Emerging Bangladesh face tough examination

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Bangladeshs quest for recognition as a significant world cricket force faces a tough examination on their tour of South Africa, which starts Thursday with a three-day match against an invitation side.Bangladesh will play two Test matches, three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals. They have lost by an innings in all four Tests they have played on two previous tours of South Africa, as well as losing six of seven one-day internationals and two Twenty20 internationals against the hosts. The lone exception was an abandoned game on their most recent tour in 2008/09.The tour itinerary indicates Bangladeshs relatively lowly status as they will not play at any of South Africas major grounds. The Tests are in Potchefstroom and Bloemfontein, which have hosted only one and four Tests respectively. Potchefstrooms only previous Test, in the 2002/03 season, also involved Bangladesh. The one-day and T20 matches will be at Kimberley, Paarl, East London, Bloemfontein and Potchefstroom, all infrequent international venues.Bangladesh will be buoyed by a solid recent record, despite being without star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan for the Tests.Since former Sri Lankan batsman Chandika Hathurusingha took over as coach in 2014 they have gained some notable results, including Test wins against England, Sri Lanka and Australia. They shared a rain-hit home series against South Africa in 2015.They have recorded one-day wins against England, Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and New Zealand during Hathurusinghas tenure, while they beat South Africa 2-1 in a three-match series at home in 2015.Their away record remains poor, however, despite a Test win against Sri Lanka in Colombo in March, and they will have to adapt quickly to the expected pace-friendly pitches in South Africa. The team suffered a setback when they departed from Dhaka last Saturday when fast bowler Rubel Hossain was prevented from boarding because he did not have an immigration clearance.TEST SQUAD:Bangladesh: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt/wkt), Tamim Iqbal, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman, Mohammad Mahmudullah, Liton Das (wkt), Mehidy Hasan, Taijul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Shafiul Islam, Taskin Ahmed, Subashis Roy, Mominul Haque.Coach: Chandika Hathurusingha (SRI).

Security fears force WCL to move Kenya match to South Africa

Posted:

NAIROBI (AFP) - The World Cricket League (WCL) Championship qualifying match between leaders Netherlands and Kenya has been moved from Nairobi to East London in South Africa due to security concerns in Kenya.Kenya was due to host the sixth round match at the Nairobi Gymkhana club grounds on October 6 and 8, but political uncertainty and security concerns ahead of the October 17 presidential election re-run had led to a switch of location. The Netherlands Cricket Board seems to have raised the issue with the International Cricket Council (ICC), which have informed us that the game will now be played at the Buffalo Park cricket stadium in East London in South Africa, Cricket Kenya said in a statement Wednesday. It is the second WCL Championship match Kenya is being forced to play away from home. The country is currently placed fifth in the standings. The decision to play the game in the colder climate of East London may not favour our team which is playing the catch-up to finish among the top four in the championship, Cricket Kenya said. The Netherlands head the eight-team championship with 16 points followed by Papua New Guinea, which are two points behind in second place from 10 matches played.Scotland are third on 13 points with Hong Kong in fourth with 11.The top four teams will join the lowest ranked four from ICC One Day International (ODI) championships for the 2018 Cricket World Cup qualifiers, which will decide who will play in the 2019 World Cup in England.

