Tennis: Birthday boy Murray masters Djokovic in Rome

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Britains Andy Murray celebrated his 29th birthday in style Sunday by winning his maiden Rome Masters title with a hard-fought win over disgruntled world number one Novak Djokovic.Murray, the number two seed who suffered defeat to Djokovic in last weeks Masters final in Madrid, prevailed 6-3, 6-3 in one hour, 35 minutes. From a total of 32 previous meetings it is only Murrays 10th win over tenniss man of the moment.Well done Andy, you did a great job today. You were just too good, Djokovic said on court after the final. It is only Murrays third clay-court title, after his maiden victories on the red dirt in Munich and Madrid last year, but comes in timely fashion just two weeks before the start of the French Open at Roland Garros.Murray, who cruised into the final with an easy semi-final win over French lucky loser Lucas Pouille early on Saturday, came into the match fresher after Djokovic was forced into a three-hour epic by Japans Kei Nishikori later on Saturday. It was the third three-set match he had played leading up to the final, and amid the challenging circumstances of intermittent rain, it did not take long for nerves to fray.Murray piled the pressure on from the start, earning a trio of break chances in Djokovics first service game.Djokovic saved them all, but two games later Murray grabbed the first break of the match when he forced Djokovic into a backhand error for 3-1.The slippery conditions were not to Djokovics liking and Murray, who had no complaints about the weather, tried to capitalise. He won 16 of his first 19 service points, taking a 5-2 lead with an ace down the T, and then wrapped up the opener with a sublime forehand drop-shot winner to wrap up the set in 46 minutes.Djokovics game, and nerves began to come apart in a second set that saw umbrellas come out and hoods pulled up due to the occasional spattering of rain.Leading 2-1, Djokovic complained to the referee about the lack of a rain stoppage and minutes later, still battling to win the fourth game, he began remonstrating with himself. The Serbian skimmed his racket off the ground in another angry gesture after Murray got the first break of the set in game five. From then on, Djokovics game fell apart as Murray built on his noticeably superior serve, adding variety with drops shots and volleys at the net.Murray broke in the seventh game of the second set for a 4-3 lead, prompting Djokovic -- from his chair -- to start demanding a halt to the game due to rain.He was heard saying he dont want to play any more, adding: My friend, its been raining for an hour. Djokovic underlined the threat of injuries playing in such conditions, but his pleas went unheard.

Tennis: Serena beats Keys to win fourth Italian Open crown

Posted:

ROME (AFP) - Serena Williams has tipped Madison Keys to succeed her as world number one after a 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 Italian Open victory that handed the 21-time Grand Slam champion her first title of the season. It was the first all-American WTA claycourt final since Williams beat her older sister Venus to win her maiden French Open title in 2002.But in the end, Williams power and experience made the difference as she claimed her first title of the year, her 13th on clay and 70th overall.Williams becomes just the fifth woman to achieve such a total in singles after Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf and Margaret Court. It feel greats to win a title, especially on clay, said Williams, who will now prepare for the defence of her French Open title at Roland Garros.Having lost two finals this season, Williams win comes in timely fashion before Paris: It was important to go out there and win one (title). It was a week of shocks in the womens draw, with a number of seeds falling before getting to the business end of the tournament.Keys, 21, is one of several emerging womens players from the US and had wowed the Rome crowd in a battling semi-final against Spanish third seed Garbine Muguruza. She had conceded defeat to Williams on two previous occasions, at the last two Grand Slam events, the US and Australian Opens. On Sunday, Keys started with conviction, breaking Williams in the opening game and taking the first set to a tiebreak. But despite occasionally stunning Williams with a ferocious return of serve and dominating on winners -- 17 to 13 -- Keys paid for unforced errors.Keys, who had eight more unforced errors than Williams, admitted just being in the final with her compatriot had left her feeling nervous. No matter how many times you play Serena, you always go in and you can just feel her presence, said Keys.Thats always an extra thing that you have to be worried about during the match. But for me today it really wasnt so much about how big the tournament was or anything like that.It was really just wanting to go out and do my best and give my best performance.Despite conceding defeat, she was given a strong vote of confidence by Williams.I think Madisons a great player, I really do. Always have. I think shes got potential to be number one in the world, she added. Its always great to hear that from her, said Keys. Shes obviously an amazing champion, and shes won so many matches and tournaments.Hearing that is definitely something that makes me just work harder.Williams pulled out injured from last years event when Russias Maria Sharapova triumphed. In Sharapovas absence, due to an ongoing doping ban, Williams claimed her 13th title on clay, the most of any active player on the WTA Tour, to add to her previous wins from Rome in 2002, 2013 and 2014.

