New Zealand beat Pakistan by 8 wickets in first test

Posted:

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, Nov 20, 2016 (AFP) - A Kane Williamson half century saw New Zealand snap a four-Test losing streak when they beat Pakistan by eight wickets Sunday in the first Test at Hagley Oval, Christchurch.A low-scoring match was wrapped up inside eight sessions after the first days washout, with Williamsons second innings 61 -- his 24th Test 50 -- the top score of the match.Set 105 to win after Pakistan were all out for 171 in their second innings on the morning of the fourth day, Williamson lost his wicket with the scores level, leaving debutant Jeet Raval to seal victory with a boundary off Yasir Shah.It was a much-needed confidence boost for the home side, coming off a 3-0 series whitewash in India and a comprehensive 204-run loss to South Africa.New Zealands debutants shone. Opener Raval was unbeaten on 36 in the second innings after top-scoring in the first innings with 55 while Colin de Grandhomme gave a masterful display of medium-paced bowling, taking 6 for 41 in the first innings when Pakistan were skittled for 133.After New Zealand replied with 200, Pakistan resumed their second innings on Sunday at 129-7 and added a further 42 to be all out for 171.Sohail Khan posted a Test-best 40 as he and Asad Shafiq (17) showed gritty resistance at the start of the day.But their 53-run stand for the eighth wicket came to an end when Sohail half-heartedly pulled a short-pitched Southee delivery to de Grandhomme at backward square.Neil Wagner, who returned figures of 3 for 34, claimed the wicket of Shafiq and Southee closed the innings when he had Rahat Ali caught for two.Southee finished with 3 for 53 and Trent Boult, who leaked 19 runs in two overs on Sunday, took 3 for 37.Pakistan removed opener Tom Latham early in New Zealands saunter to the finish when he fended at a sharply rising Mohammad Amir delivery and was caught by Shafiq in the gully for nine.It ended a disappointing Test for Latham who fell lbw to Amir in the first innings for one.Williamson and Raval were largely untroubled through to the end of the innings until New Zealand reached 104 to level the scores and Williamson swept Azhar Ali straight to Sami Aslam at fine leg.The second and final Test in the series starts in Hamilton on Friday with New Zealand searching for their first series win over Pakistan in 31 years.

Pakistan out for 171, New Zealand to chase 105 to win

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AFP) - Pakistan were all out for 171 on the fourth morning of the first Test, setting New Zealand a 105-run target for victory at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Sunday.Only Sohail Khan (40) and Asad Shafiq (17) provided any resistance at the tail with a 53-run stand for the eighth wicket. For New Zealand, Neil Wagner finished with three for 34, Trent Boult three for 37 and Tim Southee took three for 53.

