Football: Van Gaal denies Champs League crucial for signings

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal said on Friday that big-name players would still want to come to Old Trafford even if the club failed to qualify for next seasons Champions League.Tuesdays 3-2 defeat by West Ham left United fifth in the Premier League table, just outside the top four Champions League spots on offer to English clubs, heading into Sundays final round of domestic top-flight matches. Now United must beat Bournemouth and hope fourth-placed Manchester City lose to Swansea on Sunday if they are to qualify for the Champions League.Such is Citys vastly superior goal difference that a draw, barring a freakishly huge United win, would see them into the Champions League at their local rivals expense. But Van Gaal insists that Uniteds ability to attract players will not be affected by their possible failure to qualify for next seasons Champions League. And the Dutchman is pressing ahead with close season plans and drawing up summer transfer policy with the clubs hierarchy, despite the intense scrutiny over his own future at Old Trafford.Last year we were also in that situation and in the end we qualified, Van Gaal said. And still there were players that I wanted that we didnt purchase because you are dependent on a lot of circumstances. I cant discuss that with you because its a question for the board not the manager.Creative playersVan Gaal, however, acknowledged that FA Cup finalists United must improve their attacking play next season.I am always evaluating and always adapting to the situation where we stand for, he said. Its always the same, you have to evaluate yourself but also your staff and players, and then with that kind of people you have to communicate and listen to each other and that Im doing. That shall be done also next season. The principles are always the same, except when one of the members of my staff or players or board members can convince me of other arguments.I can say that we have to improve still. I dont think we have to improve defensive organisation too much, now we have to score more in our attacking way. That is also what I have said before this season -- we need creative fast players in attack. We have to change that, and that is very important.Van Gaal was not mentioned by United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward as he announced financial figures on Friday that showed the club were on course to earn more than half a billion pounds in a single year.Neither in a written statement nor in a subsequent conference call with investors -- which reporters could listen to but not participate in -- was Van Gaal referred to amid ongoing speculation he could be replaced by his one-time Barcelona assistant and former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. However, Woodward stressed the importance of Uniteds youth system, something which many fans felt Van Gaal only reluctantly called upon when an injury crisis left him with little choice this season.Uniteds reputation for producing their own first-team players dates back to the 1950s and Woodward said on Friday: As we look back on our season, I am delighted by the emergence of our young players. In the last two seasons alone, some 15 players from our Under-21 squad have appeared 130 times in our first team.Marcus Rashford made an immediate impact, scoring goals on his debut in Europe and then two more on his Premier League debut against Arsenal.Three of our regular first-team players -- Rashford, (Jesse) Lingard, (Cameron) Borthwick-Jackson -- are locally-born academy players, who have been with the club since they were eight-years-old.

