Conte hails Diego Costa as one of the best strikers in the world

Posted:

MIDDLESBROUGH, United Kingdom (AFP) - Antonio Conte hailed a newly-focused Diego Costa as one of the best strikers in the world after the Spaniards match-winning strike at Middlesbrough fired Chelsea to the top of the Premier League table.Costa scored the only goal of the game at the Riverside, pouncing after a first-half corner rebounded inside the six-yard box, and now tops the Premier League goalscoring charts with 10 goals from 12 games.Perhaps just as significantly, he has not been booked since the middle of September, and whereas post-match discussions would once focus on a perceived lack of discipline and a penchant for arguing with officials, it is now Costas football that is doing the talking.Diego is always important, not only for today, said Conte. He is our point of reference in attacking. He is impressive in the way he is finding his goals, and it is important to continue this way because we need his goals. Is he focused just on his football? It is important to have this question. In the past, people have been asking me about his behaviour and his reactions, but now as a striker, I think he is one of the best in the world. He has to continue this way, and he is showing his patience in the right way and is focused on helping the team, with and without the ball. With Liverpool having failed to beat Southampton on Saturday, Chelseas victory took them to the top of the table for the first time under Contes management.Having won their last six games without conceding a goal, they are one point clear of both Liverpool and Manchester City, although Conte feels it is far too early to be talking about their title-winning credentials.I think that now it is difficult to reply to this, he said. Only a month and a half ago, you saw Chelsea conceded two defeats to Liverpool and Arsenal. After this, Chelsea were not a favourite or a team who could fight for the title until the end. Now, it is difficult to change that opinion completely. We are working well, but if you ask what is our target, I want to wait until the end of the first part of the championship. Its hard to say if were the best side in the country right now, but Im pleased with the players because they know our fans demand that we must fight until the end. Im seeing with my own eyes that we have special players.Things are about to get more difficult for the league leaders, with next weekends home game with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur preceding a trip to Manchester City. Were ready to play many games in a few days because from the start of the season, weve worked not only on the tactical aspect but also the physical aspect, said Conte. You need the strength to run from the start to the end with good technique and talent. If you link the two, its important. Our trust in what were doing and how we are working is increasing, and now its important to focus on the next game, a massive one against Tottenham.Having claimed recent draws against Arsenal and City, Middlesbrough produced another spirited display against one of the title contenders. However, for all their improved form, Aitor Karankas side are just one point clear of the relegation zone.Playing against a team like Chelsea, we knew it would be tough, said the Boro head coach. One mistake punished us, but we have shown we can compete against the best teams in the league. You cant be pleased to lose one game, but I am pleased with the attitude of the players.

Nice to go top of the table in French league

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Nice coped without the suspended Mario Balotelli to win 1-0 at Saint-Etienne on Sunday and go clear at the top of Ligue 1 once again.Valentin Eysseric scored the only goal of the game in the second half at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard as Nice bounced back from a 1-0 defeat at Caen in their last outing before the international break. It was the perfect response from Lucien Favres side in a difficult fixture after their closest rivals, Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, won earlier over the weekend to crank up the pressure on the surprise leaders.Overall we deserved the win, said Favre, although he also accepted that his team did not scale the heights that have seen them take French football by storm this season. We suffered. We lost the ball in dangerous areas and Saint-Etienne could have scored, so it could have been costly. We could have gone 2-0 up but lets not forget that at 0-0, (Nolan) Roux missed a great chance with a header. It would have been very difficult for us to come from behind against such a well-organised team.Balotelli has scored six goals in six league appearances since moving to France but served a one-game ban here, so there was more of an onus on seven-goal leading marksman Alassane Plea.He had little impact in a game of few chances but Nice almost went in front when Ricardo Pereira cut the ball back from the right for Jean Michael Seri, whose shot was turned over by Stephane Ruffier in the Saint-Etienne goal. The hosts responded just after the half-hour mark and the unmarked Roux met a cross by Henri Saivet with his head six yards from goal, only for Yoan Cardinale to save.Eysseric, who spent last season on loan at Saint-Etienne, then got the breakthrough just after the hour mark.He got the break of the ball off Loic Perrin on the edge of the box and sent a rising half-volley into the net to silence the home fans.Nice then held on to move three points clear once again having seen Monaco win 3-0 at Lorient on Friday before defending champions PSG laboured to a 2-0 victory over Nantes on Saturday.Elsewhere on Sunday, Marseille claimed their first league win under new coach Rudi Garcia at the fourth attempt as a late header from centre-back Rolando secured a 1-0 victory against Caen at the Stade Velodrome.Marseille remain in the bottom half but are just five points behind fifth-placed Guingamp, who drew 1-1 at home to Bordeaux earlier in the day.

