Football: Misfiring Ronaldo, Portugal foiled by Austria

Posted:

PARIS, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo missed a second-half penalty as Portugal stumbled to a second straight draw at Euro 2016 on Saturday after a frustrating 0-0 stalemate against Group F rivals Austria in Paris.Ronaldo set a new Portuguese record with his 128th international cap, surpassing the mark previously shared with Luis Figo, but the occasion will be better remembered for the Real Madrid superstar hitting the post with a 79th-minute spot-kick.Hungary, who salvaged a point in a 1-1 draw with Iceland, are the surprise group leaders with a game to play, while Austria must win their final match to avoid exiting prematurely. This is not the result we wanted. Its not fair, its not deserved but thats football, said Portugal coach Fernando Santos. Its no use crying over spilt milk, its not the time to have regrets. We have another point and we have a final to play on the 22nd (against Hungary), we have to focus on winning the next match.Santos sought to reinvigorate his team after a disappointing 1-1 draw with Iceland, drafting in Ricardo Quaresma to form an attacking trident with Ronaldo and Nani.William Carvalho was handed a start in central midfield, while Austria coach Marcel Koller made three changes, two enforced, with Sebastian Prodl, Stefan Ilsanker and Marcel Sabitzer all coming into the side beaten 2-0 by Hungary on Tuesday.Austria showed early signs of promise, much like in their opener against Hungary, carving out a chance when a leaping Martin Harnik nodded Sabitzers whipped cross just wide. But Portugal settled quickly, with Nani denied his second goal of the tournament by the outstretched leg of Austria goalkeeper Robert Almer after breaking in behind centre-back Prodl.Almer tipped a long-range strike from Vieirinha behind, while Ronaldo spurned a glorious opportunity to write his name into the history books on 22 minutes as he steered wide from Raphael Guerreiros cut-back inside the area.Portugal remained the dominant side and nearly reaped their reward just before the half-hour, only for Nanis header from Andre Gomes left-wing cross to crash back off the post with Joao Moutinho drilling the rebound over.Ronaldo then helped on a Quaresma header straight at Almer, but Vieirinha needed to make an important clearance to keep David Alabas driven free-kick from finding Harnik at the far post.- Portuguese authority -========================Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio parried away a stinging drive from Ilsanker within seconds of the restart, although Portugal soon reasserted their authority with Ronaldo leading the charge. His thunderous left-footed strike from the edge of the area was turned behind by Almer, and the ensuing corner produced a similar result with the Austria keeper beating away Ronaldos downward header.Koller hauled off Alaba on 65 minutes, replacing the Bayern Munich star with Schalke midfielder Alessandro Schopf, but it failed to stem the flow of Portuguese attacks. And with 11 minutes to go it appeared Portugal would get the goal their display merited when they were awarded a penalty after Martin Hinteregger wrestled Ronaldo to the ground. But the three-time World Player of the Year was left shaking his head in disbelief as he smacked the ball against the base of the post to ensure his wait for a goal at a record fourth European Championship finals goes on.

Tennis: Net-buster Keys reached Birmingham final, enters top 10

Posted:

