Spain, Italy cruise as Wales held again

PARIS (AFP) - Wales conceded an agonising late equaliser as Serbia battled to a 1-1 draw in a World Cup qualifier on Saturday as former champions Italy and Spain both won 4-0.Earlier Saturday, the Republic of Ireland had stunned Austria 1-0 in Vienna and are top of Group D on 10 points, with Serbia second on eight and Wales third on six.Gareth Bale rocketed Wales into a 30th minute lead in Cardiff after Hal Robson-Kanu dispossessed Matija Nastasic and fed the ball to the Real Madrid forward, who cracked home a powerful snap shot to make it 1-0.But Aleksander Mitrovic was fastest to react with four red shirts around him when Antonio Rukavina whipped in an inviting cross to level for the visitors late in the game.It was a disappointing result, we feel like we threw away two points. Were at home, 1-0 up after 85 minutes, its two points lost, Bale admitted after the game.Just moments before Serbia had levelled, Bale had seen a snapshot come agonisngly back off the post.Wales coach Chris Coleman was less disappointed and was looking down the road.We are four points behind Ireland but we play them twice, he said. We have a massive chance. Tonight the boys deserved all three points. It was the third game in a row the Welsh have gone ahead only to draw.We can be proud of ourselves. We are on the right track. Today we can be happy with one point, said Serbia captain Branislav Ivanovic. The Irish top Group D thanks to a James McClean strike three minutes after half-time in Vienna. This is going to be a very tight finish. But this has been a splendid start for us and we are delighted with the ten points, said Ireland boss Martin ONeill.Spain and Italy continue to set the pace at the helm in Group D and both have ten points.Spain played at Granada where Macedonias Darko Velkovski scored a 34th minute own goal before Votolo on 63 minutes, Nacho Monreal (83) and veteran striker Aritz Aduriz (85) gave them a comfortable win.Taking on minnows Liechtenstein, Italys Anfrea Belotti scored either side of strikes from Ciro Imobile and Antonio Candreva.Eran Zahavi converted an 18th minute penalty to set Israel on their way with Dan Einbinder and Eliran Atar making sure they beat Albania 3-0 in Tirana.Iceland failed to replicate their Euro 2016 heroics in a 2-0 defeat in Croatia, who are first in Group I.Croatia grabbed the lead after 15 minutes through Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic, but it was Iceland who took control after that in Zagreb, where the game was played out in front of empty stands after a FIFA stadium ban.Despite having plenty of the ball in both halves, Iceland failed to make the crucial breakthrough. And the home side punished them in injury time, Brozovic again doing the damage against the run of play.Croatia, now top of the group with 10 points from four games, finished the match with 10 men after Ivan Perisic was sent off at the death. Also in Group I, Turkey revived their slim hopes of making it to Russia in 2018 with a 2-0 home victory over Kosovo in Antalya.Burak Yilmaz and Volkan Sen scored within four minutes of one another in the second half to leave Kosovo bottom on just a solitary point.Georgia and Moldova played out a 1-1 draw in Tbilisi to remain rooted in the bottom two spots in Group D.

Chelsea stars lead Nigeria past Algeria

Posted:

ABUJA (AFP) - Victor Moses scored twice while Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel was also on target as Nigeria downed Algeria 3-1 to stay on course for the World Cup finals on Saturday.Nigeria have a perfect six points from two games in Group B, four ahead of Cameroon who drew 1-1 at home to Zambia. The Nigerians took the game to their opponents and were rewarded after 25 minutes when Moses was released by Mikel to fire past Algeria goalkeeper Rais MBolhi. The Super Eagles doubled their lead three minutes from the interval when Mikel controlled the ball at the top of the box and after a moment of hesitation, drilled it beyond the Algerian keeper.Algeria pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, when Nabil Bentaleb smashed home an unstoppable shot from distance.Man of the match Moses then put the game beyond the north Africans in stoppage time, when he smashed home off a low cross by substitute Ahmed Musa. The outcome could have been a lot different had the visitors made the most of two clear-cut chances in the first half.First, Schalke 04 star Bentaleb missed a sitter from inside the Nigeria box after 36 minutes. And minutes later, Riyad Mahrez came close to getting on the score sheet, but his shot just missed the target with the Nigeria defence at his mercy. When Algeria pulled a goal back, they pegged their hosts in their own half with the dangerous Yacine Brahimi tormenting the Eagles defence and Mahrez in charge of the midfield.Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, in for the injured Carl Ikeme, tipped away a free kick with nine minutes left on the clock.

