Football: England, Wales set sights on last 16

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - England and Wales will aim to cement their places in the knockout phase of Euro 2016 on Monday as all four Group B sides remain in with a realistic chance of reaching the last 16.England, thanks to Daniel Sturridges stoppage-time winner against Wales, lead the group on four points with Chris Colemans men and Slovakia one point further back.Russia have looked distinctly unimpressive so far, but they too are still in contention despite propping up the standings with just a single point.England face Slovakia in Saint-Etienne knowing that a draw would send them through to the next round, with a victory guaranteeing top spot and a last-16 game in Paris.England coach Roy Hodgson was forced to reshuffle his pack after Gareth Bales free-kick fired Wales ahead in their second group game in Lens, with substitutes Jamie Vardy and Sturridge bailing him out in a dramatic 2-1 victory.Premier League top-scorer Harry Kane and winger Raheem Sterling, both of whom have struggled to replicate their top form in France, were hooked at half-time at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis.And while Hodgson has decisions to make about his starting line-up, he may not be inclined to make drastic changes against a Slovakia side counting once more on Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik.I think the players are in good shape and I dont think it will be a problem if I keep the same side, but I do have the options if I want to make changes, Hodgson told reporters on Sunday.Real Madrid star Bale will try to exploit an ageing Russian back line when Wales play their final group game in Toulouse.Bale has scored two of his countrys three goals, both directly from free-kicks, and the 26-year-old insisted his team-mates remain in high spirits despite the crushing nature of their last-gasp defeat to England. We have to forget about it. Its over. Our fate is in our own hands, and if youd given us this at the start of the tournament we would have taken it, said Bale.Wales will book their place in the last 16 with a victory, but a draw could also be sufficient to see the tournament debutants advance.Manager Chris Coleman echoed Bales optimism and believes Wales can keep their fans dreaming for some time yet after reaching their first major tournament finals since the 1958 World Cup.Look where we are, were in a fantastic position. Were at our first major tournament, weve got the chance to progress. Our players have done unbelievably well, he said.Russia must beat Wales to avoid a third straight group stage exit at a major tournament. They may have to do without Oleg Shatov who is nursing a groin injury, but Leonid Slutsky hinted at a start for Denis Glushakov after the midfielder came off the bench to score in the 2-1 defeat to Slovakia on Wednesday.

Golf: Johnson wins US Open despite penalty confusion

Posted:

OAKMONT (AFP) - Dustin Johnson shook off the specter of a potential penalty controversy, leaving no room for doubt in his first major victory at the US Open at Oakmont. With just one stroke separating Johnson from Shane Lowry atop the leaderboard, the US Golf Association informed Johnson he could be assessed a penalty after the round for an infraction on the fifth green.Johnsons ball moved slightly as he prepared to putt for par. He spoke with a rules official and it was determined he did not cause the ball to move so no penalty was assessed at the time. But with the title chase at its peak, Johnson and his nearest rivals on the course were informed that USGA officials planned to review video of the incident again after his round. It was yet another major complication for Johnson, the world number six who has endured a string of near misses in golfs biggest events, including a three-putt at the 72nd hole of last years US Open that handed the title to Jordan Spieth. But he kept his focus, and as Lowry faded with three late bogeys the entire matter became less pressing.Johnson finished with a flourish, calmly draining a nine-foot par putt at 17 and a short birdie putt at the final hole. When a penalty was indeed assessed, he still owned a winning margin of three strokes. The USGAs handling of the matter caused a stir on social media, with pro golfers weighing in.This is ridiculous... No penalty whatsoever for DJ. Let the guy play without this crap in his head. Amateur hour from @USGA, tweeted Rory McIlroy, who missed the cut at Oakmont.Spieth, who finished his fourth round earlier, added: Lemme get this straight.. DJ doesnt address it. Its ruled that he didnt cause it to move. Now you tell him he may have? Now? This a joke?PGA Tour pro Brandt Snedeker tweeted: Hey @USGA, its impossible for DJ to cause the ball to move backwards commonsense.World number one Jason Day, who finished tied for eighth six shots behind Johnson, said he couldnt fault officials for informing Johnson that the penalty could be assessed.Id probably rather know. I like to know where Im at on the leaderboard.

