Spin-king Tahir leaves Windies in a tangle

Posted:

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Imran Tahir wrote his name in the record books as South Africa completed a comprehensive 139-run victory over the West Indies in the sixth match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday.Defending a formidable total of 343 for four, the leg-spinner feasted on an inept Caribbean batting effort with outstanding figures of seven for 45 off nine overs, the best-ever returns by a South African bowler in the history of ODI cricket.Along the way, Tahir, in his 58th match, surpassed the record of Morne Morkel as the fastest South African to 100 ODI wickets in terms of matches played.Im really grateful for how things worked out for me today, said a delighted Tahir. It was a fantastic effort by the entire team and Im just delighted to have played a part.Earlier, Hashim Amlas 23rd ODI hundred highlighted a domineering batting effort from the Proteas after they were put in by home captain Jason Holder. Tahir and Tabraiz Shami (two for 41) then extinguished the West Indian reply after a bright opening start, Tahirs record harvest including three in one over as the hosts were dismissed for 204 off 38 overs.Tahir and Shamsi, in just his second match, effected the breakthrough after the rousing start of 69 in less than ten overs by openers Johnson Charles (49) and Andre Fletcher (21).Only 24 from Marlon Samuels among the accomplished batsmen represented any form of resistance to the spinners.By virtue of the margin of their victory, A.B. de Villiers team moves to the top of the standings on ten points, one ahead of Australia and two more than the West Indies.Competition shifts to Barbados for the final three preliminary matches, beginning with South Africa versus Australia on June 19 at Kensington Oval, ahead of the final at the same venue a week later.Amlas effortless innings of 110, which came off 99 deliveries and included 13 boundaries, set the Proteas on their way to the formidable total in partnership with Quinton de Kock.Bristling with aggression in contrast to Amlas serene progress, the left-hander contributed 71 in an opening stand of 182.Their partnership established a new record for the first wicket in an ODI at the venue, eclipsing the previous standard of 160 set by former South African captain Graeme Smith and de Villiers against Australia at the 2007 World Cup.All-rounder Chris Morris, back in the team after recovering from an injury sustained in the first match of the tournament in Guyana two weeks earlier, was promoted to number three in the order to accelerate the scoring and responded by belting 40 off 26 deliveries. However it was Faf du Plessis who stole the show over the final overs of the innings, blazing an unbeaten 73 off just 50 balls in a hurricane knock decorated with six fours and two sixes. De Villiers, whose dismissal on Saturday triggered the collapse that paved the way for an unexpected Australian victory, contributed 27 to the effort.Kieron Pollard took two expensive wickets but mystery spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the Caribbean bowlers, conceding 46 runs from ten wicketless overs. We just need to pick ourselves up after this performance, said a dejected Holder after the match. We are still very much in the competition and need to put in the hard work before the next match.

Oil drops as US stockpiles fall less than expected

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Wednesday for the fifth time in a row as US crude stockpiles shrank less than expected, adding to concerns about demand in a tepid global economy. The Department of Energys weekly petroleum report showed commercial crude inventories fell by 900,000 barrels in the week ending June 10 to a still-high 531.5 million barrels. Experts polled by Bloomberg had forecast a much larger drop of 2.33 million barrels. Its a pretty bearish supply situation that we have, said Bob Yawger of Mizuho Securities USA.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for July delivery fell 48 cents to $48.01 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August finished at $48.97 a barrel, down 86 cents from Tuesdays settlement.Prices spiked higher after the DoE report before falling back as traders weighed the implications and worried about soft demand. At the end of the day we have a lot of crude oil, gasoline and heating oil still laying around, Yawger said. After almost doubling from February to multi-month highs last week above $50 a barrel, oil prices have come under selling pressure this week, due to worries about the global economic outlook and Britains vote next week on quitting the European Union. In addition, the International Energy Agency warned Tuesday that while it expects global crude demand to grow this year and next, huge inventories would cap future price gains.