BIRMINGHAM, United Kingdom, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - Madison Keys reached the Birmingham grass court final on Saturday and moved into the world top 10 for the first time with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7/3) win over Carla Suarez Navarro.Keys is the first US woman to debut in the top 10 since Serena Williams in 1999 and she achieved the breakthrough in explosive style, managing to unleash such a powerful forehand on one point that she destroyed the net.The 21-year-old dropped serve early on against her Spanish opponent, repaired the damage in a rousing second set, accelerated into a 4-2 final set lead, and then twice had to serve to save the match before snatching the result in a tense tie-break.I only heard about being in the top 10 from my coach and I didnt want to think about it, admitted Keys who will face Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic in Sundays final.I was pretending I didnt know. Much of the time I was concentrating on trying to get back into the match.Keys eventually achieved that with 12 explosive aces and many more service winners, although her ferociously struck forehands were mixed with many unforced errors, one of which was a drive which landed two feet up the backstop.A warning about the damaging pace of her forehand came as early as the second point when Keys launched the ball into the net and watched it collapse. She claims once to have played a match in an earthquake, and Saturdays incident also caused a ripple, with ground staff jumping around and managing to attach another net within five minutes. But when Keys hit her targets she was unstoppable, creating the kind of devastation which recently prompted Serena Williams to describe her as a future world number one.It was ironic therefore that a rare error from the admirably consistent Navarro, brought the mortal blow.Constructing a nicely patterned rally and looking well positioned to nudge the score back to 4/5 in the tie-break she unexpectedly chose to slice a backhand at a sharp angle across the forecourt. It slid wide and put her match point down at 3/6.Keys closed it out with a first serve and two strident drives. It was a balancing act all through between going for the right shot and being more consistent, she reckoned. My only title is on grass (Eastbourne, 2014) and the surface really suits my game. This year I really want to go further than the quarter-final I reached at Wimbledon last year.Keys had thought she might have a final against one of her best friends, CoCo Vandeweghe, the 32nd ranked American.Instead Vandeweghe was worn down 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 by Strycova, the Czech who reached her second Birmingham final in three years. This too was an utterly unpredictable match. Vandeweghe broke back bravely for 2-3 in the final set, whereupon she sat in her chair and burst into tears.Im not really a crier so I dont know what that was about, she said.Theres been a lot of things going on this week so I guess it was an accumulation of all of them.It was her last flourish though. Strycova, still apparently fresh after an exasperating on-off week, increasingly proved calmly and consistently effective.

Golf: McIlroy misses US Open cut

Posted:

OAKMONT, United States, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - A shocking back-nine implosion sent Rory McIlroy reeling out of the US Open on Saturday, the world number three missing the cut at a major for the first time since the 2013 British Open. The Northern Ireland star, who won the US Open in 2011, was charging early in the second round with four birdies in his first seven holes. But his bid to bounce back from a seven-over opening effort stalled with a four-putt double-bogey at the par-four third. That was followed by a bogey at the par-three sixth and finally, with his hopes of playing at the weekend in the balance, a double-bogey to cap his round at the ninth.Teeing off on 10, McIlroy opened with a birdie and picked up shots at 12, 14 and 16.The 17th may have been a harbinger of things to come. He drove the green of the par-four for a look at eagle, but three-putted for par.At the third, two impressive shots left him 13 feet for birdie, but it was only after four putts that he staggered off the green.A bogey at the sixth left him on the cut-line as he arrived at the ninth.McIlroy found a fairway bunker off the tee and needed two shots to get out of it.It was a disappointing exit for the 27-year-old, who displayed solid form in posting his first victory of 2016 at the Irish Open in May.He still looked sharp in a fourth-placed finish at PGA Tours Memorial Tournament. But he said after his seven-over opening round that he was struggling with his swing -- never a good thing on a course as exacting as Oakmont.I know what Im doing, but its hard to change it out there, McIlroy said.If he sticks to his announced plans, McIlroy will tee it up on June 30 in the French Open before the Open Championship at Troon, Scotland July 14-17.McIlroy will have extra motivation at Troon, after missing his Open title defence last year because of injury. And hes proved well able to bounce back from adversity before, following up a 2011 last-round Masters collapse with an eight-stroke US Open triumph that marked his first major title.

