Warner hits half century as Australia thrash Windies Posted: PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Australia wobbled near the finish yet still made an immediate statement in their opening match of the Tri-Nation Series at the Guyana National Stadium on Sunday, whipping the West Indies by six wickets in the second fixture of the tournament.Put in to bat on a pitch that once again made strokeplay difficult, the West Indies collapsed from the relative comfort of 50 for one to be dismissed for 116 off just 32.3 overs, losing the last nine wickets for only 66 runs on the way their lowest-ever total in a One-Day International against Australia in the Caribbean.Australia then wasted little time in getting to the modest target, David Warner stroking an unbeaten 55 to ensure that the scheduled day/night fixture was over with almost 25 overs to spare despite the loss of three wickets for seven runs with the end in sight. Spinners Sunil Narine, with two wickets in one over, and Sulieman Benn caused the discomfort but it was not enough to pull the hosts back from the abyss. The emphatic victory earned Australia a bonus point to move ahead of the West Indies in the three-team standings before Tuesdays final game at Providence against South Africa.Boosted by a four-wicket win in the tournament-opener against the South Africans at the same venue two days earlier, the West Indies plummeted back down to earth at the feet of the World Cup-holders, whose frontline spinners Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa did the bulk of the damage with three wickets apiece after the usual effective opening burst from Mitchell Starc.Playing his first international match for more than six months after being sidelined by injury, the left-arm fast bowler breached the defences of openers Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles to finish with figures of two for 37 from nine overs. He showed signs of rustiness in delivering five wides and a no-ball, however his lethal pace proved more than a handful for the West Indies top order.Starcs tally of ODI wickets is now at 92 in his 47th match and should he take eight more before the end of this competition he will eclipse Pakistans Saqlain Mustaq for the record as the fastest to 100 wickets in terms of matches played in this format of the international game.Charles topscored with a chancy 22 while all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was last out for 21, Aaron Finch taking the catch at long-on to give Zampa his third wicket.Notwithstanding the turgid surface, the home batsmen contributed to their swift demise with a succession of poor shots, exemplified by Darren Bravos loose cover-drive at seamer Mitchell Marsh which offered a straightforward catch to Zampa at cover.Lyon, the experienced off-spinner, had an almost instant impact in disposing of Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard off successive deliveries. Pollard, whose unbeaten 67 guided the West Indies to victory over the Proteas two days earlier, attempted a heave over long-on to be taken by Warner on the boundary.Jason Holder gave mystery spinner Narine first use of the new ball from one end in hopes of an immediate breakthrough at the start of the Australian reply, but it was left to the captain to separate the opening pair as Warner and Finch got off to a flying start with a succession of boundaries on both sides of the wicket. They had put on 44 by the eighth over when Finch was leg-before for 19 in Holders first over, giving the gangling Barbadian his 50th wicket in One-Day International cricket. |
Australia punish woeful Windies Posted: PROVIDENCE (AFP) - Australia made an immediate statement in their opening match of the Tri-Nation Series at the Guyana National Stadium on Sunday, routing the West Indies for just 116 after putting the hosts in to bat in the second fixture of the tournament. It was the West Indies lowest total in a One-Day International against Australia on home soil.Boosted by a four-wicket win in the tournament-opener against South Africa at the same venue two days earlier, the Caribbean side came crashing back down to earth at the feet of the World Cup holders.Australias frontline spinners Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa did the bulk of the damage with three wickets apiece after the anticipated opening burst from Mitchell Starc.Playing his first international match for more than six months after being sidelined by injury, the left-arm fast bowler Starc breached the defences of openers Andre Fletcher and Johnson Charles to finish with figures of two for 37 from nine overs. He showed signs of rustiness in delivering five wides and a no-ball, however his lethal pace proved more than a handful for the West Indies top order.Charles top-scored with 22 while all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite was last out for 21, Aaron Finch taking the catch at long-on to give Zampa his third wicket. On a pitch that once again made strokeplay difficult, the home batsmen contributed to their swift demise with a succession of poor shots, exemplified by Darren Bravos loose cover-drive at Starc which offered a straightforward catch to Zampa at cover.Lyon, the experienced off-spinner, had an almost instant impact in disposing of Marlon Samuels and Kieron Pollard off successive deliveries. Pollard, whose unbeaten 67 guided the West Indies to victory over the Proteas two days earlier, attempted a heave over long-on, only to be taken by David Warner on the boundary.None of the home batsmen appeared keen to offer any resistance and Australias ruthlessness, discipline and safe hands in the field proved too much for the West Indies to handle. |