Obama wants Ukraine deal 'before term is up'

Posted:

LIMA (AFP) - US President Barack Obama said he told Vladimir Putin on Sunday that he wants to reach a settlement that solves the Ukraine crisis before he leaves office in January.I talked to him about Ukraine and the need for us to get things done, Obama told a press conference in Peru, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.I urged him to instruct his negotiators to work with ourselves, with France, with Germany, with Ukraine to see if we can get that done before my term is up.Russia backs a separatist, pro-Moscow insurgency in eastern Ukraine that has claimed nearly 10,000 lives.Moscow, which annexed Crimea from pro-Western Ukraine in 2014, denies either sending troops or weapons across its border to fuel the conflict, despite eyewitness testimony to the contrary.German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande launched efforts in October to revive a stalled peace process during talks with Putin and Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko in Berlin. Those involved are trying to draw up a roadmap for applying the frayed 2015 Minsk peace accords following months of impasse. The shock election victory of Donald Trump in the United States has been met with trepidation in Kiev because of the moguls praise for Putin.

UN envoy in Damascus as regime pounds rebel-held Aleppo

Posted:

ALEPPO (AFP) - Syrias regime on Sunday pursued a relentless assault of rebel-held east Aleppo that has killed more than 100 civilians in recent days, as the UNs peace envoy arrived in Damascus for talks.Air strikes, artillery fire and barrel bomb attacks continued through the night and into Sunday morning as the army pressed a new offensive that has been condemned by Washington and the United Nations. An AFP journalist in eastern Aleppo said streets were deserted, with only ambulances and rescue workers moving through battered neighbourhoods.Damascus launched the renewed assault on east Aleppo on Tuesday in a bid to seize full control of the divided city, a key battleground in Syrias five-year civil war.The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor of the war, said early on Sunday that 54 people had been killed in the previous 24 hours, most of them civilians. That brought to 103 the number of civilians killed, including 17 children, since the regime renewed its bombardment of Aleppo, it said. The Observatory also reported heavy fighting between regime forces and rebels as the army sought to gain ground in the Bustan al-Basha and Sheikh Saeed neighbourhoods of the rebel-controlled east.More than 300,000 people have been killed in Syria since the conflict began with anti-government protests in March 2011. Successive international attempts to find a peaceful resolution to the war have failed.Staffan de Mistura, the UNs peace envoy for Syria, arrived in Damascus on Sunday for talks with Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem that were likely to address the latest violence.International concern has grown over the renewed assault, which has forced the closure of hospitals and schools, destroyed rescue worker facilities, and left residents cowering in their homes. On Saturday, Washington slammed what it described as a heinous operation.US National Security Advisor Susan Rice said Washington condemned in the strongest terms these horrific attacks against medical infrastructure and humanitarian aid workers. The Syrian regime and its allies, Russia in particular, bears responsibility for the immediate and long-term consequences these actions have caused in Syria and beyond.Moscow began a military intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assads government last year.It says it is not involved in the current assault on Aleppo, concentrating its firepower on opposition and jihadist forces in neighbouring Idlib province instead. But Damascus and its allies have made clear they want rebels expelled from eastern Aleppo, which fell from regime control in mid-2012.More than 250,000 people remain in the east of the city, which has been sealed off since government forces surrounded it in mid-July.On Saturday, UN officials said they were extremely saddened and appalled by the recent escalation in fighting in several parts of Syria.Humanitarian coordinator for Syria Ali al-Zaatari and regional humanitarian coordinator Kevin Kennedy also said they had shared a plan to deliver aid to east Aleppo and evacuate the sick and wounded. It is imperative all parties agree to the plan and allow us to secure immediate, safe and unimpeded access to provide relief to those most in need, they said in a joint statement.Once Syrias economic powerhouse, Aleppo has been ravaged by the war.No aid has entered east Aleppo since July, and the government siege has led to food and fuel shortages, while sustained bombardment has forced schools and hospitals to close. In mid-October, Russia said it was halting its strikes on Aleppo, and organised a series of brief ceasefires intended to encourage civilians and surrendering rebels to evacuate the east. But few did so, and the UN said the short windows were insufficient for it to secure security guarantees for aid deliveries or evacuations. The renewed bombing has particularly affected medical and rescue facilities in the east, with shelling on Friday destroying one of the last hospitals in rebel-held Aleppo.Staff were also forced to evacuate the easts only childrens hospital because of repeated attacks, removing babies from incubators.Among those killed in the overnight bombing Sunday were a couple and their four children who died in a barrel bomb attack in the Sakhur neighbourhood, the Observatory said. Activists circulated footage they said showed the children, in which the four siblings lay lifeless on a stone floor, among them a little girl with her hair in pigtails wearing a blue jumper with a cartoon animal on it.

