Australians down West Indies to reach final

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Australia displayed the composure and assurance of world champions to chase down a target of 283 and advance to the final with a six-wicket victory over the West Indies in the seventh match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International Series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday.Marlon Samuels first-ever hundred against Australia and a record-breaking partnership with Denesh Ramdin lifted the West Indies to a competitive 282 for eight batting first. But half-centuries by captain Steven Smith and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh, together with a quickfire unbeaten 46 from Glenn Maxwell ensured that the target was reached with eight balls to spare.West Indies and South Africa will now meet in the last preliminary match on Friday with the winners to face the Aussies in Sundays final.Smith and Marsh steadied Australias effort following the loss of three early wickets with a 122-run fourth-wicket partnership that set the World Cup-holders back on course. However, when Smith was run out for 78 in the 42nd over, any hopes the West Indies had of claiming the victory that would have eliminated Australia were extinguished by Maxwell.Displaying his full range of unorthodox shots, he crashed five fours and two sixes off just 26 balls to banish any lingering anxiety among his teammates in the dressing room. Marsh was left unbeaten on 79, his mature knock going a long way towards fulfilling a lot of the promise that has been expected of him in Australias middle-order.Mitch played really well all the way through and Glenn was brilliant at the end there, said a delighted Smith after the match. We knew it was challenging target but we always backed ourselves to get home.It was so different at the halfway point of the match following Samuels superb knock, an effort that earned him the Man of the Match award.Dismissed off the last ball of the innings for 125 which included 14 fours and two sixes off 134 deliveries, Samuels tenth one-day hundred followed a match-winning 92 in the last meeting between the two teams in St Kitts a week earlier. Amazingly, they were his first two scores over 50 in ODI cricket against the Australians for more than 14 years.Ramdin, who matched his senior partner shot-for-shot in an entertaining innings of 91, joined Samuels at the crease with the West Indies faltering at 31 for three in the ninth over after Smith had won the toss and chose to field. They put on 192 for the fourth wicket, a new record for the West Indies against Australia as it surpassed the mark of 149 set by Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai in the inaugural World Cup final at Lords exactly 41 years earlier.During the course of his innings, Samuels went past the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs while Ramdin became the first West Indies wicketkeeper to reach the plateau of 2,000 runs in this format of the game before Mitchell Starc broke the partnership by bowling Ramdin. Two of the three sixes in his 92-ball innings were consecutive straight hits off Starc, the left-arm fast bowler finishing with figures of three for 51. He should have also claimed the wicket of Samuels but wicketkeeper Matthew Wade failed to hold on the chance offered when the Jamaican batsman was on 65.Starc had dispatched openers Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher while Josh Hazlewood accounted for Darren Bravo via a diving slip catch by Smith within the first nine overs of the match. We put in a good effort but being a bowler short for most of the innings cost us, said West Indies captain Jason Holder, who could only deliver two overs before leaving the field with a leg injury. We have to lift ourselves to face South Africa on Friday and Im confident of us putting in a good effort.

Oil prices dip ahead of US inventories data, Brexit vote

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell modestly Tuesday after a two-day rally as dealers awaited the latest report on US crude inventories and Britains crucial vote on European Union membership this week.Markets were on tenterhooks two days before Britains EU referendum on Thursday. New polls showed Tuesday the vote was still too close to call between supporters favoring remaining in the EU and those backing an exit. Its a pullback from the boost we saw yesterday that was heavily influenced by optimism about the Brexit vote, optimism they would not exit, in the sense that would help capital markets around the world, certainly in Europe, said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for July delivery fell 52 cents to $48.85 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in August, the global benchmark, slipped three cents to $50.62 a barrel.Profit-taking ahead of US inventories data is definitely one of the reasons why crude prices have pulled back, especially since prices had risen rather sharply in the previous two trading days, said City Index analyst Fawad Razaqzada.Crude futures pared losses that had pushed the WTI futures contract down more than $1 a barrel earlier in the session.July WTI crude oil expires today, and so trading in that particular instrument may see some volatility related to thinning volumes... which may be independent of wider market conditions, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Traders also appeared cautious ahead of the US Department of Energys report on the countrys petroleum stockpiles on Wednesday.US commercial crude inventories are expected to have declined by 1.5 million barrels last week, according to a survey of experts by Bloomberg News. US crude stockpiles remain at record-high levels amid a global market awash in supply.

