Posted:

ESTORIL (AFP) - Nicolas Almagro ended a title drought lasting four years on Sunday (May 1) when the experienced Spanish clay-courter defeated younger compatriot Pablo Carreno Busta 6-7 (6/8), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to win the Estoril Open. The victory in nearly three hours of struggle, marked the first title for the 30-year-old Almagro since winning Nice on clay in May, 2012.The world number 71 has spent much of the last few seasons coming back from injury but he boosted his growing confidence with the approach of Roland Garros by lifting the 13th trophy of his career.Every event is tough, with Roland Garros coming up, things are really tight. Everyone wants to be ready for the French Open, said the winner. Its great to win a title after so long, it was a battle today with Pablo, who was playing really well. Ive improved during the week, Ive been losing a lot of matches that I should have won. Im looking for my tennis again. But Im gaining more confidence with my game.Almagro made life difficult for himself throughout each of the first two sets, lasting a total of two hours. He finally took command with a break early in the final set and escaped for victory on a third match point with the 13th trophy of his career.Earlier, Almagro was unable to serve out the opening set and also lost a 6-2 lead in the ensuing tiebreaker.Carreno Busta, ranked 50th and twice a finalist this season, saved four Almagro set points before seizing the opening set on his own first opportunity. But Almagro rallied in the second as he battled back, earning and losing a break to enter a second tiebreaker, which he won to square the match at a set each.Almagro broke in the third game of the final set and rode the margin out to the narrow win on his third match point. The champion had lost the Buenos Aires final this season, with Estoril the 23rd final of his career.

Islamic State boosts attacks in response to territorial losses: IHS

Posted:

BAGHDAD (Reuters) -Islamic State attacks have increased this year, particularly in Iraq and Syria as the group responds to substantial territorial losses, a U.S.-based analysis firm IHS said on Sunday. There were 891 attacks during the first quarter of 2016 in neighbors Iraq and Syria, more than in any three-month period since the militants sweeping advance in mid-2014, IHS said in a new report. Those attacks killed 2,150 people, a 44 percent rise over the previous three months and the highest quarterly toll in nearly a year. The group is resorting more and more to mass-casualty violence as it comes under heavy pressure from multiple angles, said Matthew Henman, head of IHS Janes Terrorism and Insurgency Center. The U.S. military estimates Islamic States territory in Iraq has shrunk by about 40 percent from its 2014 peak and 20 percent in Syria.Iraqs military routed the militants from the western city of Ramadi four months ago and then pushed further west towards the Syrian border. The northern offensive has been slower, with army and Arab tribal forces taking only four villages over the past month south of Mosul. In Syria, government-aligned forces backed by Russian air power have recaptured territory from Islamic State, including the ancient city of Palmyra. The group is also under pressure from a separate U.S.-led air campaign in the north and northeast, where Kurdish fighters have advanced. The IHS report also noted a rise in Islamic State attacks in Libya, where the militants have grown in strength, taking over the central city of Sirte and attacking oilfields. Analysis showed almost as many attacks in the first three months of this year as in the preceding six months.IHS said Islamic State activity has also spiked around the northwestern town of Sabratha it described as a key staging ground for attacks in neighboring Tunisia.High profile, mass casualty attacks are a tried and tested method of changing the narrative and deflecting attention away from the problems it is facing, said Henman. This is done for internal consumption just as much as external.