Formula One: Rosberg wins European Grand Prix

Posted:

BAKU (AFP) - Nico Rosberg increased his lead in the drivers championship when he returned to winning ways with a smoothly comfortable lights-to-flag victory for Mercedes in Sundays European Grand Prix. The 30-year-old German, who had seen his advantage cut to nine points after three poor races, came home comfortably clear of second-placed compatriot Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. His Mercedes team-mate and defending champion Lewis Hamilton came home a frustrated fifth after a race dogged by technical problems on the tricky new Baku street circuit as Azerbaijan hosted its maiden Formula One race. After two successive wins had lifted him back into contention for a fourth title, Hamilton slipped back to 24 points behind Rosberg whose return to form brought him his 19th career victory.Four-time champion Vettel took full advantage of an off-form day for Red Bull and drove steadily to finish ahead of Sergio Perez of Force India who passed Kimi Raikkonen in the second Ferrari on the final lap.Valtteri Bottas finished sixth for Williams ahead of Australian Daniel Ricciardo and his Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen with Nico Hulkenberg ninth for Force India and Felipe Massa 10th in the second Williams.Rosberg now has 141 points in the title race and Hamilton 117.The weekend went perfectly for me, an awesome day, said Rosberg. An incredible circuit, said Vettel. High speed corners and very close -- and for us, a great recovery and now Ive had two second places in a row. We are coming along ok now.Perez said: Yesterday, when I hit the wall in qualifying I was very frustrated with myself, but the team did a great job to repair the car.And today after starting from P7 it was a fight all the way. It was very nice to take Kimi on the last lapOn a hot afternoon, with a track temperature of 49 degrees Celsius, the race began without major drama, Rosberg pulling clear at the start ahead of Ricciardo once his car kicked into acceleration.Hamilton held steady in tenth for two laps before swiftly rising to eighth before the first round of pit-stops.Rosberg built a lead of nine seconds in the opening six laps as Ricciardo followed Verstappen into the pits, switching from super-softs to softs. On lap 11, Hamilton finally squeezed past Bottas under braking at Turn One to take fourth. His battle with the Finn was costly and he was 24 seconds adrift of Rosberg who led Vettel with Perez third and Hamilton chasing. The champion complained of brake problems and vibrations before pitting after 16 laps -- going to softs -- and rejoining ninth. Rosberg, in clean air at the front, was in supreme control, 20 seconds clear by lap 18.Perez pitted to match Hamiltons strategy and rejoined eighth in front of the Englishman shortly before Vettel and then, finally, Rosberg came in.The power advantage of the Mercedes engine was apparent as Rosberg rejoined in the lead ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton following Perez past Ricciardo on the long straight.By lap 23, following the pit-stops, Rosberg was 19 seconds clear of the Finn, followed by Vettel, Perez and Hamilton. Not only down on power, the Red Bull men were also struggling with their tyres and both drivers pitted again, to switch to mediums, Ricciardo rejoining 13th.Hamiltons surge was slowed but due to a ban on radio instructions, Mercedes were not allowed to help him, as he grew more and more frustrated and irritated by looking at my frickin dash every five seconds.Frustration was the order of the day and was reflected in much swearing by drivers, notably Raikkonen, on team radio as they complained of traffic and other problems. Finally on lap 43, Hamiltons problems appeared to be solved as he set a fastest lap and began a real charge in earnest. He was nearly 14 seconds behind Perez with eight laps to go but at the front Rosberg, in a race of his own, cruised towards his fifth win of the season.

