Posted:

SUKKUR (Dunya News) – Leader of the Opposition and Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) senior leader Khurshid Shah Friday stated that Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif has become really emotional after Panama Leaks revelations and is now viewing politicians as ‘terrorists’. Shah stated that those advising the PM were backstabbers.According to the details, Shah, while talking to the media in Sukkur, said that he wondered who was offering advices to PM, adding that all problems were created by PM himself. He even appealed to the PM in Punjabi saying Nawaz should understand the matter. He further said that he is hoping that the PM will accept Opposition’s Terms of References (TORs) regarding the commission that will be investigating the Panama Leaks issue.Shah further stated that the Opposition’s doors were open if PM ever wanted to discuss the TORs, adding that the Opposition was prepared to talk about things in favour of the nation. The Opposition leader stated that the PM has announced rebuilding Sukkur Bridge. Shah said he hoped his announcement is implemented as well.Shah’s strong rebuttal came as the PM declared that terrorists and his political opponents both wanted to hinder the progress of the country, adding that the country would not have lagged behind in progress if there was no sit-in politics.

London's new Muslim mayor hails 'unity over division'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Londons new mayor Sadiq Khan thanked voters for choosing unity over division as he was elected Saturday, becoming the first Muslim leader of a major Western capital. In a second round run-off, the son of Pakistani immigrants beat Conservative multimillionaire Zac Goldsmith with 57 percent, or 1.3 million votes, giving him the largest personal mandate of any British politician.Khan swept to victory despite repeated accusations from his rivals, including Prime Minister David Cameron, that he sympathised with Islamic extremists -- which he denies. This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division, the 45-year-old said in his acceptance speech, to cheers from supporters.I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again. Fear doesnt make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city.As he spoke, the mayoral candidate for the far-right Britain First party, Paul Golding, turned his back. The victory offered some cheer for Labour after setbacks elsewhere following regional elections across Britain on Thursday, as a row over anti-Semitism in the party that has damaged leader Jeremy Corbyn continued to rage.Congratulations Sadiq Khan. Cant wait to work with you to create a London that is fair for all Corbyn tweeted.Khan replaces the charismatic Boris Johnson and ends the Conservatives eight-year hold on the London mayoralty, a position that has responsibility for transport, housing, policing and promoting economic development.New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was among the first to tweet his congratulations to fellow affordable housing advocate, @SadiqKhan. Look forward to working togetherParis Mayor Anne Hidalgo added on Twitter that Khans humanity, progressivism will benefit Londoners. The victory was also hailed in Tooting, a multi-ethnic area of south London where Khan lives and where he grew up in social housing, before becoming first a human rights lawyer and then a member of parliament.Sadiq Khan will have a unifying factor because he is Muslim, an immigrant, he is from (the) working class, so he understands the working class people and he can associate with them, said Shahzad Saddiqui, a local businessman.Labour losses elsewhereLabour fared less well in other elections on Britains Super Thursday, in which 45 million Britons were eligible to vote. The party came third in elections for the devolved government in Scotland, a one-time stronghold, behind the Conservatives, in a vote won by the incumbent pro-independence Scottish National Party (SNP).Labour retained power in the Welsh assembly, although it lost one seat, and with 118 of 124 results declared, maintained all but one of its local councils in England.Corbyn, a veteran socialist who has faced opposition from centrists in his party since being elected last year, said his party had hung on and surpassed expectations. But critics said Labour should have made more gains given the splits in the Conservative government ahead of the EU referendum on June 23, and its unpopular spending cuts.Matthew Goodwin, politics professor at Kent University, said Labour was in serious trouble. The Labour party is now third in Scotland for the first time since 1910 and it has failed to make a serious impression in southern England, he said.Persuade not divideSNP leader and Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will lead the separatist party into its third successive government in Edinburgh, although the party lost its outright majority. She announced she would lead a minority administration, and played down talk of a fresh independence referendum to follow the unsuccessful one in 2014.The SNP will always make our case with passion, with patience and with respect but our aim is to persuade not to divide, Sturgeon said. The other big story in Scotland was the success of the Scottish Conservatives, who came second with 31 seats. The party has been deeply unpopular in Scotland since the 1980s premiership of Margaret Thatcher but its fortunes have turned around under current Scottish leader Ruth Davidson.Davidson is a charismatic and openly gay 37-year-old whose cheery, no-nonsense style and proficient use of social media has fuelled her partys success.Elsewhere, the anti-European, anti-immigration UK Independence Party (UKIP) secured its first seat in the Welsh assembly and two seats in the London assembly.