Football: ManUtd-Bournemouth match to be played on Tuesday

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Sundays abandoned match between Manchester United and Bournemouth will be played on Tuesday, May 17 at 8:00pm local time (1900 GMT), the English Premier League announced. The annoucement came hours after army experts blew up a suspect device at Uniteds Old Trafford ground on Sunday following the discovery of an incredibly lifelike explosive device inside the ground.Prior to the controlled explosion, tens of thousands of fans were evacuated from Old Trafford ahead of what was the final Premier League game of the season for both clubs. We can confirm that todays abandoned fixture between Manchester United and AFC Bournemouth will be played on Tuesday 17 May at 8pm, said a Premier League statement issued Sunday. We would like to thank Manchester Uniteds staff, the police and other emergency services for all their efforts today as well as rearranging the match for this coming Tuesday. Both Manchester United and AFC Bournemouths management has been extremely helpful in reaching a swift resolution, which is the best possible given todays events. The clubs will make their own announcements regarding ticketing arrangements.

Football: 'Training device' led to ManUtd-Bournemouth abandonment

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - The suspect package that saw Manchester Uniteds Premier League game with Bournemouth at Old Trafford abandoned on Sunday was in fact a dummy device left behind following a training exercise held at the ground four days earlier, police announced.Amid a nerve-jangling scare with much of Europe on alert for militant attacks, Greater Manchester Police confirmed late on Sunday that the controlled explosion that took place to neutralise the device was carried out on a dummy bomb left in toilets in the Stretford End on Wednesday.GMP Assistant Chief Constable John OHare said: Following todays controlled explosion, we have since found out that the item was a training device which had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive search dogs.Whilst this item did not turn out to be a viable explosive, on appearance this device was as real as could be, and the decision to evacuate the stadium was the right thing to do, until we could be sure that people were not at risk. The Premier League said the rescheduled fixture, the clubs last league game of the season, will now be played on Tuesday, with an 8:00pm (1900 GMT) local kick-off time. But the postponement of the original game raises a number of embarrassing questions for United and their security procedures -- not least the fact that the device remained in place for four days. The vast expense and inconvenience suffered by a capacity crowd of over 75,000 will also leave the English club red-faced. In addition to numerous supporters who travelled from overseas for the fixture, around 3,500 Bournemouth supporters made a round trip of 500-miles (800 kilometres) from the south coast.United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, in a statement issued in conjunction with GMP, said: The safety of fans is always our highest priority.Id like to thank the support from the police which was first class and the impeccable response from fans of both teams. He added: The club takes security very seriously and staff are regularly trained with the police and emergency services to identify and deal with these incidents. We will investigate the incident to inform future actions and decisions.

Football: Pellegrini bows out with City taking Euro prize

Posted:

SWANSEA (AFP) - Manuel Pellegrinis reign as Manchester City manager ended with a 1-1 draw at Swansea on Sunday that was enough to effectively ensure his successor Pep Guardiola will be able to lead the club into the Champions League next season.Pellegrini, whose three-year spell at Eastlands has seen the club win the Premier League title once and two League Cups, saw City live dangerously at times before he was able to sign off with the point needed to almost certainly beat Manchester United to the Premier Leagues fourth Champions League qualifying spot. Teenage striker Kelechi Iheanacho got City off to a flying start with an early goal at the Liberty Stadium but Andre Ayews equaliser just before half-time ensured a nervy last stand for Pellegrini in the clubs final game of the season.Although United still have a game to play following the abandonment of their fixture against Bournemouth, due to the discovery of a suspect package at Old Trafford, City are three points above them with a vasty superior goal difference that makes it extremely unlikely their rivals will overhaul them. Swansea manager Francesco Guidolin had done United counterpart Louis van Gaal no favours at all by resting his three best players.Lukasz Fabianski, Ashley Williams and Gylfi Sigurdsson were all given a day off with Euro 2016 in mind, but Swansea grew in confidence against below-par opponents. In his final game before stepping aside for Guardiola, Pellegrini named Raheem Sterling, Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri among his substitutes but they were hardly conspicuous in their absence early on.While United players were kicking their heels in frustration at Old Trafford, City wasted little time in trying to extinguish their neighbours slender hopes of playing in Europes elite club competition next season.Iheanacho quickly took advantage of Guidolins decision to field a weakened team by putting the visitors in command with a close-range goal after five minutes. The 19-year-old Nigeria striker, who scored 14 goals in his breakthrough season, tapped the ball past Kristoffer Nordfeldt after the Swedish goalkeeper had distinguished himself with a smart save to deny Sergio Aguero.Confusion followed as referee Mike Dean had seemingly over-ruled the goal for offside but this gave home supporters false hope as he was merely pointing to the centre spot. Much to the locals frustration, the opposite applied after Jefferson Montero diverted the ball past City goalkeeper Joe Hart, only for his celebrations to be cut short due to his foul on Bacary Sagna. City then dominated proceedings but Aguero was thwarted by Nordfeldt before wild efforts by Iheanacho and Jesus Navas.Their wastefulness, which drew forlorn stares from Aguero, was punished in first-half stoppage time when Ayew restored parity in the most fortuitous of circumstances. City defender Nicolas Otamendi was asking for trouble when he felled Swansea skipper Leon Britton with an ill-judged lunging challenge that earned a caution. There was further punishment moments later as Ayew set his sights on goal with a 25-yard free-kick and found Lady Luck was smiling on him as Fernandos head diverted the set-piece past the wrong-footed Hart.Despite the set-back, City were back on the front foot immediately after the break and Eliaquim Mangala almost put the visitors back in control when he rose to meet Kevin De Bruynes cross but his header grazed the crossbar. Iheanacho and Aguero spurned further opportunities as City went for the kill but Federico Fernandez served notice of their opponents ongoing threat when he headed Stephen Kingsleys corner just wide. That was as close as Swansea got to ensuring Pellegrinis tenure at City ended on an agonising low, but their lacklustre display underlined the size of the task facing Guardiola when he heads to Manchester from Bayern Munich.

