Football: More Wembley woe leaves Spurs in Euro danger

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham suffered more Champions League misery at Wembley as a 1-0 defeat against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday left them in danger of failing to qualify for the last 16.Mauricio Pochettinos side are playing their European matches at Wembley this season while White Hart Lane is being redeveloped and the temporary move has proved a disaster for the north London club.Already beaten by Monaco in their first game at their adopted home in September, Tottenham were rocked at Wembley again as Kevin Kampl bagged Leverkusens second half winner.Since winning their first match at the rebuilt English national stadium against Chelsea in the 2008 League Cup final, Tottenham have now lost six consecutive games at Wembley. It could have serious consequences for Tottenhams Champions League campaign as Leverkusens first ever win in England lifted them above the Premier League team into second place in Group E.Tottenham, without a win in their last six games in all competitions, are two points behind Leverkusen with two games remaining against Monaco and CSKA Moscow. We dont have the freedom to play and show real quality. After two games at Wembley, both have been poor. It is not an excuse, it is the truth, Pochettino said.We need to improve and change some things. We are in a bad moment.Leverkusen coach Roger Schmidt added: Im very happy because this was a very difficult away game and we won it.Tottenham are unbeaten in the Premier League so that makes it even more special.Pochettino had called on his players to embrace the Wembley experience and an English club record home crowd of 85,512 packed in to support them. But a series of sloppy Tottenham passes around their own penalty area almost presented Leverkusen with a chance in the first minute and the lethargy gripping Pochettinos side wasnt limited to the defence. With Harry Kane still not fit enough to feature after his ankle injury, Son Heung-min started up front in place of Vincent Janssen. Son had scored five times this season, but the South Korean was starved of service against his former club.An injury to Mousa Dembele, who was replaced by Janssen, did little to improve Tottenhams momentum. It took over half an hour before Tottenham had a shot when Christian Eriksens strike was pushed away by Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno.Leverkusens players trained among the joggers and dog walkers of Londons Regent Park on Wednesday morning and that low-key build-up seemed to relax them after a difficult spell in the Bundesliga. They should have been in front just before the break when Kyle Walker carelessly lost possession to Julian Brandt on the edge of the penalty area. When Brandt picked out Javier Hernandez a goal seemed certain, but the former Manchester United strikers shot was deflected away by Jan Vertonghen.Dele Alli had the ball into the net on the stroke of half-time, but the Tottenham midfielders effort was ruled out for a foul by Janssen in the build-up.Pochettinos team emerged in more vibrant mood after half-time and Alli appealed in vain for a penalty when he was sent sprawling by Omer Topraks lunge.Eriksen dragged his shot narrowly wide while Tottenham continued to protest and the hosts threatened again when Walker drilled a low strike past the far post.More negligent Tottenham defending, this time from Eric Dier, gifted Hernandez with another good chance, only for the Mexican to let him off the hook with two tame shots.Leverkusen finally made Tottenham pay for their error-strewn display in the 65th minute.Charles Aranguizs shot deflected off Ben Davies and then Walker before trickling through to Slovenia winger Kampl, who slotted past Lloris from close-range.Dier smashed a free-kick against the crossbar in the closing moments, but that was the extent of Tottenhams tepid and ultimately fruitless push for an equaliser.

Football: Higuain strikes but Lyon keep Juve waiting

Posted:

TURIN (AFP) - Gonzalo Higuain struck a first-half penalty but dominant Juventus failed to book their Champions League last 16 ticket after being stunned by Corentin Tolissos late leveller in a 1-1 draw with Lyon on Wednesday. The Italian champions looked to be heading for a 1-0 win after Higuain stepped up to beat Anthony Lopes from the spot before the quarter hour. But despite being outplayed for long periods, Lyon refused to give in and were finally rewarded when Tolisso bundled the ball past Gianluigi Buffon from a long free kick with six minutes left on the clock.Sevillas win against Dinamo Zagreb means Juventus dropped to second place in Group H to sit two points behind the Spaniards and are now just four ahead of Lyon with two games remaining. But Juventus Massimiliano Allegri refused to see the glass half-full.We missed a few chances but for me this is a positive result, said Allegri. Were still fighting for first place in the group and nothing has been decided yet. The Champions League is long.Lyon created the first chance of the night, Buffon forced to block Maciej Rybuss angled drive with both legs at his near post on eight minutes after a slick one-two with Alexandre Lacazette. But it served as a wake-up call to the Italian champions, who should have wrapped up the match by the end of the first half after Higuain spurned a golden chance to add to his opener.A great first touch from Dani Alves from Leonardo Bonuccis long cross set Mario Mandzukic for a quick strike from 18 yards that Lopes did well to block down low with his body on 11 minutes.Lyon coach Bruno Genesio had opted for youth at the centre of his defence, 19-year-old Mouctar Diakhaby given just his second Champions League start alongside 20-year-old Argentine Emanuel Mammana. But mistakes from both players could have proved costly.A slight push from Diakhaby on Stefano Sturaro as he awaited Higuains through ball on the left was enough to send the Italian to the turf.Referee Bjorn Kuipers pointed immediately to the spot and Higuain stepped up to send Lopes the wrong way.Juventus were being given acres of space, but on more than one occasion, Massimiliano Allegris men failed to capitalise.Sturaros smart lay off for Claudio Marchisio saw the midfielders first time effort shaved Lopes near post before the half hour.Six minutes later Lopes was forced out to thwart Mandzukic as he tried to reach Sami Khediras through ball and after Mandzukic did well to steal possession from Mammana as he headed back towards goal, Higuain somehow skied the Croats lay-off.Juves profligacy continued after the break, when a superb Bonucci long ball from deep in midfield found Miralem Pjanic behind the Lyon defence. The Bosnians unselfish header back towards Mandzukic set it up nicely, but with absolutely no pressure he skewed his effort wide.Allegri replaced a battle-weary Pjanic with Brazilian midfielder Alex Sandro and Mehdi Benatia came on for Leaonardo Bonucci on 68 minutes.Moments later, Sandro broke down the left to set up Higuain for a bundled shot from the edge of the box.At the other end, Buffon had the imposing physique of Andrea Barzagli to thank when he got down to block Maxime Gonalons drive after a puzzled-looking Sturaro somehow lost possession with the ball at his feet. Allegri replaced a tiring Higuain with Juan Cuadrado with seven minutes remaining with the hope the speedy Colombian, who hit the winner at Lyon a fortnight ago, would conjure a late goal. But a minute later the stadium was stunned into silence when Buffon was well and truly beat by Tolissos late header. But for Genesio, it may be too little too late.Im satisfied with our performance but it will be difficult for us to qualify, he said.Im disappointed in that sense because we could have snatched three points.

Tennis: Djokovic laughs off 'guru' claims

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Novak Djokovic brushed off rumours he is resorting to spiritual guidance as he tries to keep hold of his number one ranking from the fast-charging Andy Murray.Djokovic cruised into the last 16 of the Paris Masters on Wednesday, beating Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 6-3, 6-4, but has suffered a worrying loss of form since completing a career Grand Slam at the French Open in June. The Serb said Murrays assault on his top ranking has rejuvenated him after a series of shock defeats, but the presence of Pepe Imaz in his players box hasnt gone unnoticed. While Djokovic travelled to Paris without Boris Becker and Marian Vajda for support this week, Spanish journeyman Imaz was courtside for Wednesdays second-round match.Imaz, once ranked in the worlds top 200, runs a tennis academy in Marbella that styles itself on prioritising a persons well-being, feelings and emotions.Djokovic features in a video entitled Love and Peace (Amor & Paz) on Imazs website, but the Serb rejected claims the Spaniard serves as his meditation guru.I dont know where you heard that hes a guru, first of all, said a smiling Djokovic. And second of all, hes been part of my team for several years. He worked with my brother (Marko) as well, he added, with Imaz reportedly helping out the younger Djokovic when his career fizzled out a couple years ago.Hes been in tennis for all his life. Im just glad that he came this week, together with my brother, to be with me and work with me. Im not going to go into details, because there is no sense. I mean, to me, its all funny and its all, in the end of the day, people can say and judge and do whatever they want, so Im not gonna give any room for speculations anymore. Hes been there, and hes part of the coaching team and thats all.