Euro, pound slip two days before Brexit vote

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The euro and British pound edged lower Tuesday, just two days before the market-rattling Brexit referendum, with the remain and leave camps running almost even in the polls. The euro lost 0.5 percent on the dollar, to $1.1259, and the pound fell 0.3 percent to $1.4675.The pound, though, remained well above the $1.41 level it hit a week ago when fears were highest that the leave vote would win.US Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen warned of significant economic repercussions if Britain breaks with the 28-member European Union.Meanwhile, European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi said it was preparing for all possible contigencies. Its difficult to speculate about one outcome instead of another, Draghi said in a Brussels hearing.Weve done all preparation that is necessary now.

Football: Perisic winner stuns champions Spain

Posted:

BORDEAUX (AFP) - Ivan Perisic struck a sensational winner three minutes from time as Croatia ended Spains 14-game unbeaten run at the European Championship to top Group D after a 2-1 victory in Bordeaux on Tuesday.Spain will now face Italy in the last 16 in Paris on Monday in a repeat of the 2012 final.Alvaro Moratas early strike got Spain off to a flying start, but, despite the absence of key man Luka Modric through injury, Croatia battled back to equalise before half-time through Nikola Kalinic.Spain captain Sergio Ramos saw a penalty saved by Danijel Subasic 18 minutes from time. And that miss proved vital when Perisic snuck the ball home at David de Geas near post.Croatia meet one of the best third-placed sides in Lens on Saturday. The manner of back-to-back victories over the Czech Republic and Turkey had seen Spain installed as bookies favourites to win an unprecedented third successive European Championship.Moratas return to European champions Real Madrid from Juventus had been confirmed earlier on Tuesday. And he moved level with club teammate Gareth Bale on three goals in the fight for the golden boot by finishing off a slick Spanish move after seven minutes.David Silvas cute reverse pass picked out Cesc Fabregass run and the Chelsea midfielders cross was tapped into an empty net by Morata.Spain looked rarely troubled at the back in their opening two games, but were given plenty of problems by Croatia despite the absence of star midfielder Modric.Kalinic stung the palms of David de Gea before forcing an error from the Manchester United keeper as he dallied. The loose ball fell to Ivan Rakitic and his brilliant chipped effort floated over Barcelona teammate Gerard Pique on the line before coming back off both the crossbar and post.Morata had a great chance to double Spains lead when he failed to control Fabregass fine through ball with just Subasic to beat. However, Vicente Del Bosques men were pegged back right on half-time when Perisics cross from the left was delightfully flicked home by Kalinic. It was the first time Spain had conceded in 11 competitive games stretching back to October 2014 and first time they had conceded in the Euros for a record 733 minutes. The goal seemed to knock Spain out of their stride as Croatia pushed them onto the back foot at the start of the second period.De Gea saved from Tin Jedvaj to atone for his own error in flapping at a cross before Marko Pjaca sent an acrobatic effort just wide from the rebound.Pjaca also had claims for a penalty waved away as Croatia threatened the goal that would have taken them top of the group.Del Bosque responded by withdrawing front two Nolito and Morata for the more physical presence of Bruno Soriano and Aritz Aduriz.Spain were then handed a great chance to retake the lead when referee Bjorn Kuipers adjudged Silva had been pushed by Sime Vrsaljko inside the area.Modric appeared to send on a message to Subasic when he saw his Real Madrid teammate Ramos step up to take the spot-kick.And Subasic got lucky as his penalty save was allowed to stand despite the fact he had encroached well before Ramos took aim.Croatia took full advantage to blow the tournament wide open as Perisic lashed home to round off a clinical counter-attack leaving Spain, Italy, Germany, France and England all on the bottom-half of the last-16 draw.