Tennis: Djokovic wins French Open, completes Career Grand Slam Posted: PARIS, June 5, 2016 (AFP) - Novak Djokovic captured a first French Open at the 12th time of asking on Sunday, becoming just the third man in history to hold all four Grand Slam titles at the same time. The world number one downed old rival Andy Murray 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 to claim a 12th career major and join Don Budge in 1938 and Rod Laver, in 1962 and 1969, as the only players to simultaneously possess the French Open, Australian Open, US Open and Wimbledon trophies.Djokovic, 29, also put himself halfway to the calendar Grand Slam, last achieved by Laver 47 years ago.But he did it the hard way as the final reached a tense conclusion, being broken in the eighth game of the fourth set as he served for the title and then squandering two championship points in the 10th before he sealed victory when Murray netted a backhand. Its a very special moment, the biggest of my career, said Djokovic, one of only eight men to complete the career Grand Slam and who had lost his previous three finals in Paris.I felt today something that I never felt before at Roland Garros, I felt the love of the crowd.Djokovic imitated former three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten by drawing a giant heart in the Paris clay before collapsing inside it.I drew the heart on the court, like Guga who gave me permission to do. My heart will always be with you on this court.Playing in his 20th final at the majors and sixth in succession, the Serb superstar is the first man since Jim Courier in 1992 to win the Australian and French Opens back-to-back.Victory also allowed Djokovic to stretch his winning record over 29-year-old Murray to 24-10 overall and 8-2 in Grand Slams.Murray, the world number two and the first British man in the final in Paris since Bunny Austin in 1937, remains with two Grand Slam titles as he failed to become the first winner of the French Open since Fred Perry 81 years ago. What Novaks achieved in the last 12 months is phenomenal, winning all the Grand Slams in one year is an amazing achievement. Its so rare in tennis, and for me personally, it sucks to lose the match, said Murray. Before a ball was hit, spectators stood to applaud Muhammad Ali after an image of the boxing legend, who died Friday, appeared on the giant video screen high up on the Philippe Chatrier court.- Stressful ending -====================Djokovic admitted to a pre-match TV interviewer that it was certain to be an emotional afternoon although he was quickly into his stride, breaking Murray to love in the first game and shrugging off having to play five days in the last six.The British star broke back to level before reeling off the next four games for a 4-1 lead as Djokovics game quickly and unexpectedly unravelled.Murray remained in charge, finding time to loudly berate a French television interviewer for climbing uninvited into his players box overlooking the court.Djokovic then argued with umpire Damien Dumusois for refusing to have a point replayed at 15-0 as Murray served for the first set.But the Serb was horribly out of sorts even before that spat with his 13 unforced errors proving fatal. The world number one had to shake off a break point in the opening game of the second set before Murray obligingly imploded, dropping serve to fall 2-0 behind.Djokovic misread the geometry on a dropshot which would have given him a double break in the fourth game but he was soon 4-1 to the good. The top seed remained ruthlessly dialled-in, broke again for 5-1 and levelled the final when Murray dumped a service return into the net.Djokovic, with the Paris crowd loudly on his side for the first time in four final appearances, broke for 2-1 in the third set which became 4-1 off a sublime running, backhand, cross-court drop-shot.The Serb saved four break points to go to 5-1 before securing the set against a weary-looking Murray who had spent five hours longer on court than Djokovic and played two five-setters in the opening rounds to get to his first French Open final.Djokovic kept his foot on Murrays throat, breaking in the first game of the fourth set as the second seed carried on a running argument with the umpire over the positioning of the overhead camera. The Serb broke to love for 5-2 and history was just moments away. However, there was still time for a twist as he cracked when serving for the title before finally sealing the triumph after three hours on court. |
