Bulk of world's child deaths in just 10 countries: study

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Sixty percent of the 5.9 million children under five who died last year were in just 10 countries in Africa and Asia, an evaluation of global infant health revealed Friday.Pneumonia was the leading killer in five of them, all in Africa: Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Nigeria and Tanzania, said a study published in The Lancet medical journal. In Bangladesh, Indonesia, India and Pakistan, the main cause of death was preterm birth complications -- also the global leader -- while in China birth defects claimed most of the children who never made their fifth birthday.Accelerated investment in child survival is imperative, to meet the UNs Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the authors wrote. These targets include an under-five mortality rate of no more than 25 per 1,000 births in every country by 2030.The worst-performing countries today lose more than 90 children under five per 1,000 live births, said the researchers, citing including Angola, Central African Republic, Chad, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Somalia. The team recommended the uptake of breastfeeding, providing vaccines for pneumonia, malaria and diarrhoea, and improving water and sanitation, to prevent child deaths in the worst-afflicted nations of the world. In countries with low death rates such as the United States and Russia with fewer than 10 per 1,000 births, the causes were very different -- mainly birth defects, complications from preterm delivery, and injuries such as stove burns, car accidents or drowning. The study said nearly half -- 2.7 million -- of the 5.9 million children lost last year died within their first 28 days. The research was funded by the UNs World Health Organization and the Bill & Melinda Gates philanthropic organisation.Globally, four million fewer under-five children died in 2015 than in 2000, the researchers found. This represented a 53-percent decline -- short of the two-thirds reduction target for 1990-2015 set in the Millennium Development Goals which preceded the SDGs.The slowest progress, said the new study, was in reducing newborn deaths.Child survival has improved substantially since the Millennium Development Goals were set, the studys lead author Li Liu of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said. The problem is that this progress is uneven across all countries, meaning a high child death rate persists in many countries. In a comment on the study, also published by The Lancet, Peter Byass of the Umea Centre for Global Research in Sweden said it was an indictment that researchers had to rely on estimates and not real, recorded numbers.Only a small proportion of under-five deaths are properly documented, especially in poor countries.Despite the global information revolution -- resulting in a single modern 256 GB laptop having enough capacity to hold a 250-character record on each of the 670 million under-five children in the world, with space left over for full details of each of the six million annual under-five deaths -- such data are simply neither collected nor available, he wrote. That six million under-five children continue to die every year in our 21st century world is unacceptable, but even worse is that we seem collectively unable to count, and hence be accountable for, most of those individual deaths.

BELO HORIZONTE (AFP) - Neymar scored his 50th international goal as Brazil thrashed arch-rivals Argentina 3-0 in their 2018 World Cup qualifying duel here Thursday.Barcelona superstar Neymar took his tally to 50 goals in 74 games as Brazil recorded their fifth consecutive victory under new coach Tite to remain on top of South Americas qualification table.Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho also scored Football: Half century for Neymar as Brazil crush Argentinaas the Brazilians made a triumphant return to the Estadio Mineiro, scene of their 7-1 2014 World Cup semi-final humiliation against Germany.Brazil now head the 10-team round-robin competition with 24 points from 11 games. But the defeat deepens the sense of crisis enveloping Argentina, who have taken just two points from their last four games and now languish in sixth place overall, one spot outside the qualifying positions for the finals in Russia.Brazil powered into a 2-0 lead in the first half after two wonderfully worked goals from Coutinho and Neymar.Argentina had started brightly, with Lionel Messi drawing a foul from Fernandinho in the opening minutes which earned the Manchester City midfielder a yellow card from Chilean referee Julio Bascunan. The Argentines created the first chance of the evening when Lucas Biglias venomous shot from outside the area was well saved by Brazil goalkeeper Alisson on 23 minutes. But after weathering the early pressure Brazil began to probe more effectively and on 25 minutes took the lead through Coutinho. The Liverpool playmaker gathered the ball wide out on the left flank and accelerated purposefully towards the Argentina area. The attacking midfielders pace took him past Nicolas Otamendi with ease before he unleashed a thunderous strike that crashed into the top corner. It got better on the stroke of half-time when Neymar completed his half-century of international goals.Another clinical Brazil attack culminated with teenage star Gabriel Jesus splitting the Argentine defence with an exquisite pass that sent Neymar through on goal. The Barcelona striker coolly rolled his finish past the advancing Sergio Romero and Brazil were in complete control.Neymar -- still only 24 -- is now closing in on Romarios mark of 55 goals and is firmly on track to surpass Peles record haul of 77 goals in 91 games.Brazil were quick to get into their stride in the second half, and Paulinho nearly made it 3-0 only to be denied by a Pablo Zabaleta goal-line clearance on 55 minutes.Paulinho made no mistake four minutes later though, tucking away a close range finish after a low cross from Renato Augusto.