Oil prices higher as Canada fire forces more ouput cutbacks

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Crude prices ticked higher Friday as Canadian oil sands producers cut back more output due to the massive Canadian wildfire surround Fort McMurray, Alberta. The spreading fire seems not to have directly damaged oil sands mining sites, but evacuations of more than 100,000 in the area have forced companies to slash production. It is now estimated that up to one million barrels per day of Canadian production has been taken offline, said Matt Smith of ClipperData.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in June rose 34 cents to $44.66 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July closed at $45.37 a barrel, up 36 cents from Thursdays settlement.WTI lost nearly three percent over the course of the week, snapping four straight weekly gains, and Brent shed more than four percent.Smith noted that Canada produces about four million barrels a day of crude oil, and roughly 80 percent of it is produced in Alberta, where output is largely from oil sands. Most of that is piped to the US market. While infrastructure is yet to be damaged, the evacuation of staff in combination with the precautionary closure of pipelines is what is driving the drop in production, Smith said.Tim Evans of Citi Futures said the mounting production losses in Alberta continued to give the market key near-term support, but that could evaporate swiftly if output is restored quickly.Traders may not want the risk that the fire threat diminishes by Monday, allowing output to recover, he noted.Militants attack on an offshore Chevron facility in Nigeria, Africas largest oil producer, also drew traders attention. The drop in Nigerian oil production is also getting some play in the press, although we note that the decline wasnt enough in April to do more than limit the increase in overall OPEC supply, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.

Dollar rises despite mediocre US jobs report

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar mostly rose Friday despite a mediocre US jobs report that did little to alter the Federal Reserves go-slow policy on interest rate increases.Following a spate of weak US data, the Labor Department reported job growth slowed more than expected in April, to 160,000 added jobs, the lowest number since September. You can kiss the chance of a June Federal Reserve rate hike goodbye after todays non-farm payrolls (NFP) report, Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said in a client note. The dollar, which weakened after the jobs data, ended the day a tick higher against the euro, at $1.1403 per euro. It also rose against the pound but slipped 0.1 percent against the yen.Typically, anticipation of a rate increase boosts the dollar as investors seek higher yields. In order for the dollar to rise, we needed to see an unambiguously positive labor market report and unfortunately that did not happen, Lien said.At the same time, while the chance of a June rate hike collapsed, the dollar did not because the NFP report was released in an environment of dollar strength and most investors were positioned for a weak number.

Sri Lanka's Mathews no fan of points system

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has questioned plans to introduce a points system for his sides upcoming tour of England. The proposal is, as happens with the womens Ashes, to aggregate the results of all the international fixtures this season between England and Sri Lanka.A similar scheme is envisaged when Pakistan visit for the second half of the English season, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) holding talks with their counterparts in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.I dont like to move away from the traditional game but whatever the administrators decide well have to go with and move on, Mathews told reporters at Lords on Friday after former England captain Michael Vaughan labelled the proposal a needless over-complication.We have to experience and see whether its good or bad, added the 28-year-old all-rounder.I dont like to move away from the traditions of the game. I like the good old five days, he said.Sri Lankas previous tour of England in 2014 saw them win series in all three formats -- Tests, one-day internationals and Twenty20.The Test campaign was particularly significant for Sri Lanka as it was the first time they had won a series, as opposed to a one-off Test, in England. After clinging on for a draw at Lords, they won a thrilling second and final Test at Headingley off the penultimate ball of the match.Headingley is where this years three-Test series between England and Sri Lanka will start on May 17.One major difference is that the tourists will be without batting greats Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who have both retired from international cricket although left-hander Sangakkara is now playing for English county side Surrey. Between them the pair scored over 24,000 Test runs and Mathews said: We dont have Sanga (Kumar Sangakkara) and Mahela (Jayawardene) any more. But weve got to move on and take up the challenge with who we have in the squad and I believe we can still win if we play to our potential.Weve got some fearless players in our team. That can be a plus point for us.And there was plenty of fearless cricket on show when Mathews struck a brilliant 160 in the second innings at Headingley two years ago to set up his sides 100-run win.It looked as if tailender James Anderson was about to deny the tourists victory until, with just one delivery in the match remaining, he fended at a short ball from paceman Shaminda Eranga and was caught close in.Afterwards a distraught Anderson was in tears and Alastair Cook later admitted he had thought about standing down as England Test skipper after the defeat. That is one moment that we will always cherish for the rest of our lives, said Mathews.Wed never won a Test series in England before and to be able to do that as a team was fantastic. If we can repeat that once again it will be ideal for us.Sri Lanka have coach Graham Ford back for a second stint with the national side after the South African cut short his time with Surrey to rejoin the islanders. It was a really tough decision but nice to be back with the Sri Lankan boys and experience the wonderful fighting attitude that they have and their passion for the game, Ford said.I think, first and foremost we are here to try to win the Test series and I believe we can do that. But with England having both won the Ashes at home and triumphed in a Test series in South Africa in recent months, Ford expects a tough contest. They (England) have played fantastic cricket for a while now. They surprised some people in winning the Ashes convincingly but that certainly sent out a message as to what a good team they are. They played very well in South Africa too.But theres no better way to grow a young team than to play against a really good outfit.

