Pakistan to face World XI in first T20 today

Posted:

LAHORE (Dunya News) – The first Twenty20 International of the three-match Independence Cup between Pakistan and World XI will be played here at the Gaddafi Stadium today (Tuesday). After a gap of eight years, top international cricketers are touring Pakistan in the form of World XI squad. The World XI squad comprising 13 players from seven top cricket-playing nations landed in Lahore early Monday amid massive security, with Pakistan hoping the tour will end years of international isolation.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Najam Sethi and other officials were present at the Allama Iqbal International Airport, Lahore to welcome the World XI squad.West Indies Samuel Badree was the only player in the 14-man squad who reached Lahore on Tuesday morning due to his commitment with the CPL.Pakistan has not hosted top-level international cricket -- barring five limited over matches against minnows Zimbabwe in 2015 -- since the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by terrorists in March 2009, killing eight people and injuring seven players and staff. The World XI, which will play three Twenty20 internationals from Tuesday, arrived around 2:00am Pakistan time (2100 GMT) with air surveillance and dozens of police vans in attendance as the team was whisked to their hotel. Both the hotel and stadium will be cordoned off with 9,000 police and paramilitary staff deployed during the next five days. The World XI is led by South African skipper Faf du Plessis and coached by former Zimbabwe batsman and ex-England coach Andy Flower.Since the 2009 attack Pakistan have been forced to play most of their “home” games in the United Arab Emirates -- with the PCB complaining they have incurred losses of around $120 million. On the field, Pakistan will start favourites in their first outing since their remarkable victory at the 50-over Champions Trophy in England in June. The World XI are led by South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and feature his countrymen Hashim Amla and David Miller, plus Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal and Australia’s George Bailey in strong batting line-up.They have also tempted out of retirement at the age of 41 the captain of England’s 2010 World T20-winning side, Paul Collingwood.A potent bowling attack comprises South Africa’s Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir, with Australian Ben Cutting and West Indies’ Samuel Badree and Darren Sammy.“I am positive that this series will serve to open the doors of international cricket in Pakistan,” said PCB chairman Najam Sethi.Support from the International Cricket Council (ICC) has been crucial. The ICC have accorded international status on the matches, which will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and are sending former West Indian great Richie Richardson as referee.“The ICC wants to see regular international cricket being played safely in all its member countries and the World XI playing in Lahore is a step towards that for the PCB,” said ICC chief executive David Richardson.“We are optimistic that this will be the next step in a steady and safe return of international cricket to Pakistan.”Whatever the result, if it passes without incident it will pave the way for a further, hugely symbolic step: the return of Sri Lanka next month.

Pakistan tour 'more than cricket' for Faf and Flower

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - The World XIs tour of militancy-racked Pakistan is more than just a game, captain Faf du Plessis and coach Andy Flower said Monday, amid high hopes it will revive international cricket in the country.South Africas du Plessis told reporters in Lahore it was a huge honour to be playing the highest-profile event in cricket-mad Pakistan since a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in 2009.Pakistan has not hosted top-level international cricket -- barring five limited-over matches against minnows Zimbabwe in 2015 -- since that attack, which killed eight people and injured seven players and staff. Its not every day you get an opportunity to play in something that is much more than just about yourself and your own team or your own country, du Plessis said.World XI coach Andy Flower, who toured Pakistan in 1993, 1996 and 1998 with Zimbabwe, said he and his team were privileged to be there. We, as the World XI, would also like to offer our sympathy and condolences to all those who have lost their loved ones in terrorist acts in Pakistan, he said. These cricketers are here to play their part in the safe and steady return of international cricket in Pakistan, so that the enthusiastic and diehard fans and followers of Pakistan cricket can once again start watching their stars in their own backyard.Officials have said there will be foolproof security for the three-match Twenty20 series starting Tuesday in Lahore. Both the hotel and stadium will be cordoned off, with 9,000 police and paramilitary staff deployed.Shops and restaurants around the venue will be shut while spectators will have to pass through multiple security checkpoints.Du Plessis said he was confident in the security arrangements. You do think about that sort of thing, but as soon as we spoke to the people who were in control of the security... as a player all you want was that peace of mind and they gave it to us.Once the players boarded the plane, he said, their fears vanished as they began to look forward to taking part in what he described as a huge turnaround in world cricket.Since the 2009 attack Pakistan have been forced to play most of their home games overseas. But security has dramatically improved in the last two years, signalling hopes for the slow revival of international sport.Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi said the World XIs arrival was a great day for Pakistan, though he admitted there was still a long way to go.International Cricket Council head Giles Clarke said it was still a long road and a lot of work. But he said events such as the final of the popular Pakistan Super League in Lahore earlier this year had made the World XI tour possible.Everybody had the courage and the confidence to play here (after that) and that was essential for this series, he said.Sethi thanked the World XI players for agreeing to the tour, and said the PCB now expects more doors to open.Sri Lanka are set to make a hugely symbolic return to Lahore as part of a full series against Pakistan in October. Pakistan also hope West Indies will play three T20s in the city in November.