Ronaldo hat-trick downs Atletico, extends Real lead

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldos hat-trick delivered Real Madrids first success over Atletico Madrid in La Liga for three years with a 3-0 win in the last meeting between the sides at Atleticos Vicente Calderon.Real now lead second-placed Barcelona by four points after the Catalans paid a heavy price for the absence of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in a 0-0 draw with nine-man Malaga earlier on Saturday.A third league defeat in four games leaves Atleticos title ambitions in tatters in their final season at the Calderon. Diego Simeones men are now nine points adrift of Real down in fifth.Ronaldo struck the decisive spot-kick as Real edged Atletico on penalties in the Champions League final in May and was the match winner once more, albeit with a slight hint of fortune. The Portugueses opener took a wicked deflection on its way past the excellent Jan Oblak.Ronaldo doubled Reals lead from the penalty spot 19 minutes from time before a brilliant Gareth Bale cross teed him up for the simplest of finishes to complete his hat-trick.Real were without six key players in captain Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Casemiro, Toni Kroos, Alvaro Morata and Karim Benzema, but impressively controlled the first 45 minutes.Only an incredible save by Oblak prevented Ronaldo opening the scoring with a towering header on 12 minutes that the Slovenian somehow clawed away low to his left.Oblak made another smart save to deny Luka Modric moments later, but he was helpless for the opener as Ronaldos free-kick was deflected behind him via the Atletico wall.It took Atletico until the start of the second period to get to grips with the European champions, but came out a different side after the break.Yannick Carrasco curled inches wide from the edge of the area before Antoine Griezmann blasted a shot across goal with no Atletico player waiting to knock to the ball into an unguarded net. However, any hopes of an Atletico fightback were punctured when Stefan Savic upended Ronaldo inside the area and the three-time World Player of the Year dispatched the resulting spot-kick.And with Atletico stretched at the back, a brilliant run and low cross from Bale on the counter-attack teed up Ronaldo to prod home at the far post.At the Camp Nou, Barca were held scoreless for the first time in La Liga since Malagas visit in 2014 without the ill Messi and suspended Suarez. They are two of our most decisive players. They make the difference in the most important part of the pitch, but that cant serve as an excuse, said Barcas captain for the day Sergio Busquets.Without his usual two strike partners, the focus was on Neymar to break down the mass ranks of Malaga defence. The Brazilian fired into the side-netting inside the first 10 minutes, but Barcas bright start quickly fizzled out.Indeed, Juan Carlos had the best chance of the game for Malaga just before the hour mark when he rounded Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen but fired into the side-netting with the goal gaping.Malaga had to see out of the final 21 minutes with 10 men when Real Madrid loanee Diego Llorente cynically chopped down Neymar and was shown a straight red card.Yet, even with a man advantage, Barca badly missed the creativity of Messi and injured captain Andres Iniesta as they resorted to launching cross balls into Gerard Pique, who moved forward from central defence to act as an emergency forward.Substitute Ivan Rakitic headed inches wide, whilst Pique also had a goal ruled out for offside after Andre Gomes had struck the bar. However, Barcas best chance came deep into stoppage time when Carlos Kameni somehow clawed Neymars header from point-blank range to safety before Carlos was also dismissed.Sevilla moved up to third as they produced a stunning fightback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Deportivo la Coruna.Ryan Babels first-minute opener and a wonderful individual effort from Florin Andone handed struggling Deportivo a 2-0 lead. However, Steven NZonzi, Vitolo and a 93rd minute winner from Gabriel Mercado kept Sevilla six points off the top.

Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to collide in London finale

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic will slug it out for the world number one ranking in a high-stakes final at the ATP Tour Finals after completing their contrasting paths to the dramatic showdown.Murray and Djokovics unprecedented clash for pole position will end with one of the old rivals finishing the year on top of the world after the Scot shattered his rivals 122-week reign at number one earlier this month.Fittingly, they will bring the curtain down on the ATP season with both the prestigious Tour Finals title and the top spot up for grabs in Sundays final at Londons O2 Arena. After staging a superb fightback to defeat Milos Raonic 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (11/9) in Saturdays first semi-final, Murray is just one win away from capping a dream year in perfect fashion. But Djokovic can say exactly the same after the defending champion thrashed Japans Kei Nishikori 6-1, 6-1 in the other semi.Djokovic, who has a 24-10 lead in his head to head with Murray, said: This is one of the biggest matches we will ever play against each other. The match everybody anticipated. This has never happened in the history of tennis. Im privileged to be part of history. My level had been going in the right direction. Now its coming up to the last match of the year. I hope we get a great final.Crucially, Murray might be on his last legs after having to survive a three-hour 39-minute epic against Raonic that ranked as the longest match in Tour Finals history -- eclipsing the record mark set when Murray beat Nishikori in three hours and 20 minutes on Wednesday. While Murrays body has been pushed to its limits this week, Djokovic has enjoyed smooth progress to the final and, unlike his opponent, the world number two will be well rested following his 67-minute demolition of Nishikori.Murray, bidding to win the Tour Finals for the first time in his maiden final appearance, acknowledged he is feeling the strain of his gruelling run.It was obviously unbelievably tough. I played some great points and managed to get the break at the end, Murray said. This is one of the hardest matches Ive played indoors. I didnt expect to play a long one with someone with a serve like Milos.Im tired. Ive played so much tennis over the last few months. Ill give it my best effort, the best of what I have.Raonic twice broke Murray when he served for the match in the final set and saved three match points in the decisive tie-break.But the Canadian fourth seed couldnt take the one match point that came his way in a thrilling denouement that eventually went Murrays way to repeat the outcome of their meetings in the Wimbledon and Queens finals on the other side of London earlier this year.Murrays 23rd successive victory set a new career-best for the 29-year-old, who has been in sublime form since becoming a father for the first time, but only a 24th would bring a fitting finale to the best year of his life.Djokovic has been in a prolonged slump since winning the French Open for the first time in June, sparking rumours about his private life and questions about his recent involvement with a spiritual guru. But the decline is all relative and the 29-year-old, who beat Murray in the Australian and French Open finals this year, has now won 22 of his last 23 matches at the Tour Finals, keeping him on course to win the tournament for a fifth successive year and record-equalling sixth time in total.Having played consecutive three-set matches, Nishikori was running on fumes before the match even began and his concentration wasnt helped when an intruder tried to run onto the court before the start of the second game of the first set.Djokovic took full advantage by breaking Nishikori in that game and again in the fourth to establish a vice-like grip that he had no intention of relinquishing. With the first set in the bag, Djokovic went for the kill and hounded Nishikori into dropping serve yet again in the first game of the second set. That was the knockout blow and the 12-time Grand Slam winner sprinted to the finish line as the out-classed Nishikori folded under Djokovics relentless barrage.