England in driver's seat in first India Test

Posted:

RAJKOT, India (AFP) - Teenager Haseeb Hameed struck an unbeaten half-century on debut as England put themselves in a dominant position in the first Test against India at Rajkot on Saturday. At the end of day four, the tourists were 163 runs ahead of the top-ranked hosts with Hameed (62 not out) and skipper Alastair Cook (46 not out) giving their side a flying start in the second innings.Hameed, watched by his Indian-born father in the stands, batted confidently, hitting five fours and a six during his 141-minute stay at the wicket. At stumps, England were 114-0 after making 537 in their first foray at the Saurashtra Cricket Association ground, hosting its first Test ever.India were bowled out for 488 in the post-lunch session with leg-spinner Adil Rashid (4-114) emerging as the most successful bowler. With three sessions to go on a batsman-friendly wicket, England have now put themselves in a position to dictate terms to their formidable rivals.Rashid chose to be cautiously optimistic of Englands chances of finishing the game on top.Theres still a lot of cricket to be played tomorrow (Sunday), said Rashid.First we have to come out and put runs on the board and see where we are at lunchtime. If we are in a good position we might have a little bowl at India and see what happens.Rashid was also all praise for Hameed, calling him a great talent who worked very hard in the nets and was a good player of spin.England came into this five-match series after a demoralising first-ever Test defeat to minnows Bangladesh, and with a squad packed with inexperienced players. The home side owed much to Ravichandran Ashwin, who struck a crucial half-century to restrict Indias first-innings deficit to 49 runs.Ashwin, who came in to bat when the hosts were placed on a shaky 349 for five, made 70 off 139 balls to frustrate the visitors.Ashwin completed his seventh Test half-century in the process, emphasising once again his all-round skills. When England last toured India in 2012, Ashwin had proved to be a thorn in their flesh, averaging over 60 with the bat.It was also the last time that a visiting team took a first-innings lead in a Test in India.Indian batsman Murali Vijay said he expected his side to bounce back in the game. Its still a pretty good wicket but it has gone slower. There is a lot of assistance for spinners, he said.We still have a chance and if we take 3-4 early wickets it will be an interesting game. The morning session saw India losing in-form skipper Virat Kohli to a freak dismissal when the batsman was on 40.Kohlis back leg hit the stumps and dislodged a bail as he tried to pull away a short delivery from Rashid. He became the second Indian skipper to be hit-wicket after Lala Amarnath in the 1948-49 series at home against the West Indies.Kohli was also out in a similar fashion in a one-day international against England in Cardiff in 2011.India, 319-4 overnight, started the day cautiously with Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane (13) not taking any unnecessary risks against a disciplined England attack. But they were quick to latch on to poor deliveries, with Rahane imperiously pulling a short ball from Chris Woakes to the square leg fence.Rahanes flourish, however, proved short-lived as he lost his stumps to Ansari after completely misjudging the length. But it was the dismissal of Kohli, who has scored two Test double centuries this year, which hit India the hardest. The otherwise prolific Kohli had been keen to improve his dismal average against England but failed to build on his good start. He hit five fours in his 95-ball knock. The home team have won 12 and drawn one of their last 13 Tests at home since Englands historic 2-1 triumph in India in 2012.

