Neymar-less PSG held by Montpellier

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Paris Saint-Germain lost their perfect start to the Ligue 1 season as they struggled to a 0-0 draw at Montpellier on Saturday without the injured Neymar. With the worlds most expensive player on the sidelines to ensure his fitness for Tuesdays Champions League clash against Bayern Munich, PSG were uninspiring in attack against a stubborn Montpellier side playing in a 5-4-1 formation.Rising star Kylian Mbappe had the best of the visitors chances, but the 18-year-old was profligate in front of goal as Unai Emerys men could only extend their lead at the top of the table over reigning champions Monaco to one point.PSG started slowly as Montpellier comfortably kept them at arms length. The visitors unsurprisingly had most of the ball, but Montpellier looked a threat on the counter-attack with the pace of Claude Ninga up front.Without Neymar pulling the strings, Paris were toothless for the first 45 minutes, with some players perhaps keeping one eye on the Bayern game.PSG did finally create a decent chance shortly after the restart, as Montpellier threw away possession on the edge of their own area and Mbappe curled a tame shot straight at home goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte. The teenager, who will become the worlds second-most expensive player behind Neymar when he completes his permanent transfer from Monaco next year, should have broken the deadlock, but headed wide when unmarked from only a few yards out.Mbappe was starting to make an impact, as he raced through on goal only to scuff his shot and allow the home defence to clear.PSG coach Emery belatedly made his first change in the 66th minute with Lucas Moura replacing the ineffective Julian Draxler.Striker Edinson Cavani, who missed a penalty last week after an argument with Neymar, had an appeal for a spot-kick waved away after going down in a heap under a potentially goal-saving tackle from defender Pedro Mendes.Last seasons runners-up were left frustrated by Montpelliers organisation as they mustered only one shot on target. On Friday, Monaco had put the pressure on PSG at the summit as Radamel Falcao took his goal tally for the season to 11 with a brace in a 4-0 thrashing of Lille. The champions were barely made to sweat by their pitiful hosts, whose coach Marcelo Bielsa is now under serious pressure after a six-match winless run.

Wozniacki smashes Muguruza to reach Tokyo final

Posted:

TOKYO (AFP) - Defending champion Caroline Wozniacki pulverised world number one Garbine Muguruza 6-2, 6-0 on Saturday to reach her fourth Pan Pacific Open final. The Danish former number one will face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova as she chases a third Tokyo title after the Russian toppled Angelique Kerber 6-0, 6-7, 6-4 in a see-saw first semi-final.Top seed Muguruza, playing her first tournament since reaching the top of the womens world rankings, was blown off court in just under an hour in a stunningly lopsided match.I didnt feel that fresh, the Spaniard told reporters.I felt my energy was a little bit low and I didnt make the important shots. Im very disappointed, but she just played better.Third seed Wozniacki tore through the first set, sealing it when Muguruza wafted a routine forehand badly wide.Muguruza cut a forlorn figure as she trudged back to her seat but things went from bad to worse for the Wimbledon champion in the second set.A dipping forehand pass gave Wozniacki an early break, consolidated after another wild Muguruza backhand in the fourth game.Wozniacki, a two-time Tokyo winner and finalist in 2014, put Muguruza out of her misery by forcing the Spaniard into another whiffed backhand on match point after just 59 minutes.Seventh seed Kerber, another former world number one, looked in danger of being fed the dreaded double bagel after losing the first eight games in the Tokyo sunshine. But the German recovered from 6-0, 5-2 down to pinch the second-set tiebreak as Pavlyuchenkova suddenly tightened up, the Russian slamming her racquet to the ground in disgust.Kerber, who has slipped back to 14th in the world since winning last years Australian and US Open titles, clinched the breaker 7-4 with a fierce serve down the middle. The 29-year-old Kerber, a former Tokyo finalist, then quickly raced to a 3-0 lead in the deciding set, only to be pegged back once more. But Pavlyuchenkova seized the decisive break in the seventh game with a superb backhand drive volley, the same bludgeoning shot she unleashed to seal victory after a little over two hours.

