can we possibly do to prevent this from occurring in the future and how can we find bipartisan solutions, the Republican said.Mateen killed 49 people and wounded 53 in his shooting spree early Sunday at the Pulse gay nightclub in the Florida resort city of Orlando. Authorities have said he was apparently radicalized after watching jihadist propaganda online. In his letter to Zuckerberg, Johnson said Mateen apparently posted sometime during the attack that he was pledging allegiance to the Islamic State groups leader, and America and Russia stop bombing the Islamic state. He also allegedly posted: The real muslims will never accept the filthy ways of the west and In the next few days you will see attacks from the Islamic state in the usa.Mateen also allegedly searched for Pulse Orlando and Shooting, Johnson said.A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the company has received the senators letter, which asked Facebook to provide investigators with details of Mateens Facebook accounts and activity. She said Facebook had not yet responded to the request but has been working with law enforcement from the outset of the investigation. Also Thursday, CNN reported that Mateens wife suspected he was going to carry out an attack that night, even though he told her he was going out to see a friend. When the news of the shooting broke, 30-year-old Noor Mateen called him frantically, CNN said, citing unidentified sources. He didnt pick up, but texted her about 4 am asking if she had seen the news. She responded: I love you, the report said.Authorities have refused to comment on reports that Mateens wife would face charges over her alleged knowledge of Mateens intentions to carry out an attack.

US senate to vote on gun control as Trump softens stance

Posted:

WASHINGTON, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Democrats claimed victory Thursday after persuading the US Senate to hold a vote next week on legislation that would bar terror suspects from buying firearms. The debate -- with the potential to turn vicious in a contentious presidential election year -- comes with Republican White House hopeful Donald Trump signaling he could back moves to prevent people on terror watch lists or no-fly lists from buying guns. The possible breakthrough in the Republican-controlled Senate could end a years-long logjam on how to reduce US gun violence, following last weekends massacre of 49 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida -- the deadliest mass shooting in US history.Senate Democrats brought their pressure to bear by mounting a 15-hour marathon focused on reducing gun violence. With support from a small number of Republicans, Democrats have questioned how a man investigated for suspected extremist ties and who previously figured on an FBI watch list was able to commit mass murder with a legally purchased assault rifle. They got a strong boost from President Barack Obama who met Thursday with relatives of the Orlando victims, and urged lawmakers to rise to the moment and do the right thing. It will be a tall order: Republicans largely oppose legislation that would limit gun rights in any way.We dont take away citizens rights without due process, House Speaker Paul Ryan told reporters Thursday. And so if you have a quick idea in the heat of the moment that says lets take away a persons rights without their due process, were going to stand up and defend the Constitution. The Democratic filibuster, which started Wednesday and ended early Thursday, was led by Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut.Im going to remain on this floor until we get some signal, some sign that we can come together.Murphy and other went well past midnight discussing ways to reduce gun violence -- a tactic that eventually prompted leaders to schedule a vote on gun measures.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnells office said votes on Democratic and Republican amendments will begin Monday, including on Democratic Senator Dianne Feinsteins no-fly, no buy amendment, under which people on US terror watch lists or no-fly lists would be barred from acquiring firearms.Similar legislation failed last December, with all but one Senate Republican voting no.Also getting a vote are measures that would extend background checks to sales at gun shows and on the Internet.Despite the broad support such measures enjoy from most Americans, they remain controversial in Congress, and passage is seen as being unlikely in the toxic 2016 election climate.- Trump and NRA -=================Meanwhile Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, made waves Wednesday when he tweeted that he would meet with the National Rifle Association about not allowing people on the terrorist watch list, or the no fly list, to buy guns. The shift may put Trump on a collision course with the powerful NRA, which has said that restrictions like bans on gun purchases by people on watch lists are ineffective, unconstitutional or both. But on Wednesday it said it would meet with Trump, and suggested in a statement it would be open to changes in the law to prevent certain gun purchases.Trumps Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton said she supports the limits pushed by Murphy.Surely we can agree, if the FBI is watching you for suspected terrorist links, you should not be able to buy a gun with no questions asked, Clinton said. The renewed push comes after a US government report showed that known terror suspects have passed background checks for gun sales 91 percent of the time since 2004.I do think our filibuster made a difference, Murphy told CBS television.Lets be honest. The Senate was not going to debate these measures, had no plans to talk about ending gun violence this week on the floor of the Senate, Murphy said.Among the Republicans who appear to be giving the measure support is Congressman Bob Dold, who is facing a tough re-election fight in Illinois.Thoughts and prayers are not enough, Dold said this week on te House floor. Its time for action.