Football: Turkey stun Czech Republic to revive Euro hopes

Posted:

LENS (AFP) - Burak Yilmaz and Ozan Tufan scored a goal in each half as Turkey beat Czech Republic 2-0 to keep alive slim hopes of reaching the Euro 2016 last 16 on Tuesday. The defeat eliminated Czech Republic, who had already suffered at Turkish hands at a past Euro finals.Turkey lost their first two Group D matches and were punished for their unruly fans. And there were more wild scenes in the stands as Turkey stole the match. Eighteen year-old Emre Mor, who has just been signed by Borussia Dortmund, burst down the right after 10 minutes, saw Yilmaz in the middle and provided a perfect ball for the Beijing Guoan player to fire the ball into the corner. In a closely fought contest that was Turkeys only entry into the Czech goal area in the first half hour.Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Babacan produced a series of brilliant saves to keep his side in the game. He also had some luck when Tomas Sivoks header came off the crossbar. At the 2008 Euro finals, Turkey came from two goals down to beat the Czech Republic 3-2. And Czech veteran Jaroslav Plasil, who scored in that game, played a one-two with Borek Dockal and fired a 25-metre drive that was heading for the corner of the net before Babacan made a dramatic leap to push it wide. The Czech Republic pressed forward but Turkey struck a killer blow on 65 minutes.Selcuk Inan put across a free-kick that Mehmet Topal headed back and Tufan smashed a tight angle shot that powered past Petr Cech. Its of course a huge disappointment for everyone. We had it in our hands, unfortunately we failed. We started very well, they scored on the first attack and that was the breaking point, Cech told Czech television. If we played another four hours today, I think we would still not be able to score. The three points ensured that Turkey could still reach the last 16, at least until the final round of group matches on Wednesday. They will need results to go their way in the Group E games between Italy and Irish Republic and Sweden-Belgium to pull off the miracle.Turkish fans threw flares on the pitch to put their country at risk of new UEFA sanctions. At least three flares landed on the pitch following the second goal. Turkey were punished after their fans set off flares in the stadium during their defeat by Spain last Friday. At the end of the first half there was trouble between Turkish fans and stadium stewards after a firecracker exploded in the Turkish section of the crowd and stewards move in to find the fan responsible.

Tennis: Radwanska takes Eastbourne shortcut

EASTBOURNE (AFP) - Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska took a shortcut into the third round of the WTA Eastbourne grass-court event on Tuesday when Croatian opponent Mirjana Lucic-Baroni retired ill trailing 6-4, 2-1.But the Pole proved to be an exception to the days trend as nine other seeds made a mass exit in the second round.First among that number was holder and third seed Belinda Bencic, with the Swiss teenager who missed the clay season with back pain saving two match points before losing to 2013 champion Elena Vesnina 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5).Russias Ekaterina Makarova, titleholder on the lawns in 2010, put out second-seeded US Open finalist Roberta Vinci 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 while Swiss fourth seed Timea Bacsinszky lost to Frances Kristina Mladenovic 6-1, 7-5.Another to drop in the last week prior to Mondays start of Wimbledon included two-time Grand Slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova - the sixth seed went down to Kateryna Bondarenko 2-6, 6-4, 7-5.Former tournament winner Caroline Wozniacki beat number seven Samantha Stosur, 6-2, 6-1.Stosur has never done particularly well on grass, losing in the second round at the last two editions despite reaching semi-finals here.Japans Misaki Doi accounted for Spanish eighth seed Carla Suerez Navarro 3-6, 6-4, 6-1Play was staged at a breakneck pace as officials worked to get the programme of well over 20 singles matches caught up after rain the day before.Other seeded victims were Italian Sara Errani, Romanian Irina Begu and Czech Lucie Safarova.Radwanska, the 2008 champion, who played the Wimbledon final in 2012, needed just 47 minutes under the sun at Devonshire Park to advance. It was very tough conditions today, the first day that it was really windy, Radwanska said. And with her powerful game, sometimes its hard to find a right rhythm from the beginning. It was not an easy match for the first round. Im still happy that I could win that one-and-a-half sets and ready for the next one.Radwanska moves directly into a showdown with former fellow Wimbledon runner-up Eugenie Bouchard after the unseeded Canadian booked her spot 6-3, 6-1 over Romanian 15th seed Irina Begu.I love the grass and Im really glad to be back here, said Radwanska, the 2015 losing finalist to Switzerlands Belinda Bencic. Bouchard is also up for the challenge.Ive had some (recent) results that I wasnt satisfied with, so coming into this week I really kicked myself in the butt, she said.I told myself to go after it and not have any regrets.Double Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, the number five seed, beat Hungarian Timea Babos 6-4, 7-6 (7/5) while Slovak 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova advanced against Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-3, 6-3.