6.1 magnitude quake rattles traumatised Mexico

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - A new quake sowed panic in Mexico City on Saturday, suspending rescue operations to free survivors from the earlier, more powerful earthquake this week that devastated parts of the capital. The seismic disturbance, with a magnitude of 6.1, was smaller and farther to the south than the 7.1-magnitude one that struck on Tuesday, killing nearly 300 people and toppling 39 buildings in the capital. But as an alarm sounded, hundreds of residents raced out into the street, some barefoot, some carrying children.Trauma from the previous quake was evident.Oh God, have mercy, exclaimed Teresa Martinez, 74, who had run out in to the street for safety. She stood with other women, all crying. Two women died of heart attacks as they tried to evacuate their homes, according to local media reports. One was in her 80s and the other was 52, according to the website of the daily Reforma. The quake rattled crockery and made buildings sway, but some didnt notice. This time we didnt feel the ground move... maybe since the last one were getting used to them, said Pablo Martinez, who had run out of his central apartment block with his 6-year-old daughter in his arms.Added riskThe new tremor sparked concern it could have caused heavy rubble on top of survivors awaiting rescue in the capital to shift -- posing a danger both to those trapped and to rescuers.Mexican and foreign rescue crews rapidly evacuated five sites in the capital where they had been working.Crews hesitated for a couple of hours, discussing the added risk, before going back in to look for survivors. The US Geological Survey initially registered the quake at 6.2 magnitude, but later lowered it to a 6.1. It struck at 12:53 GMT with an epicenter 18 kilometers (11.6 miles) southeast of the city of Matias Romero, in the southern state of Oaxaca.A bridge near the town of Juchitan collapsed, however, with television images showing it severed and buckled.Race to find survivorsIn Mexico City, anxious families have been carrying out vigils at the flattened sites where their missing relatives were when Tuesdays quake hit. They have been urging exhausted emergency workers to keep trying to reach them, despite the 72-hour window for likely survival to have closed.A lot of time has passed (since Tuesdays quake). But we wont give up, the civil protection service, Luis Felipe Puente, said.Time has gotten the best of us. There are structures that are very complicated to access. But were going to keep fighting for the families, he told TV network Televisa.Psychologists dispatched to the scene were already preparing to help relatives deal with tragic news. The families are still hopeful, but we psychologists are starting to prepare ourselves to counsel them in the context of mourning, said Penelope Exzacarias, who was on standby at a collapsed office building in Mexico Citys trendy Roma neighborhood. Some 70 people were at work in the building when the 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck. Only 28 have made it out alive so far -- all in the first hours. Many Mexicans remember miracle rescues a week after a 1985 quake that killed more than 10,000 people in the capital, spurring hopes that people might yet be pulled out alive.Rising death tollIn all likelihood, however, the death toll will rise above the latest figure of 295.Mexico City recorded the highest number of fatalities: 157, with more bodies certain to be found. The rest of the deaths occurred in the states of Morelos, Mexico, Puebla, Guerrero and Oaxaca. The toll includes eight foreigners: four Taiwanese, a Korean, a Spaniard, a Panamanian and an Argentine, authorities said.Several countries, including the United States, Israel, Japan, Panama and EU states have sent crews to help the rescue effort. At the building in the Roma district, Jose Gutierrez, father of one of those trapped, and also a civil engineer, warned that the structure is at risk of total collapse.Saturdays new quake escalated those fears. In the south of Mexico City, at a flattened school where 19 children died, white wreaths lay out, testimony to the mourning of relatives and neighbors.Families were starting to hold funerals. One of the first was that of Gabriel Morales and Agueda Mendoza, a married couple found locked in embrace under the rubble along with their dog Quino.I remember them as such a united, loving couple, said Juan Carlos Williams, their nephew.