Tennis: Kvitova, Wozniacki slip and slide out of Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Petra Kvitova, the two-time Wimbledon champion who has been hoping to build her grass court momentum for a third tilt at the oldest Grand Slam title, instead became the latest big name to lose at the rain-hit Birmingham WTA tournament on Thursday.Moving gingerly on the lush surface, Kvitova subsided to a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 second round loss to Jelena Ostapenko, the world number 38.Erasing a 0-2 deficit in the decider visibly encouraged the 19-year-old Latvian, who pressed harder, hit flatter, and often played the big points better. It was difficult to put the pressure on her, said Kvitova, who played with her right thigh strapped. When she dropped serve she became more dangerous. And I wasnt moving very well today. At the beginning (of the grass court season) it is really difficult for the body. I dont know that I did anything wrong. But at least I played two matches here, and I hope to get more at Eastbourne (next week).Neither player was helped by a slightly late start and a 40-minute interruption in the middle of the match, both caused by incessant showers which have blighted the tournament for four days.Perhaps unsurprisingly it was the younger player who proved more resilient in dealing with it all.The most crucial moments came immediately after Kvitova had broken serve to level at a set all, and then surged into a 2-0 lead in the decider. She followed it with a poor game, failing to land her first serve frequently enough and then playing an even more disappointingly in the seventh game, delivering a double fault and dropping her serve to love. She earned a break back point in the following game but was denied by a brilliant forehand from Ostapenko and after that the match ended swiftly.Id beaten her before, said Ostapenko, referring to a victory on hard courts in Doha in the first week of the year.So I thought I could do it again. She next plays Madison Keys, the top 20 American for a place in the semi-finals.Kvitova was followed to the exit door by Caroline Wozniacki, the former world number one, was who beaten 6-4, 6-7 (5/7), 6-2 by Yanina Wickmayer, ranked down at 49 but a former finalist in Birmingham.Wozniacki has also been struggling with injuries in recent weeks, and had moments when she appeared concerned not to aggravate them in a match that was interrupted three times by the weather. Two other seeds, Angelique Kerber, the Australian Open champion, and Carla Suarez Navarro were also struggling when rain ended play early for the fourth day in a row.Kvitovas and Wozniackis exits followed those on earlier days of Agnieszka Radwanska, the top seed, of Belinda Bencic, the youngest world top ten player, and Karolina Pliskova, the eighth-seeded Czech who won the title on the Nottingham grass last week

Tennis: Murray sets all British Quarterfinal in Queen's Club

Posted:

LONDON, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Andy Murray set up the first all-British Queens Club quarter-final in the Open era as the defending champion cruised to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over another compatriot, Aljaz Bedene on Thursday.Murray will face British wildcard Kyle Edmund for a place in the semi-finals after brushing aside Bedene in the second round of the Wimbledon warm-up event. The last time two British players contested an ATP Tour quarter-final was in Adelaide in 2002 when Tim Henman defeated Greg Rusedski 6-4, 6-4.It wasnt bad. Im still getting used to the conditions a bit but I played well, Murray said. The British thing had no bearing on it. Its good the British players are doing well and Im happy there are more Brits at the bigger events. I had a feeling I would play one here.Kyle Edmund is improving all the time -- its not one massive leap but every year he gets a bit better.Murray is bidding for a record fifth Queens crown and the world number two took just 83 minutes to extend his fine career record in west London to 27-5 and book a sixth appearance in the Queens last eight. The 29-year-old Scot, who resumed his partnership with coach Ivan Lendl this week after a two-year separation, next takes on Davis Cup team-mate Edmund, who was given a walkover into the quarter-finals after his French opponent Paul-Henri Mathieu pulled out with a wrist problem. The promising South Africa-born 21-year-old had enjoyed the best win of his career on Wednesday when he defeated French world number 18 Gilles Simon in the first round. While there was another more high-profile Battle of Britain going on across the English Channel in France, where England and Wales clashed in Euro 2016, there was plenty at stake for Murray.

