British PM May warns MPs against blocking Brexit

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - British Prime Minister Theresa May warned lawmakers on Sunday not to block Brexit, after the High Court ruled that she cannot start the process of leaving the European Union without parliaments approval. The Conservative government has said it will appeal Thursdays court decision and May told EU leaders on Friday that she believes it has a strong case.In a statement published ahead of a trade mission to India, May cautioned members of parliament against using the ruling to undermine the result of the June referendum. The result was clear. It was legitimate. MPs and peers who regret the referendum result need to accept what the people decided, she said.Supporters of Brexit responded angrily to the courts decision, amid speculation that pro-European lawmakers would seek to water down the break with the EU and derail Mays plans to begin formal exit talks by the end of March. Now we need to turn our minds to how we get the best outcome for our country, the prime minister said. That means sticking to our plan and timetable, getting on with the work of developing our negotiating strategy and not putting all our cards on the table. That is not in our national interest and it wont help us get the best deal for Britain. The High Court ruled that the government does not have the power to trigger Article 50 of the EUs Lisbon Treaty, which would set off a two-year countdown to leaving the bloc, without the prior approval of parliament.May is expected to sign a host of commercial deals during her visit to India, her first trip outside Europe since taking over from David Cameron, who stepped down after the Brexit vote.

Atletico Madrid stunned by Real Sociedad in La Liga

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Atletico Madrids La Liga title hopes suffered another serious setback as two Real Sociedad penalties inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Champions League finalists on Saturday.Carlos Vela opened the scoring nine minutes into the second half before handing responsibilities from the spot to Willian Jose to seal Sociedads third straight win 15 minutes from time.A second league defeat in three games means Atletico remain three points behind league leaders Real Madrid, but their city rivals can extend that advantage to six when they host Leganes on Sunday.Atletico host Real in a rematch of the Champions League final after the international break on November 19.There are no excuses. They played better and thats all, said Atletico defender Juanfran, who missed the vital penalty in Mays Champions League final. We have more time to prepare for an important game, lift our heads and I am sure we will win at home.Diego Simeones men had sealed their place in the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday with a stoppage-time victory over FC Rostov, but suffered a European hangover in an insipid display lacking in energy and invention. We dont look for excuses, added Simeone. The opponents prepared well and played very well in the second-half.Real Sociedad dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Atletico who had the best chance before half-time when Kevin Gameiro was played in by Yannick Carrasco and was unfortunate to see his chip over Geronimo Rulli come back off the post.A tight game swung decisively the home sides way when left-back Yuri burst into the box just after the break and was upended by Atletico captain Gabi.Vela stepped up to coolly send Jan Oblak the wrong way for his fourth goal of the season. The Mexican blasted a great chance to seal the win over as La Real threatened to pick Atletico off on the counter-attack.However, Vela was key for the second goal as he led another break and was chopped down by Angel Correa.Willian Jose also sent the helpless Oblak the wrong way from the spot to move the Basque to within two points of Atletico in sixth. At the other end of the table, Granada remain rooted to the bottom and without a win this season after a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo la Coruna.Florin Andone handed the visitors the lead, but an own goal from Deportivo keeper Przemyslaw Tyton salvaged a point for Granada nine minutes from time.Osasuna also remain in the relegation zone as Christian Santoss penalty 13 minutes from time handed Alaves a 1-0 win in Pamplona.

Zidane not satisfied with Real Madrid's squad

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane insists his squad of superstars cant rest on their laurels after blowing a 2-0 lead to draw 3-3 with Polish champions Legia Warsaw in midweek.Zidanes men return to La Liga action on Sunday at home to Leganes and the Frenchman wants a more rounded performance from his side.I always think that I have the best squad in the world, but at the same time that is not enough, said Zidane on Saturday.Only Mateo Kovacics equaliser five minutes from time prevented Reals 27-game unbeaten streak coming to an end in the most unlikely fashion as Legia took their frist Champions League point for 21 years. We need to go out onto the pitch and always play at our top level for 90 minutes. To be persistent is the hardest thing in football.Despite their unbeaten run and still enjoying a two-point lead at the top of La Liga, Madrid havent kept a clean sheet in 10 games in all competitions.Zidane will once again be without his preferred central defensive pairing of captain Sergio Ramos and Pepe due to injury on Sunday, but called on the whole team to defend better as a unit.It doesnt worry me. I dont like conceding goals and the players like it even less, but it is a question for everyone, not just the four defenders, added Zidane. We can all improve and what I am going to try to do is impose more calm.Real have received a big injury boost, though, with the return of Luka Modric after a month on the sidelines due to knee surgery. The Croatian is likely to start on the bench against Leganes, but Zidane hopes to hand Modric some game time in the second-half.He is in the squad. The idea is that he will have minutes and well see tomorrow. The important thing is that he is ok and has completely recovered.Zidane confirmed that Karim Benzema will miss out due to a hamstring problem so Alvaro Morata will join Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo in attack.