Ex-South African batsman Petersen charged with match fixing

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Cricket South Africa (CSA) said Saturday they have charged former batsman Alviro Petersen with match fixing following a lengthy and ongoing investigation.Petersen, 35, captain of Highveld Lions, has been charged with multiple breaches of CSAs anti-corruption code. The charges include contriving to fix or otherwise improperly influence matches during the 2015 Ram Slam (national Twenty20 competition). The South African batsman, who played for Lancashire last season, has been provisionally suspended and has 14 days to respond to the charges.Gulam Bodi, Jean Symes, Pumelela Matshikwe, Ethy Mbhalati and Thami Tsolekile were all handed lengthy bans by CSA earlier this year for their part in attempting to fix Ram Slam matches.Petersen previously played for English county sides Glamorgan, Essex and Somerset, before joining Lancashire as a non-overseas player after he retired from internationals in 2015.Petersen had a highly respectable Test career, scoring 2,093 runs at an average of 34.88 in 36 Tests. He made a century on his Test debut against India in Kolkata during the 2009-10 season and formed a successful opening partnership with former captain Graeme Smith.Petersen hit five Test centuries, with a highest score of 182 against England in Leeds in 2012.He captained the Johannesburg-based Lions franchise for two seasons. After retiring from international cricket in 2015, he continued to play with success for the Lions and for English county Lancashire, while forging a reputation as a television and radio commentator and a newspaper columnist. In the latter capacity, he was a persuasive advocate for racial transformation in cricket, stating that black players needed to be given opportunities and to be nurtured. He was classified as black in South African racial terms, coming from the mixed-race Gelvandale area of Port Elizabeth. He set up the Alviro Petersen Foundation in 2013 with the aim of improving the lives of disadvantaged communities. The foundation includes a cricket school.Although Petersens name was mentioned after the scandal broke last year, he claimed he had not been involved and that he had reported approaches to the games anti-corruption unit three days after he became aware of the match fixing.

Murray, Djokovic tough to catch says Wawrinka

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Stan Wawrinka admits Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have set such high standards that he doesnt even think about moving above them in the world rankings.Murray ended Djokovics 122-week reign as world number one last weekend and the Scot is determined to outshine the Serb at the ATP Tour Finals next week to ensure he finishes 2016 in pole position. As the world number three, Wawrinka is the closest rival to the sports big two and he arrives at Londons O2 Arena on a high after being crowned US Open champion in September. But, despite winning a Grand Slam title in each of the last three years, the 31-year-old Swiss stars points tally of 5,115 is more than doubled by Murrays 11,185 and Djokovics 10,780.The remarkable consistency of the Murray and Djokovic makes Wawrinka believe is it almost impossible for him to ever become number one.Ive been winning Grand Slams but Im still really far from number one so thats why I dont think about that, Wawrinka told reporters in London.Andy and Novak have more than double the points and are so consistent getting to the final of every event.Im really happy where I am right now. Three Grand Slams in three years was something I never expected.Wawrinka was quick to pay tribute to Murray for his surge to the top in the second half of 2016 and he believes the Wimbledon champion is good enough to hold onto the prized place in the long term. Its amazing whats hes doing right now with his consistency and how he keeps winning, Wawrinka said.He deserves completely to be number one, Its not just the last few months. Its about the last 10 years and how hes pushed.Hes been near the top trying to win as much as he can.For sure its good for tennis. We all like Andy. Hes a really nice guy off the court. Its going to be interesting to see who finishes this year at number one because he is close with Novak, but for sure he can keep that level. After reaching the semi-finals of the Tour Finals for the last three years, Wawrinka would love to go one better this year.He faces a tough group with Murray, Marin Cilic and Kei Nishikori, who provides his first opponent on Monday in a rematch of the US Open semi-final won by Wawrinka earlier this year.Hes a tough player. Hes playing fast and trying to put a lot of pressure, Wawrinka said of Nishikori. Its important to stay heavy and push him back. You have to win the physical battle if you can. Its going to be a good first match.I want to finish the year well, I always enjoy to play here. Its an amazing tournament. For me it was always a dream to be play in the Tour Finals. Im so happy to be back.