Du Plessis to lead South Africa in all formats

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South Africa Test captain Faf du Plessis was on Monday named as the countrys one-day international skipper to add to his leadership roles in Test and Twenty20 internationals.Du Plessis, who is in Lahore this week to lead a World XI in three T20 internationals against Pakistan, takes over from AB de Villiers.De Villiers announced recently that he was stepping down from the ODI captaincy despite an earlier stated ambition to lead South Africa to the 2019 World Cup.Congratulations to Faf on his appointment as the natural successor to the ODI leadership, CSA chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in a statement. He has established himself as one of the best leaders in world cricket and this was reflected in his appointment as the captain for the World XI currently engaged in the T20 Series against Pakistan.Du Plessis has forged a strong captaincy record after initially being appointed only to the T20 role in 2012.He was named full-time Test captain last year after De Villiers decided to take a break from the longest cricket format after missing two series because of injury.Du Plessis led South Africa to series wins against New Zealand (twice), Australia and Sri Lanka before South Africa were beaten in a recent series in England. He also captained South Africa to a 5-0 ODI sweep against Australia while De Villiers was injured.South Africas next international engagement is at home against Bangladesh, who will play two Tests, starting on September 28, followed by three ODIs and two T20 internationals.Fast bowler Dale Steyn, who has not played any cricket since suffering a broken shoulder in a Test in Australia last November, could make his international return in the Test series. He is planning to play for the Titans franchise in a first-class match next week after a long period of rehabilitation.Steyn needs five wickets to overtake Shaun Pollocks South African Test record of 421.Bangladesh will be without star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan in the Tests after he requested a break from the longest format.

Bangladesh's Shakib to sit out of upcoming Tests

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs Shakib Al Hasan, the worlds leading all-rounder, will sit out of two Test matches during a tour of South Africa this month after asking for a break from the longer format, selectors said Monday. The 30-year-old has played every Test for Bangladesh since missing two games against the West Indies in 2014, but earlier Monday requested a six-month sabbatical from the game to refresh his body.Bangladesh will also play three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games in South Africa during their first tour to the country since 2008. Shakib earlier said he would be available for other formats. But the Bangladesh Cricket Boards decision to accept the request means Shakib will also miss the two-Test series against Sri Lanka at home in December-January.We still cannot think of a team without Shakib. But he wanted a break and it was granted, said chief selector Minhajul Abedin while announcing the team at a press conference in Dhaka. He was playing for a long time in all formats. So he needed a rest. Of course, without him we will be on the back foot, still we have to manage it.He added that Shakib would be welcome back into the team whenever he wished. The news comes amid concerns over player fatigue, as well as criticism that players are prioritising earning money over representing their countries. In Shakibs absence, Bangladesh selectors recalled batsman Mahmudullah, who missed the recent home series against Australia due to poor form.We included Mahmudullah because he can do well abroad, where the ball comes first on to the bat. He is a senior batsman and an experienced batsman, Abedin said.Pace bowler Rubel Hossain and Subashis Roy also returned to the side while the selectors dropped batsman Nasir Hossain. The first Test will be held at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom from September 28 to October 2 while Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein will host the second Test from October 6-10.Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar , Imrul Kayes, Liton Das, Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman, Mehedi Hasan, Shafiul Islam, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Subashis Roy, Mominul Haque.