Sport: Total Olympic ban for Russia 'not impossible': Pound

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - A complete ban for the entire Russia team from next months Olympic Games in Rio is not impossible, the founding president of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), Dick Pound told Britains Sunday Times newspaper.Friday saw the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) uphold an international ban on Russias track and field competitors first imposed in November after a WADA team led by veteran Canadian sports administrator Pound revealed state-sponsored doping and mass corruption in Russian athletics. The Russia team is now ruled out of all events in athletics in Rio, although Russian athletes training outside the country can apply to compete as neutrals at the August 5-21 event in Brazil. The IAAFs decision was endorsed by the International Olympic Committee on Saturday. But there are concerns that the scale of Russias breaking of doping rules extend beyond just track and field. In May, WADA set up a new investigation under Professor Richard McLaren, a Canadian law professor and longstanding member of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), into allegations of state-backed doping at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the Russian lab now living in Los Angeles, also gave an interview to the New York Times last month in which he said he switched tainted urine samples for clean ones at the doping lab used for the Sochi Games, with help from people he believed to be officers of the Russian security services.McLaren, who is due to deliver his full report by July 15, has also looked into doping allegations surrounding the 2013 athletics World Championships in Moscow. In a statement issued Friday, McLaren said he had the evidence that Russias Ministry of Sport was involved in instructing a Moscow laboratory to not report positive sample results over the period before, during and after the 2013 World Championships.Meanwhile a joint newspaper report investigation by Britains The Times and Germanys Frankfurter Allgemeine published Friday alleged that two men at the centre of Russian doping revelations in athletics were said to have offered to exempt the countrys swimmers from drug-testing in return for an annual fee.Kicking the Russia team out of the Rio Games would be the nuclear option, Pound told the Sunday Times. But its not impossible. This investigation into Sochi has come about because of allegations made by Grigory Rodchenkov, the former head of the Moscow anti-doping laboratory, and he was high enough up in the Russian system to know what was going on, he added.

Football: Pogba shines as France top Euro Cup Group A

Posted:

LILLE, France, June 19, 2016 (AFP) - Paul Pogba shone through the mediocrity as hosts France secured top spot in Euro 2016 Group A following a subdued 0-0 draw with Switzerland in Lille on Sunday.A game that featured a substandard pitch, ripped Switzerland shirts and a burst ball concluded in a mutually convenient result that allowed the Swiss to join Didier Deschampss France in the last 16.But Pogba, dogged by controversy over an alleged contentious gesture prior to the game, did his best to illuminate proceedings, hitting the bar twice, as did French substitute Dimitri Payet late in the game.As group winners, France will face the third-place team in either Group C, D or E in Lyon on June 26, while Switzerland will come up against either Germany, Poland or Northern Ireland a day earlier. It was mission accomplished, therefore, for France, but following narrow wins over Romania and Albania, their failure to record a seventh consecutive victory means they advance with little momentum.A dry, patchy pitch at Stade Pierre-Mauroy made it difficult for both teams to get the ball down and play football, but aside from a few slips, Pogba did not seemed perturbed by the conditions underfoot. One of five players brought into the France team by Deschamps, in changes that saw in-form playmaker Payet left on the bench, the Juventus star seemed determined to erase the memory of his alleged bras dhonneur following Payets second goal in Wednesdays 2-0 win over Albania.Deployed in his preferred position on the left of a midfield three, he threatened three times in five minutes, forcing Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer to produce a wonder save in between two efforts that clipped the bar from outside the box.- Payet ovation -=================He also provided the first halfs only real moment of danger in the French penalty area when he unintentionally scuffed Xherdan Shaqiris eighth-minute corner towards his own goal. The ball struck Swiss centre-back Johan Djourou, sprawled on the French goal-line, and Pogba hacked clear.Pogba aside, Switzerlands biggest concern in the first period was the flimsiness of their shirts as Admir Mehmedi, Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo all had big holes torn in theirs.Switzerland began to find joy behind French full-backs Bacary Sagna and Patrice Evra in the second half, but the chances continued to fall to France.Andre-Pierre Gignac shot straight at Sommer, while Pogba excelled again by holding off four opponents and finding Griezmann, who played a one-two with Gignac before seeing a right-foot shot tipped over by Sommer.Payet made his entrance in the 63rd minute, replacing Kingsley Coman, and received a huge ovation from Frances fans, eager to see greater guile in their teams attacks.Payet immediately supplied an injection of dynamism, leaving the crossbar shuddering with a side-foot volley from Moussa Sissokos deep cross and then flashing a half-volley wide.Switzerland have now gone seven games without beating France, since a 2-1 win masterminded by current England coach Roy Hodgson in May 1992, but they will now contest a Euro knockout phase for the first time.