Football: FIFA names woman as secretary general for first time

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - FIFA named a Senegalese UN diplomat as its first ever female secretary general on Friday, a surprise and historic move announced at a congress to overhaul the scandal-plagued organization.Fatma Samoura, 54, comes from outside the football world, having worked with the United Nations for 21 years. She is currently based in Nigeria for the UN Development Program.FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who announced her appointment during the annual congress in Mexico City, said his future number two was a great person with experience managing big organizations, budgets and staff. We have to be serious when we say we embrace diversity and we believe in gender equality, Infantino said. She will bring a fresh wind to FIFA, somebody from outside, not somebody from inside, not somebody from the past but somebody new.Samoura will take her post by mid-June after undergoing an eligibility check administered by an independent review committee.Today is a wonderful day for me, and I am honored to take on the role of FIFAs secretary general, Samoura, who has also worked at the World Food Program, said in a statement.I also look forward to bringing my experience in governance and compliance to bear on the important reform work that is already underway at FIFA.The former secretary general, Jerome Valcke of France, was sacked in January and banned from football for 12 years over misconduct in television deals and World Cup ticket sales -- one of the many scandals that hit FIFA.Germanys Markus Kattner had been serving as interim secretary general since then.FIFA rebornFIFA officials gathered in the Mexican capital to formally implement changes that were adopted at an extraordinary congress in February to overcome a deep corruption crisis.Today we pass from the words to the actions, from the proclamations to the facts, said Infantino, who was elected in February after his predecessor Sepp Blatter was brought down by the scandal. You will see us reborn through this congress, he added. In another step towards restoring trust, the North and Central American and Caribbean football confederation (CONCACAF), which has been in the eye of the corruption storm, elected a new president on Thursday.Canadian football chief Victor Montagliani became CONCACAFs fourth president in five years after his three predecessors were ensnared in corruption allegations, with the last one arrested in December.FIFAs new council, meanwhile, resumed on Tuesday the process to select the host of the 2026 World Cup, which had been frozen since last year over claims of misdeeds in awarding the tournaments to Russia for 2018 and Qatar for 2022.After all the issues, or criticisms, or whatever, which happened around the last World Cup bidding process, it is absolutely crucial for FIFAs credibility that we have a bullet-poof bidding process in place for 2026, Infantino said.He noted that human rights requirements will be examined during the process for the first time and that bidders that fail technical requirements will be excluded. But the scandals keep haunting world football. On Monday, Infantinos former boss, Michel Platini, said he will step down as head of European football body UEFA after failing to overturn his ban from all football-related activity over allegations that he received a dubious two million Swiss franc ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) payment from FIFA.Earlier this month, FIFA banned two top executive members from Chile and Colombia for life over bribes.New membersWorld footballs governing body must now ratify reforms that were approved by the special congress, which renamed the disgraced executive committee as the FIFA Council and pruned its powers. The reforms came into force on April 27, 60 days after the vote. The governance reforms include term limits, transparency in salaries and more powers for the secretary general. In other decisions, the congress faces prickly votes over the admission of Gibraltar and the former Serbian province of Kosovo, taking the world body to 211 members. The FIFA Council recommended on Tuesday that both be admitted, which would entitle them to participate in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.FIFAs executive originally rejected Gibraltars bid, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ordered that the congress take a vote on the British territory, which is also claimed by Spain.

Oil prices dip after strong rally

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Friday, with analysts saying traders booked profits from the previous days strong rally ahead of the weekend amid general hope that the oversupply is easing.US oil had hit a six-month high Thursday as the International Energy Agency pointed to the glut easing in the second half of this year.On Friday, OPEC said the oversupply that has sent prices sliding since mid-2014 may be easing as a result of reduced output by countries outside the 13-nation oil-producing cartel.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June closed 49 cents lower at $46.21 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. For the week, however, WTI jumped more than three percent. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July slipped to $47.83 a barrel, down 25 cents from Thursday but still registering a weekly gain of more than five percent. The small decline Friday is just a pullback, said Carl Larry, director of oil and gas for consulting firm Frost & Sullivan. We probably have a bit of bullish sentiment ahead but people are trying to get flat here as we have a whole week ahead of us, he said.Larry pointed out that US refinery usage and product demand were higher. He predicted a major drop in US commercial crude inventories this week because of the Canadian oil taken offline amid massive wildfires in Albertas oil-sands region.Tim Evans of Citi Futures also noted light profit-taking ahead of the weekend, and said a stronger dollar after a better-than-expected US retail sales report was also encouraging some selling.