Tennis: Top seeds Radwanska, Kerber crash out in Madrid

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Top seeds Agnieszka Radwanska and Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber crashed out of the Madrid Open in the first round on Sunday in major setbacks ahead of Roland Garros.Polands Radwanska, the number one seed in the absence of Serena Williams, lost 6-4, 6-7 (3/7), 6-3 to the rejuvenated Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.Radwanska, a semi-finalist in 2012 and 2014 in the Spanish capital, already knew the dangers posed by Cibulkova after her opponent came within a point of victory in their last meeting at Indian Wells in March.Cibulkova, a former world number 10 and Australian Open runner-up, was always going to be a dangerous floater having won her fifth career title last time out in Katowice three weeks ago.Second-seeded German Kerber was dumped out by the Czech Republics Barbora Strycova 6-4, 6-2 with her defeat coming just a week after she had retained her title in Stuttgart. However, Kerber was outplayed by world number 33 Strycova, who she had beaten 6-1, 6-1 in Miami back in March.Id win four games in the matches we played before, said Strycova. I went into this match thinking I had nothing to lose. I mean, it cant be worse than Miami.Losses for Radwanska and Kerber mean Garbine Muguruza is the highest seed left at the key clay-court event and the fourth-ranked Spaniard sealed her place in round two with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Anna Schmiedlova.Of course I was a little bit nervous and tense because the first matches are always complicated, said Muguruza, who is aiming to be the first Spanish woman to win the title in Madrid. In Madrid we have this extra pressure because Im here at home. Perhaps youre a little bit more nervous because of that, but my first feeling is that Im satisfied for winning the match.Former world number one Victoria Azarenka stretched her winning streak to 15 matches after winning in Indian Wells and Miami as she overcame some stiff first set resistence from Britains Laura Robson to win 6-4, 6-2.Azarenka could meet defending champion and fifth seed Petra Kvitova in the quarter-finals as the Czech had no trouble in disposing of Lara Arrubarrena 6-3, 6-2.US Open finalist Roberta Vinci, the seventh seed, is out after losing in straight sets to Montenegrin Danka Kovinic 6-4, 6-2.German Laura Siegemund continued her great start to the clay season after reaching the Stuttgart final as a qualifier as she dumped out ninth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.Eighth seed Carla Suarez Navarro came from a set down to beat Hungarys Timea Babos 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.Ana Ivanovic also had to go the distance to see off Katerina Siniakova 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 while 2014 French Open runner-up Simona Halep, the sixth-seeded Romanian, swept past Japans Misaki Doi 6-0, 6-3.There was also a notable win for Swiss 10th seed Timea Bacsinszky who saw off Germanys Andrea Petkovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 despite only arriving in Spain at midnight having won the Rabat title on Saturday. Also shrugging off jet-lag was Czech 11th seed Lucie Safarova, the champion in Prague on Saturday, who beat Coco Vandeweghe 7-6 (7/4), 6-1.Australias Samantha Stosur, beaten by Safarova in the Czech final 24 hours earlier, was also a winner, seeing off home player Sara Sorribes 6-1, 6-3.

Football: Leicester held to draw with Man Utd, must wait for title

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Leicesters Premier League title celebrations were delayed for at least another 24 hours after the leaders drew 1-1 with Manchester United on Sunday. The Foxes needed three points to win the league for the first time, but with thousands of fans back in Leicester and millions of new converts around the world watching on television, they had to make do with one after Wes Morgan cancelled out Anthony Martials opener for United.Leicester, who lost Danny Drinkwater to a late red card, will be crowned champions unless second-place Tottenham Hotspur win at Chelsea on Monday, but if Spurs do prevail, Ranieris men will be left requiring two points from their final games, at home to Everton and away to Chelsea. It would still take a monumental collapse for Leicester not to claim the title, but their players, staff and anxious supporters must wait a few more hours, if not days, before their place in sporting history can be confirmed. While Leicesters title destiny remains in their own hands, it was a damaging result for Louis van Gaals United, who were left four points below the Champions League places with only three games to play.Leicester have turned winning with minimal possession into an art form this season, but Uniteds early dominance here was to prove the precursor to a soft opener.Antonio Valencia, preferred to 18-year-old Timothy Fosu-Mensah at right-back, was allowed to cut inside Christian Fuchs and trundle a cross to the back post, where Martial exploited Danny Simpsons errant positioning to slot his 15th goal of the season past Kasper Schmeichel.Back at the ground where his father, Peter, made his name, Schmeichel then produced a sharp one-handed save to thwart Jesse Lingard after Marouane Fellaini had chested down a cross from Marcos Rojo.Shortly after Schmeichels save, visiting captain Morgan outmuscled the floundering Rojo to meet Drinkwaters arcing free-kick with a headed 17th-minute equaliser. The game was now an intense, robust encounter and Fellaini was guilty of a wild elbow to Robert Huths chin, after the German had provoked him by yanking his hair, that could earn the Belgian a retrospective ban.Referee Michael Oliver did not spot Fellainis infringement and he was also involved in two incidents prior to half-time that could have had major ramifications for either side.In the first, Lingard intercepted a pass from Simpson, a former United player, on halfway and raced towards goal, only to go to ground as Simpson leant into him.It would have been a red card if Oliver had called it a foul, but he saw no wrongdoing and it was the same story moments later -- albeit perhaps more contentiously -- when Riyad Mahrez crashed to the turf after being caught by Rojo inside the United box.The teams continued to exchange chances in the second half, with Martial shooting over and Lingard curling straight at Schmeichel for United, while Leonardo Ulloa, once again deputising for the suspended Jamie Vardy, twice threatened for the visitors.Mahrez, the Player of the Year, had been a peripheral presence, but with 19 minutes remaining he wriggled past three players before stinging David de Geas palms from the edge of the box.The closing stages belonged to United, however, with Chris Smallings header clipping the post before Drinkwater, another Old Trafford old boy, saw red after receiving a second yellow card for hauling back substitute Memphis Depay right on the edge of the box.