Obama, Trump hold 'excellent' White House talks

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Barack Obama and Donald Trump on Thursday put past animosity aside during a 90-minute White House meeting designed to quell fears about the health of the worlds pre-eminent democracy. As protests against the Republican property moguls shock election rumbled across US cities and world capitals contended with a suddenly uncertain world order, Obama and Trump vowed to carry out a smooth transition of power. After a nasty campaign that culminated in the election of a 70-year-old billionaire who has never held public office and who gained power on a far-right platform, the message was: this is business as usual in a democracy. The outgoing Democratic president and his successor huddled one-on-one in the Oval Office, for what Obama characterized as an excellent conversation and then put on a remarkably civil joint public appearance. It is important for all of us, regardless of party and regardless of political preferences, to now come together, work together, to deal with the many challenges that we face, Obama said.Trump appeared more subdued than usual, and was unusually cautious and deferential in his remarks.Mr President, it was a great honor being with you, Trump said, calling Obama a very good man.The meeting, which came less than 36 hours after Trumps shock election victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton, had the potential to be awkward. After all, Trump championed the so-called birther movement challenging that Obama was actually born in the United States -- a suggestion laden with deep racial overtones -- only dropping the position recently. And if the president-elect fulfills his campaign promises, he will unravel almost all of Obamas signature achievements.Trump -- who previously called Obama the most ignorant president in our history -- said he looked forward to receiving the presidents counsel.Obama -- who previously said Trump was a whiner and uniquely unqualified to be commander-in-chief -- vowed his support. He told Trump that his administration would do everything we can to help you succeed, because if you succeed, then the country succeeds. The two men ended the improbable and historic White House encounter with a handshake and refused to take questions, appearing to find common cause in their opinion of the press.Heres a good rule. Dont answer questions when they just start yelling, Obama told Trump.White House officials said that the two men had discussed a range of issues including global hotspots and Obamas meetings next week abroad with leaders from Germany, Greece and across the Asia-Pacific.On that trip, Obama is likely to be inundated with panicked questions about Americas role in world affairs. The White House hopes that by rolling out the red carpet for Trump, they can bind him to some of the conventions of the office.Trump then traveled to Capitol Hill to meet Republican leaders who had been at best cool to him winning their partys nomination. The president-elect proclaimed that health care, border security and jobs will be his top three priorities when he moves to the White House next January. He held talks with House Speaker Paul Ryan and then with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. We had a very detailed meeting, Trump told reporters. As you know, health care -- were going to make it affordable. We are going to do a real job on health care, he said.Trump made repealing Obamacare, and building a border wall between the United States and Mexico, pillars of his presidential campaign.Trump said he and the Republican majority in Congress were going to accomplish absolutely spectacular things for the American people, adding he was eager to get started.Afterwards, following an hour-long meeting with McConnell on the other side of the Capitol, Trump stood at the Senate majority leaders side and stressed that we have a lot to do.Were going to look very strongly at immigration, he said. Were going to look very strongly at health care, and were looking at jobs -- big league jobs.Trump did not elaborate.Team Trump unveiled a transition website -- www.greatagain.gov -- that highlights the colossal human resources challenge facing the incoming administration under the headline Help wanted: 4,000 presidential appointees.During a bitter campaign that tugged at Americas democratic fabric, the tycoon pledged to deport illegal immigrants, ban Muslims from the country and tear up free-trade deals. Those campaign messages were embraced by a large section of America, grown increasingly disgruntled by the scope of social and economic change under Obama. But they were passionately rejected by Clinton supporters.Protesters turned out for a second day in cities across America from New York to Los Angeles to express continued opposition to the incoming leader they accuse of racism, sexism and xenophobia. Thousands had rallied on Wednesday.