Roger Federer reaches Quarterfinal in Halle

Posted:

HALLE , Germany, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Roger Federer warmed up for Wimbledon by easing to victory in the second round on the Halle grass on Thursday, as he returns from a back injury that has disrupted his season. The world number three, who dropped out of last months French Open, had little trouble swatting aside Tunisias Malek Jaziri, 6-3, 7-5, and next faces Belgiums David Goffin.Federer, who is in the twilight of a sparkling career and turns 35 in August, is chasing a ninth title in Halle, Germany. He has yet to win a title in 2016, his longest drought to start a year since he went title-less in 2000.I thought he was reading my serve throughout the first set. So, I started to serve a little bit different in the second set. I was having more success that way, said Federer who will be playing in a 14th Halle quarter-final.I was happy to come through a tough match because I thought hes tough to play against. I struggled to read his technique, the way he gets into the ball I cant really tell where he goes and I remember that from the last time I played him in Dubai, I remembered there was something but not until I got on the court. So, it was tough. I think hes a good player.I wish I could have played maybe a bit better at times but I must put it down to my opponent keeping me off balance as well. He was doing a really nice job of making me feel uncomfortable for a while.Goffin set up the meeting with Federer after Ukraines Sergiy Stakhovsky retired from their clash when trailing 4-6, 7-5, 2-0.Federer leads Goffin 4-0 in their career head-to-heads, including a 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 win in this years Australian Open fourth round. Also into the next round is home hope Philipp Kohlschreiber, the eighth seed, who beat Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-7 (7/9), 6-4, 7-5.The indefatigable Kohlschreiber was playing for a 10th straight day.He won the Halle title in 2011 and next faces Austrian third seed Dominic Thiem who defeated Russias Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-1 for his 46th win of 2016.Thiem beat Kohlschreiber in the Stuttgart final on Monday.

Football: Stalemate edges Germany, Poland towards last 16

Posted:

PARIS, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Old rivals Germany and Poland fought a battle of attrition that ended in a goalless draw and edged both countries towards a place in the last 16 of Euro 2016 on Thursday. The stalemate left Germany on top of Group C on goal difference with both sides on four points from two matches.Polands Arkadiusz Milik had the best chance when he bundled the ball wide from point-blank range early in the second-half.Germanys Jerome Boateng complained that his side had been too rigid, but agreed that a draw was a fair result from a tightly contested encounter. We can be happy with the nil-nil, Boateng said, but he criticised his sides lack of attacking punch. We didnt take the game to our opponents, we werent dangerous enough and we have to improve that or we wont get far, he told ZDF.Weve now got to make sure we win the last group game so that we go through as group winners.Polands superstar Robert Lewandowski was kept quiet by his Bayern Munich teammate Boateng, but was content to hold the world champions. Were happy with the point. We showed Germany a bit too much respect in the first half, he said. Its a pity that we didnt get the goal, but thats football and its not a bad result for us.Their opponents will be Northern Ireland, whose 2-0 win over Ukraine earlier Thursday leaves Michael ONeills men just a point behind the leaders ahead of the final group game in Paris on Tuesday.Poland take on Ukraine in Marseille in their final pool match with a draw enough to seal their place in the knockout stages.Poland had only beaten Germany once in 20 previous meetings, but that came in qualifying for Euro 2016 and the Poles were full of confidence having won their first ever European Championship finals match against Northern Ireland on Sunday.- Return to night of trauma -=============================Germany were playing at the Stade de France for the first time since they were caught up in the November 13 militant attacks in Paris.Die Mannschaft were forced to spend a traumatic night in the dressing rooms at Frances national stadium when a series of jihadist attacks across Paris left 130 dead on a night they faced the French in a friendly. However, the emotional return did not seem to affect Joachim Loews side. They made by far the better start as Mario Goetze headed just over from Julian Draxlers cross, whilst Toni Kroos also failed to hit the target as he burst into the box.At the other end, Lewandowski was kept in close check by Boateng and the returning Mats Hummels -- playing in his first game for a month due to a calf injury.A drab end to the first-half was quickly forgotten by a fast start to the second period. The hordes of Polish supporters watched in amazement when on 48 minutes Milik -- scorer of the only goal against Northern Ireland -- somehow failed to turn home Kamil Grosickis dangerous cross from barely a metre out.Poland goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski was not forced into a save in the first-half as he deputised for the injured Wojciech Szczesny. However, the Swansea City stopper was finally called into action as Goetze fired straight at him when well-placed inside the area.Milik drove a well-worked free-kick just wide before Boateng produced a miraculous last-ditch challenge to deny Lewandowski as Poland began to look the more threatening.Ajax striker Milik fluffed his lines again when he failed to make a clean contact when picked out again by Grosicki inside the box.Yet, Fabianski then produced a stunning stop to turn Mesut Ozils fierce strike from the edge of the box over the bar.Loew introduced forwards Andre Schuerrle and Mario Gomez to bring more of a cutting edge to Germanys attacking play in the final quarter. But a lacklustre German display rarely looked like reaping all three points as they had to settle for a point.

Super-subs guide England, Northern Ireland to wins

Posted:

PARIS, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - Substitutes Jamie Vardy, Daniel Sturridge and Niall McGinn inspired England and Northern Ireland to dramatic wins over Wales and Ukraine at the European Championship finals on Thursday.World champions Germany ground out a goalless draw with Poland and were left wondering what put a spanner in their normally efficient goal machine despite a result that edged both sides to a place in the last 16.Vardy and Sturridge came on to score the goals that saw England to a 2-1 victory in the all-British battle against Wales and go top of Group B.Northern Ireland upset Ukraine 2-0 to win at a European Championship final for the first time and keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout stages from Group C.England fought back into their highly-charged game at Lens after Gareth Bale fire his side ahead with a second brilliant free kick goal in two games.Bales fierce 35-metre drive over the wall embarrassed Joe Hart in the England goal and gave Wales a 1-0 lead at the break.Coach Roy Hodgson sent on Vardy and Sturridge for the second half and England came alive.Sturridge dispatched a cross from the left that was knocked down and Vardy twisted to score his fourth international goal.In the 91st minute, Sturridge collected Dele Allis clever flick to steer a shot inside Wayne Hennesseys near post. That broke Welsh hearts just as England had suffered against Russia when they conceded a last-minute goal against Russia on Saturday.- Words of empathy -====================Its a long time since myself and the coaching staff have showed such joy at a goal. Thats because that goal the other night put us under a bit of pressure, said Hodgson, referring back to the Russia game. And after much needling between the two teams in the buildup, Hodgson also had words of sympathy for his Welsh opposite number Chris Coleman.I have great empathy with Chris and the Welsh team because he must have been looking at a good draw. He will be today as I was on Saturday night.Coleman believe Wales deserved more from the game. To lose like that was gut-wrenching for the players and supporters.England just need a draw against Slovakia on Monday to guarantee a place in the last 16. Wales must beat Russia at the same time to definitely take one of the top two places. A draw could be enough depending on Englands result. We are disappointed at the moment, but we are strong inside and the tournament is not over yet, Bale said.Veteran defender Gareth McAuleys header and McGinns goal in stoppage goal gave Northern Ireland a famous win over Ukraine.- First goal since 82 -========================It was Northern Irelands first win in international contest since they beat Spain at the 1982 World Cup -- and their first ever at a Euro tournament.West Bromwich Albions McAuley rose outstandingly to head home for his countrys first goal at an international tournament since that 1982 win.At 36 years and 194 days, he is the second oldest goalscorer at a Euro finals, after Ivica Vastic, who was two years, 63 days older when he converted a penalty for Austria against Poland at Euro 2008.A hailstorm halted play for three minutes and a Northern Ireland fan suffered a heart attack and died before McGinn came on and slammed home a rebound to complete the win.A draw against Germany next Tuesday could see Michael ONeills side into the next round. We have given ourselves a great chance of qualifying, beamed Northern Irelands manager ONeill. There are still a lot of ramifications in this group, but we wanted to go into the last game with something realistic to play for.Germany and Poland lead Group C on four points but their goalless draw at Stade de France did not settle their recent battle for superiority.Drawn against each other in the qualifying group, each won one match.Polands Arkadiusz Milik had the best chance of the latest clash when he bundled the ball wide from point-blank range early in the second-half.But German players complained that their attack had let them down.We didnt take the game to our opponents, we werent dangerous enough and we have to improve that or we wont get far, said defender Jerome Boateng.Something was missing up front which we need in order to create good chances, added midfielder Toni Kroos. We did well in defence. We need to be on the ball and we have to win the last group game in order to finish first, then well have to see.