England's Plunkett seals stunning Sri Lanka tie

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM, United Kingdom, June 21, 2016 (AFP) - Tailender Liam Plunkett hit a six off the last ball of the match as England achieved a remarkable tie in the first one-day international against Sri Lanka in Nottingham on Tuesday.England, set 287 to win, collapsed to 30 for four and 82 for six.But a stand of 138 between man-of-the-match Chris Woakes, who made an ODI-best 95 not out, and Jos Buttler (93) revived their chances. After England had seen their hopes of victory disappear in a final over where they needed 14 to win, Plunkett drove the last ball from Nuwan Pradeep for a six over long-off to the delight of a capacity crowd at Trent Bridge.England finished on 286 for eight in just their eighth tie at this level, with Sri Lanka having thrashed them by nine wickets in their previous ODI encounter in Wellington at the 2015 World Cup. Woakes and Plunkett put on an unbroken 50 in 28 balls. It was nice to get that one out, Plunkett told Sky Sports. Woakesy put us in a great position and we bat all the way down. Its good for the team... if you have a wobble up top you can carry on.England captain Eoin Morgan added: Jos Buttler, Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett have got us out of a hole at the end.Jos Buttler called on his experience to guide the innings through and Chris Woakes played out of his skin.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews top-scored for his side with 73 and Seekkuge Prasanna blasted a quickfire 59 after England captain Eoin Morgan won the toss.Warwickshire all-rounder Woakes took two for 56.Mathews then took two early wickets as England collapsed before they bounced back under the floodlights.I thought we had the game in the bag for most of the overs, said Mathews.Unfortunately the yorker fell just off line and went for a six. For Pradeep, it happens. Unfortunately for bowlers, it happens.England would have been happy with a target of 287 on a ground where last year they made 350 for six against New Zealand -- their highest winning score batting second in an ODI.But it looked an imposing total as they lost four wickets inside nine overs.Jason Roy (three) was plumb lbw to Mathews.Fellow opener Alex Hales (four) fell on his Nottinghamshire home ground when he chipped Suranga Lakmal to mid-wicket.Joe Root (two) then played on to medium-pacer Mathews.Roots Yorkshire colleague Jonny Bairstow, recalled to one-day duty after a superb return of 387 runs, including two hundreds, during Englands preceding 2-0 Test series win over Sri Lanka, holed out for three after being dropped on nought.Morgan made a brisk 43 before he was caught behind off Pradeep, who then removed Moeen Ali to leave England in dire straits at 82 for six.But Buttler went to a run-a-ball fifty with a straight six off Prasanna. Buttler eventually fell when a leaping Dasun Shanaka at long-on pulled down what looked like a six off leg-spinner Prasanna.Woakes and Plunkett got Englands target down to 30 off the last two overs. And that became 14 off the last six balls.Woakes took two off the first ball before digging out a yorker for a single that left Plunkett on strike.Plunketts one got Woakes facing again but he couldnt manage a run and England needed 10 off the last two balls.Englands ninth-wicket duo scrambled a three to leave them wanting six off the last ball for a tie with Plunkett facing. But the fast bowler connected sweetly to finish on 22 not out.Woakes, who might not have played had injured fellow all-rounder Ben Stokes been fit, faced 92 balls.Earlier, Mathews and Prasanna took Sri Lanka to a competitive total with a fifth-wicket stand of 68.Prasanna cemented his big-hitting reputation with four sixes in five balls before he was caught and bowled by Woakes. The five-match series continues with another day/night clash at Edgbaston on Friday.

