Football: Ibrahimovic lifts French Cup in PSG swansong

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored two goals and set up another as Paris Saint-Germain defeated bitter rivals Marseille 4-2 to clinch a 10th French Cup title on Saturday in the Swedes final game with the club.Blaise Matuidi struck PSGs opening goal inside two minutes at the Stade de France, but Marseille hit back just 10 minutes later through on-loan Newcastle midfielder Florian Thauvin.Ibrahimovic then converted a penalty immediately after half-time to restore the capital clubs lead, before he played in Edinson Cavani to add a third goal on 56 minutes. The 34-year-old Swedish star signed off in trademark spectacular style with his second of the evening, the 156th and final goal of his PSG career, eight minutes from time as Laurent Blancs side repeated last years domestic treble despite a late consolation from Michy Batshuayi.Im very happy to win my final match with a fantastic team, said Ibrahimovic.Weve worked hard over the four years. It was an incredible adventure for me, especially when you know how things were when I arrived and how they are now.Its mission accomplished. I didnt learn to speak French but Ive won everything. I came, I saw, I conquered. With the Ligue 1 crown and French League Cup already in the bag, PSG were aiming to move level with record 10-time French Cup winners Marseille in a repeat of the 2006 final, won 2-1 by Paris.Ibrahimovic, who last weekend broke Argentine striker Carlos Bianchis single-season club record of 37 league goals, was aiming to bring down the curtain the down on a glittering four-year stay in the French capital in fitting fashion having already helped PSG to 11 trophies.Fast startHowever, Abdelaziz Barrada fired an early warning signal to PSG in their quest for another title when the midfielders 25-yard drive flashed just wide of Salvatore Sirigus right-hand post with less than a minute gone.Blancs side were ahead though with their first attack as Angel Di Maria, provider of 18 assists in his first Ligue 1 campaign, delivered another from a wicked right-wing cross that was turned in by Matuidi from close range. But Marseille, who were hoping to salvage their season after finishing 13th in the league, responded on 12 minutes as Thauvins strike from just outside the area clipped Thiago Silvas leg to wrong-foot Sirigu.Thauvin was fortunate to escape punishment when he blocked Ibrahimovics goalbound strike with his hand shortly before the interval, but Marseille were caught out seconds after the restart as Nicolas Nkoulou bundled over Matuidi inside the box.Ibrahimovic slotted past Steve Mandanda from the penalty spot to put PSG back in front on 47 minutes, before Paris record goalscorer played in Cavani to steer home a third nine minutes later after Chile international Mauricio Isla lost possession in midfield.Matuidi then released Ibrahimovic to stroke home a fourth on 82 minutes and guarantee PSG a 10th successive win over Marseille, despite Batshuayi converting a rebound three minutes from the end after Sirigu could only parry Benjamin Mendys low shot.Blanc then withdrew Ibrahimovic, who will leave Paris when his contract expires at the end of June, to a rapturous ovation late on in the final act of a remarkable chapter in PSGs history.

Top US commander for the Middle East visited Syria: Centcom

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The leading US commander for the Middle East visited northern Syria on Saturday, officials said.General Joseph Votel, head of US Central Command (Centcom), met with US military advisors working with Syrian Arab fighters and with leaders of the Syrian Democratic Forces, a Centcom spokesman said, declining to provide more details.During the secret trip which lasted several hours, the Centcom commander visited a handful of locations, CNN reported as it accompanied Votel, the highest-ranking US military official to travel to Syria since its civil conflict began in 2011.US special operations forces are helping train fighters in Syria to fight the Islamic State (IS) group as the United States leads a coalition of countries in an air war against the extremists in Iraq and Syria.IS has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq to create a self-styled caliphate. Football: Van Gaal defiant as Mourinho speculation mounts

