Oil prices top $50 a barrel but then recede

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices topped $50 a barrel for the first time this year on Thursday as the global supply glut shows increased signs of easing. But the markets quickly gave back early gains and crude finished below the $50 mark for the day.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for July delivery ended down eight cents from Wednesday at $49.48 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after exceeding $50 early in the session. In London, Brent North Sea oil for delivery in July also briefly pushed above the $50 threshold, but closed down 15 cents to $49.59 a barrel. The breaching of $50 follows oil outages in Canada, Nigeria and elsewhere over the last month, and sharp US production cutbacks, that have tightened supply. But it marked an only partial recovery in the market after prices collapsed from over $100 a barrel in mid-2014.They approached $25 a barrel in February due to policy decisions by Saudi Arabia and other power brokers in OPEC against cutting back production as they sought to preserve market share at any price. They have maintained the glut in order to force out more expensive producers, particularly in North America. Some analysts are skeptical oil prices will continue to climb. Despite last weeks decline in petroleum stocks, US oil inventories remain near historic highs.Other bearish factors include increased production in Iran and an uncertain demand outlook in China and other key markets.I think people feel like $50 dollars is a kind of sell-point where the people whove made their profits are going to get out of the market, said Mike Lynch of Strategic Energy & Economic Research. So it may act as a temporary ceiling.Analysts also caution that the move above $50 a barrel could trigger some shale producers in the US to resume production after halting work due to low prices. They also see that OPEC might not move to cap or cut back production in its June summit in Vienna as some have hoped. From a fundamental point of view, we see the further gains as an indication that oil is becoming more expensive, but as also reducing any incentive on OPEC to trim output at its upcoming June 2 summit in Vienna, said Citi Futures analyst Tim Evans. On the contrary, it encourages OPEC producers to pump away.

Euro gains on dollar for second day

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro pushed higher against the US dollar for a second day Thursday even as odds appeared to rise for a Federal Reserve rate hike in the next few months. The euros gain remained modest. The common currency bought $1.1194, up from $1.1154 Wednesday. The greenback also slipped to 109.76 yen from 110.21 yen.The picture for higher US rates rose as better-than-expected data on the US industrial sector, home building and the jobs market combined with bullish comments from the Fed policymaker Jerome Powell.Powell said in a speech that an increase in the federal funds rate would be appropriate fairly soon, if the data trend holds up.That sentiment could get another boost Friday if as expected the government revises upward its estimate of economic growth in the first quarter. The first estimate came in at a disappointing 0.5 percent annual rate.Economic data has taken on even greater importance in the run-up to the next (Fed) meeting in mid-June, said James Chen of Forex.com.In addition to next weeks non-farm payrolls employment numbers, tomorrows preliminary GDP (second release) will be critical in helping to fulfill (or not) the Feds criterion of improving economic data.Analysts are looking for an increase in the GDP estimate to 0.8-0.9 percent, but Chen pointed out that in recent quarters the upward revisions have frequently outpaced expectations. The British pound eased Thursday after a steady climb that paralleled rising signs that the Brexit referendum in four weeks will support Britain remaining in the European Union. On Wednesday, World Trade Organization Director-General Roberto Azevedo became the latest international official to warn of the economic consequences of Brexit. It is very important, particularly with regard to trade, which is something very important for the British economy, that people have the facts and that they dont underestimate the challenges, he told the Financial Times. Pretty much all of the UKs trade (with the world) would somehow have to be negotiated.