French, Czechs level at 1-1 in the Fed Cup final

Posted:

STRASBOURG, France (AFP) - Caroline Garcia defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 to bring France level at 1-1 against the Czech Republic after the first day of the Fed Cup final on Saturday.Earlier, Karolina Pliskova beat Kristina Mladenovic 6-3, 4-6, 16-14 in an epic rubber which lasted 12 minutes short of four hours as the Czechs, chasing a fifth title in six years, got off to a sensational start.US Open runner-up Pliskova, the world number six, claimed victory having been 5-2 up in the decider and holding two match points at 9-8 in a match which shifted momentum at breath-taking speed.Mladenovic, the world number 42 and a close friend of her Czech rival since the pair were 10 years old, even served for the match herself at 12-11 but was unable to press home her advantage, with her challenge eventually undone by cramping. The last set was the longest to be contested in a final in the history of the tournament. It was my longest ever match, but I still feel pretty fresh, said 24-year-old Pliskova. She served really well so I had to wait for my chances. She found the big serve when she needed it.Mladenovic, who along with Garcia was recently reinstated in the French team following a suspension for bitter criticism of the countrys tennis federation at the Olympics, said her match had been draining.I have played long matches, but nothing compared to this, she said.We played the equivalent of a mens four- or five-set match. It was very tough emotionally as well as physically.Kvitova, the world number 11, faced 23rd-ranked Garcia fresh from her title run at the WTA Elite Trophy tournament in China which gave the Czech a 19th career crown. She was favourite to win a third meeting in four with Garcia but the French player made the most of an error-strewn performance by the Czech left-hander to claim an upset win on a second match point. It was Garcias fourth win in five Fed Cup singles rubbers this season as France stayed on course to claim a third title after triumphs in 1997 and 2003.Kvitova endured a trademark roller-coaster day, coming back from 2-4 in the opening set to lead 5-4 before shipping the ensuing tiebreak. She then fell 1-4 down in the second set before clawing back to 3-4. However, her 25th unforced error of the afternoon gave Garcia a break and 5-3 lead which the French player confidently converted into victory. On Sunday, Czech skipper Petr Pala, who is bidding to become the most successful Fed Cup captain of all time, will face a major selection dilemma.Despite a short turnaround Pliskova is due to play Garcia before Kvitova tackles Mladenovic in the second reverse singles.Garcia and Mladenovic, the top-ranked pairing in the world and French Open champions, are then set to meet Lucie Hradecka and Barbora Strycova in what could be the decisive doubles.

Hillary Clinton blames FBI Director Comey for her loss: report

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Hillary Clinton on Saturday blamed FBI director James Comey for her loss in the US presidential race, claiming that re-opening the probe into her email use broke the momentum towards victory.Clinton told fundraisers and donors in a conference call that Comeys two letters to Congress on the probe had tilted crucial states towards Republican Donald Trump, US media including Quartz and CNN reported. There are lots of reasons why an election like this is not successful, Democrat Clinton told her national finance committee, a person on the call told online magazine Quartz. But our analysis is that Jim Comeys letter raising doubts that were groundless (and) baseless -- and proven to be -- stopped our momentum. On October 28 -- less than two weeks before Election Day -- Comey dropped a bombshell by informing Congress the FBI was looking once more into Clintons controversial email practices as secretary of state after new messages were uncovered. His second letter, on November 6, just three days before the election, stated that the FBIs review of the new emails had uncovered no wrongdoing, and that the bureau had not changed its July recommendation not to charge Clinton. While the first letter reopened old wounds and reminded voters of the controversy, the second letter, according to Clinton, had the perverse effect of energizing rival Donald Trumps base, Quartz reported. The letters came just as Clinton was building momentum following strong performances at all three presidential debates, and after the release of a damaging recording of Trump boasting about groping women. After the third debate we felt so good about where we were, Clinton said, according to Quartzs source, who chose to remain anonymous. The campaign analysis showed that we were up in all but two of the battleground states, where we were tied or one point behind. In Arizona we were even. We felt real wind at our back. But she said the FBIs last-minute role was too much to overcome, a donor on the call told CNN.In July Comey said that the FBI would not recommend criminal charges against Clinton for handling classified documents and sensitive information on a private email account.Comey however slammed the practice as extremely careless. The FBI chief came under fierce criticism for effectively reopening the Clinton probe so close to the November 8 vote, without knowing whether the new emails were relevant.

