Golf: Stuard wins in New Orleans after playoff

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The 33-year-old Stuard sealed the win on the second extra hole at the TPC Louisiana, the par-five 18th, after laying up in two, hitting a superb third shot to three feet and knocking in the birdie putt. This means a lot, an emotional Stuard told Golf Channel after earning a winners cheque for US$1.26 million, a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and a spot at next years Masters. It means a lot of hard work by a lot of people to support me. Playing out of the (PGA Tours) 125-150 category and then winning this week, that makes this year and next year easy, I guess. I dont what to say.I didnt start out great today or yesterday morning, I just kind of hung in there. My short game was awesome this week and my putter was great, said Stuard, who went bogey-free throughout the tournament.Lovemark parred the second extra hole after overshooting the green with his second, failing to reach the putting surface with his third and then chipping four feet past the cup.An was ousted from the playoff after recording a bogey on the first extra hole, also the 18th.The trio had finished the 54 regulation holes at 15-under-201, An firing a seven-under 65, Stuard a 69 and Lovemark closing with a 68 after three-putting the final hole for a par.Stuard, who turned professional in 2005, had twice been a runner-up on the PGA Tour but had mainly struggled on the U.S. circuit this season until he found a new putter last week in San Antonio. My putting has kind of felt like its been coming around, so I think last week was a good buildup to this week, said Stuard, who made 44 of 44 putts from inside 10 feet this week.American Bobby Wyatt finished alone in fourth at 14 under after carding a 64 with Australian world number one Jason Day (66), Venezuelas Jhonattan Vegas (70) and American Chris Kirk (65) a further stroke back. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans was shortened to 54 holes and extended into a Monday finish after thunderstorms disrupted three of the first four days of scheduled play.It was the first Monday finish at the event since 2004.

Snooker: Selby downs Ding to win world final

Posted:

SHEFFIELD (Agencies) Mark Selby denied Asia its first snooker world champion by beating Chinas Ding Junhui 18-14 in the World Championship final on Monday. It was the second time in three years that the Englishman had won snookers most important prize.Selby was ahead throughout in the final at Sheffields Crucible Theatre in northern England, but Mondays concluding session saw Ding close the gap to 16-14 before the 2014 champion prevailed.I had a very bad start 6-0 down, I couldnt win a frame. I was a bit nervous as I hadnt been in a (World Championship) final before, Ding, who had to come through qualifying in order to reach the main draw of this years edition after dropping out of snookers top 16, told the BBC.Meanwhile a delighted Selby added: It was a tough final and with the amount of pressure Ding is under, from China alone but to play like that. I cant imagine how he could do that. In the first to 18, a 6-0 lead is not a huge one, especially against someone like Ding.He played fantastically earlier today and I had to just hang on to him. Im just over the moon. I saved my best performance for the final and I only had two good sessions in the tournament. Luckily my B game is pretty good.Victory ensured a double sporting triumph for world number one Selbys home town of Leicester in the English Midlands on Monday.Minutes before he completed his victory, Leicester City were crowned English Premier League football champions after nearest pursuers Tottenham Hotspur could only manage a 2-2 draw away to Chelsea. To be Premier League champions is a fantastic achievement and I want to say well done to (manager) Claudio (Ranieri) and the boys, said Selby. The eventual champion resumed on Monday with a 10-7 overnight lead. Ding needed a good start to the days snooker and got one by winning a 50-minute opening frame before taking the next on the black to cut Selbys lead to 11-10.However, Selby won three of the next four frames to stay in front with a healthy, but by no means decisive, lead after he went 6-0 up at the start on Sunday. In an attritional match - Sundays evening session did not finish until 2323 GMT - the pair then exchanged centuries to leave Selby narrowly ahead.Breaks of 52 and 68 then assured Selby would lead going into the concluding session. Ding pulled one back to close to within two before Selby ended the session with a break of 55.Selby then took the first two frames of the evening session to go 16-11 in front thanks to contributions of 55 and 46.Ding had a chance to close the gap in the next. Ding was well-placed at 60-31 up but Selby doubled a red into the middle pocket and then, with the scores level at 60-60, produced a superb thin cut on the last black. However, Ding then interrupted Selbys streak with a well-complied break of 73, although that still left him with a mountain to climb at 12-16 behind. But the resilient Ding then cut the deficit even further with a break of 70 before a superb contribution of 103, where he several times produced brilliant recovery shots, meant hed won three frames in a row and stopped Selby potting a ball for nearly an hour. Now Ding was just two frames behind at 14-16. The next frame lasted nearly an hour but Selby won it 59-11 before a break of 74 in the 32nd completed his march to the title.