Three days out, Trump and Clinton add emergency campaign stops

Posted:

WILMINGTON, United States (AFP) - Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton raced to add last minute campaign stops Saturday, scrambling for votes in the final three days of a White House race that has the world on edge.Clintons camp mocked Trumps scatter-shot 10-states-in-three-days approach to the electoral map, claiming that the Republican property tycoon was grasping at straws. But the 69-year-old former secretary of state herself added an extra stopover in Michigan, a state that should be safely hers, suggesting the race may be closer than either side admits.Whether or not he is feeling the pressure, the 70-year-old billionaire populists rhetoric remained triumphalist. We are just three days from the change you have been waiting for your entire life Trump declared in Wilmington, North Carolina, where he and his wife Melania fired up thousands of raucous supporters. He hit his key themes: promises to tear up free trade agreements, expel undocumented migrants, rebuild an allegedly depleted US military and purge Washington of corruption. And his fans roared back the same three-word chants: Build the wall, Drain the swamp, Lock her up. But those chanting were already Trump voters. After Florida and North Carolina, Trump was headed for Nevada later Saturday and on Sunday to Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Virginia. On Monday, the eve of polling day, he will head back to Florid, North Carolina and Pennsylvania -- then on for a grand finale in New Hampshire.Clintons campaign manager Robby Mook was scathing, telling reporters: It looks like hes just trying to go everywhere all at once.Mook argued that Trumps packed schedule was sign of panic that he has failed to break through into Democratic territory. But Clintons late decision to head to Michigan on Monday and to add a midnight rally in North Carolina as Monday shades into election day raised eyebrows.Mook dismissed suggestions that Clinton is bidding to shore up her crumbling firewall in the north, and predicted she would overturn Trumps opinion poll lead in Florida.Donald Trump has to win all of these battleground races, he said. If we win Pennsylvania and Florida, he just has no path. The campaigns claims and counterclaims resound far beyond the United States.Americas allies are fearful that a candidate who has threatened to review US treaty alliances is within striking distance of the White House. And foes like Russia and Iran have not hidden their mirth at the turmoil rocking US democracy.Global markets fear an inexperienced demagogue with a protectionist bent could plunge the United States or even the world economy back into recession. The polls are unclear. Clinton, the 69-year-old former secretary of state, senator and first lady, still enjoys a narrow nationwide advantage, a two percentage point lead according to a poll average by tracker RealClearPolitics. But the election will be won or lost in the US electoral college, and here perhaps a dozen key states are in play. Trumps camp believes it can pick off enough of them to push him over the 270 electoral vote threshold on November 8.Trumps campaign has been torpedoed and holed but not yet sunk by allegations of sexual assault and the candidates own off-color outbursts.Meanwhile, the long-running saga of Clintons inappropriate use of a private email server -- fed by announcements and leaks from FBI investigators -- continues to cast a cloud over her pitch as the competent professional. But as the race comes down to the wire, she has tried to pierce through the pessimism with a more upbeat message, bringing in heavyweight support from President Barack Obama and global megastars like singer Beyonce and her rapper husband Jay-Z.Rain put a dampener on her early rally in Pembroke Pines, Florida, but she was determined to build on the high of the previous nights musical spectacular in Ohio, where Beyonce helped her champion diversity and female empowerment. We are seeing tremendous momentum, large numbers of people turning out, breaking records in a lot of places, she declared, in reference to the early and mail voting permitted in several US states.Lets vote for the future she added through the downpour, urging those who had already cast their ballots to mobilize to get their friends to the polls.Earlier, at an event in Miami, her supporters had launched into a three-word get out the vote chant of their own: Knock on doors Knock on doorsPolling and anecdotal evidence suggests that Clinton supporters, in particular previously underrepresented Latino voters, have come out strongly in Nevada and Florida. Both Nevada and Florida were won by Clintons fellow Democrat Obama in 2012, but had been leaning towards Trump. Respected forecasters FiveThirtyEights still give Trump a slight edge in both in polling averages.Yet the groups polls plus forecast -- incorporating economic and historical data -- now has Clinton as a relatively safe winner in Nevada.A loss in Florida, with its 29 electoral votes, would all but doom Trumps chances, while his hopes for victory rest on an unlikely but now not impossible breakthrough in one of the Democratic-leaning states in the north, like Pennsylvania.