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal defended his achievements after reports that Jose Mourinho is poised to replace him overshadowed his sides FA Cup triumph against Crystal Palace.A memorable extra-time winner by Jesse Lingard brought United a 2-1 victory at Wembley on Saturday, ending the clubs 12-year wait for a record-equalling 12th FA Cup, but within minutes of the final whistle, reports were circulating that Mourinhos appointment is imminent.Van Gaal refused to discuss the matter, telling reporters I dont want to talk about leaving the club, but argued that despite Uniteds failure to qualify for the Champions League, he had performed well in the circumstances. When asked if he had established a platform for future success, he replied: Of course. I have said when I started that we are in a process of transition. That I have already said a lot of times in press conferences, so I repeat myself. I have to refresh my squad and I have done it.In spite of the many injuries this season, we are still in the race (for fourth place) and now we have lifted the cup. Thats a title, and it was three years ago that United (last) had a title.Im very proud that Im the first manager after the period of Sir Alex Ferguson (to win a trophy). I have made a picture with him, because thats history. The BBC reported that Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea in December, would be officially announced as United manager early next week.Asked if he expected to keep his job, Van Gaal gestured to the FA Cup trophy, which was sitting on a table in front of him, and said: I show you the cup and I dont discuss it with my friends of the media, who already sacked me for six months.Which manager can do that, what I have done?Van Gaal departed the press conference room in sarcastic fashion, hoisting the cup aloft and saying: Thank you for the congratulations.Heart and passionThe speculation about Van Gaals position took the gloss off a famous day for United and in particular 23-year-old Lingard, the academy graduate, who has forced his way into the starting XI following several loan spells. The winger settled an affair that his side had shaded in the 110th minute, fizzing a right-foot volley into the top-left corner shortly after United centre-back Chris Smalling had been sent off for two bookable offences.Substitute Jason Puncheon had put Palace ahead in the 78th minute, slamming the ball past David de Gea from a narrow angle, but United equalised within three minutes as Marouane Fellaini chested down skipper Wayne Rooneys cross for Juan Mata to volley home.Palace manager Alan Pardew tasted defeat in an FA Cup final for the third time, having been on the losing team when United beat the south London club in a replay in 1990 and overseen West Ham Uniteds loss on penalties to Liverpool in 2006.He praised his players for playing with heart and passion and said that the club had conducted itself with dignity. His chief complaint centred around referee Mark Clattenburgs decision to award a first-half free-kick for a foul on Connor Wickham by Smalling, rather than play advantage and allow the striker to race into the box with the ball.I was really disappointed with the Connor decision in particular, Pardew said.Because you could see he was going to get up first and obviously the advantage was really with us. He had a free pass to Yala (Yannick Bolasie) for a tap-in. To be pulled back was really harsh.Pardew celebrated Puncheons opener by gyrating on the touchline and he said afterwards that he had got carried away in the moment.I enjoyed that moment, he said. In a cup final, as a manager its difficult to enjoy moments. Forgive me my dance. Its just because I enjoyed it.