Dollar falls as Fed holds rates steady and pares forecasts

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar weakened Wednesday after the Federal Reserve left interest rates on hold and pared back its growth and rate hike forecasts. The Federal Open Market Committee said at the end of a two-day policy meeting that it would keep its benchmark federal funds rate, a short-term peg for dollar lending rates around the world, at a low 0.25-0.50 percent. The Fed left interest rates unchanged, as expected, but sketched a slightly weaker outlook for growth and interest rates, news that initially weighed on the dollar, said Joe Manimbo at Western Union Business Solutions. The FOMC lowered its forecast for US growth to 2.0 percent for this year, from 2.2 percent previously. It sees that same tepid pace holding through 2018.And it stuck to expectations that it would raise the fed funds rate twice over the next six months to near 1.0 percent but lowered the pace of potential rate hikes in 2017 and 2018.After Fed Chair Janet Yellens dovish post-meeting news conference, the dollar ended the day down 0.5 percent against the euro, at $1.1263.The greenback also fell against the yen and the pound on the eve of interest rate decisions by the Bank of Japan and the Bank of England. Neither central bank is expected to change monetary policy, although some investors bet the BoJ would announce another round of stimulus. The pound has been hammered by fears about Britains looming June 23 referendum on quitting the European Union as a spate of recent polls showed growing support for an exit.On Wednesday sterling jumped to $1.4212 as the latest poll by ComRes showed support for remaining in the EU at 46 percent and the pro-exit side at 45 percent.

Amla hits 23rd ODI ton as South Africa pile up 343

BASSETERRE (AFP) - Hashim Amlas 23rd one-day international century highlighted a run-feast by South Africa in amassing 343 for four batting first against the West Indies in the sixth match of the Tri-Nation series at Warner Park in St Kitts on Wednesday. His effortless innings of 110, together with 71 from opening partner Quinton de Kock, set the Proteas on their way to the formidable total after home captain Jason Holder won the toss and chose to field first despite what appeared to be ideal batting conditions.Amla and de Kock put on 182 for the first wicket, a record in ODIs at the venue.All-rounder Chris Morris, back in the team after recovering from an injury sustained in the first match of the tournament in Guyana two weeks earlier, was promoted to number three in the order to accelerate the scoring and responded by belting 40 off 26 deliveries. However it was Faf du Plessis who stole the show over the final overs of the innings, blazing an unbeaten 73 off just 50 balls in a hurricane knock decorated with six fours and two sixes. South African captain AB de Villiers, whose dismissal on Saturday triggered the collapse that paved the way for an unexpected Australian victory, contributed 27.Needing victory to stay in contention for a place in the final in Barbados on June 26, de Villiers will nevertheless be mindful of the West Indies reputation as a chasing team, especially after reaching a target of 266 to get the better of the Aussies on Tuesday to stay a point behind the World Cup-holders.South Africa started the match on five points, three behind the West Indies.Kieron Pollard took two expensive wickets but spinner Sunil Narine was the pick of the Caribbean bowlers, conceding 46 runs from ten wicketless overs.

India crush Zimbabwe by 10 wickets for series whitewash

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - Seamer Jasprit Bumrah grabbed four wickets as another hopeless performance from Zimbabwes batsmen handed India a crushing one-day international series whitewash at Harare Sports Club on Wednesday.Zimbabwe made five changes for the third and final ODI, but it made no difference as they were bowled out for 123 with Bumrah taking 4 for 22.Chasing another meagre target, India required less than 22 overs to wrap up a 3-0 series win as KL Rahul made an unbeaten 63 and Faiz Fazal marked his international debut with an unbeaten 55.Zimbabwes management team of Makhaya Ntini and Lance Klusener had called for time after losing the first two matches by nine and eight wickets, but if anything their batsmens performances deteriorated over the course of the series. The hosts failed to bat out 50 overs in any of the three games and never managed more than 168, despite being up against a second-string Indian team. The wickets have been slightly helpful for us so it has been a little bit easier, reflected Bumrah. As with the second ODI, Vusi Sibandas knock gave Zimbabwe a steady enough start, only for a catastrophic collapse to leave Indias batsman with a simple task.Sibanda offered a tame return catch to legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal, and Bumrah dismissed Timycen Maruma and Elton Chigumbura in consecutive deliveries. The next over saw Malcolm Waller run out and Graeme Cremer trapped lbw by his first delivery, meaning that Zimbabwe had lost four wickets in four deliveries. In all they lost their last seven wickets for 19 runs, echoing their batting in Mondays second ODI when they lost six for 20.Bumrah finished his first full one-day series with nine wickets, hinting that he can turn his success in Twenty20 cricket into a successful 50-over career. This is a different game but I keep the same mindset and try to stick to my strengths and do what I know, he said.Similarly man of the series KL Rahul made an excellent start to his limited overs career, scoring 196 runs for one dismissal across the three games. The two teams begin a three-match Twenty20 international series at the same venue on Saturday, which Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer hopes will provide a fresh slate. We wont dwell on this series defeat for too long - its gone, said Cremer. Maybe the T20 series is just what we need to get back into a positive frame of mind.