Football: Albania face wait after historic win over Romania

Posted:

LYON, June 19, 2016 (AFP) - Armando Sadiku scored Albanias first goal at a major tournament in a historic 1-0 win over Romania on Sunday to keep alive their slender hopes of progressing to the Euro 2016 knockout phase.Sadiku headed home the games only goal after 43 minutes in Lyon to leave debutants Albania facing an anxious wait to see if they qualify from Group A as one of the four best third-placed teams.Host nation France progressed as group winners following a 0-0 draw with second-placed Switzerland as Albania finished third on three points, but Romania exited with just a single point.Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu made wholesale changes as Alexandru Matel replaced the injured Razvan Rat at left-back with Denis Alibec handed a start up front.Ovidiu Hoban, Adrian Popa and Nicolae Stanciu were all recalled after the 1-1 draw with Switzerland, while Albania brought in Migjen Basha in place of the suspended Burim Kukeli in midfield. However, there was no room in the starting line-up for skipper Lorik Cana following his return from a one-match ban having been sent off in his teams opening game.Stanciu fired over with an early long-range strike as Romania signalled their intentions, before a nervy Etrit Berisha smothered Hobans tame strike at the second attempt.Albania were fortunate Basha stayed on the pitch when he caught Hoban with a dangerous shoulder-high lunge after just six minutes, but they had to weather the storm as Romania continued to threaten.Bogdan Stancu, scorer of both Romanias goals in their first two games, connected sweetly with a poor headed clearance with his volley batted away unconvincingly by Berisha.Alibec then curled narrowly wide from distance, but Albania started to impose themselves on the counter-attack as Ermir Lenjani skied over from point-blank range, although his blushes were spared by the offside flag.Ledian Memushaj shot straight at Ciprian Tatarusanu from a narrow angle, but the Romania goalkeeper was at fault as Sadiku nodded Albania ahead just before half-time.Memushajs driven right-wing cross was misjudged by Tatarusanu, who was left out of position as Sadiku headed back across goal to trigger wild celebrations among the sizeable Albanian support inside the Stade de Lyon.Memushaj forced Tatarusanu into a low save on the hour as Albania pressed for a second, but their dreams were nearly shattered when substitute Florin Andone rattled the crossbar on 76 minutes. The Cordoba striker raced through after a slick passing move only for his powerful strike to smack against the woodwork.Albania, who lost 1-0 to Switzerland before going down 2-0 to France in their first two games, must wait until the completion of the final round of group matches before finding out if they qualify for the last 16.

