Oil prices slip ahead of OPEC meeting

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - World oil prices fell Tuesday as traders eyed this weeks crucial OPEC oil meeting and key Chinese data.In New York trade, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in July lost 23 cents at $49.10 per barrel.Brent North Sea crude for July fell seven cents to $49.69 a barrel in London. The cautious trade came ahead of the meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries in Vienna beginning Thursday to review the market and production levels. It comes as crude prices have rebounded from their January lows under $30 a barrel, easing some of the pressure on the producers group to cut output to strengthen prices. There is little expectation that oil ministers are likely to come to any agreement on production quotas or freezes, said CMC Markets analyst Michael Hewson. However that scarcely matters, given the current direction of travel for oil which currently looks well-supported just below the $50 a barrel level. It will be the first OPEC meeting with the new Saudi oil minister Khalid al-Falih, who replaced the venerable Ali al-Naimi in early May.The market has gained support in recent weeks due to production outages in Canada and Nigeria, but at least in Canada output is expected to quickly pick up.Meanwhile traders expect Chinese manufacturing data due on Wednesday to set the tone for the market. If the data is favorable it could indicate a pick-up in crude demand in the worlds largest energy consumer.

Pound sinks as 'leave' vote rises in Brexit polls

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The pound sank against the dollar and euro Tuesday after fresh polls showed British voters more in favor of quitting the European Union.Just over three weeks before the referendum on pulling out of the EU, the Guardian/ICM polls showed the leave vote at 52 percent against 48 percent for staying, a surprise reversal in sentiment. The poll matched the trend seen in other surveys. For example, the Financial Times survey showed the stay vote still ahead but the gap between the two narrowed to three percentage points from six points a week ago. That rekindled nervousness in markets, where breaking from the 28-country union is seen as likely to spur significant markets turmoil and slow or stall the British economy. The pound sank by 1.0 percent to $1.4478, and the euro also gained 1.0 percent at 0.7689 pence. The dollar was little-changed against the euro despite mostly good economic data on rising home prices and a rebound in consumer spending that supported the Federal Reserve moving to raise interest rates in the next two months.CME fed fund rate futures put a 22.5 percent likelihood on an increase at the Feds June 14-15 meeting, while the odds for a July 26-27 meeting rise were nearly 60 percent.

Twitter moves to curb nastiness at Periscope

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - Twitter on Tuesday moved to further stifle abusive commentary at its live video streaming application Periscope.A new tool introduced by the one-to-many messaging service lets people viewing Periscope broadcasts quickly report what they feel are inappropriate comments.Small groups of randomly selected viewers will then be polled, with votes determining whether they agree that comments are abusive or spam. Those found guilty as charged will be temporarily suspended from commenting further in the related Periscope broadcast, according to Twitter.Repeat offenders will eventually be blocked from commenting for the remainder of a broadcast. One of the unique things about Periscope is that youre often interacting with people you dont know; that immediate intimacy is what makes it such a captivating experience, Periscope chief executive and co-founder Kayvon Beykpour said in a statement. But, that intimacy can also be a vulnerability if strangers post abusive comments.Beykpour depicted the new tool as a way to transparently tap into the viewing community to help moderate bad actors.Periscope allows anyone to broadcast live to a global audience and enables viewers to interact in real time. The use of impromptu juries of viewers to judge abuses will work in tandem with pre-existing tools for reporting or blocking nastiness, according to Twitter.Twitter and other Internet titans face the challenge of letting people connect and share online while preventing bullying, threats, and other foul behavior. The Internet was expected to facilitate better exchanges between the public and news media. But vile and hateful comments changed all that.