Taliban leader Mansour 'likely killed' in US drone strike

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour was targeted and likely killed Saturday in a US drone strike in a remote area of Pakistan along the Afghan border, a US official said. The airstrike, authorized by President Barack Obama, also killed a second adult male combatant as the two traveled in a vehicle southwest of the town of Ahmad Wal, but no civilians were killed, the official said under condition of anonymity.Mansour was the target and was likely killed, in the strikes, which occurred around 6:00 am (1000 GMT) and were carried out by multiple unmanned aircraft operated by US Special Operations Forces, the official said.Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement that Mansour has been the leader of the Taliban and actively involved with planning attacks against facilities in Kabul and across Afghanistan, presenting a threat to Afghan civilians and security forces, our personnel, and Coalition partners.Mansour was appointed head of the Taliban in July 2015 following the revelation that the groups founder Mullah Omar had been dead for two years.Since the death of Mullah Omar and Mansurs assumption of leadership, the Taliban have conducted many attacks that have resulted in the death of tens of thousands of Afghan civilians and Afghan security forces as well as numerous US and Coalition personnel, Cook said.Officials are still assessing the results and will provide more information when available, he added.Keep expectations in checkMichael OHanlon of the Brookings Institution think-tank said Mansours death may help the US effort in Afghanistan modestly. The war has been going on for so long, the Taliban has so many leaders and so much ability to function at the local level even without strong central guidance, that we would be well advised to keep expectations in check, he said.US lawmakers welcomed the news and some called on the Obama administration to take a firmer stand.I appreciate President Obama for authorizing the attack, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said, adding I strongly encourage the Obama Administration to not withdraw troops until conditions on the ground permit their withdrawal.Republican Senator John McCain, head of the Senate Armed Forces Committee, said he hoped this strike against the Talibans top leader will lead the administration to reconsider its policy of prohibiting US forces from targeting the Taliban.Part of movement from startBorn in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar sometime in the early 1960s, Mansour was part of the Taliban movement from its start in the 1990s and has effectively been in charge since 2013, according to Taliban sources. He shuns public appearances. The few pictures believed to be of him show a thickset man with the dark beard and turban that are virtually the uniform for senior Taliban cadres.Mansour spent part of his life in Pakistan, like millions of Afghans who fled the Soviet occupation. He succeeded Omar, the one-eyed warrior-cleric who led the Taliban from its rise in the chaos of the Afghan civil war of the 1990s.Mansur has been an obstacle to peace and reconciliation between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban, prohibiting Taliban leaders from participating in peace talks with the Afghan government that could lead to an end to the conflict, Cook said.In addition to fighting on the ground and pressure from all sides to negotiate, the Taliban also faces the challenge of halting the expansion of the Islamic State group in Afghanistan, which has been recruiting disaffected fighters.

England beat Sri Lanka by an innings in first Test

Posted:

LEEDS, (AFP) - James Anderson took 10 wickets in the match as England thrashed Sri Lanka by an innings and 88-runs inside three days in the first Test at Headingley on Saturday.Sri Lanka, following on, were dismissed for 119 in their second innings as England went 1-0 up in the three-match series.Lancashire paceman Anderson took five for 29 which, added to his five for 16 in Sri Lankas meagre first innings 91, gave him match figures of 10 for 45.England wicket-keeper Jonathan Bairstow was named man-of-the-match for making 140 in Englands total of 298 on his Yorkshire home ground and holding nine catches in the game.Only Kusal Mendis with 53 offered much in the way of meaningful Sri Lanka defiance with the bat on Saturday.Sri Lanka resumed on one without loss with the overcast conditions that greeted them similar to those in which they had collapsed on Friday.Dimuth Karunaratne avoided a pair but fell for seven when caught head-high by Bairstow after the left-hander got an outside edge to a near-unplayable Anderson ball that bounced and cut away off the seam. The same combination then accounted for Kaushal Silva (14).Either side of the wickets, Mendis, who like Karunaratne made a first-innings duck, drove both Anderson and fast bowler Steven Finn for well-struck fours. But he was fortunate on 23 when a hard edge off Anderson went through the hands of leaping third slip James Vince.Mendis was reprieved again on 29 when he edged Finn only for a diving Bairstow, in a rare blemish this match, to drop the low one-handed catch. And off what turned out to be the last ball before lunch, Mendis should have been out for 47 when he edged a seemingly comfortable chance off Broad to third slip only for Vince to again put him down.Rain stopped play for more than two hours and when the match resumed, England captain Alastair Cook brought on off-spinner Moeen Ali.His second ball saw Mendis get a thin glance, with Bairstow failing to hold the difficult legside chance. But Cooks gamble was rewarded two balls later when Dinesh Chandimal chopped an intended cut onto his stumps.Mendis, whose innings was a mix of the streaky and the stylish, then clipped Anderson through midwicket for a boundary that saw him complete a 62-ball fifty including 10 fours.Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews made a Test-best 160 when his side won at Headingley two years ago to claim their first series win in England and he top-scored for the tourists with 34 on Friday. But he only managed five on Saturday before he was caught behind off Broad. And 93 for four became 93 for five after Mendiss luck ran out when, trying to leave an Anderson delivery, he deflected the ball onto his stumps.Either side of tea, Sri Lanka lost their last seven wickets for 26 runs.Anderson, appropriately, ended the match by clean bowling retreating last man Nuwan Pradeep.