Tennis: France recall suspended duo for Fed Cup final

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - French Fed Cup coach Amelie Mauresmo has recalled Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic for the final against the Czech Republic this month after they were banned for unacceptable behaviour at the Rio Olympics. The French Tennis Federation provisionally suspended Garcia and Mladenovic, the French number one and two respectively, in August before clearing them to return last month.Mladenovic was accused of publicly criticising the federation after her and Garcias defeat in the Olympic doubles. She said in a tweet the federation failed to tell the players about tournament rules whereby they had to wear the same colours on court, forcing Garcia into a last-minute change of kit borrowed from her teammate. The federation lifted the ban after the duo apologised, although it extended the suspension of male teammate Benoit Paire. Garcia and Mladenovic will spearhead Frances bid for a first Fed Cup title since 2003 on November 12-13 in Strasbourg. They will be joined by Alize Cornet and Pauline Parmentier but face a strong Czech team led by two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova and sixth-ranked Karolina Pliskova. The Czechs are chasing a fifth title in six years, but Mauresmo, a key player the last time France won the Fed Cup, is confident her underdogs can upset the odds.Of course the Czech Republic is favourite. But its a sport. We are talking about sport. And this is what I said to the girls, said Mauresmo, former coach of Andy Murray. The ranking reflects 52 weeks, a whole season. What we need is just two days. So many things can happen over five matches. We were talking about their potential. Well, these girls are able to have very high-level moments in the season. They can rise to the occasion and they can beat extremely good players.

Boxing: Joshua-Klitschko spring showdown major step nearer

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - A mouthwatering world heavyweight title showdown early next year between Britains Anthony Joshua and former champion Wladimir Klitschko took a major step closer on Wednesday after the WBA sanctioned it.The exciting Joshua, 27, who won the IBF title in April after it was voluntarily vacated by troubled compatriot Tyson Fury, must first come through the defence of his belt against solid journeyman Eric Molina in December in Manchester.Joshuas manager Eddie Hearn had originally hoped the Klitschko clash would take place in December, but they had to wait on the WBA decision. In the meantime, Hearn acknowledged there was risk in taking on 34-year-old Molina, whose previous world title contest saw him push WBC holder Deontay Wilder to nine rounds in June 2015.Its been an arduous wait to gain official approval but we were delighted to receive the news that the WBA will officially sanction the fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko for the WBA super title, Hearn said on www.matchroomboxing.com.We will now move forward with (Klitschkos manager) Bernd Boente and Team Klitschko in planning the date and venue knowing that victory against Eric Molina in Manchester on December 10 is more important than ever.Matchroom said the fight would be staged in spring 2017.While it has been a momentous year for 2012 Olympic champion Joshua, who boasts a 17-0 record with all victories by knock-out, it has been a frustrating one for 40-year-old Klitschko. The Ukrainian had hoped to regain the IBF, WBO and WBA belts which he lost to Fury in a stunning upset last November. His rematch with Fury for the WBA and WBO belts had been set for July 9, only for an injury to force the British fighter out.Fury then pulled out of a second bout scheduled for late October because of depression and he vacated the WBA and WBO belts so he could focus on battling his mental turmoil.