Cook hails Anderson's return for India Tests

Posted:

MUMBAI (AFP) - Captain Alastair Cook on Saturday hailed top bowler Jimmy Andersons surprise return from injury as he insisted England would revel in their status as underdogs during their tour of India.Cook said that Anderson, Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker with 463 scalps, had been given the all-clear following a shoulder problem and could arrive in India as early as Tuesday. Its really good news. Hes ready to come so its just about trying to get him out to Rajkot as quick as we can, Cook, 31, told reporters in Mumbai. The first Test of the five-match series starts in Rajkot, in western Gujarat state, on Wednesday as India seek revenge for a home series loss to England four years ago.The powerful Anderson will miss the opening Test but could be ready to lead Englands attack for the second match, which starts in Andhra Pradesh state, on November 17, said Cook.Anderson suffered a fractured shoulder blade last summer and had been dogged by a recurrence of the injury but passed fitness tests back home on Friday while the rest of the England squad were already training in India.I was chatting to him yesterday and the second Test is a good possibility. Well know when we see how his body reacts when hes out here, said the skipper.Anderson took more wickets than any other pace bowler on either side when England won the 2012 series in India and Cook believes the fired-up 34-year-old could be the difference again.Hes worked incredibly hard to get back and has come back so much quicker than we thought.Hes up for it and is not just coming here to make up the numbers so thats great for us. He wants to make a difference in this series, Cook told a post-training press conference.India are number one in the world and have not lost a Test series at home since left-handed batsman Cook expertly lead England to a 2-1 victory four years ago.Englands spin attack is weaker than it was back then when Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar excelled on Indian soil but Cook is confident that his side can spring a surprise.Unfortunately we havent quite got that experience of probably top quality spinners. (But) Mo (Moeen Ali) has been very successful against India in the past.Rash (Adil Rashid) has done very well in One Day Cricket and we probably havent seen the best of him in Test cricket yet.(So) weve actually got more options in this squad than we did in the last squad, he said.Cook warned critics not to write off his team even if they do lose in the opening Test recalling his sides heroics the last time they toured India.I remember sitting in a press conference after the first Test and everyone was talking about how youre going to stop India winning 4-0 and we managed to turn it around and win 2-1. It shows that anything is possible.England are looking to bounce back from a humiliating defeat to minnows Bangladesh last week and Cook believes that being underdogs, rather than favourites, will work in his sides favour. Were under no illusions about how hard it could be but being an underdog takes a lot of pressure off us, said Cook.