Samuels and Ramdin set Australia tough target

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Marlon Samuelss first-ever hundred against Australia and a record-breaking partnership with Denesh Ramdin lifted the West Indies to a competitive 282 for eight batting first in the eighth match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International Series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday.Dismissed off the last ball of the innings for 125, an innings highlighted by 14 fours and two sixes off 134 deliveries, Samuelss masterful innings followed a match-winning 92 in the last meeting between the two teams in St Kitts a week earlier.Amazingly, they were his first two scores over 50 in ODI cricket against the Australians for more than 14 years.Ramdin, who matched his senior partner shot-for-shot in an entertaining innings of 91, joined Samuels at the crease with the West Indies faltering at 31 for three in the ninth over after Steve Smith had won the toss and chose to field in a match the World Cup-holders must win to advance to Sundays final at the same venue. They put on 192 for the fourth wicket, a new record for the West Indies against Australia as it surpassed the mark of 149 set by Clive Lloyd and Rohan Kanhai in the inaugural World Cup final at Lords exactly 41 years earlier.During the course of his innings, Samuels went past the landmark of 5,000 ODI runs while Ramdin became the first West Indies wicketkeeper to reach the plateau of 2,000 runs in this format of the game before Mitchell Starc broke the partnership by bowling Ramdin as he missed an attempt at a leg-side heave. Two of the three sixes in his 92-ball innings were consecutive straight hits off Starc, the left-arm fast bowler finishing with figures of three for 51. He should have also claimed the wicket of Samuels but wicketkeeper Matthew Wade failed to hold onto the chance offered when the Jamaican batsman was on 65.James Faulkner and Scott Boland took two wickets each, however Australia struggled in the absence of a specialist slow bowler with Aaron Finch and Glenn Maxwell combining for five comparatively economical overs. That reliance on pace had appeared justified at the start of the West Indies innings, though, when Starc dispatched openers Johnson Charles and Andre Fletcher while Josh Hazlewood accounted for Darren Bravo via a diving slip catch by Smith within the first nine overs.