Golf: Wang wins in Mauritius for second consecutive title

Posted:

PORT LOUIS (AFP) - South Korean Wang Jeung-hun claimed his second European Tour title in as many weeks by overhauling overnight leader Siddikur Rahman to win the Mauritius Open by one shot on Sunday. The 20-year-old took the Trophee Hassan II title last week in Morocco, and could now move into the top 70 in the world rankings having been 133rd a fortnight ago. He carded an even-par final round of 72 at the Four Seasons Golf Club, with a birdie at the 18th sealing a thrilling victory on a six-under-par total of 282.Wang is the first man to win back-to-back European Tour events since Rory McIlroy at the Bridgestone Invitational and USPGA Championship in 2014.He is also the third-youngest player to win his first two tournaments on the tour in the same season, with only Spaniards Sergio Garcia and Jose Maria Olazabal managing the feat at a younger age.I hope I can win three in a row, but next week is a really big tournament and its my first time in Ireland, so Im not sure, Wang told www.europeantour.com, referring to next weeks Irish Open at the K Club.I probably had luck on my side today. I wasnt even thinking about winning this week until the 16th. I missed a lot of putts so I thought I didnt have any chance to win.Wang started the day one stroke behind playing partner Rahman of Bangladesh, and slipped further adrift with a bogey at the opening hole.Rahman briefly pulled four clear, and took a three-shot advantage into the final three holes. But the 31-year-old buckled under the pressure of trying to win his first title on one of the two major tours, double bogeying the 16th and taking a four on the par-three penultimate hole. The duo were locked at five under going up the par-five last and Wang superbly got up and down from the greenside bunker for birdie, before Rahman saw his chip to force a play-off hit the pin.

Formula One: Verstappen becomes youngest ever F1 winner in Spain

Posted:

BARCELONA (AFP) - Teenager Max Verstappen became Formula Ones youngest winner on Sunday when he took full advantage of a spectacular first lap crash that eliminated both Mercedes cars to claim a memorable triumph in the Spanish Grand Prix.In his maiden outing with Red Bull following his unexpected promotion from Toro Rosso, the 18-year-old Dutchman showed supreme composure under pressure as he resisted all attacks to claim a stunning victory in only his 24th F1 race.He became the youngest race winner, at 18 years and 228 days, replacing four-time champion Sebastian Vettel who had also taken that record as a Red Bull driver. It feels amazing, I cant believe it, said Verstappen. It was a great race and it felt like an endurance race. To win straight away, in my first race, its an amazing feeling. From a very young age, my dad has helped me a lot - its just amazing.Verstappen, heralded as the sports hottest property, proved he has everything required to be a future world champion, but owed some of his good fortune also to Red Bulls decision to put him on a three-stop strategy while his senior team-mate Daniel Ricciardo was on a two-stop plan. That prevented the Australian from turning his early control of the race into victory after the opening lap collision between championship leader Nico Rosberg and his Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton had left them fuming in a gravel trap at Turn Four and out of the race.Ricciardo eventually came home fourth, despite suffering a puncture on the penultimate 65th lap, behind the two Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen who finished second ahead of Vettel.Verstappens maiden win on his Red Bull debut was the first in the sport by a Dutchman and the first by the team without Vettel involved in one of their cars. Its unbelievable, I cant believe this, said Verstappens father Jos, who on Saturday had announced he was standing down as his sons manager.Valtteri Bottas came home fifth for Williams ahead of Carlos Sainz in a Toro Rosso, Sergio Perez of Force India, Felipe Massa in the second Williams, Jenson Button of McLaren Honda and Daniil Kvyat on his return to Toro Rosso.Ricciardo was understandably frustrated. Its mixed emotions for me, he said. I was leading and then was pulled to a three-stop strategy and had to pass three cars - that wasnt the plan.In hindsight, it was wrong. Not to be on the podium - that sucks for me. The puncture at the end was just salt in the wounds.I dont want to come across as a bad sportsman and, whatever happened on the track, Max crossed the line first. Im bitter, but not at Max.Red Bull team boss Christian Horner said: We are as much in shock as anyone is... We knew there was a chance when both Mercedes went off, but what Max has done is unbelievable. He made a two-stop, which was right on the limit, and it worked beautifully for him. It is fantastic for F1 to have a new winner - a youngster on the top step at 18. He cant even drink the champagneVettel was generous to his successor as the youngest winner. Many congratulations to Max, it is a great achievement to win your first race and this is his day.Raikkonen, whose second place finish lifted him to second behind Rosberg in the drivers championship, said: I am happy for Max, but disappointed for myself. But thats racing. We tried and we tried. I was fast and I got close, but it was not enough.Raikkonen, a 36-year-old veteran of 235 Grands Prix, added: I raced against his father. In Formula One And that is scary...In an extraordinary race, there was drama from start to finish. World championship leader Rosberg and Hamilton were scrapping for the lead when they wrecked the teams hopes of another one-two triumph and revived bitter memories of their collision in the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix on Turn Four.We have spoken to both drivers and it is not a clear cut decision - we have lost 43 points after lots of effort by the team in the last few difficult weeks, said a strained Toto Wolff, the team chief. Lets see what the stewards decide.Another reprimand for Hamilton, if it was to come, would be his third of the season and signal an automatic 10-place grid penalty for the Monaco Grand Prix, diminishing his ability to revive a serious title defence. On the day of Verstappens emphatic arrival, it seemed also to be a signal that times are changing and a new era may be about to unfold.

GEORGE TOWN (AFP) - World 100- and 200-meter record holder Usain Bolt of Jamaica opened his 2016 season with a 100m victory in 10.05 seconds at the Cayman Invitational.Making his fist strides on the road to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August, Bolt crossed the finish line .07 of a second ahead of American runner-up Dentarius Locke. It wasnt the best, but as long as I come out injury free, thats the key thing, Bolt said.I didnt feel as smooth as I wanted to, but as I always say, its hard to just come into your first race and do extra well.Jamaican Kemar Bailey-Cole, who trains with Bolt at Racers Track Club, was third in 10.18 with a light tailwind of 0.1m/sec.Bolt is planning his campaign with the aim of defending his 100m, 200m and 4x100m Olympic crowns in Brazil, seeking an unprecedented third gold medal in a row in all three events in what he has said will be his final Olympics.Bolt, who races in Ostrava next week, said he is not worried with his form. Its just more races, Bolt said. My coach will determine what I need to work on, but right now its just more races. The more races I run, the better I will feel so I am just looking forward to running more races and see what happens.I am never worried. Ive been in worse situations. Its just race rusty. I can tell. I could feel the difference from when you are flying from when you are not.The 29-year-old superstar had not competed since winning three gold medals at last Augusts World Championships in Beijing.Bolt, who owns the 100m world record at 9.58 seconds and the world 200m record of 19.19, was off his pre-meet projection of a victory in 9.91.

This is strange, very strange.Brambilla, among the late starters as overnight race leader, had claimed a well-deserved stage win on Saturday after taking a late solo attack all the way to the line, in the process taking the pink jersey from Dutchman Tom Dumoulin and leaving the Giant rider further down the overall standings after a number of his rivals also counter-attacked.The Italian, who rides for Etixx, admitted those efforts had left him short of resources but did not stop him giving everything in a bid to spend Mondays rest day basking in the glow of the pink jersey.I spent a lot of of energy yesterday when I attacked and went full gas all day. It was the same today: alone again, full gas again and nothing to lose, he said.Everything went well. I kept the pink jersey. Until now everything has gone well in the Giro. Its an amazing feeling.