Fresh Hope for West Indies after England Tests

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Given West Indies decline as a Test force has been 20 years in the making, it may be unwise to say that Saturdays 2-1 series loss in England means they have turned a corner.Ive heard it so many times and its always the same old story, said fast bowling great Michael Holding, a key member of West Indies all-conquering teams of the mid 1970s and early 1980s.Have we turned the corner? Weve turned about 40 corners since the year 2000, added Holding, now a television commentator. The lack of first-class infrastructure once disguised by a seemingly unending supply of world-class talent that saw the likes of Gordon Greenidge, Desmond Haynes, Malcolm Marshall and Joel Garner -- and they were just from Barbados alone -- bestride the world game, eventually hurt West Indies Test fortunes.More recently, the rise of lucrative Twenty20 events including the Caribbean Premier League -- this years edition clashed with the Tests in England -- has meant players can earn huge sums of money without having to first play in the five-day game.West Indies arrived in England without the likes of Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels who, as a result of a thaw in a bitter dispute between Caribbean cricket chiefs and senior players, will be featuring in the upcoming one-day leg of the tour. They duly lost the series opener, the inaugural day/night Test in Britain, by an innings and 209 runs inside three days at Edgbaston.Yet within days they had bounced back to win the second Test at Headingley by five wickets -- their first Test match victory in England since 2000.Shai Hope led the way in Leeds by scoring two hundreds -- his first Test centuries -- only to suffer a nine-wicket defeat, again inside three days, at Lords. Before the first Test, Hope averaged a modest 19.57 and had scored just 372 runs in 10 previous Tests.By the end of the series, in which he was the highest scorer on either side with 375 runs, his average had shot up to 31.12.It wasnt just the weight of runs represented primarily by his 147 and 116 not out at Headingley that was impressive but the way Hope scored them too.The 23-year-old showed plenty of composure against the swinging ball as well as stylish shot-making ability, qualities that were both in evidence during a second-innings 62 at Lords that was probably worth double given the tough batting conditions.Kraigg Brathwaite, only a year older at 24 than Hope, came within five runs of twin Headingley hundreds and the pairs partnerships in Leeds suggested they could be the cornerstones of the top order.Kemar Roach and Shannon Gabriel, for all the latters no-ball problems, formed a solid new-ball pairing although Jason Holder, for all his admirable qualities, may be more of a fourth seamer than a first change bowler.Holder warned that only senior batsmen Darren Bravo and Gayle, among those currently out in the cold, wanted to return to the Test arena. But apart from Darren I dont think theres anybody else whos interested in playing Test cricket that we can really call upon or the so-called big names people are looking for, Holder said after Saturdays loss at Lords.Chris has probably hinted that he would like to play if hes fit enough.West Indies, still a lowly eighth in the world Test rankings, travel to fellow strugglers Zimbabwe next month with all-rounder Holder heartened by their displays in England.Hopefully we can learn from this, we have New Zealand at the end of the year which could be similar conditions and similar type of bowlers, so it should be good chance to take what weve learnt here into that series, he said. But first weve got Zimbabwe, in a few weeks time, so hopefully we can really kick on from there, he added.Obviously Shai was outstanding in this entire series and we must not forget Kraiggs contribution as well, he really did a hell of a job, especially at Headingley.I think weve shown improvement. Weve definitely shown that, especially in our bowling.

Mexico quake toll rises to 96

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Authorities recovered more bodies Monday from the rubble of the Mexicos huge earthquake, bringing the death toll to 96 as the president prepares to visit the worst-hit region, his office said. The latest deaths were reported in the southern state of Oaxaca, which bore the brunt of Thursdays quake and which President Enrique Pena Nieto was expected to visit on Monday.Mexican authorities gave a toll of 90 on Sunday.Pena Nietos spokesman said the president would supervise the delivery of food aid and blankets during his trip, but did not specify where. The defense and navy ministries had organized an airlift to Oaxaca and neighboring Chiapas and were bringing in heavy machinery to remove rubble, presidency spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told Televisa. He acknowledge that the distribution of food and shelter is complicated as both regions are mountainous and the worst-hit areas were very difficult to reach.Oaxacas governor Alejandro Murat said at least 12,000 homes were damaged in his state, and called on those affected to make their own way to shelters because it was proving impossible to distribute aid house by house.Mexican seismological authorities measured the quake at 8.2, making it a magnitude greater than the 8.1 quake that killed 10,000 people in Mexico City in 1985.