Zimbabwe salvage tie in thriller with West Indies

Posted:

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AFP) - Shai Hope hit his maiden one-day international century but the West Indies could only stutter to a dramatic tie in a triangular series clash with Zimbabwe in Bulawayo on Saturday. With Hope scoring 101 in just his second ODI the West Indies were well on track to overhaul the hosts 257 all out, until his dismissal sparked a late collapse. The tourists went into the final over needing just four runs to win off seamer Donald Tiripano, but lost three wickets -- two of them to run-outs -- to finish on 257 for eight. We should have won the game, but thats cricket, said West Indies captain Jason Holder. Its important for the guys to learn from this occasion. As a young team we just need to think a bit more when we get into these tight positions. The game was set up by two dominant partnerships for the third wicket, with Craig Ervine and Sikandar Raza Butt putting on 144 for Zimbabwe before Hope and Kraigg Brathwaites 162-run stand for the West Indies. With Ervine scoring 92 and Raza hitting 77, Zimbabwe went into the final 12 overs of their innings on 188 for two, with their eye on a winning total.Instead the innings unravelled with Razas dismissal, as the hosts lost eight for 69 in the remaining overs to be bowled out off the final ball of the innings.Carlos Brathwaite picked up the key wicket of Raza as well as two more late dismissals to finish with figures of four for 48.The West Indies looked in control throughout their chase, with Kraigg Brathwaite scoring 78 and Hope taking advantage of being dropped on 69 and 84, both times by Raza off the bowling of Graeme Cremer. The tourists reached the end of the 44th over on 217 for two, but when Hope was caught behind off the bowling of Chris Mpofu, Zimbabwe were able to squeeze the new batsmen on a two-paced pitch.Although Sean Williams picked up two wickets in his final over, the West Indies were still heavy favourites when Carlos Brathwaite hit the final ball of the penultimate over for six.But Tiripano held his nerve to have Brathwaite caught in the deep, then enjoyed some luck when he deflected Holders drive onto the stumps at the non-strikers end to run out Ashley Nurse.Holder only needed a single off the final delivery, but could not make contact and saw his partner Jonathan Carter run out as he tried to steal a bye.We made some mistakes and it could have gone our way, but credit to the guys for the way they fought and secured the tie, said Cremer. We were a bit sloppy in the field, we probably gave away 20 runs and dropped a couple of catches, but well take the positives from this game into the final two matches.Zimbabwe take on Sri Lanka at the same Queen Sports Club venue on Monday in the next game of the series.

India in driver's seat against England in Test match

Posted:

VISAKHAPATNAM, India (AFP) - Ravichandran Ashwin claimed five wickets while skipper Virat Kohli struck a dominant half-century to help India tighten its grip over England on the third day of the second Test in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.India, who dismissed England for 255 in the first innings, were 98 for three at stumps with Kohli (56) and Ajinkya Rahane (22) at the crease. With the hosts having stretched their second innings lead to a formidable 298, it will be an uphill battle for England from here on.It was Ashwins 22nd five-wicket haul in 41 Tests that helped India bowl out England shortly before tea and gain a crucial 200-run lead. The accuracy that he bowls with is something that is a challenge, England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who tackled Ashwins guile during his fighting fifty in Englands first innings, told reporters. He bowled nicely today but we are not going into the fourth innings thinking that we cant play Ashwin well, said Bairstow.England seamers came back roaring as Stuart Broad, who is nursing a foot injury, sent the Indian openers trudging back to the pavilion early in their second essay.Murali Vijay (3) was caught at gully while Lokesh Rahul (10) was plucked behind as England successfully used the review system on both occasions after the on-field umpire had adjudged the batsmen not out.Senior pacer James Anderson also swung into action to clean up first innings centurion Cheteshwar Pujara for one, reducing the hosts to 40 for three.Kohli and Rahane then got together to put up an unbeaten 58-run stand and thwart the persistent bowling attack in the final hour of play.Kohli, who led from the front with a sparkling 167 in the first innings, recorded his 13th Test half-century as he raised his bat to an applauding home crowd.Rahane played the supporting role to perfection with his patient 54-ball knock.England skipper Alastair Cook juggled with his seam and spin options but failed to make any more headway into the Indian batting.Earlier Ben Stokes, who top-scored with 70, and Bairstow struck gritty half-centuries to revive England after they resumed on the overnight 103 for five.We compliment each other obviously being left and right handed helps. And we rotated the strike pretty well, said Bairstow.Bairstows knock was cut short just before lunch when Umesh Yadav castled the wicketkeeper-batsman for 53.Bairstows departure ended a 110-run sixth-wicket partnership between him and his overnight partner Stokes who carried on the good work into the post-lunch session.Ashwin finally trapped the left-handed Stokes lbw and even though the batsman reviewed the decision, the on-field call was upheld by the third umpire.Adil Rashid scored an unbeaten 32 as Broad also came out to bat with purpose, but the English batting struggled to get close to Indias 455.Ashwin got Broad (13) and Anderson (0) off consecutive deliveries as the visitors fell one run short of avoiding the follow-on.Right now, Ash (Ashwin) is bowling beautifully, like a dream. You have to work on it (drift and spin), it doesnt just come overnight, debutant India spinner Jayant Yadav said of his senior partner. The tourists, who gave India a run for their money in the drawn Test in Rajkot, have struggled against the Indian spinners at Visakhapatnam which is hosting its first-ever Test.

Messi-less Barca fire blank against nine-man Malaga

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Barcelona paid a heavy price for the absence of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez as nine-man Malaga held out for a 0-0 draw at the Camp Nou on Saturday.Carlos Kameni produced an incredible 94th minute save from Neymar after Diego Llorente had been sent-off midway through the second-half.Juan Carlos also then saw a straight red in the sixth minute of time added on, but Malaga hung on as Barca blew the chance to go top of the table. The champions now trail leaders Real Madrid by a point ahead of their trip to Atletico Madrid later on Saturday.Five-time World Player of the Year Messi was ruled out just hours before the game due to illness, whilst Suarez was suspended. They are two of our most decisive players. They make the difference in the most important part of the pitch, but that cant serve as an excuse, said Barcas captain for the day Sergio Busquets. In the absence of Suarez, Paco Alcacer was handed a rare start, but his search for a first Barca goal continues as he failed to make any meaningful impact.Without his usual two strike partners, the focus was on Neymar to break down the mass ranks of Malaga defence. The Brazilian fired into the side-netting inside the first 10 minutes, but Barcas bright start quickly fizzled out.Rafinhas drive produced Kamenis only serious save of the first 45 minutes.Barca continued to dominate possession without a cutting edge at the start of the second period and should have been caught out on the counter-attack.Carlos had the best chance of the game just before the hour mark when he rounded Barca keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen but fired into the side-netting with the goal gaping.Malaga had to see out of the final 21 minutes with 10 men when Real Madrid loanee Llorente cynically chopped down Neymar and was shown a straight red card.Yet, even with a man advantage, Barca badly missed the creativity of Messi and injured captain Andres Iniesta as they resorted to launching cross balls into Gerard Pique, who moved forward from central defence to act as an emergency forward.Substitute Ivan Rakitic headed inches wide, whilst Pique also had a goal ruled out for offside after Andre Gomes had struck the bar. However, Barcas best chance came deep into stoppage time when an injured Kameni somehow clawed Neymars header from point-blank range to safety.Earlier, Sevilla moved up to third as they produced a stunning fightback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Deportivo la Coruna.Sevillas demons away from home looked set to strike once more when Ryan Babels first-minute opener and a wonderful individual effort from Florin Andone handed struggling Deportivo a 2-0 lead. However, in-form French midfielder Steven NZonzi launched the comeback with a vital goal just before half-time to give Sevilla hope. The visitors had to wait until three minutes from time to level when Vitolo fired home at the back post despite Przemyslaw Tytons best efforts. And Tyton was beaten again deep into stoppage time when he saved Nico Parejas first effort, but Mercado followed up to blast home the rebound.