Sri Lanka's stricken Eranga banned for illegal action

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Hospitalised Sri Lanka paceman Shaminda Eranga has been banned from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect because of an illegal action, the International Cricket Council announced Sunday. The ICCs statement came just hours after Eranga had been taken to a Dublin hospital to undergo tests on an elevated heartbeat after he fell ill during Sri Lankas 136-run win over Ireland in the second one-day international at Malahide on Saturday. The International Cricket Council today (Sunday) announced that an independent assessment has found the bowling action of Sri Lankas Shaminda Eranga to be illegal and, as such, the fast bowler has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect, said a statement issued by the global governing body. The assessment revealed that all deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations, the statement added of a test carried out at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough, central England, an ICC accredited testing centre, on June 6.Erangas international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all National Cricket Federations for domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction, save that, with the consent of Sri Lanka Cricket, Eranga may be able to play in domestic cricket events played in Sri Lanka under the auspices of Sri Lanka Cricket.Eranga, who turns 30 on Thursday, will be able to return to international cricket if he passes a fresh test after modifying his bowling actionHe had his action reported after the second Test against England at Chester-le-Street last month.Eranga opened Sri Lankas bowling in the first innings of that match, taking none for 100 in 27 overs during Englands 498 for nine declared. The right-armer then bowled just one over in Englands second innings as they chased down a target of 79 for victory.Under ICC regulations, Eranga was allowed to continue playing until the results of his test were known and he featured in the drawn third Test at Lords, a result that saw England to an overall 2-0 series win, where he took one for 94 and three for 58.Saturday saw Eranga, who has now appeared in 19 Tests and the same number of ODIs, come out to face the final ball of Sri Lankas innings at Malahide but he did not bowl and instead went to hospital.Eranga had an elevated heartbeat prior to the innings commencing and was taken to hospital for tests, Sri Lanka team manager Charith Senanayake told the ESPNcricinfo website. Hes doing good but in hospital till Monday to complete all tests. The ICCs ban means Eranga will take no part in the upcoming five-match one-day international series against England, which starts at Nottinghams Trent Bridge ground on Tuesday.Eranga is the latest Sri Lanka pace bowler to be ruled out of the tour of Britain and Ireland.Dhammika Prasad was sidelined with a shoulder injury before the Test series against England and Dushmantha Chameera then had to return home with a stress fracture of the back. Bowlers are meant to keep their arms as straight as possible in delivery so that the ball is bowled rather than thrown towards the batsman. The ICC define an illegal bowling action as one where the bowlers elbow extension exceeds 15 degrees while he is in his delivery stride. They set the 15-degree limit for all bowlers in November 2004 after research showed no bowlers arm remained perfectly straight in delivery.

Mathews tells Sri Lanka to up their game against England

Posted:

MALAHIDE (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said his side will have to be at their best to beat England in the five-match one-day international series which starts on Tuesday.Mathews was speaking after overseeing a 2-0 ODI series victory over Ireland in Malahide after the second match was won by an emphatic 136-run margin on Saturday.Opening batsman Kusal Perera, who would have missed the tour had a drugs ban not been rescinded following a faulty doping analysis, made a century to build the platform for his sides huge total of 377 for 8.We still can improve a lot in all departments. It was a pretty convincing victory today, but we need to be at our best to beat England, said Mathews. Eoin Morgans England have improved dramatically in 50-over cricket since the Sri Lankans thrashed them by nine wickets in Wellington during last years World Cup.Saturdays win was set up by dynamic top-order batting, and Mathews said: Perera and Danuska Gunathilaka had a brilliant opening partnership (147) and after that solid foundation it was a tactical decision to bring in the pinch-hitter and take the game forward.Seekkugge Prasanna came in a three to pinch-hit in explosive style, bludgeoning nine sixes and five fours to leave his previous best ODI score of 42 far behind with 95 from just 46 balls. It was a very good wicket and a tough ask for the bowlers but we stuck to our task, explained Mathews. They had to bowl good lines and lengths. Having said that, after scoring 377 it was a tough ask for the Irish because they had to go at it from ball one, so we had to bowl dot balls and create pressure, the all-rounder added. The fifth and sixth overs of the Ireland reply were maidens and when captain William Porterfield was out to the first ball of the seventh over, Ireland, who have never beaten Sri Lanka in five attempts, could not cope. It needed a last wicket stand of 54 between Andrew McBrine and former England international Boyd Rankin to get the Ireland total over 200.The man of the series was Sri Lankas Dasun Shanaka, who scored 42 off 19 balls and took five wickets on his debut in the tourists 76-run win in the first match on Thursday and Mathews has high hopes for the 24-year-old.Shanaka is becoming a very good all-rounder for us and hopefully he will continue in the England ODIs and for the next few years, the captain said.We were short of seam-bowling all-rounders, but now with Farveez Maharoof, Shanaka and myself, we have plenty of options.Perera took advantage of the very good pitch to score 135, his second ODI century, before he was the second of three dismissals in the space of five balls. He faced 128 balls, with 16 fours and two sixes, and was happy to play second fiddle to Prasanna, who dominated an electrifying second-wicket stand of 161 in 89 balls. The late flurry of wickets allowed Ireland to restrict Sri Lanka to 67 from the last eight overs, when a total of 400 had looked likely.Suranga Lakmal was Sri Lankas most successful bowler. Sharing the new ball with Mathews, he dismissed both Ireland openers in the space of 10 balls, broke the stubborn seventh wicket stand between Stuart Poynter (36) and McBrine (79 off 64 balls) and added a fourth wicket at a personal cost of just 38 runs.Prasanna completed a fine all-round game with two for 32 from eight overs, and although Shanaka took only one wicket in his second game, it was the big one of the dangerous Kevin OBrien.