British lawmaker killed in shock attack before EU vote

Posted:

LONDON, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - A British lawmaker was killed in a shock daylight street attack on Thursday, throwing campaigning for the referendum on Britains EU membership into disarray just a week before the crucial vote.Jo Cox, a 41-year-old mother-of-two from the opposition Labour Party, was left bleeding on the pavement after reportedly being shot and stabbed in the village of Birstall in northern England, according to witnesses quoted by local media.Police later announced the death of Cox, a campaigner for Britain to remain in the European Union.Officers said a 52-year-old man had been arrested and a firearm had been recovered from the scene. This was a localised incident, albeit one which has a wider impact, West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson told reporters.Cox, a former aid worker, was only elected to parliament last year but had already made her name campaigning for the government to do more to aid Syrian refugees and for Britain to stay in the EU.After the attack, the Remain camp said it was suspending all campaigning for Thursday and Friday while a spokesman for the rival Vote Leave group said their battle bus was returning to headquarters.Prime Minister David Cameron cancelled a planned rally during a historic but controversial visit to Gibraltar as part of his campaign for Britain to remain in the EU in the June 23 vote.Weve lost a great star. She was a great, campaigning MP with huge compassion, with a big heart, Cameron said in televised remarks. On a visit to Copenhagen, US Secretary of State John Kerry said: It is an assault on everybody who cares about and has faith in democracy, he added. Her husband Brendan wrote: Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life.Over parliament the British flag flew at half-mast.The human rights campaign group Avaaz called for a vigil outside the Houses of Parliament and a church in Birstall also said it was planning a commemoration later on Thursday.- Three shots -===============Grieving local residents laid flowers to near the scene of the attack as police forensic officers were seen examining a shoe and a handbag in a cordoned-off area. One witness, local cafe owner Clarke Rothwell, said that Cox had been shot three times. He shot this lady once and then he shot her again, he fell to the floor, leant over shot her once more in the face area, he told the BBC.Sky News television quoted unconfirmed reports that the shooter shouted Britain first. He was named by British media as local man Tommy Mair. The attack halted a frantic day of campaigning, as two new opinion polls indicated that more Britons now want to leave the EU than want to stay.If they prove correct, Britain would become the first state in the nearly six-decade history of the bloc to leave.- Difficult to be optimistic -================================The looming prospect of a Brexit has sparked volatility in the financial markets and sent the pound plunging, and prompted interventions from a number of EU leaders.I know its very difficult for us to be optimistic today, we know the latest polls, EU President Donald Tusk said on a visit to Helsinki. But he added: The EU will survive, I have no doubt -- it is still much easier to survive when you are 27 member states than completely alone. At an economic forum in Russia, European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker also said: I dont think that the European Union will be in danger of death if Britain leaves because we continue the process of closer cooperation in Europe.German Chancellor Angela Merkel used a press conference in Berlin to urge Britain to stay. She said that in the event of a Brexit, everything related to the common market, and to the mutual benefit to Britain and all other European member states, would no longer be available to Britain.- Too close to call -=====================A new survey by Ipsos Mori showed support for leaving the EU now stands at 53 percent compared to 47 percent for those who want to stay in, excluding undecided voters.Another new poll by Survation put Leave ahead by 52-48, excluding undecided voters.Polling expert John Curtice said the race was now too close to call, telling the BBC: I think we no longer have a favourite in this referendum.Londons FTSE 100 share index fell 1.1 percent to 5,899, before recovering somewhat to end the day 0.27 percent lower at 5,950.The pound hit a new two-month low against the euro.Leading business newspaper the Financial Times endorsed the Remain camp, saying Britain had benefited from its 43-year membership of the European fold and leaving would seriously damage the economy.A vote to withdraw would be irrevocable, a grievous blow to the post-1945 liberal world order, it added.