Football: Late own goal saves Hungary from being frozen out

Posted:

MARSEILLE, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - An own-goal by Icelands Birkir Savarsson in the dying seconds rescued a draw for Hungary in a frenetic Euro 2016 clash that keeps both teams hopes alive of a second round berth.A first-half penalty by Gylfi Sigurdsson put little Iceland on course for a fairytale win. But the European Championship newcomers succumbed to waves of late Hungarian pressure. With 88 minutes gone, substitute Nemanja Nikolic sent a low ball into the area and in the thick of a goalmouth scramble, Savarsson touched the ball into his own net.Prior to the tournament both teams viewed this Marseille tie as their best opportunity to get a win. But unfancied Hungarys shock 2-0 victory against Austria on Tuesday meant a slot in the last-16 beckoned if they could beat the Scandinavians.Hungary had more of the ball in the first-half, but, more used to playing a counterattacking game, they failed to craft clearcut openings against a physical Iceland defense.Their midfield trio of Laszlo Kleinheisler, Balazs Dzsudzsak and Zoltan Stieber probed industriously. But the nearest they came to hitting the target in the first half was a Kleinheisler effort that raked across the goalmouth on 33 minutes. In contrast, Iceland attacks carried more direct menace, with their best chance falling to Johann Gudmundsson on the half hour.- Kiraly suffers -==================Having shouldered right-back Tamas Kadar off the ball, he found himself one-on-one against Hungary goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly but angled a weak shot straight at the 40-year-old, the oldest player ever to play at a European Championship final.Approaching half-time Kiraly took centre-stage in a horror show he will want to forget.Six minutes before the break he fumbled a corner from Johann Gudmundsson, then tripped Ragnar Sigurdsson while grappling to recover the ball.In the scramble that ensued referee Sergei Karasev pointed to the spot for a kick by Kadar on Gunnarsson. He dived the wrong way for the penalty as Sigurdsson fired smartly to the left to give the Scandinavians the lead. Kiraly kicked the ball away in disgust. After the break the Magyars resumed their pressure with Kleinheisler blasting over over twice in five minutes. But it was Iceland who could have extended their lead on the hour, Sigthorsson heading wide from point-blank range after a pinpoint cross by Sigurdsson. The goal-shy Magyars -- who only scored 11 goals in 10 qualifying games -- toiled anxiously for the leveller with Dzsudzsak twice sending free-kicks straight at Hannes Halldorsson. As Hungary anxiously sought an equaliser Bernd Storck sent on Nikolic as an extra striker but they appeared to lack the final breakthrough touch.Nikolics cross finally secured the equaliser to break Icelandic hearts.Iceland, who nearly stole a winner with the final kick, a snapshot by subsitute former Chelsea and Barcelona forward Eidur Gudjohnsen, face Austria on Wednesday in their final group game. The Nordic minnows need a win to seal a berth in the knockout stages. Hungary can progress by avoiding defeat against Portugal in Lyon the same day.

Tennis: Teen stuns Federer as Halle set for All-German final

Posted:

HALLE WESTFALEN, Germany, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - Teenager Alexander Zverev caused a major shock as he beat eight-time winner and top seed Roger Federer in the Halle grasscourt semi-finals on Saturday.Error-strewn Federers vulnerability on his favourite surface could perhaps be explained by a back injury that made the 34-year-old miss last months French Open, but this was not the build-up to Wimbledon that the Swiss ace wanted. The 19-year-old Zverev triumphed 7-6 (7/4), 5-7, 6-3 to reach only his second ATP Tour final after being beaten by Dominic Thiem on clay in Nice last month. The tournament will see an all-German final after 192-ranked Florian Mayer crushed world number seven Thiem, 6-3, 6-4, in Saturdays second semi-final.As Zverev bids for his maiden career title, Mayer plays his sixth final and first in nearly five years as he targets a second ATP title after Bucharest in September 2011.Its unbelievable to get a win against Roger, especially on grass, said Zverev. I played very good and served well once again. I think that helped me a little bit and I played well in the important moments. Its nice to get a win like that. Its nice with that kind of match going into Wimbledon and obviously into the final here as well.Dont forget that that is a very big match for me as well. Well see what happens tomorrow but Im happy with my performance today.