Car-sharing means fewer cars, busier roads in 2030: study

Posted:

FRANKFURT AM MAIN (AFP) - A boom in car-sharing could slash the number of vehicles on European roads by 80 million by 2030, a study published Monday predicts. But roads could become busier even as Europes fleet of cars falls from 280 to 200 million, consultancy PwC forecasts, as shared vehicles will be used much more frequently than privately-owned ones.Within a few years, the present norm under which most people drive their own car will be just one mobility concept among many, PwC auto expert Christoph Stuermer said. The experts believe up to one in three kilometres travelled on European roads could use some form of car-sharing in future, predicting that services will become just as accessible in the countryside as in cities.Increasing numbers of electric and self-driving cars will encourage people to try out car-sharing, PwC expects. And self-driving cars will make some journeys with no human on board at all, for example on their way to pick up passengers.Shared vehicles drive around 58,000 kilometres per year, the study found, or roughly the equivalent of a taxi -- compared with just 13,200 for a private car. That means they will have to be replaced more often, likely every 3.9 years rather than the 17.3 seen today.Higher turnover in the fleet could boost the number of new cars registered in Europe by 33 percent by 2030, to 24 million units.Carmakers and their suppliers will face critical decisions in the coming years, Stuermer warned, as they are forced to invest heavily in new factories and research and development even as margins fall and new competitors arise. Those without the critical mass in market share to weather the storm could find themselves squeezed out.For now, public acceptance has some way to go before the most drastic of the studys visions come true. Some 54 percent of Germans would never join a car-sharing scheme, PwC found, compared with 84 percent of Chinese who would give it a try.

Mourinho plays down Champions League hopes

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho has played down Manchester Uniteds chances of Champions League glory, saying English domestic fixture congestion will work against the three-time European champions. The Premier League pacesetters are set to open their campaign against Swiss champions Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday after qualifying for the competition by winning the Europa League.Mourinho rested key players in Premier League matches towards the end of last season in order to save them for Europe, which he believed offered their best chance of Champions League qualification.Real Madrid and Juventus, who contested last seasons Champions League final, were also able to keep players fresh for Europe but still won their domestic leagues, while United finished sixth.According to Mourinho, both Real and Juve enjoyed an easier domestic schedule, pointing to the lack of a winter break in England. The only thing I can say is that Real Madrid last year played the last month in La Liga with the second team, he said. They could do it. And they arrived in the Champions League final with a fresh team.Juventus, because they were champions in Italy three months in advance, they could play... with the second team and arrive fresh for the quarter-final, the semi-final, the final of the Champions League. The United boss said it was impossible for English teams to do likewise because usually competition in the domestic game remained fierce until the end of the season.Mourinho said he had no complaints about how English football was set up and that he had the option to rest players.Winter breakI know it goes against us but I have to admit I love the English Christmas period of football, said the United boss. And then there is the fact that we have to play many times two days before the big matches in Europe and then other countries protect their clubs.Midfielder Marouane Fellaini has been struggling lately with a calf problem, and Mourinho appeared to express irritation with Belgium manager Roberto Martinez for fielding him in the recent World Cup qualifying win over Greece despite the injury. He had a problem in the national team and he played against Greece and after the match, he felt the problem, Mourinho said.Asked if Fellaini had the problem before the Greece game, Mourinho said: Yes. He added: When the players go to the national team, they belong to the national team.Goalkeeper David de Gea is set to be Uniteds first-choice goalkeeper in Europe, with Mourinho confirming he will not repeat his selection policy of last season, when back-up Sergio Romero played in the Europa League.De Gea said that it was tough for Uniteds players to watch the Champions League last season, with the club not involved. He said: It was hard to watch the Champions League games on the TV last season. For a club such as Manchester United not to be in the games was hard but now we are back and motivated to bring Champions League games to Old Trafford. We need to play our best football to win the games.