Oil prices rebound strongly on easing supply worries

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - World oil prices recovered strongly this week, reaching 2016 highs as experts forecast an easing to the global supply glut that has weighed heavily on markets for almost two years.OPEC and the advisory body the International Energy Agency (IEA) both pointed to lower supplies on the horizon and in a week in which the United States revealed an unexpected drop to its commercial crude inventories.Prices surged towards the end of this week following the US stockpiles report, research group Capital Economics said in a note to clients.Whats more, on Thursday, the IEA decreased its forecast for non-OPEC production and increased its estimates for demand this year.New Yorks main oil contract reached $47.02 a barrel on Thursday -- the highest level since early November.By Friday around 1630 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June stood at $46.24 a barrel, compared with $43.74 a week earlier.Brent North Sea crude for July surged to $47.78 a barrel from $44.43 one week earlier. After falling at the start of the week,, crude futures began to rally on Tuesday, as traders focused on lingering oil producer shutdowns in Canada and plummeting output in Nigeria. The market extended gains as the Department of Energy said that US crude stockpiles slid by 3.4 million barrels last week. Analysts consensus had been for a rise of 750,000 barrels. The drawdown may well have been due to the wildfires in Canada (whose)... main export market is the US, said Fawad Razaqzada, analyst at traders City Index.Prices rallied further on Thursday, with the US benchmark reaching the highest level this year after the International Energy Agency predicted that the crude oversupply would shrink in the second half of 2016.The IEA forecast that the stubborn oil glut will shrink dramatically this year, following wildfires that have disrupted Canadas output and on buoyant Indian demand.Friday saw some profit-taking from the weeks strong gains, even as the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries said that the global crude glut that has squeezed the market and sent prices plunging over the past year may be easing as a result of countries outside the oil producing cartel dropping their production. The oil market has been rocked by chronic oversupply in recent years, badly hurting producers but translating into lower prices at the petrol pumps for consumers.Despite the weeks gains, the market remains far below the $100-a-barrel mark of mid-2014 -- and sank underneath $30 earlier this year on the back of abundant supplies.Nigerian price supportSigns that supplies are coming down won further support this week from data showing that Nigerias oil output had slumped to a 22-year low because of pipeline sabotage and increasing unrest that has seen major companies evacuate staff.Figures compiled by Bloomberg indicated that output in Africas biggest oil producer has fallen below 1.7 million barrels per day for the first time since 1994.Rebels seeking a fairer share of revenue for locals in the countrys oil-rich southern delta are increasingly targeting facilities, posing a fresh security challenge for President Muhammadu Buhari. The oil market has not priced in a supply disruption risk premium over the past 18 months given that global inventories are ample enough to weather short-term hiccups. However, acute and lengthy disruptions may soon become too large to ignore, said Helima Croft, head of commodity strategy at RBC Capital Markets.

Stronger US retail data boosts dollar

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar jumped on Friday after a better-than-expected rebound in US retail sales last month erased some doubts about the strength of the US economy. But the yen also gained, shrugging off more efforts by Tokyo to talk it down from recent highs. The greenback was up 0.6 percent on the euro and the pound, and 0.7 percent on the Canadian currency. The rebound in US retail sales, which grew 1.3 percent in April over March, suggested the end of the first-quarter slump and gave support to the Federal Reserves policy body, the Federal Open Market Committee, to raise interest rates later this year. This data is not enough to convince the FOMC of a faster pace of real GDP growth this quarter, said PNC Bank chief economist Stuart Hoffman.Nevertheless, he said, in the June FOMC meeting it will be used by the hawks among the policymakers to try to pull the Fed off the dovish rate stance it has held in recent meetings. In Tokyo, Bank of Japan chief Haruhiko Kuroda repeated a pledge that he was ready to unleash more stimulus measures to boost the sagging economy, comments that would normally dampen the currency.Kuroda said the central bank doesnt have to wait to launch more monetary easing as it gauges the impact of its negative-rate policy. But coming after weeks of such threats and promises from top officials, the markets appeared to have deaf ears. The yen pushed up 1.0 percent on the euro and 0.3 percent on the dollar.

Gun, grenade and bomb attack kills 16 north of Baghdad

SAMARRA (AFP) - Gunmen attacked a cafe with gunfire and grenades north of the Iraqi capital and later detonated suicide belts against security forces in pursuit, officials said on Friday. The deadly raid targeted a cafe that was popular with local fans of Real Madrid football club and drew condemnation from the Spanish government. The club even announced that its players would wear black armbands for their league game on Saturday. At least 16 people were killed and 30 wounded, including several members of the security forces, in the attack in the town of Balad and the ensuing chase, they said.Officials said the gunmen were from the Islamic State group, which claimed the attack in an online statement.A group of armed men from Daesh (an Arabic acronym for IS) disguised in security forces uniforms attacked a cafe in Balad at around midnight, using grenades and gunfire, Ammar Hekmat al-Baldawi, a deputy governor of Salaheddin province, told AFP.They fled to a nearby farming area. They blew themselves up when the security forces and some residents chased them and got close, he said.Baldawi said the attack took at place around midnight (2100 GMT on Thursday) and that the hunt for some of the attackers was ongoing. There were five or six attackers -- four of them blew themselves up. The hunt is not over because we think there could be up to two of them still on the run, he said.He said 16 people were killed, including several members of the police and the Hashed al-Shaabi paramilitary organisation that includes most Shiite militias. The modus operandi was a departure from the suicide car bombings IS has used as its main tactic to inflict maximum casualties in Shiite towns and cities.Spanish condemnationBalad is a large town 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Baghdad. Its population is predominantly Shiite but it is surrounded by many Sunni-dominated rural areas.A police lieutenant colonel who declined to give his name said the shooting claimed 12 lives, and added that four other people, two police and two members of Hashed forces, were killed later when one attacker detonated his suicide belt.A doctor at Balad hospital gave the same toll. The Spanish foreign ministry issued a statement condemning in the strongest terms the terrorist attack carried out today against a Real Madrid supporters club. This is a particularly heinous act because the aim of the terrorists were civilians who gathered for the sole purpose of following a sporting event, the statement said. The president of the Spanish Football League, Javier Tebas, also reacted by saying football continues to be a target of terror. The cafe used by the Real Madrid fans as a regular gathering place was known by residents as one of the few in the area to be open late, and there was no suggestion that the attackers targeted it for hosting football enthusiasts.Real Madrid club also issued a statement condemning the attack and announced that its players would wear symbolic black armbands as a sign of their mourning and respect for their Saturday league fixture. In its statement posted on social media, IS said a commando of three jihadists stormed a gathering of Hashed members, shooting several dead, before one of them blew himself up as rescue services tried to evacuate the wounded. It said the two other attackers killed several others when they detonated their explosive belts. The jihadist organisation said the attack was the latest in a campaign to honour Abdel Rahman Mustafa al-Qaduli, the groups second-in-command, who was killed in a coalition strike in March.IS has been steadily losing ground to Iraqi forces on the battlefield lately, but has upped its campaign of bombings against civilians. At least 94 people were killed in three suicide attacks in Baghdad on Wednesday, the deadliest day in the Iraqi capital this year.

