Mathews leads Sri Lanka's fight for self-respect

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews led from the front in the second Test at the Riverside on Sunday as his side avoided the embarrassment of another defeat by England inside three days.Mathews made 80 as Sri Lanka, again forced to follow-on, stopped England strolling to a series-clinching win.At the close of the third day, Sri Lanka were 309 for five -- still 88 runs behind Englands first innings 498 for nine declared, which featured Moeen Alis Test-best 155 not out.Mathewss fourth-wicket second-innings stand of 82 -- Sri Lankas first fifty partnership of the series -- with opener Kaushal Silva (60) kept England at bay for much of Sundays play.Dinesh Chandimal (54 not out) and Milinda Siriwardana (35 not out) built on that platform with an unbroken partnership of 87 that took Sri Lanka to stumps.Sri Lanka had at least stopped the rot after becoming the first side since New Zealand in England back in 1958 to be bowled out for under 120 in three successive Test innings following their 101 first time around in this match.Mathewss men totalled just 91 and 119 during a crushing innings and 88-run defeat in the first of a three-Test series at Headingley last week. But Sundays second-innings effort -- something badly needed for their own morale and that of all those who want to see competitive Test cricket -- kept them in this match. It also left open the possibility of a stunning, come-from-behind, win if they could set England 100 or more for victory. We have to bat positively tomorrow, Silva told Sky Sports. We have to get those 80 runs and then set a target.Sri Lankas second innings saw the talented Kusal Mendis make a brisk 26 before he was caught behind off a James Anderson delivery that nipped away.Lahiru Thirimanne scored 13 before off-spinner Ali bowled him with a classic delivery that turned past the left-handers outside edge as he pushed forward.Silvas leg-glance off fast bowler Steven Finn, his sixth boundary, saw him to a 111-ball fifty.Mathews then clipped Stuart Broad through mid-wicket for four and cut him to the point rope, before his slogged six off Ali brought up Sri Lankas 150.Ali beat the advancing Mathews, then on 36, only for wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow to miss the stumping chance.Mathews went on to complete a 63-ball fifty, featuring 30 runs in boundaries.Finn broke an entertaining stand, however, when his bouncer surprised Silva, whose skyed pull into Bairstows gloves ended nearly four hours of resistance. The umpires checked for a possible no-ball, but Finn had narrowly avoided over-stepping and Sri Lanka were 182 for four. Its just about trying to find more consistency, said Finn, who ended the day with figures of one for 55 from 16 overs.(The side strain) is not in my mind, my body is fine, Im just trying to get in a battle and take wickets for England.Mathews made his Test-best score of 160 against England in a series-clinching win at Headingley in 2014.But he fell short of a hundred on Sunday when Anderson, as hes done so often in becoming Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker, produced a fine leg-cutter that squared Mathews up and took the outside edge, with Bairstow holding a tumbling catch.Sri Lanka were now 222 for five, with more than 19 overs left before stumps. But with the ground now bathed in sunshine, conditions for batting had improved greatly.England had four overs with the new ball prior to the close, but Chandimal responded by cover-driving Broad for his fifth four to complete a 95-ball fifty.

Hyderabad beat Bangalore for maiden IPL win

Posted:

BANGALORE (AFP) - Skipper David Warners sparkling half century helped Sunrisers Hyderabad survive a punishing blitz by Chris Gayle to edge out Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs in the Indian Premier League final on Sunday.Defending 208 to claim their maiden IPL title, Hyderabad restricted Virat Kohlis Bangalore to 200 for seven at the M Chinnaswamy stadium with Gayles 38-ball 76 in vain. With 18 runs required off the final over, pace spearhead Bhuvneshwar Kumar -- the leading wicket taker of the season with 23 scalps -- gave away just nine as the Hyderabad players celebrated amid fireworks.Electing to bat first, Hyderabad rode on entertaining knocks from Australias Warner and Ben Cutting to post a mammoth 208 for seven in 20 overs.Fantastic team achievement. To lead this side and the support from the players, me pulling my weight with the runs, it has been a hard journey. Its a team effort, a delighted Warner said after the triumph. If Warner laid a solid foundation with his ninth fifty of this IPL season then fellow Aussie Cutting finished it off with an unbeaten 39 off 15 deliveries.Left-handed Warner (69), who accumulated 848 runs in 17 matches, gave the team a rollicking 63-run start with opener Shikhar Dhawan (28).Warner smashed the ball to all parts of the ground and took a special liking to Shane Watson whose opening over -- the fifth of the innings -- cost 18 runs.Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who remained the teams top wicket taker of the season with 21, got the first breakthrough in Dhawan who mistimed a slog sweep to deep square leg.Warner, whose 38-ball knock was laced with eight fours and three sixes, kept up the run rate, forcing Kohli to juggle with his bowling options.England medium-pacer Chris Jordan (3-45) replaced left-arm spinner Iqbal Abdullah in the 10th over to send Australias Moises Henriques trudging back to the dug out.Aravind got the prized scalp of Warner, who threw away his wicket while trying to slash at a widish delivery and got caught at short third man.Veteran India batsman Yuvraj Singh took over from where Warner left off, smacking 38 runs from 23 balls to keep the momentum going. The Bangalore bowlers kept coming back to get wickets in between but could never arrest the flow of runs. The last five overs saw the back of four Hyderabad batsmen, but Cuttings late blitz allowed the side to bag 68 runs from the final 30 deliveries. To win in Bangalore, we were underdogs. But, we batted well, bowled well and fielded well, said Warner.Chasing a record total in the final, Gayle struck from the start, raining sixes with medium-pacers Barinder Sran and Cutting taking a severe beating. The burly Jamaican stole the spotlight away from fellow opener and seasons top run getter Kohli to notch up his second fifty of this edition in just 25 balls. The duo, who stitched a 114-run partnership, took away 21 runs from a Moises Henriques over as Bangalore brought up their hundred in just nine overs to enthral the raucous crowd.Cutting gave Hyderabad their first breakthrough to send back the dangerous Gayle, who smoked four fours and eight sixes during his 38-ball stay at the crease.Kohli (54), who registered 973 runs this season including four centuries and seven fifties, was the next to go, hitting five fours and two sixes in his 35-ball knock.Star batsman AB de Villiers soon followed Kohli into the dug-out, giving the Hyderabad bowlers a chance to get back into the game.Cutting (2-35) seized the moment to clean up Lokesh Rahul for 11 and with Shane Watson gone for the same score off Mustafizur Rahman, RCB started to lose their way into the chase. In the end Sachin Baby tried his best to match up the ever increasing asking rate with his 10-ball 18 not out, but RCB had to stay content with their third runners up finish in the cash-rich league. We are proud of the way we played as a team. This was for the people of Bangalore. Even when we had the worst seasons, they were there for us, said Kohli.

5 UN peacekeepers killed in Mali attack: UN, police sources

Posted:

BAMAKO, (AFP) - At least five UN peacekeepers were killed in an ambush in central Mali by suspected militants on Sunday, the UN and police sources said. The attack is the first time the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, MINUSMA, has recorded fatalities in the centre of a country long beset by violence in its vast and desolate north.According to preliminary information, five peacekeepers were killed. Another was seriously hurt and is being evacuated, MINUSMA said in a statement. The UN did not immediately confirm the nationality of the dead soldiers but a Bamako police source indicated a group of Togolese peacekeepers came across a mine and a terrorist attack some 50 kilometres out of Mopti.First reports had indicated four Togolese peacekeepers were killed in the mid-morning attack on a MINUSMA convoy some 30 kilometres (20 miles) west of the town of Sevare in Mopti region.MINUSMA mission head Mahamat Saleh Annadif condemned the attack as an odious act of terror.I most strongly condemn this abject crime which adds to other terrorist acts targeting our peacekeepers and which constitute crimes against humanity under international law, said Annadif.Sundays attack came just two days after authorities reported five Malian soldiers killed and four wounded Friday when their vehicles hit a mine in the north and then came under sustained fire.Last week also saw five peacekeepers from Chad killed and three others wounded in an ambush in the northeast by Ansar Dine jihadist fighters. The Mali mission is the most dangerous active deployment for UN peacekeepers and it has been hit by sharp internal tensions since its launch in July 2013.With Sundays attack, at least 64 MINUSMA peacekeepers have been killed while on active service, while another four have died in friendly fire incidents, UN figures show. The north has seen repeated violence since it fell under the control of Tuareg-led rebels who allied with jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda in 2012.The Islamists were largely ousted by an ongoing French-led military operation launched in January 2013, but they have since carried out sporadic attacks on security forces from desert hideouts.Rival armed factions and smuggling networks mean the region has struggled for stability since Mali gained independence from former colonial power France in 1960.