Falcao scores double as Monaco hit six

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Radamel Falcao continued his return to prominence on Saturday with a brace as Monaco kept up their superb form by thumping Nancy 6-0 at the Stade Louis II.Falcaos goals, the second of which came from the penalty spot, were followed by a Kylian Mbappe strike moments after his second-half introduction.Guido Carrillo added two late goals either side of a Fabinho penalty as the principality club moved clear in second place in Ligue 1, three points behind leaders and local rivals Nice. The win also underlined Monacos status as the most prolific side in Europes big five leagues -- they are averaging three goals a game after 12 matches and have scored at least six goals on three separate occasions since the start of October. We are doing better this year, providing a spectacle, said coach Leonardo Jardim. We are also pleased to have the best attack in Europe ahead of Barcelona with Messi, Suarez and Neymar. It was all too much for Nancy, who are on the brink of being bought out by a Chinese consortium but also languish in the relegation zone.Falcao had scored twice in Monacos 3-0 Champions League win at home to CSKA Moscow in midweek and was back among the goals in the 25th minute, nodding in from inside the six-yard box after Michael Chretien had turned the ball against his own bar.He netted a penalty five minutes later after Fabinho had gone down in the box under a Dialo Guidileye foul, and the Colombian now has eight goals in 10 appearances altogether this season. He even had the ball in the net again just before half-time, but this time his effort was ruled out for an offside against Valere Germain.Jardims side are anything but dependent on Falcao, however, as their second-half display showed.Seventeen-year-old starlet Mbappe replaced Germain just after the hour and required only two minutes to add his name to the scoresheet, rolling in the loose ball after goalkeeper Guy Roland Ndy Assembe had turned out a Benjamin Mendy cross.Falcao then made way for the Argentine forward Carrillo, who got number four three minutes from time, heading in a cross from the left by the marauding Mendy. The hosts got number five when Brazil international Fabinho tucked away another penalty following a Clement Lenglet foul on Corentin Jean. But they were not done there, making it 6-0 in stoppage time as the exciting Mbappe set up Carrillo for his second of the day.Falcao is one of 13 different players to have scored for Monaco in the league this season but Jardim will be crossing his fingers that the former Atletico Madrid man returns unscathed from international duty next week.I hope that everything goes well for him and he returns to Monaco ok, said the coach.Unfortunately for Monaco, their performance was played out in front of a desperately sparse crowd in the principality, but they are a real threat to leaders Nice who put their unbeaten league record on the line when they visit Caen on Sunday.Champions Paris Saint-Germain, six points adrift of Nice in third, host Rennes on Sunday.Fourth-placed Guingamp came from behind to draw 3-3 at Dijon with Belgian substitute Nill De Pauw equalising in stoppage time.Toulouse were held to a 1-1 draw at Nantes while Lyon needed an Alexandre Lacazette penalty -- his 10th goal of the season -- and a Pierre Bengtsson own goal to beat nine-man Bastia 2-1.A superb acrobatic effort by Uruguay striker Diego Rolan gave Bordeaux a 2-1 win at home to managerless bottom club Lorient and Lille continue to loiter just above the relegation zone after losing 1-0 at Angers. On Friday Marseille were beaten 3-1 at Montpellier, leaving new coach Rudi Garcia still without a win after three league games in charge.

Kvitova to face Svitolina in the Zhuhai final

Posted:

BEIJING (AFP) - Number three seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic swept past Chinas number one Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-2 to book a place in the finals at the $2.2 million WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai Saturday.Overcoming a partial home crowd in the seaside southern Chinese city, Kvitova dominated the Chinese wildcard in an impressive display, breezing to an early 5-1 lead shortly after the beginning of play and cruising to victory in 66 minutes.Kvitova has shown excellent form in recent months and secured her third finals clash in her last four appearances.Twenty-seven-year-old Zhang, ranked 28th in the world, had bounced back from retirement rumours after a disappointing tour last year to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open earlier this year.In the final round Kvitova will face fourth seed Elina Svitolina, who knocked out top seed Johanna Konta 2-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Chelsea go on top of the table after thrashing Everton 5-0