Muslim students targetted in California campus attacks

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Authorities at two universities in California said Thursday police were investigating attacks against female Muslim students, one of which was described as a hate crime. Both attacks came on Wednesday, the day after Donald Trump was elected president at the end of a campaign during which the Republican was criticized for divisive and inflammatory language against Muslims. In one of the incidents, two assailants confronted their victim at San Diego State University and made comments about President-elect Trump and the Muslim community, according to campus police. The woman had her purse, backpack and car keys stolen. She went to get help and returned to the scene with police officers, only to find her car had been stolen, police spokesman Ronald Broussard said. The case was being investigated as a suspected hate crime as well as a strong-arm robbery and auto theft, Broussard said.Comments made to the student indicate she was targeted because of her Muslim faith, including her wearing of a traditional garment and hijab, university president Elliot Hirshman and interim police chief Josh Mays said in a joint statement.San Jose State University police said in a statement they were investigating a similar attack against a female student at a campus parking garage.A male assailant approached the victim from behind, pulling at the victims head scarf, choking and throwing her off balance, according to the statement circulated to students on Wednesday.Campus officials are closely monitoring the situation as the investigation continues. No arrests have been made, university spokeswoman Pat Harris said in an emailed statement to AFP.We are, of course, very concerned that this has occurred on our campus. No one should experience this kind of behavior at San Jose State, she added.New York Universitys Muslim Students Association issued a statement on Wednesday saying engineering undergraduates had arrived that morning to find Trump scrawled on the door of their prayer room. The organization said members were realizing that our campus is not immune to the bigotry that grips America.A Muslim student at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette told police on Wednesday that she was attacked by two men, one of whom was wearing a white hat emblazoned with Trump.Local media reported a police statement on Thursday however alleging that the girl had made up the attack. The Lafayette Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Battle for IS-held Mosul nears ancient site

Posted:

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The battle for Iraqs second city Mosul neared the remains of ancient Nimrud on Thursday, as the offensive against the Islamic State groups Syrian stronghold Raqa was hampered by a sandstorm.Backed by a US-led coalition, Iraqi forces and a Kurdish-Arab militia alliance are advancing on Mosul and Raqa in separate assaults aimed at driving IS from its last major bastions. The coalition, which launched air strikes against IS two years ago, is looking to deal a fatal blow to the self-styled caliphate the jihadists declared in mid-2014.Launched on October 17, the Iraqi offensive has seen federal forces and Kurdish peshmerga fighters advance on Mosul from the east, south and north, pushing inside the eastern city limits last week.On Thursday the military said troops and allied militia were moving forward on two IS-held villages near Nimrud, which is some 30 kilometres (20 miles) south of Mosul.Units of the 9th Armoured Division and the Hashed al-Ashaeri (tribal militia) are beginning to advance to liberate the villages of Abbas Rajab and Al-Nomaniyah, toward Nimrud, the Joint Operations Command said, later announcing that Abbas Rajab had been retaken.Nimrud was the one of the great centres of the ancient Middle East. Founded in the 13th century BC, it became the capital of the Assyrian empire, whose rulers built vast palaces and monuments that have drawn archaeologists for more than 150 years. In April last year, IS posted video on the internet of its fighters sledgehammering monuments before planting explosives around the site and blowing it up.It was part of a campaign of destruction against heritage sites under jihadist control that also took in ancient Nineveh on the outskirts of Mosul, Hatra in the desert to the south and Palmyra in neighbouring Syria.IS says the ancient monuments are idols that violate the teachings of its extreme form of Sunni Islam. In Syria, the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said their advance on Raqa was being held back by a sandstorm that had hit the desert province. The situation is dangerous today because there is no visibility due to a desert sandstorm, an SDF commander told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. We fear that Daesh will take advantage of this to move in and launch a counter-attack, he said, using an Arabic acronym for IS.Speaking in Ain Issa, the main staging point for the operation some 50 kilometres (30 miles) north of Raqa, the commander said the sandstorm was also impeding visibility for coalition warplanes. The SDF launched the offensive on Saturday and has been pushing south from areas near the Turkish border towards Raqa. The commander said SDF forces advancing south from Ain Issa and Suluk were close to converging at a position some 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Raqa.We have been able to cover a third of the distance that separated us from Raqa, SDF spokeswoman Jihan Sheikh Ahmed said, adding that 15 villages and hamlets had been taken.Ahmed said thousands of civilians had fled their homes since the start of the assault and pleaded for international assistance.More than 5,000 displaced people have arrived in regions liberated and secured by our forces. They are coming from combat zones through a corridor we opened for them, she said.We need international help because our capacities are limited and, with winter coming, there is no camp to host them, she said.Dozens of families have been seen fleeing towards SDF lines in recent days. Many have been arriving in trucks and cars around Ain Issa, loaded down with belongings and in some cases with livestock including cows and sheep.Raqa had a population of some 240,000 before the eruption of Syrias civil war in 2011 but more than 80,000 people have since fled there from other parts of the country.Mosul is much bigger, home to more than a million people, and more than 45,000 people have fled since the offensive began.Aid workers have expressed fears of a major humanitarian crisis once fighting begins in earnest inside the city, where IS is expected to use civilians as human shields.Rights groups have also raised concerns for fleeing civilians, amid accusations of abuses by some Iraqi forces.Amnesty International called Thursday on the Iraqi government to investigate the killings of six residents south of Mosul who it said were executed by men in federal police uniforms during the offensive.Iraqs federal police issued a statement denying its forces had been involved in extrajudicial killings.