IMF weighs new loan for struggling Afghan economy

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The International Monetary Fund said Friday that it is considering new financial support for the Afghanistan government as the countrys economy continues to stumble. The IMF lauded the countrys gains under a just-concluded IMF-monitored program to close vulnerabilities with reforms in the government budget process and in the financial sector.Despite difficult circumstances, the authorities implemented the program successfully, the IMF said in a statement. But given the countrys ongoing domestic conflict and the drawdown of international military forces from the country, it said, Afghanistans economic situation remains very difficult. The Washington-based global lender said that it expects the economy to grow only about two percent this year, barely faster than last year. And that pace is at risk to a further deterioration of security conditions and slowing donor aid.On top of that, it added, the countrys banking system needs more reform to eliminate vulnerabilities. The IMF said it will be discussing with Kabul authorities this month a new Extended Credit Facility loan the government requested to help it address some of these problems. The ECF would help tackle some of the challenges and thus assist in improving the conditions for sustainable growth and in catalyzing support from donors, it said.

Djokovic ousts Nadal in Rome quarters

Posted:

ROME, (AFP) - World number one Novak Djokovic stretched his winning streak over Rafael Nadal to seven matches on Friday with a thrilling 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) victory to book his spot in the Rome Masters semi-finals.Djokovic, the defending champion, now faces the winner of the Fridays last quarter-final, between Kei Nishikori of Japan and Austrian Dominic Thiem, as he bids for a fifth title in the Italian capital.Nadals last win over the seemingly unstoppable Serbian goes back to his victory in the final of Roland Garros in 2014.As a seven-time champion in Rome, Nadals commands plenty of support from the fans at the Foro Italico.Nadal looked to have the measure of Djokovic by the time he won his first break at 3-2, but it seemed only to tighten Djokovics resolve.Djokovic converted a third break point to pull level in the eighth game when Nadal misfired on a forehand. In a pulsating 12th game, Djokovic upped the pressure and was rewarded on his fourth set point.Nadal should have pulled the match level when he was 5-4 up in the second set, but a dogged Djokovic had other ideas. With Nadal leading 5-4, Djokovic saved no less than five set points before breaking back on his first set point to level the set 5-5.In an epic 11th game, Nadal raced to love 30 only for Djokovic to fight back and take the win after a Nadal return landed wide.Djokovic was pumped, and despite Nadal serving to love to level 6-6, Djokovic moved up a gear in the tie break. He raced to 3-1 lead but saw Nadal defy his service game to claw his way back with a spectacular turn and shot at the net that had the crowd on its feet.Yet Nadal was wasteful again. He squandered the chance to level when a return landed outside the tramlines, handing Djokovic a crucial 4-2 tiebreak lead from which he never recovered.Djokovic and Nadal have now met 49 times and the Serbian has taken their career match to 26-23.