Pakistan captain says Amir over spot-fixing scandal

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistans one-day captain Azhar Ali threw his support behind Mohammad Amir on Tuesday for the teams forthcoming tour of England, saying the spot-fixing episode is behind the pacer.Amir, 24, is seen as Pakistans main weapon for the teams tour of England, where they will play four Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 between July and September.Amir has returned strongly since his five-year ban for spot-fixing was lifted in September last year, taking five wickets in the two one-day internationals against New Zealand in January and as many wickets in 11 Twenty20 games.Ali said the sordid episode is firmly behind his bowler. The 2010 case is past (for Amir) and now we need to look forward, said Ali, when asked if the case still haunts Amir.Amir, along with then Test captain Salman Butt and pace partner Mohammad Asif, was charged for taking illegal money in return for deliberate no-balls during the Lords Test in August 2010.The three were briefly jailed in the UK before returning to Pakistan to serve out the rest of their ban. Its been a while now since the case, Amir has gelled with us well. It could have been tough had he come straight for such a tour but now after playing with us for long, things have settled for him, said the captain.Ali said the toughest phase of Amirs comeback has since passed but noted that his return to England could spur additional stress.I know England was the place where the incident (in 2010) happened but hopefully he can handle the pressure the same way he did on his comeback (in January). However, the captain said the team is prepared to back Amir and would deal with any issues if they arise. But still if anything happens we as a team will handle it. We have full faith in him to deliver, said Ali of the left-arm bowler who took 17 wickets in the 2010 series and was the man of the series for Pakistan.Pakistan will play two warm-up games in the first week of July before the first Test starts at Lords from July 14.

Zimbabwe axe coach, captain before India games

Posted:

HARARE (AFP) - The merry-go-round in Zimbabwes cricket structures completed another cycle on Tuesday as the board approved a raft of changes less than two weeks before India arrive for a short tour.Coach Dav Whatmore, captain Hamilton Masakadza and convenor of selectors Kenyon Ziehl were all sacked after Zimbabwe Cricket completed its review of the teams performance at the ICC World Twenty20 in India in March, where Zimbabwe failed to make the group stage.Masakadza and Ziehl had been in their positions for less than a year. Masakadza was appointed captain in January following Elton Chigumburas resignation, while Ziehl replaced Givemore Makoni as convenor of selectors last July.Whatmore took over as coach shortly before last years World Cup in Australasia and was given a four-year contract last May.However, performances failed to improve during his tenure, with Zimbabwe regularly losing to Associate nations and dropping down both the one-day international and Twenty20 international rankings.A ZC media release said that former South Africa fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, who has been serving as Zimbabwes bowling coach since February, would take over from Whatmore in an acting capacity until the appointment of a substantive head coach. It also said that vice-captain Graeme Cremer would replace Masakadza as captain on an interim basis, while former South Africa all-rounder Lance Klusener had been hired as a batting coach on a two-year contract.Former Sri Lanka batsman Marvan Atapattu had filled the same role as a consultant during the World Twenty20.ZC also announced that Tatenda Taibu had accepted the position of selection chief, almost four years after he retired from cricket at the age of 29 to dedicate his life to his church work.He will have additional responsibilities in development and high performance, and will also assist ZC in bringing former Zimbabwe players back into local cricket, the release said.Former captain Taibu had numerous run-ins with ZC as a player, most recently in 2011 when he claimed that ZC had just painted a house thats about to fall.At the time ZC had revamped its domestic structures and was about to return to Test cricket after a self-imposed exile, but Taibus words proved prophetic as the organisation subsequently slipped into a spiral of debt from which it has never recovered.Despite being a Full Member nation with the ICC, Zimbabwe are currently ranked 11th in ODIs, below Afghanistan, and 12th in T20 cricket, where they are also behind the Netherlands.Zimbabwe recently dropped off the ICCs Test rankings table because they had not played the required number of matches over the past three years. Their last Test was in November 2014.A second-string India squad will arrive in Harare next week for three ODIs and three T20Is, which take place at Harare Sports Club between 11 and 22 June.