Russia rejects UN plea for longer Aleppo ceasefires

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Russias defence ministry on Thursday dismissed as counterproductive a request from the United Nations to extend future pauses in fighting to allow aid into rebel-held eastern Aleppo as winter comes. The ministry said it received a request from the head of a UN-backed humanitarian taskforce for Syria, Jan Egeland, to make future breaks in fighting longer to allow in aid supplies. But Russia in a statement quoting spokesman Igor Konashenkov said it was counterproductive and against common sense to extend the ceasefires just for the sake of it, not to bring real help to peaceful civilians, but so that terrorists can better restore their battleworthiness.Egeland earlier Thursday warned that the last food rations were now being distributed in eastern Aleppo after four months of deadlock.I dont think anybody wants a quarter of a million people to be starving in east Aleppo, Egeland said, referring to the number of civilians the UN says are living under siege. Russia has held a series of unilateral ceasefires that saw Syrian forces on the ground halt fire to allow rebels and civilians to quit east Aleppo, although very few have done so, with many expressing scepticism about the declared safe passages. Russia held a 10-hour pause in fighting on November 4 and a three-day truce in late October. Russia said Thursday that it had brought more than 100,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to Aleppo in recent months irrespective of any humanitarian pauses. Those who really want to help the residents of Aleppo, are helping them, the ministry said. Russia, a long-term ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, launched air strikes to back up his forces in September last year.Moscow says it has halted airstrikes on east Aleppo since October 18 after a month-long ferocious bombardment of Syrias second city that killed hundreds of civilians and hit health facilities, sparking international condemnation.

Fresh protests erupt in several US states over Trump win

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - Hundreds of people, many of them students who skipped classes, staged fresh protests on Thursday in several US cities in anger at Donald Trumps election as president. Some 1,000 students, most of them high schoolers, marched through San Franciscos financial district toward City Hall chanting Not my president and blocking traffic. We are protesting because we want to stand up for our rights and we deserve to be heard, Pamela Campos, 18, told the San Francisco Chronicle.Donald Trump is just racist. Hes attacking all the immigrants, all the Muslims. I saw all my classmates crying yesterday.Students held walkouts in several other cities in northern California, including Napa and Hayward. In Los Angeles, several hundred students marched at the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) campus carrying placards that read Dump Trump and Love trumps hate.Initially, I accepted his election but yesterday when I saw Hillarys concession speech I couldnt avoid crying, Daisy Rivera, 24, told AFP, referring to Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.I cant believe we have that racist, xenophobic, misogynist elected president. In New York, some 200 anti-Trump protesters gathered at Washington Square Park in Manhattan. Student demonstrations were also reported in Texas and elsewhere across the country.Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of American cities on Wednesday to express outrage over Trumps shock election.Demonstrations were also being planned over the weekend.During the presidential campaign many Americans expressed outrage over Trumps rhetoric on immigrants, Muslims and refugees, and some fear he will act on those policies once he becomes president on January 20.

