Tough guy Turan seeks to shine on Euro stage

Posted:

ISTANBUL (AFP) - Arda Turan, who rose from a tough upbringing in a working class Istanbul district to join Barcelona in the highest-profile move ever by a Turkish footballer, has to prove his international class at Euro 2016.No other Turkish player comes close to the profile of Turan, who moved to Atletico Madrid in 2011 and became a pillar before moving on to Barcelona, a team he describes as one of the best in football history.Despite his dream move all has not been plain sailing for Turan at Barca. He had to wait until 2016 for his debut due to a transfer ban and he has yet to secure a regular first team place amid rumours the team could sell him.But Turan prides himself on overcoming adversity and nothing could set him apart more than spearheading a successful performance by Turkey in its first international competition in eight years.I think it is a beautiful story right from the start, Turan said of his career in an article for the magazine of his old club Galatasaray this month. Its an example for young people who dream. Because this is a success story. It shows there is a way in a profession by starting right at the bottom and going to the top.One of best teams everTuran, 29, was born in the Istanbul suburb of Bayrampasa in 1987, and his first matches were for the gritty western districts local team Altintepsi Makelspor. After his move to Barcelona, the authorities in Bayrampasa announced that they had named the street where he grew up Arda Turan Street in his honour. He was snapped up in 2005 by Istanbul giants Galatasaray, a club to whom he retains an intense loyalty. Then came Atletico Madrid, where he was a huge favourite with fans and won La Liga in 2013-2014 under Diego Simeone, before his sensational transfer to Barca in 2015.I am part of one of the best teams in the history of the world. I am very happy both for my own career, Turkish young people and the Galatasaray community. I think I can be a good example to everyone, Turan said.Every day I work more and try and be better. Both for my country and for the national team. While Turan insists he has realised his dreams, some Spanish media reports have suggested he is unsettled at Barca after failing to find a regular starting place under Luis Enrique and could be tempted by a move to China.Turan stands out as the most gifted Turkish player of his generation. He is known for his uncompromising style of play. In 2015 Turan appeared to hurl one of his boots at the assistant referee in frustration during a La Liga clash while playing for Atletico.Despite his time in Spain, Turan makes no secret of his patriotism and pride in pulling on the red jersey with the white star and crescent moon. When Turkey qualified for the Euro with a dramatic victory against Iceland in January, images went viral on the Internet of the Turkish hardman, scratched and bloodied after the game, weeping uncontrolled tears of joy.Turan has been quoted in the press expressing his admiration for Turkeys controversial President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, saying in February this year that the football loving-leader was like a friend.Despite living abroad he is rarely out of the Turkish media, with fans glued to his games and as an inescapable presence in advertisements for endorsing products. His love life remains a source of fascination for the gossip columns, breathlessly covering the end of his engagement with actress Sinem Kobal last year and new relationship with Aslihan Dogan.

Cycling: Greipel roars to Giro win, Dumoulin keeps pink

Posted:

BENEVENTO (AFP) - Germanys Andre Greipel powered to victory on the fifth stage of the Giro dItalia on Wednesday, a bunch sprint finish that left Dutchman Tom Dumoulin in the race leaders pink jersey. On the second day back in Italy following three opening stages in Holland, Lotto sprinter Greipel had been looking to redress the balance after seeing compatriot and sprint rival Marcel Kittel (Etixx) claim two consecutive stage wins. But after a ferocious sprint to the finish of the 233km stage from Praia a Mare in Calabria, Greipel, known as the Gorilla for his impressive physique, followed his victory roar by crumbling on the roadside as he tried to recover from his efforts.Arnaud Demare, the French winner of Milan-SanRemo in March, finished a distant second for FDJ with Italian Sonny Colbrelli claiming third place for Bardiani.Afterwards, Greipel said the hard chase to reel in a group of late attacks had added extra weight to his teams workload. It was a really hard chase to bring the four breakaway riders back, said Greipel. Luckily other teams helped but I owe a big thanks to my team. They are a big part of this success. Before the start, I said it would be a nice finish for me and it really was. I was behind the crash but I found my way through and launched my sprint when I saw a gap with 300 metres to go.I hesitated a bit, then I gave it everything. Im really happy.Dumoulin, who races for Giant, took the pink jersey after his time-trial win on the opening stage and reclaimed it on Tuesday when he finished second behind Lampres Diego Ulissi on stage four. The Dutchman will wear it going into Thursdays sixth stage, one of several in the medium mountains that should see the sprinters dropping to the back of the pack.Prior to this years 99th edition, Dumoulin played down suggestions he is among the contenders for overall victory in Turin on May 29, owing to the fact he is looking to peak in time for the Rio Olympics later this summer. And less than a week into his race debut, he admitted: I was told the Giro is a difficult race. Now I know why. Today it was up and down all day and the peloton went crazy in the finale.Dumoulin is expected to defend his race lead on Thursdays sixth stage, but the comparatively short 157km race from Ponte to Roccaraso features the races first mountaintop finish and could see the first skirmishes between race favourite Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) and Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), as well as the climbers looking to loosen Damiano Cunegos grip on the King of the Mountains blue jersey.