Borussia Dortmund reach last 16 of the Champions League

Posted:

BERLIN (AFP) - Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday despite suspending striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. With two games still to play, Dortmund are guaranteed at least a top-two place in Group F.They now lead the group, two points ahead of defending champions Real Madrid, who drew 3-3 at Warsaw Legia on Wednesday.Dortmund delivered a shock before kick-off at Signal Iduna Park.Coach Thomas Tuchel suspended star striker Aubameyang for internal reasons and his replacement Adrian Ramos hit the first-half winner. The coach has taken the decision and it is absolutely correct, Dortmunds CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told Sky.The 27-year-old Aubameyang, who has scored 10 goals already this season, is suspended until Thursday and was cut from the match day squad. We completely accept there will be speculation, but internal means internal, added Tuchel.Ramos took Aubameyangs place in a 4-1-4-1 formation. The Colombia striker needed just 12 minutes to give Dortmund the lead with a looping header in his sides first real attack.Germany internationals Julian Weigl and Mario Goetze combined in the box, then Matthias Ginter put in a cross from the right flank.Ramos placed a pinpoint header past Sportings goalkeeper Rui Patricio into the top right corner.Sporting exploited the acres of space Dortmund left at the back with Gelson Martins twice going close. With half an hour gone, only the crossbar denied Dortmund a two-goal cushion.USA international Christian Pulisic combined with Goetze and crashed his shot off the woodwork. After the break, Sporting probed the Dortmund defence.Portugal international Adrien Silva came on for the final half an hour, going close on a few occasions.Tuchel then closed the game down. He replaced Goetze and Gonzalo Castro with Sebastian Rode and left-back Lukasz Piszczek for the final 20 minutes.Defensive midfielder Rode filled in for the more creative Castro, Piszczek took over on the right wing from Pulisic, who filled Goetzes attacking midfield role.Up front, Germany winger Andre Schuerrle, just back from injury, was a constant threat to the Sporting goal as Dortmund held on.Sporting remain without a win in Germany after one draw and now 12 defeats.Dortmund maintain their 100 percent home record against Portuguese sides in Europe with five wins from five. They can now focus on their poor Bundesliga poor and are winless in their last four domestic games.Borussia host bottom side Legia in their next game and their final group match at Reals Bernabeu stadium, on December 7, is likely to decide the group winner.

Real Madrid held to a draw by Legia Warsaw in six goal thriller

Posted:

WARSAW (AFP) - Real Madrid blew a two-goal lead and the chance to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Legia Warsaw behind closed doors in the Polish capital.Gareth Bale fired home Madrids fastest ever Champions League goal after just 55 seconds before teeing up Karim Benzema for Reals second. However, Legia launched a stunning fightback as goals from Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe, Miroslav Radovic and Thibault Moulin put the Polish champions on the verge of a famous victory.Mateo Kovacic salvaged some pride and a now 27-game unbeaten run for the European champions when he slotted home five minutes from time.A draw means Madrid now trail Borussia Dortmund by two points at the top of Group F with two games to play.Dortmund qualified for the last 16 with a 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon in the other game in the group. In front of an empty stadium due to Legias sanction for violence and racist chanting in their 6-0 thrashing by Dortmund in September, Bale celebrated his new bumper six-year Madrid deal in style by rifling a volley into the top corner.A comfortable night looked in store for the visitors when a brilliant team move saw Kovacic feed Bale on the right side of the area and his cut-back was deposited into the bottom corner by Benzema. However, Legia hit back with a stunning effort of their own as Odjidja-Ofoe finished off a fine individual effort by firing into the top corner.Madrid have now not kept a clean sheet in 10 games and coach Zinedine Zidanes decision to play an ultra offensive 4-2-4 formation backfired after the break as their lack of numbers in defence was exposed.Goalkeeper Keylor Navas was also to blame when he let Radovics low effort slip under him for the equaliser just before the hour mark.Real awoke from their slumber as Arkadiusz Malarz parried another fierce Bale volley before an off-colour Cristiano Ronaldo headed a great chance just wide.Yet, Madrid were caught out on the counter-attack seven minutes from time when Moulin looked to have sealed the most unlikeliest of comebacks when his curling effort clipped the post on its way past a helpless Navas.Real responded immediately as Kovacic drilled Dani Carvajals backheel into the bottom corner. And Madrid could even have salvaged all three points deep into stoppage time when substitute Lucas Vazquez smashed the crossbar.

