Oil hits 2016 highs after fall in US inventories

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices surged to the highest levels this year Wednesday after data showed a fall in US crude inventories that added to expectations of a tightening global market. In its weekly report, the Department of Energy said that US commercial crude oil inventories fell by 4.2 million barrels in the week to May 20, but at 537.1 million barrels remained at historically high levels. We had a decent draw in headline crude numbers, that really carried us through a rally today, said Matt Smith of ClipperData.Major oil futures climbed within striking distance of $50 a barrel. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for delivery in July advanced 94 cents to $49.56 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent North Sea crude for July, the European benchmark, finished at $49.74 a barrel, up $1.13 from Tuesdays settlement. When you look at inventories, people start to realize the demand continues to be strong and production is starting to ebb, and that should get the market back in balance, said Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group. The global oil market nosedived from above $100 a barrel two years ago to around $27 in early 2016, plagued by a stubborn glut. They have since rebounded, aided by weeks of wildfires in Canada that have curbed oil production and unrest affecting energy infrastructure in Nigeria, Africas biggest oil exporter.Commerzbank analyst Carsten Fritsch said the recent price rebound was making the cost of North American shale oil attractive again, which could dampen the fall in production in the coming months. What is more, oil production is gradually resuming in those regions of Canada plagued by wildfires, he said in a research note.We therefore do not expect to see prices remain above $50 per barrel for any length of time, he added.

Euro higher on good German data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro edged higher Wednesday on improved German economic data and a new agreement from the Eurogroup ministers to release funds for beleaguered Greece.Meanwhile the British pound continued its rebound on apparently eroding support for the Brexit movement to quit the European Union. The euro rose to $1.1154 after the IFO business climate index for Germany rose by a full point to 107.7 in May, comfortably outpacing analysts expectations and suggesting that German businesses have increasingly positive outlooks for the coming months.Added to that, the Eurogroup agreed to unlock 10.3 billion euros ($12 billion) in bailout cash that Greece needs for looming bond payments, averting a potential default. But the International Monetary Fund again refused to join in the countrys third bailout as long as there is no detailed debt relief plan for the long term. The euro was mildly higher in morning European dealing today after IFO data printed slightly better than expected, but overall action in the currency market was subdued across all the major pairs, said Boris Schlossberg of BK Asset Management. The pound pushed to $1.4702, its highest level since the beginning of the year, as market hopes cautiously rise that British voters will not support an exit from the European Union in a June 23 referendum. The Financial Times poll shows that 46 percent of voters are in the remain camp while 40 percent back exiting.

Compton accepts England future is on the line

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Nick Compton believes theres still a place for his old-fashioned approach to top-order batting, even though he accepts he is playing for his England place heading into Fridays second Test against Sri Lanka at the Riverside.Compton was out for a duck in Englands crushing innings and 88-run win at Headingley last week as Alastair Cooks men went 1-0 up in the three-match series. That followed a tour of South Africa where Compton, in his second spell as an England batsman, managed just 245 runs in four matches.Often described as an intense cricketer, Comptons style of patient accumulation is at odds with the modern-day trend for aggressive batting in all formats. The 32-year-old, who averages 30 in 14 Tests at a modest strike rate of 35 runs per 100 balls, accepts that England team-mates Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow may be easier on the eye, as indeed was his grandfather Denis Compton -- not just one of Englands greatest batsmen but one of their most dashing. But Nick Compton, born in South Africa but latterly educated in England, said it was important he remained true to his own style at No 3. England assistant coach Paul Farbrace was adamant at Headingley that Compton had no need to radically alter his game.Compton, speaking at the Riverside on Wednesday, said that was the message he had received from team management.Im very clear on that, said Compton at an event staged by series sponsor Investec. Weve an exciting team of stroke players. Its my role to get myself in and try and shield some of those players from the new ball and if I get in, to make sure I get a big score.Compton, despite two hundreds against New Zealand, was dropped by England in 2013 after being reduced to near strokelessness when facing the Black Caps at Headingley in 2013.I probably didnt take my chances with two hands, said Compton. Maybe with one, one-and-a-half hands. Compton made a useful 85 against South Africa in Durban, the city where he was born and brought up, to help England to a 241-run win in the first Test in December. It would have been nice personally to have kicked on and got some big scores and thats something that grated with me, he said. But the thing that gives me the most enjoyment or happiness is contributing to an England victory. Take the Durban Test match, I know I contributed to that victory. The Middlesex batsman insisted he had received no guarantees about his international future.I dont think theres any assurances in top-level sport...It comes down to weight of runs.As for his style at the crease, Compton added: The way the games going I think people are drawn towards a certain glamour. Some players provide that and people want to see more of that. Thats great, were in the entertainment business.I suppose watching Ben Stokess 200 (at Cape Town in January) is better than watching Comptons 80. If I sat on a couch and wanted to watch someone bat, I would rather watch Brian Lara, or my late grandfather, or Ben Stokes. But I feel like I have made the best of what Ive been given. He added: If you put me on a flat wicket against Jonny Bairstow (who made a brisk 140 against Sri Lanka at Headingley last week) he is going to score quicker than I am. But likewise I think there are areas where I will add something else, and its not always going to be flat. I just have to do what Im doing better.

Hyderabad bowling chokes Kolkata out of IPL

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Moises Henriques allround show and a disciplined bowling performance helped Sunrisers Hyderabad knock Kolkata Knight Riders out of this cricket seasons Indian Premier League with a 22-run win in the Eliminator Tuesday.Put into bat at Delhis Feroz Shah Kotla, Hyderabad rode on Yuvraj Singhs 30-ball 44 to manage a respectable 162 for eight before restricting Kolkata to 140 for 8 wickets in 20 overs.Medium-pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bagged three wickets as Australias Henriques (2-17) and Hyderabads star import from Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman (0-28) provided the adequate support.Rahman was unable to get a wicket but his economical spell was instrumental in taking the David Warner-led side over the line. Earlier the Hyderabad top-order fell to the guile of chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav, who got Man of the Match Henriques (31) and Warner (28) on consecutive deliveries.Yuvraj then got the rebuilding act going with Deepak Hooda to stitch a 49-run fourth wicket partnership as the duo combined the right dose of caution and aggression. The left-handed Yuvraj, who has represented India in 293 one-day internationals, struck eight fours and a six before being bowled by West Indies pacer Jason Holder. Holder along with Morne Morkel shared two wickets apiece as the bowling duo complimented destroyer-in-chief Yadav (3-35).Chasing what seemed a par score at the neutral venue, Kolkata lost a couple of early wickets but skipper Gautam Gambhir (28) kept chipping away.Gambhirs wicket in the 10th over proved to be crucial as Henriques soon got dangerman Yusuf Pathan (2) back in the dug out with KKR in a tight spot.Manish Pandey (36) and Suryakumar Yadavs 46-run fifth-wicket stand did raise hopes for a KKR recovery but Hyderabad bowlers kept getting wickets.Hyderabad will now meet Gujarat Lions in Qualifier 2 in New Delhi on Friday to decide Royal Challengers Bangalores opponent in the title clash Sunday.