Real's Ronaldo returns to training after injury

And Real Madrids priority is to win.We know it will be a tough challenge, but everything is possible. The 31-year-old Portuguese trained with his team mates during the first half of Sundays session before working out on the pitch alone.Manchester City are in the semi-finals because they are an excellent team, Ronaldo added.Eliminating Paris St Germain is not easy, but they managed it. Theyre a team who have very few flaws.Striker Karim Benzema also continued his recovery from a hamstring injury and Alvaro Arbeloa - who has not played since early April - completed some running exercises.Ronaldo leads the Champions League scoring charts with 16 goals this season, including a hat-trick in the quarter-final second-leg victory over Wolfsburg. We had to win by three goals and I scored all three, Ronaldo said.It was a special night. It needed to be the perfect evening and it was.

Formula One: Rosberg makes it seven wins in a row

Posted:

SOCHI (Reuters) - Formula One championship leader Nico Rosberg chalked up his seventh win in a row at the Russian Grand Prix on Sunday with team mate Lewis Hamilton fighting back from 10th on the grid to seal a Mercedes one-two finish. In a race that started with chaos, and Ferraris Sebastian Vettel being shunted into the wall by Red Bulls Russian Daniil Kvyat, Rosberg had an untroubled afternoon from pole to chequered flag for his 18th career win.The German equalled the achievement of compatriot Michael Schumacher in winning seven successive races, with only Vettel (nine in 2013 with Red Bull) and the late Italian Alberto Ascari ahead of them.Only champions Schumacher, Britains Nigel Mansell and Brazilian Ayrton Senna had won the first four races in a season before Rosberg joined them.It felt very special out there, said the happy winner, who led all the way and also set the fastest lap, after being congratulated by Russian President Vladimir Putin.Triple world champion Hamilton was 25 seconds behind Rosberg with Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen finishing third after winning a battle with fellow Finn Valtteri Bottas, who started on the front row, in the Williams. The podium was Ferraris 700th since the championship started in 1950.Rosberg, who won the last three races of 2015 and now the first four of 2016, leads Hamilton by 43 points in the standings with 17 races remaining and the Briton facing an increasingly daunting challenge.Lewis is going to come back of course, hes on it and as motivated as ever, said Rosberg. Well just take it race by race.Hamilton had reduced the gap between him and Rosberg to seven seconds by the 36th of the 53 laps but his challenge was then slowed by a water pressure problem. There wasnt a doubt in my mind that I could win it, I had the pace, but then I had a problem with the engine again and had to back off, said the champion.Mercedes switched the power unit in his car after it failed in qualifying, flying parts out from Britain overnight by private jet to avoid a penalty that would have forced Hamilton to start from the pit lane.Starts have been the Britons big weakness this season, despite two pole positions, and he had yet to get through the opening lap without problems but he stayed out of trouble as those around him collided.Vettel, starting seventh, was hit twice from behind by Russian Kvyats Red Bull into turns two and three while Force Indias Nico Hulkenberg and Manors Rio Haryanto both retired. As Rosberg sped away, Raikkonen seized second place with Hamilton fifth as the safety car was deployed to allow debris to be cleared.Brazilian Felipe Massa was fifth for Williams with Fernando Alonso sixth for McLaren, who had their first double points finish since Hungary last year when Jenson Button crossed the line in 10th place.Denmarks Kevin Magnussen took Renaults first points of the season in seventh place with Frenchman Romain Grosjean continuing his remarkable form with newcomers Haas in eighth place. Force Indias Sergio Perez was ninth.