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Chelsea went top of the Premier League after a brilliant 5-0 win over Everton on Saturday gave them the biggest victory of Antonio Contes managerial tenure so far.Eden Hazard put in his best performance of the new era, scoring twice in an exceptional individual performance, with Marcos Alonso, Diego Costa and Pedro Rodriguez also on target.Everton, sixth in the table, never looked capable of coping with Chelsea and collapsed under the weight of the home sides repeated attacks.Chelsea currently look a world away from the problems of last season and this was the fourth awkward-looking game in a row in which they have made things look all too easy.It helped greatly that they claimed an early lead for the fourth successive game, too, even if this performance was slightly more sluggish than the previous three in that respect.Against Leicester City, it took seven minutes for them to score; against Manchester United, it was one; against Southampton it was six, and here it was 19.Hazard struck in a manner that has become increasingly familiar since the start of the season, cutting in from the left wing and hitting a low, bouncing shot that caught goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg unsighted. There was a possibility that Pedro was offside, but the goal was allowed to stand.Chelsea wasted no time extending their advantage, with just 24 seconds of playing time elapsing between their first and second goals.Conte halted an Everton counter-attack in its tracks and after brilliantly wriggling between two players, Hazard played the ball through to Pedro on the right. The winger looked to square the ball to Costa, but with the pass arriving slightly behind the striker, the oncoming Alonso roared at him to get out of the way and thundered a shot between Stekelenburgs legs.It was the Spanish wing-backs first Chelsea goal following his close-season switch from Fiorentina.Everton manager Ronald Koemans attempt to mirror Contes new three-man defence had clearly failed and it took him just 36 minutes to abandon it.Bryan Oviedo was hauled off for Kevin Mirallas, although it did not actually help. Chelsea continued their onslaught.Victor Moses smashed the post with a brilliantly hit shot on the half-volley, before Costa made it 3-0. Nemanja Matic flicked on Hazards corner on 43 minutes and the striker slammed home at the back post. The best was still to come, however, as Chelseas best player moved onto another level. On 56 minutes, Hazard surged forward down the right touchline and flicked the ball to Pedro, who sent it back to him with a wonderfully deft back-heel.The Belgian homed in on goal, before accurately driving the ball past Stekelenburg with his left foot.It was his seventh goal in 11 league games, marking his best start to a season since moving to Stamford Bridge from Lille in 2012.Chelsea then went on to complete their best result of the season so far as Pedro got the goal his performance deserved by volleying in from close range after Stekelenburg had thwarted Hazard. It marked an impressive escalation in results, with Chelsea having won their last three home games 3-0, 4-0 and now 5-0.Conte brought on John Terry at the end and it was a measure of the hosts dominance -- and Evertons haplessness -- that even the veteran centre-back was able to join in with their attacks.

Andy Murray becomes World No 1 after Raonic withdraws

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Britains Andy Murray became the new world number one on Saturday after Milos Raonic withdrew from their Paris Masters semi-final because of injury. The walkover will see Murray, 29, move to the top of the rankings for the first time in his career after replacing long-time incumbent Novak Djokovic. The Scots climb to the ATP rankings summit caps a remarkable year which has seen him win a second Wimbledon crown and mount a successful defence of his Olympic title in Rio.I think thats the most satisfying thing, really. Its been such a difficult thing to do during my career because of how good the guys around me have been, the guys ahead of me, said Murray.Obviously its unfortunate the way that it happened today. I would have liked to have done it on the court, but its been many years of work to get here.I never thought Id be No. 1 in the world and never imagined that was something that was going to happen.Murray had needed to reach the final to supplant Djokovic at the top following the Serbs defeat to Marin Cilic in the last eight. But he didnt need to hit a single ball as Raonic announced his withdrawal in a hastily-arranged press conference just an hour before the scheduled 1530 GMT start. The Canadian said he had suffered a muscle tear in his right leg in his previous match, sending Murray through to face John Isner in Sundays final. This morning I had trouble waking up and getting out of bed, said Raonic, who hurt himself in Fridays quarter-final win over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.I had some tests and an MRI half an hour ago and they found that I have a tear, Grade 1 tear in the right quad.Murray will be confirmed as the new number one -- the 26th different player in history to hold top spot -- when the latest rankings are released on Monday. He is the oldest first-time number one since 30-year-old John Newcombe of Australia in June 1974.Djokovic, whose 122-week reign at the top is set to come to an end, praised Murrays remarkable rise which coincided with a tumultuous second half of the year for the Serb.Hes definitely a player who deserves that. Undoubtedly much respect for what he has done, said Djokovic. To see how he has raised his level in the last 12 months is quite extraordinary.Murray will meet Isner as he targets a maiden Paris Masters title after the big-serving American toppled Cilic 6-4, 6-3 in the first semi-final.Isner, who also reached the last four in 2011, broke the ninth seed at 4-all before serving out for the first set.Cilic sealed his place at the Tour Finals in London this week and then snapped a 14-match losing run against Djokovic, but the Croat couldnt maintain that level against Isner. The American seized control again at 3-3 in the second set and inflicted his first defeat on Cilic in seven attempts with another break of serve.Isner will bid for his first Masters 1000 title after reaching the final at Indian Wells in 2012 and Cincinnati in 2013.Its going to be a huge challenge for me, said Isner. Andy, of course, is one of the all-time greats in my opinion.I have never beaten him before. Hes had my number. But also I had never beaten Cilic before coming into this match. If I want to have any chance, I have to play extremely well.Meanwhile, Raonics injury throws his participation at the prestigious November 13-20 Tour Finals into doubt, although he refused to rule out taking part just yet.I still have the possibility of making it, but I was told five to ten days. So Im on the borderline for that, he said.