Mathews says it's time Sri Lanka came on in the cold

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews said the weather can be a factor but it cant be an excuse as his side looked to draw level in their Test series against England.Mathews men were thrashed by an innings and 88 runs in the first Test as they went 1-0 down in the three-match series at a cold and grey and Headingley ground in Leeds, northern England last week.Similarly miserable conditions have greeted Sri Lanka in Chester-le-Street, with rain preventing any meaningful outdoor practice on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the start of Fridays second Test at north-east county Durhams Riverside ground. Its all a far cry from the searing heat of Colombo and Mathews, speaking to reporters on Thursday, said: Its the coldest weather Ive known playing cricket. It was extremely cold yesterday (Wednesday), added Mathews, who saw his side run round the outfield with players clad in bobble hats and several sweaters.Today its a bit better, and Im hearing it will stay that way for the next three days.More than the actual temperature, it was the overcast conditions which aided swing movement and were superbly exploited by England spearhead James Anderson, who had match figures of 10 for 45, that proved Sri Lankas undoing in Leeds.A pitch with a tinge of green also helped Stuart Broad, Andersons new-ball partner in crime, to seam the ball off the surface at Headingley, where all-rounder Mathewss Test-best 160 set up Sri Lankas series-clinching win two years ago.Similar conditions could well lie in wait at the Riverside, but Mathews is determined there wont be a similar outcome. The weather can be a factor, but it cant be an excuse ... you have to compete, regardless of the conditions, Mathews said. When they (England) come out to Sri Lanka its going to be hot and yes they struggle, but you have to compete regardless of the conditions. You cant control the weather, but we can try to control our performances. It was an embarrassing defeat. Weve had a few days to think about it, and talk about strategies. We have to forget Headingley. Thats simple, the first thing we have to do.The more we think about it, the more disappointed we get.Obviously, you cant erase it -- but we have to move on. Thats what well do.Tomorrow is going to be a fresh start. To stay alive in the series, we have to win.Mathews added: Its a mental adjustment we need, and I hope the boys will be fine. The Sri Lanka captain took some heart from 21-year-old top-order batsman Kusal Mendiss battling fifty in the second innings at Headingley. Its his first time in a Test in England, and he showed a lot of character when the ball was seaming and swinging around, said Mathews. It says a lot about the player. He can take a lot of encouragement out of that, and so can the rest of the batters. But Mathews admitted that facing Anderson and Broad, who have taken a combined 646 wickets in 84 Tests as a pairing, in helpful conditions was no easy task. They are world-class bowlers, especially in these conditions.Despite their ultimately heavy defeat, Sri Lanka did reduce England to 83 for five at Headingley. And Mathews was adamant they could win at the Riverside and end Englands perfect run of five wins in as many Tests at the ground. Its definitely possible, said Mathews. If we play to our potential, and dont think about the weather too much...We have the skill and the talent.

Woakes gets England nod for 2nd Sri Lanka Test

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Chris Woakes will replace the injured Ben Stokes in Englands side for the second Test against Sri Lanka, skipper Alastair Cook said on Thursday.Durham all-rounder Stokes had already been ruled out of the match at his Chester-le-Street home ground starting on Friday after suffering a knee injury during Englands crushing innings and 88-run win in the first of a three-match series at Headingley last week.Warwickshires Woakes, a similar player in that he is a pace-bowling all-rounder, comes into the side in the only change to the England team that won inside three days at Yorkshires headquarters last week after seeing off a challenge from uncapped Nottinghamshire seamer Jake Ball, who once again was kept waiting for a Test debut.Cook, speaking to reporters at a rainy Chester-le-Street on Thursday, said Englands batting order would be adjusted slightly with Jonny Bairstow, who made 140 batting at seven at Headingley, moving up to number six and Moeen Ali promoted to number seven with Woakes in at No.8.This will be the 27-year-old Woakess seventh Test.He marked his inclusion in the squad on Monday by taking a first-class best nine for 36 for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston and earlier this month he scored a hundred in the County Championship.Chris Woakes is going to come in for Ben Stokes, said Cook.Hes going to bat at eight, Jonny and Mo are going to push up.Asked why Woakes had been chosen ahead of Ball, Cook said: We enjoyed playing with the balance of this side.Woakes has had a stop-start Test career since making his debut in 2013 and only averages 21 with the bat and an expensive 63 with the ball.I dont think weve seen the best of him yet in an England shirt, said Cook. But hes in fine form for Warwickshire -- a nine-for and a hundred in the last two weeks. Its disappointing for Ben... Hes got that ability to win or change games of cricket very quickly. But injuries are part and parcel of a side and we need to learn how to play without him.For all that England won convincingly, they were 83 for five before Bairstow and opener Alex Hales, with a Test-best 86, turned the innings around. It was tough conditions, said Cook. One false shot and you were out. The way Alex and Jonny played was outstanding. A few of us could do with a score, added opener Cook, still 20 runs shy of becoming the first Englishman to score 10,000 runs in Tests.Nick Compton, out for a duck at Headingley, has spoken openly of how he feels under pressure for his place after a modest tour of South Africa following 85 in the series opener at Durban.Youre always under pressure when youre playing for England, said Cook.He (Compton) played some good innings in South Africa, certainly at the start of the tour -- that 80-odd, he battled hard and set up a good win. And hes scored two (Test) hundreds already. So he can play at this level. Like all of us, hes only a score away, and he needs a score, but hes in a really good place to do that.England have won all five of their previous Tests at Chester-le-Street, including an Ashes-clinching success wrapped up by paceman Stuart Broad in 2013.But with Durham some 5 million pound in debt and struggling to sell tickets this week, Fridays fixture could be the last Test at the ground.Weve always had great support here, said Cook. When Stuart took those wickets in 2013, the noise and the atmosphere was brilliant. We need to keep playing at each end of the country so people can keep watching Test cricket.I dont know the ins and outs of it. But Durham have a great record of bringing players through, so it would be a shame.