Palestinian president says he knows who killed Arafat

Posted:

RAMALLAH (AFP) - Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas said Thursday he knew who killed Yasser Arafat as he marked the 12th anniversary of the former leaders death but stopped short from giving a name.Speaking in front of thousands, Abbas said you ask me who killed him, I know -- but my testimony alone is not enough.A commission of inquiry is digging into that, but youll find out at the earliest opportunity and be amazed when you know who did it.I do not want to mention names, because these names do not deserve to be remembered, he added.Arafat rose to become the leader of the Palestinian movement in the late 1960s, leading an armed struggle against Israel. He died on November 11, 2004 at a hospital near Paris from unknown causes at the age of 75. More than a decade after his death, he remains a towering figure in Palestinian culture, politics and society. The Palestinians have long accused Israel of poisoning him, charges the Israeli government firmly denies. His body was exhumed in 2012 for tests but a subsequent French investigation found no proof of poisoning. The Palestinians rejected that report, citing apparent inconsistencies between the French findings and separate ones from Switzerland and Russia that gave currency to alleged poisoning by polonium. Abbas and his longtime rival Mohammed Dahlan have both accused each other of complicity in Arafats death in the past.Abbass comments came with some Arab countries reportedly pressuring the 81-year-old to allow Dahlan, who has been in exile in the United Arab Emirates, to return to the West Bank. Those moves come amid talk of who will succeed Abbas.Sources in Abbas Fatah movement said Arafats death could be discussed at the partys seventh annual conference, with the commission of inquiry potentially announcing its conclusions. The conference will be held on November 29.

Sharapova to return as UN goodwill ambassador

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - Maria Sharapova will once again be a UN goodwill ambassador when her doping ban expires in April and she returns to international tennis competition, a UN statement said Thursday. The United Nations had suspended Sharapovas role as goodwill ambassador in March after she failed a drug test, putting a hold on a nine-year partnership with the UN Development Programme.UNDP was glad to learn that Maria Sharapova can return to the sport she loves sooner than expected and we will lift the suspension of her role as our goodwill ambassador once the reduced ban expires in April 2017, said a UNDP spokesperson. We understand that Ms. Sharapova will be focused on resuming her tennis career and we look forward to discussing her role and engagement with UNDP at an appropriate date.Last month, the Russian stars 24-month ban for testing positive for meldonium was cut to 15 months by the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport. Sharapova, 29, had admitted using meldonium for 10 years to help treat illnesses, a heart issue and a magnesium deficiency. As a goodwill ambassador, Sharapova has been active in helping recovery efforts after the 1986 Chernobyl disaster. The tennis sensation has made visits to Belarus and donated $100,000 to support youth projects in rural areas that suffer from the after-affects of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.Sharapovas family fled the city of Gomel in Belarus in 1987 after the Chernobyl disaster, moving to Siberia where the tennis star was born. The family lived in Nyagan, Siberia for two years and then moved to Sochi on the Black Sea where Sharapova took her first tennis lessons.

World Bank projects 5.4 pc growth for Pakistan in 2018

Posted:

KARACHI (AFP) - Pakistans economy is set to grow by a robust 5.4 percent by 2018 as Chinese investment from a multi-billion dollar infrastructure project flows into the country, the World Bank predicted in a new report Thursday. The cash-strapped country, for years plagued by a bloody homegrown Taliban insurgency, has been battling to get its shaky economy back on track and solve a chronic energy crisis that cripples its industry. But now confidence in South Asias second-biggest economy is growing, with security improving and the International Monetary Fund claiming in October that it has emerged from economic crisis after completing a bailout programme, though it still faces major challenges.Pakistan recorded a 4.7 percent growth in gross domestic product (GDP) for the fiscal year ended June 2016, the highest rate in eight years, and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has set an ambitious target of 5.7 percent for the current year.He is banking on structural reforms, the improved energy sector, taxation -- and Chinas ambitious $46 billion infrastructure project, the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), linking its western province of Xinjiang to the Arabian Sea via Pakistan. The World Bank report appeared optimistic about his plans, predicting even further growth in 2018.The pace of Pakistans economic growth will accelerate to 5.4 percent in fiscal 2018, the Bank report said, observing that a moderate increase in investment mainly related to CPEC projects is expected to contribute to an acceleration of growth. The Bank also noted Pakistans efforts to address grinding poverty, including with revised ways to measure it.Based on the revised poverty line..., the percentage of people living below the poverty line decreased from 64.3 percent in 2002 to 29.5 percent in 2014, the report said.Illango Patchamutu, World Bank country director for Pakistan, said the country needs to push forward with deeper structural reforms, and that the World Bank stood ready to support such an agenda.