Bayliss backs Cook to top Tendulkar total

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - England coach Trevor Bayliss believes Alastair Cook has it in him to surpass India great Sachin Tendulkar as Test crickets all-time leading run-scorer.Cook became just the 12th player in history to score 10,000 Test runs during the course of his unbeaten 47 as England beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets in the second Test at the Riverside in Chester-le-Street on Monday. The England captain was also the first Englishman to achieve the feat and, at 31 years and 157 days, the youngest to get to the landmark, breaking Tendulkars record by more than five months.Cook is unlikely ever to play white ball international cricket again having been dropped from the one-day side prior to last years 50-over World Cup.But even without that burden, Tendulkars aggregate tally of 15,921 Test runs is still some way off for left-handed opener Cook, who now has 10,042 to his credit. However, given Cook has scored at a rate of around 1,000 runs a year for the past decade, only a career-ending injury or a sharp decline in form could deny him the chance to surpass Tendulkars haul.It will be about how long he wants to keep doing it, said Bayliss. But certainly there is time on his side, so there is no reason he couldnt if his heart is still in it and his will to do it is still there, the Australian added.Former Sri Lanka coach Bayliss is no doubt of Cooks quality. He is right up there with any of the best international players. He has these powers of concentration, he said.He is not the biggest stroke-player of all time - (but) he knows his game very well, he is very patient and he sticks to it.To be able to do that over the period of time he has played and score as many runs as he has is a fantastic effort.Victory at the Riverside, the headquarters of north-east county Durham, saw England take an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-Test series with Sri Lanka.England quickly announced an unchanged 12-man squad for next weeks third Test at Lords. That means they still have the option of giving a debut to Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball.Fast bowler Steven Finn, who plays at Lords for Middlesex, could be vulnerable if England want to assess Ball in international match conditions ahead of their upcoming home Test series against Pakistan. But Bayliss indicated Finn and struggling number three batsman Nick Compton, another Middlesex man, would get a fair run to prove their worth. There have been discussions over the last month or so, but we have been about giving guys the opportunity to show us what they have got, said Bayliss. The team has been a winning one, so there is no reason to change it just at the moment.

Yorkshire coach Gillespie rules out Australia role

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie has confirmed he will stay with the English county champions instead of applying for a position on Australias backroom staff.Gillespie met Australia coach Darren Lehmann this week and it is believed his former international team-mate asked if he was willing to become Australias bowling coach. But former Australia fast bowler Gillespie now claims no job offer was made by Cricket Australia and he has contacted Lehmann to inform him he will not be applying for one if it was.He mentioned that there was a role coming up with Australian cricket, Gillespie told BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra on Tuesday.I want to make it very clear there was no job offer from Darren - it was merely gauging interest.Gillespie was strongly linked with Englands vacant head coach position last year, but the job was eventually given to his compatriot Trevor Bayliss. The 41-year-olds reputation grew after he inspired Yorkshire to successive County Championship titles in 2014 and 2015, while they have lost only four of their 70 Championship matches under his leadership. However, Gillespie has always insisted he is happy with Yorkshire and he confirmed he was concerned about the time away from his family that an international role would entail.I said thanks for the chat and I would get back to Darren the next day, Gillespie said.I confirmed to him that I am not going to apply for a role with Cricket Australia - so we can end all the speculation right now.At this point in time in my life, I am not prepared to be away from my family for that length of time. So, it is not on the radar. I am not applying for any international cricket roles.Gillespie now appears set to continue dividing his time between Yorkshire and his existing role in charge of Adelaide Strikers in Australias Big Bash domestic Twenty20 tournament.

Anderson replaces Broad atop Test bowler rankings

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - James Anderson has become the worlds number one ranked Test bowler for the first time in his career after moving above England new-ball partner Stuart Broad in the latest International Cricket Council standings.Anderson, Englands all-time leading wicket-taker, broke through the 450 mark on his way to a man-of-the-match display in a nine-wicket victory at Chester-le-Street on Monday which sealed a 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka. The 33-year-old has already taken 18 wickets in the first two Tests of this English season ahead of next weeks Sri Lanka finale at Lords.Andersons eight-wicket haul at Chester-le-Street, the headquarters of north-est county Durham, saw Anderson climb two places in the ICC rankings published on Tuesday, with former number one Broad now third behind India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.Anderson is the fourth England bowler to top the ICCs Test standings following Ian Botham (1980), Steve Harmison (2004) and Broad, who rose to the number one position following the Johannesburg Test against South Africa earlier this year.Australia captain Steven Smith remains the number-one ranked Test batsman, followed by Englands Joe Root and Kane Williamson of New Zealand.