Misfiring Liverpool held in Southampton stalemate

Posted:

SOUTHAMPTON, United Kingdom (AFP) - Premier League leaders Liverpool missed a chance to burnish their title credentials as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Southampton on Saturday.Jurgen Klopps men had the majority of possession, but Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster denied his former team-mate Sadio Mane in the first half and Philippe Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Nathaniel Clyne missed second-half chances.Liverpool remain in first place ahead of Manchester City only on goals scored, but now Chelsea will go above them with a win at Middlesbrough on Sunday. Both sides were without key creative players, with Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic not risked after breaking his nose while on international duty.Former Southampton captain Adam Lallana did not travel with the Liverpool party after sustaining an injury while playing for England. But Coutinho was deemed fit enough to start despite a hamstring problem while Dejan Lovren, another ex-Saint, returned to the back four after recovering from a virus.Lovren was jeered every time he received the ball in an early spell of Liverpool possession that forced the home side back towards their own penalty area. But when the Merseysiders were able to find a gap, either their touch or the final pass eluded them.Southampton were seeing little of the ball and were restricted to attacks on the break, one of which ended with right back Cedric Soares shooting a yard wide with his left foot from 22 yards. The Portugal defender then sent over a cross from the right that Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius punched clear under very little pressure.Otherwise it was mostly Liverpool and they created what could have been a decisive opening in the 28th minute when Georginio Wijnaldum found Mane free in the penalty area with an intelligent diagonal pass.Manes shot was struck hard and true but Saints England goalkeeper Forster flung himself to his left to save.Five minutes from the break, Mane had another chance as he charged goalwards from the right but Virgil Van Dijk slid in to block the Senegal wingers shot.Saints were still not an attacking force, which was shown when Charlie Austin got into the penalty area and looked around for support -- but found none. The second half opened in similar fashion. Liverpool appealed confidently but in vain for a penalty as Van Dijk tugged Firminos shirt, Forster saved Manes shot at the foot of his near post and Coutinho sliced his shot wide after Firminos pass sent him in on goal. Then it was central defender Joel Matips turn to miss chances. First he failed to reach Coutinhos inviting free kick from the right with an attempt at a header and the result was the same from a corner from the other side.Liverpools wastefulness almost cost them after 59 minutes when Austins head met a cross from Soares but his effort glanced just wide.Five minutes later Liverpool missed their best chance yet. Coutinhos pass found Firmino advancing into the penalty area with only Forster in front of him, but he slid his shot wide from 10 yards.Next, Clyne headed wide after beating teammates and opponents alike to a cross from substitute Daniel Sturridge. That was to be the final chance as Southampton settled for a draw after successive defeats by Chelsea and Hull.

Bayern Munich suffer first defeat of the Bundesliga season

Posted:

BERLIN, Nov 19, 2016 (AFP) - Borussia Dortmund stunned champions and arch-rivals Bayern Munich 1-0 on Saturday in a bad-tempered Der Klassiker clash to leave RB Leipzig the shock Bundesliga leaders.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang prodded in on 11 minutes at a frenzied Signal Iduna Park to propel Dortmund up to third on 21 points, three points behind Bayern, for whom this was a first defeat of the league season.RB Leipzig are top, unbeaten and three points clear of the mighty Bayern, after a thrilling 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen on Friday signalled another milestone in their fast, but controversial rise to the top of German football.Aubameyang scored the only goal of the game -- he should have gone on to grab at least two more -- poking in the ball from close range after ex-Bayern man Mario Goetzes cross. The striker celebrated with three push-ups and the home side were on the attack again moments later, the Bayern rearguard creaking as the fans at the intimidating 81,000 arena ratcheted up the volume once more.Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel said it had been a bruising encounter. We have suffered a lot, he said. But when you get into the ring with Bayern, you should not expect to step out again without black eyes.Philipp Lahm, the Bayern captain, admitted that neutrals would be delighted to see someone other than the Bavarians at the top.Its good for the Bundesliga, its what the whole world wanted, he added bitterly. The game simmered from the start and threatened to boil over as the first half wore on, with Dortmund conceding a series of free-kicks and referee Tobias Stieler struggling to keep a lid on it.Stieler had a word with Tuchel after he protested one challenge and Marc Bartra was booked for a bad one on Bayerns Thomas Mueller.Soon after Bartra was penalised again for tugging down Robert Lewandowski and was fortunate that Stieler decided to keep his cards in his pocket. The momentum was now with Carlo Ancelottis men and Bayern piled on the pressure, Thiago Alcantara just failing to properly connect with a flying scissor kick five minutes before half-time.Aubameyang should have put the home side 2-0 up soon after the restart, but he headed feebly over, and then Goetze got away with only a yellow card for a nasty challenge on Franck Ribery that left the Frenchman in agony on the turf. The visitors were a whisker from equalising around the hour mark when Xabi Alonso let fly from distance, the ball crashing off the crossbar. On 71 minutes Aubameyang should have sealed the game for Dortmund, but he shot straight at Manuel Neuer after a Bayern lapse at the back.Ribery was in the thick of it again in the dying minutes and was booked when the two sides clashed once more, the referees assistants running onto the pitch to help restore order.Polish predator Lewandowski should have levelled the score at the death but he inexplicably headed wide when clear and unmarked.Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig, who were only founded in 2009 when the Austrian drinks giants Red Bull took over a German Football League licence, stretched their unbeaten run to a record 11 games as defender Willi Orban delivered the winning goal nine minutes from time at Bayer Leverkusen.Kevin Kampl fired Leverkusen into an early lead at the BayArena but Julian Baumgartlingers own goal drew Leipzig level almost immediately.Germany international Julian Brandt made it 2-1 to the hosts just before half-time, but the turning point came when Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi saved a 54th-minute penalty from Hakan Calhanoglu.Emil Forsberg equalised for Leipzig following an impressive solo run on 67 minutes before Orbans late winner sent the Bundesliga upstarts three points clear of Bayern Munich.Cologne sit fourth, level on points with Dortmund, after Anthony Modeste struck his league-leading 12th goal in a 2-1 away win at Borussia Moenchengladbach.

Murray edges Raonic in a marathon-thriller to reach final

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Andy Murray remains on course for a dramatic showdown with Novak Djokovic as the world number one staged a superb fightback to defeat Milos Raonic 5-7, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (11/9) in the semi-finals of the ATP Tour Finals on Saturday.Murray will face world number two Djokovic or Japans Kei Nishikori in Sundays final after surviving a three-hour 39-minute classic that ranked as the longest match in Tour Finals history. The Scot, who saved a match point in the final set tie-break, must win the Tour Finals for the first time to be guaranteed to finish 2016 on top of the world rankings, with Djokovic able to overhaul him if he takes the title for a record-equalling sixth time.Murray would also finish number one if Djokovic loses to Nishikori later on Saturday. If Djokovic does make the final, he might find Murray running low on energy after the Wimbledon champion was pushed to his limits by Raonic just days after he had to endured the previous longest match in the tournament, a victory over Nishikori that took three hours and 20 minutes.I played some great points and managed to get the break at the end, Murray said.It was an amazing atmosphere. The longer the match went on the louder the crowd got. This is what we play for. Matches like this and arenas like this. This is one of hardest matches Ive played indoors. I didnt expect to play a long one with someone with a serve like Milos.Im tired. Ive played so much tennis over the last few months. Ill give it my best effort, the best of what I have.Raonic twice broke Murray when he served for the match in the final set and saved three match points in the decisive tie-break.But the Canadian fourth seed couldnt take the one match point that came his way in a thrilling denouement that eventually went Murrays way to repeat the outcome of their meetings in the Wimbledon and Queens finals on the other side of London earlier this year.Murrays 23rd successive victory set a new career-best for the 29-year-old but only a 24th would bring a fitting finale to the best year of his life.