Turkey recall Barca's Turan after Terim left

Posted:

ISTANBUL: (AFP) - Turkeys star midfielder Arda Turan of Barcelona was on Saturday recalled to the national side for the World Cup qualifier against Kosovo after apparently healing a rift with coach Fatih Terim.Turan was included in the squad for the home game against Kosovo on Saturday in Antalya, winning a recall along with fellow veteran players Burak Yilmaz of Beijing Guoan and Selcuk Inan of Galatasaray.Promising Danish-born winger Emre Mor of Borussia Dortmund, 19, is absent owing to suspension but another young foreign-based player, Bilal Basacikoglu of Feyenoord, 21, was given his first call-up, according to the squad released by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF).Turan, Turkeys one world-class player of the last years, had last month been sensationally dropped from the side for qualifiers against Ukraine and Iceland.Turkey, captained by Turan, were knocked out of Euro 2016 in France in the group stages, with the teams insipid performance and conduct leaving fans at home deeply unimpressed.Turkish press reports had suggested that a damaging rift with Terim had developed over conditions, amid speculation that the presidential administration of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was trying to intercede to solve the crisis. As he squad was announced, Turan took to his popular Instagram account to indicate that the problems were solved.I spoke to our coach (Terim) and God willing will once again be together with our country, he wrote. With two draws, a loss and no wins so far in Group I, Turkey will be hoping for a big victory against the international newcomers Kosovo to boost their chances of making the 2018 finals in Russia.Turkeys best known sportsman, the popularity of Turan transcends football and the player strongly supported Erdogan in the wake of the failed July 15 coup.

Delhi state smog draws 'gas chamber' comparison

Posted:

NEW DELHI: (AFP) - Delhi state was compared to a gas chamber Saturday by its chief minister, as 1,800 schools were shut following one of the citys worst-ever pollution spells.Thick smog has blanketed the capital for days, with local and central authorities meeting to resolve the crisis. The pollution has gone up so much in the last 15-20 days that it is like a gas chamber outside, Delhi state chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said.He said fireworks during the recent Diwali Hindu festival only marginally added to the pollution levels, which are fuelled by vehicles and trash burning. He said it was not possible to keep the schools closed for longer than a day.The primary reason for the current spell is crop burning in our neighbouring states, Kejriwal added.Indias environment minister Anil Madhav Dave is expected to meet the heads of Delhis neighbouring states next week.Exchanged views on taking emergency measures to curb pollution. Advised Delhi govt to implement all possible measures to improve situation, Dave said on Twitter.New Delhis air quality has steadily worsened over the years, a result of rapid urbanisation that brings pollution from diesel engines, coal-fired power plants and industrial emissions. It also suffers from atmospheric dust, the burning of crop stubble in farms around the city and pollution from open fires lit by the urban poor to keep warm in winter or to cook food. The reading for pollutants in the atmosphere breached the 1,000 microgram mark for the first time in one neighbourhood in south Delhi -- 10 times the World Health Organisations recommended level -- earlier this week.A new study by UNICEF says some 300 million children live with outdoor air so polluted it can cause serious physical damage, with the situation most acute in South Asia.

Kurds march against Erdogan in Germany, France

Posted:

FRANKFURT: (AFP) - Several thousand Kurds marched in the western Germany city of Cologne on Saturday in support of pro-Kurdish politicians jailed in Turkey the previous day.The demonstrators -- numbering 6,500 according to Cologne police and up to 15,000 according to the protests organisers -- carried flags and banners promoting the Peoples Democratic Party (HDP).On Friday, the HDPs two leaders, Selahattin Demirtas and Figen Yuksekdag, and several of the partys legislators, were remanded in custody by a court in the southeastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir. The United States and European Union have both raised alarm over the arrests, in a crackdown since the countrys July 15 coup attempt.Police in Cologne said Saturdays march took place without incident.Numbering around a million, the Kurdish community in Germany is the largest in Europe. The country is also home to the worlds largest community of people of Turkish origin. In late July, some 40,000 people marched in Cologne in support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.Elsewhere, more than 2,000 Kurds staged a demonstration in Paris carrying placards with slogans such as Turkey bombs, Europe stays silent.