KARACHI (Dunya News) – Mutahida Qaumi Movemenet (MQM) on Saturday asked Mian Ateeq Ahmad Shaikh for clarification about his support for Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Senate vote, reported Dunya News.According to MQM sources, Mian Ateeq’s vote was a complete misunderstanding; it doesn’t necessarily show MQM’s policy. Earlier, on Friday PML-N was able to pass an electoral reform bill in Senate which allowed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to be the leader of PML-N.MQM chief Dr. Farooq Sattar, however, said that MQM will take appropriate action against Mian Ateeq. “If an MNA is disqualified, he can’t participate in general politics, how can he be a political party’s leader,” he questioned. However, at the time of the vote, three out of four senators of MQM were absent which raises different questions.

Saudi Arabia marks national day with fireworks, concerts

Posted:

RIYADH (AFP) - With iconic buildings bathed in green light and planned cultural shows, concerts and fireworks, Saudi Arabia geared up to celebrate the anniversary of the founding of the kingdom on Saturday.Car stereos blared patriotic songs as citizens began racing through the streets of the capital Riyadh at midnight in cars bedecked with the national flag to mark the annual event in the kingdom, founded in the 1930s.The national day celebration coincides with a crucial time for Saudi Arabia, which is in a battle for regional influence with arch-rival Iran, bogged down in a controversial military intervention in neighbouring Yemen and at loggerheads with fellow US Gulf ally Qatar. On this great occasion, we feel that the kingdom has become an important state with a pioneering role at the regional and international levels, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a speech cited by the official Saudi Press Agency. The 32-year-old prince is set to be the first millennial to occupy the throne in a country where half the population is under 25, though the timing of his ascension remains unknown.Already viewed as the de facto ruler controlling all the major levers of government, from defence to economy, the prince is seen as stamping out traces of internal dissent before any formal transfer of power from his 81-year-old father King Salman.Authorities this month arrested around two dozen people, including influential clerics, in what activists decried as a coordinated crackdown.Analysts say many of those detained are resistant to Prince Mohammeds aggressive foreign policy that includes the boycott of Gulf neighbour Qatar as well as some of his bold reforms, dubbed Vision 2030, which include privatising state assets and cutting subsidies. The kingdom is an active member in the G20, the worlds strongest 20 economies, and is keen to achieve the kingdoms Vision 2030 that represents the beginning of a new phase of hard work for a better future, with the same Islamic values, Mohammed said in his speech. The kingdoms General Entertainment Authority is hosting 27 events across 17 cities to celebrate national day, including concerts, laser shows and firework displays. The main highlight will be a cultural event at the King Fahd stadium in Riyadh, where women have been invited for the first time to attend celebrations with their families, opening up a previously male-only venue. This marks a shift from previous celebrations in the kingdom where women are effectively barred from sports arenas by strict rules on segregation of the sexes in public.Saudi Arabia has some of the worlds tightest restrictions on women and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive. But the government appears to be relaxing some norms as part of its Vision 2030 plan for economic and social reforms. It has cautiously begun introducing entertainment, including music concerts, despite opposition from Muslim hardliners in the kingdom, where public cinemas and theatre are banned.

LONDON: (AFP) - In-form striker Harry Kane said Tottenham Hotspur breathed a sigh of relief after holding off West Hams spirited fightback to claim a 3-2 win at the London Stadium on Saturday.Kanes first-half double put Spurs in control and Christian Eriksen looked to have wrapped up the points on the hour mark before the Hammers hit back strongly.Javier Hernandez headed home after 65 minutes and Spurs right-back Serge Aurier was then sent off for a second bookable offence shortly afterwards to make it a nervy finish.Cheikhou Kouyate reduced West Hams deficit further with three minutes remaining but Tottenham held on to extend their unbeaten run to six games in all competitions.Yeah (it was a relief). Obviously when youre 3-0 up in a game and you end up going to 3-2 its always a bit nerve-racking, especially when youre down to 10 men, Kane told Sky Sports. It is a fantastic result away from home. Obviously going 3-0 up we would have liked to have seen it out a bit better, but a win is a win and were delighted with it.The win lifts Tottenham to third in the table behind the two Manchester clubs ahead of a clutch of afternoon matches.