Obama tells voters 'the fate of the Republic rests on you'

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Barack Obama warned American voters the countrys fate is in their hands Wednesday as Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumps White House battle went down to the wire. With six days until the election, the world looked on agog as a surge in support for Clintons 70-year-old Republican rival delighted Americas foes, made its allies queasy and spooked financial markets. The fate of the republic rests on your shoulders, the US president warned voters in North Carolina, one of a handful of swing states where the tight race will be decided. The fate of the world is teetering and you, North Carolina, are going to have to make sure that we push it in the right direction, he declared, rallying support for the Democrat Clinton to become his successor.I am not on the ballot, but I tell you what. Fairness is on the ballot. Decency is on the ballot. Justice is on the ballot. Progress is on the ballot. Our democracy is on the ballot. On Tuesday, Americans will chose between an elaborately-coiffed populist from the world of reality television and a scandal-tainted Democrat vying to be Americas first female president. The Trump-Clinton choice has left many US voters cold and polling numbers volatile, making it hard to predict who has a lock on the key states that will decide who wins the electoral college.Clinton remains ahead in most poll-based forecasts, but on Tuesday an ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll gave Trump a narrow lead, sending shock waves through nervous markets.Trump -- a rambunctious real estate mogul -- has been hit by scandals that would have sunk a less brazen showman: accused of sexual assault, of not paying taxes and of ties to Russias Vladimir Putin and the mob.But renewed FBI scrutiny of Clintons use of a private email server as secretary of state has helped mobilize the Republicans raucous fan base and underlined public doubts about the Democrats trustworthiness. With less than a week to go, market opinion is coming to the conclusion that a Trump win would create too much uncertainty and is bad for risk sentiment generally, said Kit Juckes, analyst at banker Societe Generale.US stocks followed the rest of the worlds markets lower. The Dow fell 0.4 percent and the broader S&P 500 was off 0.7 percent at the close. Earlier major markets in Asia and Europe had tumbled more than one percent. The dollar continued to slip against the euro, losing 0.3 percent from Tuesday to $1.1093, while the Mexican peso -- sensitive to Trumps threat to build a wall on the countrys US border -- lost one percent. The dramatic tightening in the opinion polls also frightened bookmakers. Irelands Paddy Power had already paid out $1 million to punters who bet on Clinton, assuming her victory a foregone conclusion. But on Wednesday, the firm said 91 percent of bets now favor Trump, whose odds have narrowed. This week, US Secretary of State John Kerry admitted the campaign has been downright embarrassing as he deals with Americas friends and foes abroad, and the latter were in full voice Wednesday.Irans supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei -- whose regime survives by painting America as a comic-book foe -- crowed that the catastrophic reality of the two candidates goes beyond what even we were saying. In Britain, a giant effigy of Trump wielding the head of his rival Clinton was to be burned during traditional November 5 bonfire night celebrations.Back in the United States, the long and often unedifying 2016 White House race is now being fought in a few corners of a few states.Trump, Clinton and their most prized surrogates have virtually taken up residence in Florida, Ohio and North Carolina. These three states offer the best chance for both candidates to cross the winning threshold of 270 out of 538 electoral college votes -- and to lock out their opponent. But the two White House hopefuls have also placed some final long-shot bets.Clinton was to travel to Arizona, which Democrats havent won since 1996 when her husband Bill claimed the presidency by a landslide. An Emerson poll on Wednesday had Clinton losing the state by only four percentage points. But both of its Republican US Senators have opposed Trump, offering the tantalizing prospect of a shock Clinton win.Meanwhile, Trump has raised eyebrows by campaigning in Wisconsin and Michigan, both traditionally Democratic states where polls show Clinton leading by six points or more. And he spent most of Wednesday in Florida, which is likely to make-or-break his presidential dreams.Pollster TargetSmart forecast that Clinton could win Florida -- and all but bar Trump any route to the White House -- by a massive eight point margin, 48 to 40 percent. The Florida poll, conducted with the College of William and Mary, used only a small sample of voters but targeted those who had already cast ballots under the states early voting law.An average of earlier Florida polls by tracker RealClearPolitics gives Trump a narrow 0.7 point lead there, but TargetSmarts survey suggests many registered Republicans have switched camps to Clinton.