Football: Gomez guides Germany into Euro 2016 knockouts

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Mario Gomez struck as world champions Germany beat Northern Ireland 1-0 in Paris on Tuesday to qualify for the Euro 2016 knockout phase as winners of Group C.Drafted in to address the goal-scoring problems witnessed in Germanys 0-0 draw with Poland, the on-loan Besiktas striker netted from Thomas Muellers pass in the 30th minute at Parc des Princes. That Germany did not win more handsomely was due largely to the excellence of Northern Irish goalkeeper Michael McGovern. But it was enough to preserve their position at the top of the group on goal difference above Poland, who beat Ukraine by the same scoreline in Marseille.Joachim Loews side will now turn their thoughts to a last 16 tie against either Albania, Slovakia or the third-place team in Group F -- which is yet to conclude -- in Lille on Sunday.Michael ONeills Northern Ireland, meanwhile, must wait to have their qualification confirmed. They finished third in the group, but their 2-0 win over Ukraine last week puts them in a strong position to go through as one of the four best third-place teams in what is their first European Championship finals.ONeill kept faith with the team that had overcome Ukraine, but whereas his side had set the tempo in Lyon, they were immediately on the back foot against Germany. With full-backs Jonas Hector and Joshua Kimmich pushing high up on either flank and Jerome Boateng and Toni Kroos lofting passes behind the Northern Irish defence, Germany effectively took up residence in the final third.McGovern was solicited three times in the first 12 minutes, saving alertly with his body and feet from Gomez, Mesut Ozil and Mario Goetze, who dropped into an attacking midfield role to accommodate Gomez up front.Mueller twice went close, thrashing a shot across goal and then striking the base of the right-hand post with a plunging header, before creating the opener for Gomez.Gomezs subtle pass sent the Bayern Munich forward scampering through and after luring McGovern from his line, he showed great awareness to lay the ball off for Gomez, who steered the ball through a thicket of defenders and into the net.Mueller then placed a shot against the bar from a Hector cut-back, while Gomez could only scuff meekly at McGovern when Ozils pass and Goetzes dummy left him one-on-one.All Northern Ireland offered in response was a Jamie Ward shot that went straight at Manuel Neuer, but their green-clad fans remained unbowed, volubly belting out their famous ode to flaming striker Will Grigg.Goetzes luck did not change in the second half as he was brilliantly thwarted again by McGovern before sliding Hectors cross wide at the near post, and he was soon replaced by Andre Schuerrle.Kyle Lafferty, Northern Irelands top scorer in qualifying, also entered the fray, replacing Conor Washington, but still Germany dominated, with McGovern again taking centre-stage.The 31-year-old goalkeeper, who plays for Scottish club Hamilton Academical, saved one-handed from Sami Khediras drilled effort and then produced a superb finger-tip stop to tip away a firm header by Gomez.

Football: Poland ease into last-16 over hapless Ukraine

Posted:

MARSEILLE (AFP) - A second half strike by substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski booked Polands ticket into the last-16 at Euro 2016 and sent Ukraine home without a point. The Group C win in Marseille propelled Poland further than they have ever gone in a European Championship and they will meet Switzerland in the last-16.For the first time in Polish history we have qualified from the Euros group stage, the first time in three attempts, coach Adam Nawalka said. The 30-year-old Blaszczykowski was put on the substitutes bench, but his left-footed curler seven minutes after his second-half introduction decided the tie.Blaszczykowski has a great influence on the way we play, he showed that tonight once he came off the bench, he increased the quality of our play, said Nawalka.I count on him in the coming game, certainly he will start from the first minute, he added. With two 1-0 wins against Northern Ireland and the Ukrainians either side of a scoreless draw against Germany, Poland finished in second place in Group C on goal difference. After defeats to Germany and the Irish, Ukraine were already eliminated before the game in the Stade Velodrome. They have become the first team to go five matches without a goal in Euro history. With pride at stake for Mykhailo Fomenkos men though and a chance of topping the Group C table beckoning for Poland, both teams attacked from the off.Polands formidable strike pair Arkadiusz Milik and Robert Lewandowski each had early chances, the Bayern Munich star volleying the more clearcut of the two over Andriy Yatovs crossbar.Ukraines Andriy Yarmolenko should have scored on the quarter hour but chipped wide when one-on-one against Lukasz Fabianski.Lewandowski found more room than in the previous two games and had a drive deflected wide on 20 minutes, but from the half-hour Ukraine began to assert themselves. With impressive teenager Olexandr Zinchenko, 19, orchestrating from midfield, Ukraine began to stretch Poland on occasion.Winger Yevhen Konoplyanka drilled a low effort narrowly wide on the half hour. Soon after left-back Bohdan Butko crossed when a shot seemed a better option. But with lone striker Roman Zozulya proving ineffective, Ukraine could not find their first goal since their opening game at the Euro 2012 tournament that they co-hosted with Poland.Instead, it was Polands sub Blaszczykowski, one of four switches by Nawalka, who broke the deadlock with a delightful strike.Fed by Milik with a reverse pass on the right of the area in the 53rd minute, he worked the ball onto his left foot and curled a shot inside the far-post to send the Velodrome, decked out mainly in Polands red and white, into raucous celebration.A minute later, with the fans still jumping, Polands own 19-year-old Bartosz Kapusztka nearly made it two but fired wide of both Pyatov and the post. The Poles eased up after that, a Milik header well wide with 15 minutes to go the nearest they came to making it two.In truth Mykhailo Fomenkos men rarely troubled Fabianski. Although captain Ruslan Rotan, later awarded man-of-the-match, forced him to dive eight minutes from the end and Zozulya headed narrowly wide soon after, two second-half blasts over the bar from Konoplyanka and Zinchenko were more typical of Ukraines miserable tournament. It was a difficult match today it was maybe even more difficult than against Germany, Fabianski said. We didnt have as much possession as we wished, but despite the fact that we didnt play particularly well we won, he added.Ratan blamed Ukraines mentality for his sides forlorn Euro 2016 experience. We have to work on the psychological level of the team not the sporting level, he said.We have very good young players so in the future we will see a stronger Ukraine, he added.I dont have any complaints about the players, Fomenko said. My only wish would be that the experience that they have acquired here will be used later, that if they work hard on the pitch they will also be able to use their chances in front of goal.