Obama presses Putin on Syria as Aleppo pummelled

Posted:

LIMA (AFP) - US President Barack Obama on Sunday urged greater efforts to end violence in war-torn Syria in brief talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as concern mounts over a ferocious regime bombing campaign in rebel-held parts of Aleppo.Obama made the comments to his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Peru, in what could be their last meeting before the US president leaves office in January. It was the first time they had met since the US presidential election and the shock victory of Donald Trump, who has pursued a far warmer relationship with Putin than Obama did.On Syria, the president noted the need for Secretary (John) Kerry and Foreign Minister (Sergei) Lavrov to continue pursuing initiatives, together with the broader international community, to diminish the violence and alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people, said a White House official.Syrian government forces last Tuesday launched a bid to retake the eastern rebel-held side of Aleppo using air strikes, barrel bombs and artillery.Moscow, which began a military intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assads government last year, says it is not involved in the current assault on Aleppo, instead concentrating its firepower on a neighboring province.Around 250,000 people have been under siege in the eastern part of Aleppo, Syrias second city and its economic hub before the war erupted in March 2011.Obamas comments came shortly after the UNs Syria envoy, Staffan de Mistura, warned that time was running out for eastern areas of the city, after talks in Damascus with Foreign Minister Walid Muallem.Dozens of people have been killed in the onslaught, most of them civilians, a monitor has said, and many have been wounded. In the four-minute conversation with Putin, Obama also urged Russia to uphold commitments related to the frayed Minsk peace accords which were aimed at ending conflict in eastern Ukraine. The president urged President Putin to uphold Russias commitments under the Minsk agreements, underscoring the US and our partners commitment to Ukraines sovereignty, said the White House official.Relations between Russia and the United States are at their lowest point since the Cold War, largely because of sharp differences over the conflicts in Syria and Ukraine.Obama, who last met Putin at the G20 summit in China in September, is on his final foreign trip as president before handing over to Donald Trump on January 20.Trump has expressed admiration for Putin, calling him a better leader than Obama and saying he would have a very, very good relationship with him.Putin likewise complimented the Republican billionaire, calling him a very bright, talented person.During the campaign, US intelligence accused Russia of directing hacks to influence the election after sensitive emails from the Democratic party and Hillary Clintons campaign were leaked.

Kerry welcomes Yemen ceasefire as possible step to peace

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday welcomed the announcement by all parties in Yemen of a ceasefire which he said could help create the conditions for advancing the peace talks. The 48-hour ceasefire began on Saturday following an intervention by Kerry, who had met with Huthi rebel representatives in Oman and urged President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadis government to sign up.On Sunday, sporadic fighting shook parts of Yemen as the Saudi-led coalition battling the rebels, who are backed by Iran, warned that the fragile ceasefire would not be extended unless violations ended. An AFP correspondent in Sanaa said there had been no coalition air strikes in the rebel-held capital since the truce took effect.A military official said there were limited exchanges of fire in the flashpoint southwestern city of Taez, where heavy fighting in recent days has left dozens dead.Aid agencies have pleaded for unhindered humanitarian access in Yemen to allow the delivery of life-saving supplies to civilians reeling from a conflict that has left thousands dead.Kerry, in his statement Sunday, said that the United States continued to support the efforts of UN Special Envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to restart, by months end, negotiations toward a comprehensive agreement. We are mindful that reaching a durable and lasting settlement to this conflict requires compromise and concessions, Kerry said, and we encourage all parties to seek that compromise.