India reach three-Test South Africa compromise

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - India will play three Test matches in South Africa this season, the boards of both countries announced on Wednesday. The first Test will start in Cape Town on January 5 while details of the remaining two Tests as well as six one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals will be announced later.South Africa will also stage its first day-night Test, planned as a four-day match against Zimbabwe in Port Elizabeth from December 26 to 29.Wednesdays announcement followed negotiations which have taken place over several months.Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat admitted it had been necessary to compromise to some extent in order to fit in a tour between the end of Indias series against Sri Lanka, ending on December 24, and the start of a Test series between South Africa and Australia starting on March 1.The time constraints faced by India have forced us to reduce the Test matches to three while increasing white ball cricket to six ODIs and three T20I matches, said Lorgat. The original plan was for four Tests, three one-day internationals and three Twenty20 internationals. The compromise over the India itinerary left a gap for what has become a traditional Boxing Day Test in South Africa. That gap will be filled by Zimbabwe, who have not played a Test in South Africa since 2004/05.Lorgat said there were new floodlights at Port Elizabeths St Georges Park.It will be the first-ever four-day day-night Test match and hopefully we will get International Cricket Council approval at their meeting in October to have an official Test match played over four days. With a total of ten Test matches -- two against Bangladesh, one against Zimbabwe, three against India and four against Australia -- it will be South Africas busiest Test summer.Cricket South Africa wanted the first Test against India to start on December 26 but India want to spend time in South Africa after the end of the Sri Lanka series. They will play a two-day practice match in Paarl on December 30 and 31.

French President terms Rohingya crisis in Myanmar as 'genocide'

PARIS (AFP) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday said attacks on Myanmars Rohingya minority amounted to genocide.France will work with other members of the UN Security Council for a condemnation of this genocide which is unfolding, this ethnic cleansing, Macron said in an interview with the French TV channel TMC.Macrons use of the word genocide marks his strongest verbal attack yet on the military drive against the Rohingya.More than 420,000 members of the Muslim minority have fled Myanmar for the safety of neighbouring Bangladesh. We must condemn the ethnic purification which is under way and act, Macron said.Asking for the violence to end, asking for humanitarian access... progressively enables an escalation under UN auspices, Macron said. When the UN issues a condemnation, there are consequences which can provide a framework for intervention under the UN, Macron said.Rohingya, who are predominantly Muslim, are reviled by many in Buddhist-majority Myanmar. The UN human rights chief has described the systematic attacks against the Rohingya minority by the security forces as a textbook example of ethnic cleansing.

England's Root says ODI change is as good as a rest

Posted:

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Joe Root says he will be refreshed rather than fatigued by playing a full part in Englands one-day international campaign against the West Indies -- even with the Ashes tour looming.Roots first away series as Test captain will be the defence of the Ashes in Australia, starting in Brisbane in late November. But although he has now overseen home series wins over South Africa (3-1) and West Indies (2-1) in his first season as Test skipper, the star batsman -- an England regular in all three international formats -- has no interest in taking a break just yet.He chipped in with 54 vital runs as England beat West Indies by seven wickets in the first of the five-match ODI series in Manchester on Tuesday.Together with Yorkshire team-mate Jonny Bairstow, whose 100 not out was his maiden ODI century, Root put on 125 for the second wicket as England made light work of chasing down a modest target of 205.I feel good.... We had a chat before the series and said do I feel like I can play?, said Root, who returns to the ranks in white-ball (limited-overs) internationals, with Eoin Morgan captaining England.Every time I feel fit and that I can deliver at my best Ill go out and play for England, said Root.I love the opportunity we get every time we put on the shirt. Its such a proud feeling and Ive never lost that from the start, the 26-year-old added. And with Root, an occasional off-spinner, able to leave captaincy duties to Morgan in the 50-over game, the Test skipper said the change in formats is almost as good for him as the actual match break given to the likes of star all-rounder Ben Stokes, rested from last weekends Twenty20 loss to the West Indies.HonestAs players, you know yourself better than anyone else and in the best interests of this and the Test team you need to be really honest, said Root. Only you really know if you are struggling or tired.I think a change in formats is almost a little break in itself. You think about different things, you approach training differently and you are having a break from red-ball (Test) cricket.Root hailed the century made by Bairstow, with the Test wicketkeeper -- for so long on the fringes of the ODI side -- now on the verge of establishing himself as a specialist 50-over opener. The best thing about Jonny is that he can bat anywhere in the top six, said Root. He has a great game, a brilliant power game where he can be destructive at the backend or the Powerplay up front and he also rotates the strike very well. The one disappointment for Root on Tuesday was when he dropped Chris Gayle in the slips when the West Indies dangerman was on nought.Root, however, made amends when he held a brilliant running catch over his shoulder to get Gayle for 37 after the big-hitting opener skied Chris Woakes.I saw it the whole way (the dropped chance), said Root ahead of Thursdays second ODI at Trent Bridge.I thought it could be quite costly, and when the second one went up I thought I have to get there -- a huge amount of relief when I managed to cling on to it.