England batsman Root extends Yorkshire deal

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England batsman Joe Root has signed a new contract with Yorkshire that will keep him with the English county champions until the end of 2019, it was announced Friday. The 25-year-old is currently ranked the second-best batsman in the world and is a mainstay of the England team in all formats. As such, his appearances for his native county are few and far between. However, Root said: Im delighted to be committing my future to Yorkshire.Even though I dont play as much as I would like for Yorkshire these days due to my international commitments, I still get a huge buzz wearing the white rose on my cap and representing my county. I couldnt see myself playing cricket for any other county.Yorkshire have given me a great education and foundation as a cricketer and without the support of the players and coaches at Headingley I wouldnt be in the position Im in today with England.Sheffield-born Root made his Yorkshire debut in 2007, with his England Test debut coming in December 2012.He has since played 39 Tests, scoring 3,406 runs at 54.93.

Labour's Khan becomes first Muslim mayor of London after bitter campaign

Posted:

LONDON (AFP/Reuters) -Opposition Labour lawmaker Sadiq Khan was elected mayor of London with 57 percent of the vote, final results showed Saturday, making him the first Muslim mayor of a major Western capital.Khan, the son of a Pakistani immigrant bus driver, won 1,310,143 votes against 994,614 for his main rival Zac Goldsmith, a multimillionaire environmentalist from Prime Minister David Camerons Conservative party. After a negative campaign in which Khan was accused by his rival of sympathising with Islamic extremists, the 45-year-old former human rights lawyer promised in his acceptance speech to be a mayor for all Londoners. This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division, he said after the result was declared at City Hall, to applause and cheers from supporters.I hope that we will never be offered such a stark choice again. Fear doesnt make us safer, it only makes us weaker, and the politics of fear is simply not welcome in our city.As he was speaking the candidate for the far-right Britain First party, Paul Golding, who was lined up with the other loosing candidates behind Khan, turned his back. There were 12 candidates standing in Thursdays election but ten were eliminated in the first round. The final results also included second preference votes for the top two candidates. As New York mayor Bill de Blasio sent his congratulations, Khan had yet to receive official notification of his victory, which would go some way to soothing the wounds of Labour which suffered losses in Thursdays other local elections.Dealt a crushing blow in Scotland, where it came third behind the Scottish National Party and Britains ruling Conservatives, Labour did better than expected in England, saving its left-leaning leader from an early challenge. But the big prize was the London mayor vote, which pitted Khan, 45, who grew up in public housing in inner city London, against Conservative Zac Goldsmith, 41, the son of a billionaire financier.A source close to the count said Khan could not now be beaten in the race. De Blasio said on Twitter: Sending congratulations to Londons new mayor and fellow affordable housing advocate, @SadiqKhan.Khans margin of victory looked set to be narrower than expected in a possible sign that a bitter campaign marred by charges of anti-Semitism and extremism and charges of anti-Semitism in Labour ranks might have taken its toll. The Labour lawmaker replaces Conservative Boris Johnson, who has run the city of 8.6 million people for eight years. A top campaigner for Britain to leave the EU, Johnson is seen as a contender to succeed David Cameron as party leader and prime minister. The Conservatives were keen to keep hold of the post, which does not run the City of London financial district but has influence over government in lobbying for the capital. The mayor is responsible for areas such as policing, transport, housing and the environment.ACCUSATIONSKhan held his lead in the opinion polls, despite accusations by Goldsmith that he has shared platforms with radical Muslim speakers and given oxygen to extremists.Khan says he has fought extremism all his life and that he regrets sharing a stage with speakers who held abhorrent views. The Labour Party accused Goldsmith and the ruling Conservative Party of smearing Khan.Goldsmith denied the charge, saying he had raised legitimate questions over his opponents judgment - but the tactics do seem to have backfired with some voters interviewed by Reuters saying they found the campaign disgusting and slimy. While fighting those charges, Khan, a former human rights lawyer, also distanced himself from the newly elected Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, after a row over anti-Semitism.The Labour leader ordered an inquiry into charges of anti-Semitism after suspending Ken Livingstone, a political ally and a former London mayor, for saying Adolf Hitler had supported Zionism. The impact of the crisis was difficult to gauge in the election of more than 2,700 local officials and new devolved authorities in Scotland and Wales.Compared to the last regional elections in 2011, Labours share of the vote was down 9.2 percent in Scotland and 7.6 percent in Wales, allowing a strong showing for the anti-EU UK Independence Party before a referendum on membership of the bloc on June 23.But, with fewer losses in England than expected, Corbyn was able to rally enough support to prevent an early challenge.Corbyn, who was elected as party leader last year on a wave of enthusiasm for change and an end to establishment politics among mostly younger members, welcomed some of the results and said he would fight to re-establish Labour in Scotland. We hung on and we grew support in a lot of places, he said. But he did little to quell criticism of his leadership in a party which has moved from crisis to crisis, the latest a row over anti-Semitism forcing Corbyn to suspend Livingstone.Richard Angell, director of Labour activist group Progress, said the party had to refocus on issues that concern voters.Corbyn need to shake up his operation, kick out Ken Livingstone as a first step to nailing the anti-Semitism problem and focus on voter-friendly policy, he told Reuters.