Formula One: Rosberg downplays talk of easy title win

Posted:

SOCHI (AFP) - Nico Rosberg brushed aside any suggestions that he will enjoy an easy drive to his first drivers championship after cruising to a seventh consecutive victory in Sundays Russian Grand Prix. The 30-year-old German, winner of all four races this year and seven in succession including last season, said he expects his Mercedes team-mate, defending world champion Lewis Hamilton, to mount a strong challenge to him - despite his 43-point lead.Hamilton finished second on Sunday after another weekend of mechanical problems and other setbacks, having escaped a damaging collision on the opening lap for the first time this year.I am well aware that Lewis is going to bounce back when he has a clean weekend and it will be the usual tough battle against him, said Rosberg. Sport is all about ups and downs and I just need to make sure I prepare mentally.Hamilton drove with great vim from 10th on the grid - he was unable to run in Q3 on Saturday due to an engine failure - to finish second even after being told to slow down by his team because of another engine problem during the race.Rosbergs win lifted him alongside the only other men to have won seven races in a row, Italian Alberto Ascari and compatriots Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel, whose own race for Ferrrari was wrecked by an opening-lap collision with Daniil Kvyat of Red Bull. All three went on to win the championship, but as Rosberg pointed out when he spoke to reporters: The other people did not have Lewis Hamilton as their team-mate.Yes, I have a good points lead, but there are 425 points to go and I have only a 43-point lead now so it is completely not worth talking about.Lewis is driving as strong as ever. For sure, he will bounce back massively. He doesnt have an issue with fighting back either with his head.I am sure we will see a lot more of the battle between us and it is always going to be a tough battle.Hamilton, who appeared downcast after the race, said later that he would never give up in defence of his crown and intended to fight all the way.(Rosberg) has the buffer of knowing that, even if he has two bad weekends, he is still in the fight, which is a huge confidence boost, and generally he has been starting at the front with no-one to really bother him.So far, it has been a nice Sunday drive for him, but there are still 17 races to go and still 17 races in which I can give him hell.More seriously, Hamilton expressed concerns at the frailty of his engines this season and his loss of supply, as he has been using them rapidly, and the strong chance of facing reprimands and penalties.Im not sitting here now feeling all happy because really nothing has gone particularly well, he explained. I got myself back up there in this race, but I wasnt able to fight for the win.I believe I had a chance to win. That is the only thing in my mind. Also, I am running out of engines as the races go by. It is not hurting, not yet. It is just not great.I am aware there is likely to be one more 10-place penalty because I have one more reprimand to go - and the last one was just ridiculous. His reprimand received on Saturday was given because he failed to obey a sign on a bollard, a decision that was seen as laughable in the paddock.Meanwhile, Ferrari also believe they can still mount a challenge despite their lack of consistency and reliability. We are looking for a big challenge and ok, what has happened, it is part of the racing story, said team chief Maurizio Arrivabene. We have had bad luck and human mistakes, but I prefer to have problems now than later on.We need to make sure it doesnt happen again. The championship? We are not giving up. I dont want the team to give up.