Solar Impulse 2 set for next leg in round-the-world flight

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - The Solar Impulse 2 will resume its record-breaking quest Thursday to circle the globe without consuming a drop of fuel, with a flight from Arizona to Oklahoma. The experimental sun-powered plane, piloted by Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard, is set to take off from Phoenix at 3:00 am (1000 GMT).After sustained efforts from the entire team, at the Mission Control Center and on the ground, we have found a clear weather window that gives way for a 17 hour and 50 minute flight to complete the flight to reach the heart of the United States, the Solar Impulse 2 (SI2) team said in a statement. The objective is to reach New York as soon as possibleAfter being grounded for several months to undergo repairs, the plane resumed its round-the-world voyage in April, flying from Hawaii to California. It then flew to Pheonix on May 2.It is expected to make one or two more stops in the United States before landing in New York City. The SI2 was grounded in July last year when its batteries suffered problems halfway through its 21,700-mile (35,000-kilometer) circumnavigation. The crew took several months to repair the damage from high tropical temperatures during the flights final Pacific stage, a 4,000-mile (6,437-kilometer) flight between Nagoya, Japan and Hawaii. The aircraft was flown on that stage by Piccards teammate Andre Borschberg, whose 118-hour journey smashed the previous record of 76 hours and 45 minutes set by US adventurer Steve Fossett in 2006.The plane is expected to cross the United States, stopping in New York before a trans-Atlantic flight to Europe, from where the pilots plan to make their way back to the point of departure in Abu Dhabi.

US oil hits 2016 peak on surprise rise in inventories

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices rallied Wednesday, with US crude finishing at a new 2016 high after official data showed a surprise drop in the countrys commercial crude inventories. The Department of Energy said that crude stocks slid by 3.4 million barrels last week. Analysts consensus had been for a rise of 750,000 barrels. And supplies of gasoline and distillates such as diesel and heating fuel fell more than expected, according to the department data.Matt Smith of ClipperData pointed out that oil prices had already been climbing on supply disruptions due to wildfires in Canadas oil-rich Alberta region and problems with rebels and leaks in a Shell pipeline in Nigeria, Africas biggest oil producer. The inventories fall just added to the push higher. So weve rallied higher on that. It was very surprising, Smith said.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June jumped $1.57 to $46.23 a barrel, its highest settlement since last November. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July, the European benchmark, closed at $47.60 a barrel, leaping $2.08 from Tuesday. The Department of Energy also said that US oil production fell by 23,000 barrels per day to 8.80 million barrels per day last week, down from 9.6 million barrels last June. US producers, especially those in shale oil areas, have been retrenching due to the low prices.Market attention also focused on the closure of a key Shell pipeline in Nigeria following a leak.Petroleum prices are drawing some support from the latest pipeline closure in Nigeria, which has underscored a recent drop in output on an increase in militant attacks in the Niger Delta, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Evans noted that total OPEC production increased in April despite the drop in Nigerian output. And so while the market may be in the mood to focus on production losses, overall supply may be another story, he said.

Yen turns higher as market rebuffs Tokyo warnings

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The yen pushed higher Wednesday after being talked down for two days by Japanese officials worried about an overly strong currency. The British pound, meanwhile, was stable against the dollar but lower on the euro ahead of Thursdays Bank of England policy meeting.Warnings of intervention to keep the currency from strengthening by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Finance Minister Taro Aso had managed to push the yen lower on Monday and Tuesday, but traders appeared unconvinced in Wednesdays session. The yen pushed up 0.8 percent to 108.39 per US dollar, and up 0.3 percent against the euro to 123.85 yen.The strength of the currency -- the yen is up more than 10 percent against the dollar this year -- led Toyota on Wednesday to warn that net profit in the current fiscal year would fall by about a third, because it sells far more cars and trucks outside of Japan than it does domestically. Our earnings over the past several years have been boosted by (favorable) exchange rates, said Toyota president Akio Toyoda. But we recognize that this trend has changed significantly.Toyota said its new forecast was based on the dollar buying around 105 yen, well down from an average 120 yen in the previous year. The Bank of England meets on monetary policy Thursday with recent economic indicators slightly deteriorated and the potentially destabilizing Brexit vote on leaving the European Union just six weeks away. The pound may struggle to retain the rebound from earlier this week should the Bank of England curb its economic outlook, said David Song of DailyFX.Even though the BoE is widely anticipated to retain its current policy in May, a downward revision in the central banks growth and inflation forecast may dampen the appeal of the British pound as it drags on interest-rate expectations.

Neither trials were held nor punishments given. Lawyers will observe a ‘Black Day’ and boycott the courts today (Thursday) to mark the incident. With thousands awaiting the arrival of then Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and the lawyers’ movement in its full swing, the city of Karachi witnessed a bloodbath on its roads that day. Containers were placed and the city saw a virtual lockdown. Those who dared crossing the barriers and heading towards the airport to greet the CJP, were brutally gunned down. The slaughter continued throughout the day and long into the night.Lawyers of City Court, High Court and Malir Courts were unable to leave their offices and faced severe difficulties. Even Judges who arrived to the Courts to fulfill their duties had to climb and jump over walls to flee the area. Terrorism ran rampant and the normal hustle and bustle of the city was silenced by thundering sounds of the ammunition.Though the former CJP, being involved in the incident, could not take suo-moto action on the attack, but formed a 5 member larger bench for inquiry of the incident. However, emergency was declared in the country after the attacks. With lawyers leading the movement in jails, the Provisional Constitutional Order (PCO) Judges closed the matter without taking any major action. With passing time the incident has faded into the backdrop, but refuses to be washed away from history as victims of the tragedy still seek justice.