Mayweather happy in retirement but hints at ring return

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Floyd Mayweather Jr is happily retired but the 39-year-old unbeaten American hinted in an interview that a return to the ring could not be completely ruled out.Mayweather quit boxing in September after accumulating a 49-0 record during a 19-year career that produced world titles in five weight divisions and earnings in excess of US$800 million. The American says he is happy with life outside the ring but acknowledged he was in talks with television networks over a possible comeback fight.Everyone is asking me is Floyd Mayweather coming back? he said in an interview with Showtime.Right now, Im happy being on this side but Ive been talking with CBS and Showtime and you just never know. But right now, Im just happy on this side, added Mayweather, who ended his career in the welterweight division. As of right now, some crazy numbers have been thrown my way - upwards, of course, of nine figures. But Im truly blessed beyond belief and I really dont know what were going to do. But right now, Im really happy being on this side helping our fighters.Mayweather beat Manny Pacquiao, who retired last month, in a unanimous decision last year before defeating Andre Berto in September in his last bout. Many want him to take on undefeated Kazakh middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin but Mayweather was quick to rule out the possibility of agreeing to that match-up.How can Floyd Mayweather fight at 160 (pounds) when I can never even make 154? he said.

Astronomers find a tailless comet, first of its kind

Posted:

CAPE CANAVERAL (Reuters) -Astronomers have found a first-of-its-kind tailless comet whose composition may offer clues into long-standing questions about the solar systems formation and evolution, according to research published on Friday in the journal Science Advances. The so-called Manx comet, named after a breed of cats without tails, was made of rocky materials that are normally found near Earth. Most comets are made of ice and other frozen compounds and were formed in solar systems frigid far reaches.Researchers believe the newly found comet was formed in the same region as Earth, then booted to the solar system’s backyard like a gravitational slingshot as planets jostled for position.Scientists involved in the discovery now seek to learn how many more Manx comets exist, which could help to resolve debate over exactly how and when the solar system settled into its current configuration.Depending how many we find, we will know whether the giant planets danced across the solar system when they were young, or if they grew up quietly without moving much, paper co-author Olivier Hainaut, an astronomer with the European Southern Observatory in Germany, said in a statement. The new comet, known as C/2014 S3, was discovered in 2014 by the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, or Pan-STARRS. This network of telescopes scours the night-time skies for fast-moving comets, asteroids and other celestial bodies.Typically comets coming in from the same region as the Manx grow bright tails as they approach the sun, the result of ice vaporizing off their bodies and gleaming in reflected sunlight. But C/2014 S3 was dark and virtually tailless when it was spotted about twice as far away from the sun as Earth.Later analysis showed that instead of ices typically found on comets, the Manx comet contained materials similar to the rocky asteroids located in a belt between Mars and Jupiter. And C/2014 S3 appeared pristine, an indication that it had been in the solar systems deep freeze for a long time, said University of Hawaii astronomer Karen Meech, the lead author. The discovery of additional Manx comets could help scientists to refine computer models used to simulate the solar systems formation, Meech said.

Obama torches Trump at his final Washington correspondents' dinner

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. President Barack Obama on Saturday took aim at Democrats and Republicans alike in his final appearance headlining the star-studded White House correspondents dinner, but saved his sharpest barbs for Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump. The Republican establishment is incredulous that hes their most likely nominee, Obama told attendees at the black-tie event, which brought together journalists and media moguls with Hollywood stars and power brokers from Capitol Hill and beyond. They say Donald lacks the foreign policy experience to be president. But in fairness he has spent years meeting with leaders from around the world: Miss Sweden, Miss Argentina, Miss Azerbaijan, the president said to howls of laughter, referring to contestants on the Miss Universe pageant that Trump formerly co-owned.Obama made fun of the angst many in the Republican establishment have expressed at the prospect that Trump or Tea Party candidate Ted Cruz could win the partys nomination to run in the Nov. 8 presidential election.“Guests were asked to check whether they wanted steak or fish, but instead a whole bunch of you wrote in Paul Ryan,” Obama said, referring to the top Republican in the House of Representatives, who many have hoped could be lured into running for president.Thats not an option people, Obama said, displaying comedic chops perfected through seven previous appearances at the annual dinner. You may not like steak or fish, but thats your choice. In his remarks, Obama looked back on his presidency and jokingly predicted the country may be nearing its doom.“The end of the republic has never looked better,” the tuxedo-clad president said looking out at the well-groomed crowd as he blasted Republican Party Chairman Reince Priebus.“Congratulations on all your success,” Obama told Priebus, while wearing a sarcastic grin. “The Republican party, the nomination process – it’s all going great.”Larry Wilmore, the host of a show on cable outlet Comedy Central, took his own shots at Trump when he took the podium after Obama, joking that next year the dinner will be called: Donald Trump presents a luxurious evening paid for by Mexico.Trump has famously promised to build a wall between the United States and Mexico to prevent illegal immigration, and he has said he would force Mexico to pay for it.With a bit of nostalgia, Obama reflected on his more than seven years in office, saying he had been a young man of idealism and vigor before he became president.Eight years ago I said it was time to change the tone of our politics, Obama said. In hindsight, I clearly should have been more specific.