Man arrested for 'planning attack' on tourists in France

Posted:

PARIS, June 16, 2016 (AFP) - A radicalised convert to Islam has been arrested in France for allegedly planning to attack American and Russian tourists at a popular medieval site, legal sources said Thursday.News of the arrest came as the country reeled from yet another terror attack, after an extremist pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group killed a policeman and his partner at their home in the Paris suburb of Magnanville on Monday.A judicial source said the 22-year-old suspect was arrested on Monday night in southern Carcassonne where he had gone to carry out a violent act, in particular targeting Americans and Russians. He had in his possession a knife and a small mallet, the source said. The suspect comes from the southern French town of Lunel -- notorious for the number of residents who have left to wage jihad in Syria -- but had been living in the nearby Tarn region.France has been under a state of emergency since Islamic State gunmen and suicide bombers struck Paris in November, killing 130.And terror fears have been heightened by the presence of hundreds of thousands of fans for the month-long Euro 2016 football championship. In Mondays assault, 25-year-old Larossi Abballa, who had served time for links to jihadist networks, killed 42-year-old police commander Jean-Baptiste Salvaing outside his home in Magnanville. He then entered the house, taking Salvaings 36-year-old partner Jessica Schneider and the couples three-year-old son hostage, before slitting her throat.Schneider was an employee of the police station where her partner worked.Abballa was later killed in a police raid on the house, where officers found the little boy traumatised but unhurt.Just before the raid, Abballa streamed a live video on Facebook of himself inside the house with the toddler, urging other surprises and pledging to turn the Euro into a graveyard.Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said police had found a hit list at the scene of the attack naming police, rappers and journalists.Abballa, from Mantes-la-Jolie, told police negotiators before his death that he had sworn loyalty to IS three weeks earlier.A crowd of some 2,500 people -- including officers in plain clothes -- marched in silence on Thursday to honour the slain couple, many weeping openly.Three associates of Abballa were arrested over the attack, and their detention was on Thursday extended for another 48 hours, a legal source told AFP.Two of the suspects, aged 27 and 29, were convicted alongside Abballa in 2013 over ties to a network recruiting jihadists for Pakistan. At the time, Abballa was sentenced to three years in prison. The French attack came a day after another lone wolf pledging support to IS gunned down 49 people in Orlando, Florida, highlighting the difficulty in tracking those inspired by the jihadists from afar.French Prime Minister Manuel Valls said Wednesday that a lone wolf attack was hard to prevent and more attacks were likely to follow.More innocent people will lose their lives. Its very hard to say this... but unfortunately it is the truth, he said.French President Francois Hollande will on Friday preside over an official memorial service in honour of the murdered couple.