Gayle and Jayawardene star for Somerset

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chris Gayle and Mahela Jayawardene were both in the runs as Somerset beat Hampshire by six wickets in the South Division of English county crickets Twenty20 Blast at Taunton on Sunday.West Indies batsman Gayle struck three typically huge sixes and four fours on his way to 52 before the left-hander was bowled by Will Smith.Jayawardene, who retired from Sri Lanka duty after last years World Cup, then saw Somerset to their modest target of 134 with an unbeaten 45 off 32 balls, including a six and six fours. Somersets Jamie Overton and Max Waller had earlier taken four wickets each as Hampshire were dismissed for a modest 133.Overton, a pace bowler, took the wickets of Hampshire opener Michael Carberry (17), skipper James Vince (10), West Indies all-rounder Darren Sammy (nought) and Gareth Berg (four) at a cost of just 22 runs, while leg-spinner Waller took four for 33.Elsewhere New Zealand wicket-keeper Luke Ronchis 53 helped Warwickshire beat Lancashire by 18 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method at Edgbaston.Yorkshire claimed their first Blast win of the season, by the narrowest margin as they defeated Derbyshire by one run in a rain-marred match at Headingley.Chasing Derbyshires total of 153 for nine, Yorkshire, faced only nine overs but reached 67 for three, which was the precise score they needed to secure a win under the Duckworth/Lewis method.Former England opener Adam Lyth hit two sixes and three fours in a 16-ball 30 and New Zealands Kane Williamson made 21 off 20 deliveries faced.

South Africa bat in De Villiers' 200th appearance

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and put South Africa in to bat in the seventh match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Sunday.Leading the standings by a point over Australia and a further point ahead of hosts the West Indies, a victory for South Africa today will confirm their place in the final at the same venue in seven days time.Their captain, A.B. de Villiers, is appearing in his 200th ODI for his country.Mindful of a pitch that is expected to be more helpful to the fast bowlers than at the previous venues in Guyana and St Kitts, the Proteas have brought in tall fast bowler Morne Morkel for his first match of the tournament at the expense of left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi.Australia have adopted similar tactics by bolstering their pace armoury with the return of Mitchell Starc, in keeping with the policy of alternation between himself and Nathan Coulter-Nile, and also selecting Scott Boland for his first appearance in the competition. Glenn Maxwell returns to the line-up in the middle-order at the expense of Travis Head after missing the last two matches at Warner Park.Teams: Australia: Steve Smith (captain), Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper), James Faulkner, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood.South Africa: A.B. de Villiers (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock (wicketkeeper), Faf du Plessis, J.P.