Tennis: Murray to face Raonic in Queen's final

Posted:

LONDON, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - Andy Murray moved a step closer to a record fifth Queens Club title as the defending champion battled into the final with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Marin Cilic on Saturday.Murray was pushed hard by Cilic but eventually subdued the Croatian in a tense two-hour semi-final and will face Milos Raonic for the trophy on Sunday after the Canadian third seed defeated Australias Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-4.The 29-year-old Scots primary aim is to hone his grass-court game with Wimbledon starting in just over a week, but he would also relish passing John McEnroe, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Roy Emerson and Boris Becker as the sole owner of the most Queens crowns. There have been many great players over the years who have played here so if I can do better than them and win a fifth title, then it is a good sign, but Im certainly not taking anything for granted, Murray said.Reaching his fifth final of the year will be hugely encouraging for Murray in the week he reunited with coach Ivan Lendl, two years after they originally parted ways. The two-time Grand Slam champion looks to have got his painful French Open final loss to Novak Djokovic out of his system as he prepares for his latest attempt to emulate his historic 2013 Wimbledon triumph.Marin plays extremely well on the grass so I knew I had to play really well. There were some really good points, Murray said.In the third set the intensity got raised and I played some good shots at the end.Hopefully I can serve like that again in the final. Its so important on this surface. After playing British opponents in the previous two rounds, Murray had been looking forward to enjoying the complete backing of the crowd once again and he didnt take long to get them cheering.

Cricket: Sri Lanka beat Ireland for 2-0 series win

O'Neill rues Irish defending against Belgium

Posted:

BORDEAUX, June 18, 2016 (AFP) - Republic of Ireland manager Martin ONeill rued his teams sloppiness in a 3-0 defeat to Belgium at Euro 2016 on Saturday that compromised their prospects of reaching the last 16.Ireland held the Belgians into the interval of the Group E game in Bordeaux, but Romelu Lukaku netted twice in the second half, either side of an Axel Witsel goal, as Belgium claimed a comfortable win.We accepted the fact that Belgium are as talented a team, individually, as any in the competition, but the goals we gave away were not great from our viewpoint, said ONeill, whose team started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sweden. They pushed us back but my disappointment came from the fact that against Sweden we played exceptionally well with the ball, but today when we had it we looked too nervous and gave it away too readily. We tried to rectify that at half-time but the disappointment came from the fact they broke on us for the first goal. Then you start to chase the game a bit, get stretched, and of course very fine players can punish you, and thats what happened.Having frustrated Belgium in the first half, the games key moment arrived three minutes after the interval when Everton striker Lukaku scored following a counter-attack.- Penalty call -================But Ireland felt they should have had a penalty just before that goal when Shane Long was caught inside the Belgian area by Toby Alderweirelds high boot.I just felt a kick in the back of the head. Then they broke and scored. I cant really comment on what I really want to say but its frustrating, Long told Irish radio station Newstalk. Before getting on the team bus to head back to the squads base in Versailles, near Paris, ONeill added: I know the players seem adamant about it but I havent seen it back yet. That is doubly disappointing if that is the case. I was asked if that would have changed the course of the game and naturally it would have done, but overall today we were beaten by a better team.Ireland go into their final group game against Italy in Lille next Wednesday with just one point to their name and are likely to have to win against the Azzurri to stand a chance of going through. However, their cause could be aided by the fact that Italy, with six points to their name, have already qualified for the last 16 as group winners. There are two ways of looking at this, ONeill added. You can start feeling very sorry for yourself or you can take some confidence from the way you played three or four days ago (against Sweden) and take that into the game.We felt we could do something in this game. It didnt materialise but now we have to go and throw everything into the match to prevent Italy from scoring and try to win the game ourselves.Defender and captain John OShea added: We have a big chance now against Italy.Theyve been fantastic, but we have to take the positives from the first half and Sweden, and with a bit more discipline and control we can get something against Italy.