Merkel to seek fourth term to defend threatened 'values'

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Sunday she would seek a fourth term in elections next year to defend democratic principles in the face of looming threats at home and abroad.Predicting her toughest campaign to date, Merkel said the forces of populism as well as the uncertainty created by poll triumphs for Brexit and Donald Trump meant she had a duty to serve my country. We are facing struggles in Europe and internationally for our values and our interests and, simply put, for our way of life, Merkel, 62, told reporters at the headquarters of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party. This election will be more difficult than any before it, at least not since national reunification in 1990, she added, citing a strong polarisation of our society. Merkel, the EUs longest serving leader, said she had endlessly weighed her choice and knew that in distinctly difficult, even insecure times, many leaders were looking to her as a source of stability.I am indeed honoured but I also find it grotesque and even absurd that some commentators have suggested she should be considered the new leader of the free world, she said.Speaking to German television channel ARD, she vowed to seek a strong Europe after Britain voted to leave the bloc.Merkel ended months of feverish speculation earlier by telling CDU leaders that she would stand again, a decision they welcomed with thunderous applause, party sources told AFP.She has governed Europes top economic power, which does not have term limits, since 2005.Another full four-year mandate, which pollsters say she is likely to win, would tie the post-war record set by her mentor Helmut Kohl, who presided over the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall. Merkel is the first woman, the youngest person and the only candidate who grew up in communist East Germany to lead the reunited country. A pastors daughter and trained physicist, Merkel is popular among Germans who see her as a straight-shooter and a safe pair of hands in a crisis. However her decision to let in more than one million asylum seekers over the last two years dented her support. It also revived the fortunes of the rightwing populist Alternative for Germany party (AfD), which has harnessed widespread anxiety about migration.Nevertheless, observers said the recent seismic shifts in global politics were likely to drive traditionally risk-averse German voters back into her arms.Merkel is the answer to the populism of our time, said Saxony state premier Stanislaw Tillich of the CDU, welcoming her candidacy. She is basically the anti-Trump, he told the newspaper group Redaktionsnetzwerk.More than half of the electorate -- 55 percent -- want Merkel to stay in office, up from 42 percent in August, a poll for Bild am Sonntag newspaper showed. While the globe braces for potentially radical changes in US leadership under Trump, Britain is wrestling with the fallout from the Brexit vote, and France is facing a presidential poll in May that could see far-right candidate Marine Le Pen snatch victory.Underlining her relative strength, Merkel gathered outgoing US President Barack Obama and the leaders of Britain, France, Spain and Italy at her chancellery Friday for talks on the fight against terrorism, climate change and the strategic threat posed by Russia. Obama praised Merkel as an outstanding partner, adding that if I were German and I had a vote, I might support her.Misgivings about Merkels refugee policy were blamed for a string of CDU state election defeats, and sparked an open revolt by its Bavarian sister party, the CSU, which demanded a strict upper limit on incoming asylum seekers. A survey Sunday showed that 33 percent of German voters backed Merkels conservatives, down nine points from the last national election in 2013.The centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), junior partners in Merkels grand coalition, were a distant second with 24 percent. The AfD and the opposition Greens were neck-and-neck with 13 percent and 12 percent respectively, according to independent opinion research institute Emnid. It is still unclear who will carry the SPDs banner into the race, with party leader Sigmar Gabriel potentially facing a challenge from European Parliament President Martin Schulz.News website Spiegel Online said the CDU would have to motivate and mobilise supporters who might be suffering from Merkel fatigue.Even though there is no Trump in sight in Germany, the US showed that the unimaginable can become real, it said.