India's Shami backs pink ball after domestic debut

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Indian bowler Mohammed Shami Tuesday backed the use of the pink ball in cricket after its first-ever appearance in a multi-day game in Kolkata, a possible precursor to a day-night Test later this year.Shami led his Mohun Bagan team to a thumping victory against the Bhowanipore Club in a four-day inter-club final hosted by the Cricket Association of Bengal.Shami bagged seven wickets in total to be named man of the match on Tuesday in an impressive comeback from injury before Indias tour of the West Indies in July.I would prefer playing with the pink ball in comparison to the red ball. Its a great invention and I hope it prospers, Shami said after the match. Here we have two sessions under lights and just one in daylight and as a bowler I would enjoy that. I believe players and the audience would love it.If it remains dry, there is a chance of getting reverse (swing), the 25-year-old pacer said. The match, broadcast live in India, drew steady crowds according to television commentators. The success of the match is expected to have a bearing on attempts by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to host a day-night pink ball Test against New Zealand in October. The board announced earlier this month that the domestic Duleep Trophy tournament in September would for the first time be played under lights with a pink ball.Australia and New Zealand played the inaugural day-night Test in Adelaide with a pink ball last year, attracting huge crowds in a boost to the struggling five-day format.

Australia win toss and put Windies in to bat

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Australian captain Steve Smith won the toss and put the West Indies in to bat in the eighth match of the Tri-Nation One-Day International Series at Kensington Oval in Barbados on Tuesday.Victory for either team will confirm a place in Sundays final, whatever the result of the last preliminary match on Friday between the West Indies and South Africa.West Indies have omitted out-of-form fast bowler Jerome Taylor from the squad so pacer Shannon Gabriel makes his ODI debut in a team that will still place great emphasis on the effectiveness of frontline spinners Sunil Narine and Sulieman Benn.Australia have retained the same eleven from the rain-ruined no-result against South Africa on Sunday and will rely on the fast bowling firepower of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland to give them the early advantage in what is a must-win situation in their final preliminary match of the competition.Teams: West Indies: Jason Holder (captain), Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher, Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Denesh Ramdin (wicketkeeper), Kieron Pollard, Carlos Brathwaite, Sulieman Benn, Sunil Narine, Shannon Gabriel.Australia: Steve Smith (captain), Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, George Bailey, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Wade (wicketkeeper), James Faulkner, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Josh Hazlewood.Umpires: Richard Kettleborough (ENG), Gregory Brathwaite (BAR).Match Referee: Jeff Crowe (NZL).