Solar Impulse 2 takes off on next leg of round-the-world flight

Posted:

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - The Solar Impulse 2, an experimental aircraft flying around the world to draw attention to clean energy technologies, took off Monday from near San Francisco en route to the southwest city of Phoenix.Pilot Andre Borschberg took to the air just after 5:00 am (12:00 GMT). The plane had been in California for a week since crossing the Pacific to land in Mountain View.Borschberg, who has been alternating the long solo flights with his teammate, Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard, will pilot Solar Impulse across the United States and to New York. Piccard piloted the craft from Hawaii to California. The sun is rising in the horizon. It feels good to be flying round-the-world with Si2 again, Borschberg posted on Twitter. The 63-year-old adventurer took off at the early hour to take advantage of a clear weather window as he flies to Phoenix Goodyear Airport in Arizona, which should take about 16 hours and 20 minutes. The plane is crossing some 720 miles (1,160 kilometers) over the Mojave Desert. The takeoff from Moffett Airfield southeast of San Francisco marked the beginning of the 10th of 13 legs in a journey that began last year in the United Arab Emirates. The mission aims to promote the use of renewable energy, with an aircraft powered by 17,000 solar cells. The planes wingspan is wider than that of a jumbo jet but its weight is roughly the same as a family car.Solar Impulse 2 was grounded in July last year when its batteries suffered problems halfway through its 21,700-mile (35,000-kilometer) circumnavigation. The crew took several months to repair damage from tropical high temperatures during the first Pacific stage, a 4,000-mile flight between Japan and Hawaii. The aircraft was flown on that leg by Borschberg, whose 118-hour journey smashed the previous record of 76 hours and 45 minutes set by US adventurer Steve Fossett in 2006.Born in Zurich, Borschberg is no stranger to adventure -- 15 years ago he narrowly escaped an avalanche, and then in 2013 he was involved in a helicopter crash that left him with minor injuries. He took catnaps of only 20 minutes at a time to maintain control of the pioneering plane during his arduous flight from Japan, in what his team described as difficult conditions.Piccard, a 58-year-old doctor by training, already completed the first non-stop round-the-world balloon flight in 1999.The solar-powered plane, which stores energy in batteries for when the sun is not shining, will stop in New York before a transatlantic flight to Europe. From there, the pilots plan to make their way back to the point of departure in Abu Dhabi.

Oil prices fall further from 2016 peak

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Worries about excess oil supply and uncertain demand combined on Monday to push oil prices lower for a second straight session.Reports of rising output in both Iraq and Iran slowed the momentum that lifted oil prices to their highest level in 2016 last week, analysts said.Iraqi exports hit a near-record 3.36 million barrels a day in April, Bloomberg News reported, estimating that Irans output during the month reached 3.5 million barrels per day, the most since December 2011.The petroleum markets have tipped to the downside in light May Day holiday trade on concern that OPEC production is on the rise, Citi Futures analyst Tim Evans said.Adding to the concerns, Chinese data showed factory activity slowed in April compared to the month before. The oil price declines were appropriate because the rally in prices over the last month has not been justified, Kyle Cooper of IAF Advisors said. The market is giving back a little bit of what in my mind it shouldnt have had in the first place, he said.US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for June delivery fell US$1.14 to US$44.78 a barrel. In London, Brent North Sea oil for delivery in July shed US$1.54 to US$45.83 a barrel.