Eyeing an Indiana victory, Trump says, 'It's over'

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Front-runner Donald Trump said on Sunday that he will have essentially sealed the Republican U.S. presidential nomination if he wins Tuesdays contest in Indiana, where he holds a big lead over chief rival Ted Cruz.A new NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist opinion poll showed Trump with a wide lead in Indiana, 49 percent to 34 percent for Cruz and 13 percent for a third candidate, Ohio Governor John Kasich.Trump, a 69-year-old billionaire real estate developer, sounded confident in an interview on Fox News Sunday when asked whether Indiana would basically end the long-running Republican race in his favor.Yes, its over, Trump said. Its already over. The poll showed the depth of the challenge facing Cruz, a conservative U.S. senator from Texas who is trying to prevent Trump from winning the 1,237 delegates needed to seal the nomination.Cruzs hopes rest on emerging as a consensus alternative to Trump at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland on July 18-21. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, 68, leads U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, 74, of Vermont in the race for the Democratic nomination. On NBCs Meet the Press, Cruz, 45, was asked several times whether he would support Trump if the New York businessman was the Republican nominee. Cruz evaded the question each time and turned the questions into an attack on broadcast media.“I recognize that many in the media would love to see me surrender to Donald Trump because that means that Hillary wins. The media has given $2 billion in free advertising to Donald Trump, Cruz said.Cruz said he has momentum in Indiana based on his choice of former candidate Carly Fiorina for his vice president and Fridays endorsement by Indiana Governor Mike Pence.Americans will elect a successor to President Barack Obama on Nov. 8.THE MOST UNELECTABLE PERSONTrump, who has amassed 996 delegates, according to an Associated Press count, has momentum behind him and looks increasingly likely to win the nomination outright, without a contested convention, perhaps when California votes on June 7.Indiana has 57 Republican delegates. Three are awarded from each of the states nine U.S. congressional districts with the candidate who receives the most votes taking them all. The 30 others are awarded to the candidate who wins the most votes statewide. At a rally in Terre Haute, Indiana, Trump urged Republicans to join his movement and turn out for him in big numbers. The more we can win by in Indiana is so important. It’s a mandate ... a really important mandate. It’s a mandate for change, but not Obama change. Real change. It’s a mandate for genius, he said.U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a leading Republican critic of Trump, called him the most unelectable person the party could nominate. Graham had sought the nomination himself.Keep fighting Ted, Graham told CBSs Face the Nation.CLINTON URGES SANDERS QUITOn the Democratic side, front-runner Clinton told CNN’s “State of the Union” that rival Bernie Sanders has been “helpful” in bringing millions of people into the partys presidential race, but it was time for him to step aside. There comes a time when you have to look at the reality, said Clinton, who won four of the five Northeastern states that voted last Tuesday and who has a big lead in the delegate race ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia on July 25-28.But at a news conference in Washington, Sanders refused to get out, saying he believes the Democratic battle will end up in a contested convention.Sanders said it was nearly impossible for Clinton to win the 2,383 delegates needed for nomination without superdelegates, who are unelected and free to support any candidate they wish. We intend to fight for every vote and delegate remaining, he said. Clinton has 2,165 to Sanders 1,357 delegates, according to an AP count that includes superdelegates who have said whom they support. In his Fox interview, Trump defended at length his views on foreign policy, which he outlined in a speech last week in Washington that drew criticism for sometimes contradictory views. Trump said he would move quickly to destroy Islamic States militancy, but would resist interventionist policies in order to focus on nation-building at home.Trump said every move we made in the Middle East was wrong over the past 15 years, with lives and money wasted. He said he would resist such policies.Asked whether the United States should return to working with strongmen leaders like the late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, Trump said: Isn’t it too bad that we knocked him out in the first place?