Sarkozy knocked out of French presidential race

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Former president Nicolas Sarkozy crashed out of the French presidential election on Sunday, suffering a humiliating defeat in the first round of the rightwing primary.Sarkozy was beaten into third place after a stunning upset by Francois Fillon, who served as his prime minister, with the veteran Alain Juppe placing second. The surprise result puts Fillon in a commanding position for next Sundays second round of a contest that is widely expected to decide Frances next leader. The winner is tipped to face -- and beat -- far-right leader Marine Le Pen in the decisive presidential run-off next May.In a major upset, Fillon, a pro-business conservative, took more than 44 percent of the vote to around 28 percent for former prime minister and foreign minister Juppe and just under 21 percent for Sarkozy, according to nearly complete results.I fought for my beliefs with passion... I did not manage to convince the voters, a dignified Sarkozy told his supporters, and threw his support behind Fillon.I have great respect for Alain Juppe, but Francois Fillons political choices are closer to mine, Sarkozy said, adding he would now withdraw from political life.Fillon, 62, pulled off a remarkable come-from-behind victory in the first round after trailing Sarkozy and Juppe in all but the final days of the two-month campaign.Voters appear to have chosen Fillons more understated style over the brashness of 61-year-old Sarkozy, who still deeply divides the country four years after being turfed out of office by the Socialist Francois Hollande. With Frances ruling left bitterly divided, the campaign has been heavily influenced by the populist forces behind Britains vote to leave the European Union and Donald Trumps shock victory in the US election.Juppe, 71, was the early frontrunner but Fillon made stunning progress thanks largely to strong performances in three televised debates.Fillon told his ecstatic camp that his programme was one of hope. He said he had a special thought for Sarkozy, whom he served as prime minister from 2007 to 2012.It appears that the participation of leftwing voters in the first ever rightwing primary to be held in France could have been a significant factor in dragging down Sarkozy.Anyone who paid two euros ($2.1) and signed a declaration of adherence to the values of the centre and the right could take part. Many leftwing voters are thought to have voted against Sarkozy.Turnout was high with around four million people casting ballots, according to a preliminary count. One Socialist voter, a sports teacher in his 50s who identified himself only as Eric, told AFP he had taken part to vote against Sarkozy.Im fed up of that guy, he thinks he is all-powerful and he has been involved in too many scandals. Juppe, despite everything else, is the opposite, he said as he cast his vote in the Paris suburb of Pantin. In a final TV debate among the seven candidates on Thursday, Sarkozy angrily ducked a question about fresh claims that he received millions in funding from the late Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi towards his 2007 campaign. The case is one of several investigations to dog Sarkozy since he left office after what was dubbed a bling-bling presidency because of his flashy lifestyle.Juppe and Fillon have broadly similar programmes, underpinned by pledges to reinforce domestic security in a country still under a state of emergency following jihadist attacks that killed more than 230 people. They also share a desire to reinforce European borders and reduce immigration, while tax cuts also loom large.Ultimately, the choice came down to style.Sarkozy emphasised his tough-guy credentials, saying it made him a better choice than the mild-mannered Juppe to safeguard Frances position in an uncertain world following Trumps election.Fillon has promised to slash 600,000 jobs from Frances bloated civil service. The nomination of the right-wing candidate on November 27 is expected to trigger an announcement from Hollande on whether he intends to bid for re-election despite the lowest popularity ratings of any post-war president.

Hundreds protest as swastikas and 'Go Trump' appear in NY park

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - At least 300 people, including Beastie Boys singer Adam Horovitz, protested in New York on Sunday against what they said were hate crimes inspired by the election of Donald Trump, after swastikas appeared in a Brooklyn park. The park bears the name of Adam Yauch, a bassist and singer with the Beastie Boys who campaigned for human rights. The popular group broke up in 2012 following his death of cancer. Yauch had played in the park as a child. Some time before Friday morning, vandals used spray paint to draw awkwardly formed swastikas and the words Go Trump on a childrens playground train. City workers quickly painted over the graffiti, and by Sunday the defaced areas had been covered with flowers, hearts, messages of love and Tibetan flags, in tribute to Yauch, who was a Buddhist. The defacement -- of a sort seen in many parts of the country since Trumps election, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which monitors extremism -- sparked widespread outrage on social media. Brad Lander, a New York City councilman, criticized Trump in a Tweet, saying that the president-elect took time to condemn the thoughtful plea of the @HamiltonMusical cast. But not the swastikas in his name in a Brooklyn playground. Trump criticized the Hamilton cast on Twitter after a lead actor had urged Vice President-elect Mike Pence, who attended a performance Friday, to ensure that the incoming administration respect racial, cultural and social diversity. The Grammy-winning Beastie Boys, formed in the 1980s in Brooklyn, were one of the great successes of the hip-hop genre. The surviving Beastie Boys -- Horovitz and Mike Diamond -- tweeted on Saturday: Hate has no place in Brooklyn, NYC or America. Join us on Sunday to stand against hate messages.Horovitz was joined by elected officials including New York state senator Daniel Squadron, a Democrat, as well as leaders of several religious communities. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, have said they will not tolerate hate crimes or expressions of racism, and they announced a series of measures to protect anyone targeted, whether Muslim, Jew, immigrant or member of a sexual minority. Thus, Cuomo announced Sunday that he was creating a special state-police unit to deal with such crimes.Having set up a special help line to take calls from potential victims, Cuomo also announced the creation of a fund to help immigrants in need of legal protection.