Dollar falls against euro after manufacturing data

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar fell against the euro on Monday after eurozone manufacturing data outshone a similar US report. The euro, which hit a session high of US$1.1536 and for the first time in nine months was trading above US$1.15, was fetching a tick below that, at US$1.1535, around 2100 GMT. On Friday, the greenback traded at US$1.1452 per euro. The Markit eurozone PMI index for manufacturing was revised slightly higher for April, although growth in the 19-nation bloc remained lackluster.Later in the day, the Institute for Supply Management issued its US manufacturing PMI, which showed growth slowing in the same month and at a weaker-than-expected pace. Most of the strengthening in the euro came after the ISM numbers, said Eric Viloria, currency strategist at Wells Fargo Securities. The move above US$1.15, previously seen as a resistance level, could also have seen some further follow-through.Traders remained largely focused on Japan, where the yen, already strong since the beginning of the year, soared last week after the Bank of Japans decision to not provide more stimulus to the ailing economy. The dollar and the euro advanced slightly against the yen, paring back some of last weeks losses.Japans economy minister call the recent strength in the yen extremely concerning but without commitment from the BOJ to ease policy further, a reversal in the yens rally looks unlikely, said Omer Esiner of Commonwealth Foreign Exchange.

US tells Pakistan it will have to fund F-16s itself

Posted:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States has told Pakistan it will have to finance the purchase of US F-16 fighter jets itself after members of the US Congress objected to the use of government funds to pay for them. The US government said in February it had approved the sale to Pakistan of up to eight F-16 fighter jets built by Lockheed Martin Corp LMT.N, as well as radar and other equipment in a deal valued at US$699 million. However, Republican Senator Bob Corker said he would use his power as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to bar the use of any US funds for the deal to send a message to Pakistan that it needed to do more in the war against militants.Corkers stance reflected deep unhappiness among both Democrats and Republicans in Congress about what they see as Islamabad’s policy of supporting militant groups that target Afghans and Americans, and Pakistans failure to support the reconciliation process for Afghanistan.US State Department spokesman John Kirby said congressional opposition meant funds from the US governments Foreign Military Financing allocation could not be used to purchase the aircraft.Given congressional objections, we have told the Pakistanis that they should put forward national funds for that purpose, he told a regular news briefing.Kirby said the State Department opposed putting conditions on the use of such funds and believed that effective engagement with Pakistan, including by supporting its counter-terrorism effort, was critical to promoting democracy and economic stability in the country.Earlier, in Islamabad, Syed Tariq Fatemi, special assistant on foreign affairs to Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, did not refer directly to the F-16 issue, but complained that there was a lack of sufficient appreciation for Pakistans whole-hearted efforts it was undertaking jointly with the US administration, in countering the threat posed by terrorism.Fatemi made the remarks in a meeting with visiting professional staffers from the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee.Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) said in March it was using its own funds to pay suppliers and stave off closure of its F-16 fighter jet production line as it waited to finalise orders from Pakistan and other countries.

Injured Marsh out of IPL, Bailey joins Pune

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Australian batsman Shaun Marsh has been ruled out of the rest of the Indian Premier League with an injury, while another Kangaroo player George Bailey made his season entry with Team Pune, Australias cricket board said Monday.Marsh, who played six matches for IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab this season, is set to join national teammates John Hastings (Kolkata Knight Riders), Mitchell Marsh and Steve Smith (Rising Pune Supergiants) back home.Marsh though -- unlike Hastings, brother Mitchell and Smith -- is not part of the 16-man Australia squad named for the West Indies tri-series starting June 3, which also involves South Africa.Marsh picked up the injury during the game on April 19 against Kolkata Knight Riders and seemed to have carried the back niggle ever since, the Cricket Australia website said.Meanwhile Bailey signed up for the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led Pune to give some hope to the teams stuttering campaign, which was further hit by a string of injuries to its foreign recruits.Englishman Kevin Pietersen and South Africas Faf du Plessis were two early casualties before Mitchell and Smith also pulled out due to injury.Bailey, who had captained the Punjab team in the previous edition, went unsold in the February auctions only to make a late entry into the cash-rich league. We lost four crucial players, but we are looking ahead, said Pune chief executive Raghu Iyer.Bailey has tremendous experience and had a very successful season before last. He can contribute to the leadership group.Smiths (injury news) been a bummer. He was just coming into his own and this happened. It is a challenging time. Before we could settle down we lost the core group of players around whom you build a team.