Stop listening to Nisar, IS very much in Pakistan: Wajahat S Khan

Posted:

LAHORE: (Web Desk, Dunya News) – Dunya News Chief National Security Correspondent Wajahat Saeed Khan has on Saturday said that Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was in denial as Islamic State (IS) was very much in Pakistan. He said the federal minister must turn off the radio channel he was listening to, reported Dunya News.Talking to Dunya News on special transmission regarding Dargah Shah Noorani blast, Wajahat Saeed Khan said that Nisar was completely off the mark in his claims that IS didn’t exist in Pakistan.“Frontier Corps (FC) says Daesh (IS) is in Pakistan, Peshawar CTD (Counter Terrorism Department) said last month that they arrested Daesh people and handlers, Sindh Rangers say Daesh boys were involved in the attack on the Ismaili community. Now, I have a lot of respect for Chaudhry [Nisar] but I’d suggest him to switch off the radio channel that he’s tuned into and take off his tinted glasses”, Wajahat said.He added that FC, CTD, Karachi Rangers were all clear that IS existed in Pakistan. “Stop asking Chaudhry [Nisar] and ask the men directly dealing with this. You will know that IS is very much in Pakistan”, said Wajahat.“And this is not just the current interior minister. I just received former Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s message, telling me to watch him on some TV channel discussing international relations. These are the people who have ruled this country, and at such a time they are telling people like me on Whatsapp to watch their shows on international relations. Dude, stop international relations, you were in power for five years and you’re doing your publicity at this moment”, he added.Wajahat went to say that Prime Minister was all set to visit the area and there would be a big event there on Sunday.“If there is one thing civil and military leaderships agree on today is China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It is the one thing that has kept Rawalpindi and Islamabad still maintain a semblance of a working relationship. But listen to this: If you want this 50 billion dollars CPEC project to continue then wake up; there’s IS in Pakistan; Balochistan is underdeveloped; there is obviously some truth to the Reuters’ claims. And you cannot just get away with it simply by saying that the place was difficult to reach and Balochistan was backward. I don’t buy this. If you can make 150 nuclear warheads then you can also develop an infrastructure there”.According to Dunya News, 47 have so far been reported dead while there are certain claims of 90 deaths and over 150 injured as well.Read more:47 killed, 110 injured in attack on shrine in Balochistans HubEdhi sources are telling us at least 90 people have died and 150 injured in the bomb blast in Dargah Shah Noorani: Paramedics staff, Hub pic.twitter.com/y8VNSD3i1v— Dunya News (@DunyaNews) November 12, 2016

Trump, for the tech world or not?

LAHORE (Web Desk) – What Donald Trump will prove to be for technology around the world? A Step ahead or backwards?Whatever pathway Trump’s policies carve for technology sector in United States (US), the world is going to witness its effects, according to the experts.United States, being the leader in technology among other countries, impacts the world and President-elect’s policies will, many commentators agree, shape up the growth across the world.Trumps viewpoints on different issues during his campaign that became the subject of opinion leaders will have us assume his policies over technology:User privacyAt the time when San Bernardino was hit with shootings, FBI called for Apple to loosen the encryption so that mobile phones possessed by attackers could be studied. However, Apple refused by saying that users’ privacy took precedence.United States (US) President, Donald J. Trump criticised Apple’s move which is why experts have assumed his stance when it comes to users’ privacy.Trump said: Boycott Apple until such time as they give that information.Users privacy is going to be an issue with Trump when the POTUS is going to be advised by an appointed body to clear out the policy.H1-B visaH1-B visas are what US companies invariably use to fill their vacancies with talented individuals from around the world as it permits them a residence for the time being. However, the companies may choose to keep sponsoring the employees and extend their stay in the United States.During his campaign, the President-elect said that even he used H1-B visas and frankly, they should not be an option for the companies.Trump is not for H1-B visas as projected by his campaign and if he goes through with the stance, the Silicon Valley is going to bear adverse effects eventually leading to technological setback.Trump is ‘not’ for net neutralityNet neutrality, in simplest terms signifies equality for all the Internet users across the board.