'Raging Bull' boxer Jake LaMotta dead at 95

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Jake LaMotta, the legendary former world middleweight boxing champion whose wild life and times inspired the Oscar-winning movie Raging Bull, has died at age 95, his family announced Wednesday.LaMotta, an iconic figure from boxings 1950s golden age best known for a brutal six-fight rivalry with Sugar Ray Robinson, passed away on Tuesday, the boxers daughter Christi LaMotta said on Facebook.LaMottas seventh wife, Denise Baker, told the TMZ.com website that the fighter died in a nursing home following complications from pneumonia.I just want people to know, he was a great, sweet, sensitive, strong, compelling man with a great sense of humor, with eyes that danced, Baker was quoted by TMZ as saying.Robert De Niro, who won an Oscar playing La Motta in the 1980 classic Raging Bull, led the tributes, saying in a statement: Rest in peace, champ. The De Niro-founded TriBeca Film Festival later posted a picture of the actor alongside LaMotta and the films director Martin Scorsese.LaMottas long life belied a lengthy career in the ring which was notable for some of the most bruising battles the sport has ever seen.In a career spanning 1941 to 1954, LaMotta racked up a record of 83 victories, 30 of them knockouts, against 19 defeats, according to the boxing statistics website BoxRec.On June 16, 1949 he scored a knockout win over French boxer Marcel Cerdan to capture the middleweight title. After two successful defenses, he lost the belt in 1952 in his sixth bout against Sugar Ray Robinson. The final fight with Robinson took place on February 14, 1951, and was dubbed the Saint Valentines Day Massacre.Savage beatingLaMotta, his eyes badly swollen and unable to see clearly, refused to go down and endured a savage beating before the contest was stopped in the 13th round with LaMotta clinging onto the ropes. If the referee had held up another 30 more seconds, Sugar Ray would have collapsed from hitting me, LaMotta later joked.Robinson would describe LaMotta as his most durable opponent in the ring.Hes the toughest guy I ever fought, I never knew anyone who was more aggressive and rough as he, Robinson said years later.LaMotta retired in 1954 after a split decision defeat to Billy Kilgore in Miami.Decades later, his remarkable and often violent life story was brought to a wider audience with Martin Scorseses spellbinding Raging Bull. The film charted LaMottas rise, which included a controversial fight against Billy Fox which he threw under orders from the Mafia, his abusive second marriage, as well as his dramatic post-boxing fall.In retirement, LaMotta entered the hospitality industry, managing restaurants and bars. However in 1958 he was arrested and charged with introducing men to an underage girl after a teenager entered his Miami nightclub. He was convicted of pimping and spent six months on a chain gang in Dade County, Florida.Later, LaMotta would find fame on the standup comedy circuit, breaking down his life into a series of memorable one-liners that revealed a flair for comic timing. Were going to talk about the art of self-defense tonight -- in order to defend yourself you need two things, a good lawyer and a good alibi, ran one of his gags.Another joke referenced his rivalry with Robinson. I fought Sugar Ray so many times, its a wonder I dont have diabetes, he said.Daughter Christi LaMotta on Tuesday described her father as a great athlete, he lost his title to one of the best Middleweight Boxers in history, Sugar Ray Robinson. She revealed that his decision to throw the fight against Fox had left a lasting scar. When he took a dive during the Billy Fox fight, which he didnt want to do, it literally broke him & was never the same afterwards, she added.
