Stokes back with a bang as Anderson landmark delayed

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ben Stokes took his Test-best figures as the all-rounders six-wicket haul kept England spearhead James Anderson waiting for a landmark success on a dramatic start to the series finale against the West Indies at Lords on Thursday.A capacity crowd had gathered at the home of cricket in the hope of seeing Anderson becoming the first Englishman to take 500 Test wickets. He moved to within one of the milestone by taking the first two West Indies wickets to fall on the first day of the third and final Test. But instead it was all-rounder Stokes who then did most damage as West Indies were shot out for 123, with the Durham paceman taking six for 22 in a near unplayable and unbroken 14.3 over spell of fast swing bowling spanning two hours either side of tea.Yet that was far from the end of the wicket-taking spree, with England slumping to 46 for four in reply -- a deficit of 77 runs -- before bad light eventually ended play for the day to leave the match intriguingly poised with the series all square at 1-1.Stokess return saw him become just the sixth England cricketer to put himself on both Lords honours board that record all those who have scored hundreds and taken five wickets in an innings -- or 10 in a match -- in a Test at headquarters. When Stokes, who had only taken 10 wickets in six previous Tests this season, was asked if this was his best performance with the ball he replied: Yes, I think so.It was obviously swinging when I got the ball in my hands -- and when it does swing like that, its a good opportunity just to run up and know its going to do something, the 26-year-old added.England captain Joe Root, who had only allowed Stokes five overs in the second innings at Headingley last week as West Indies won by five wickets, was happy to let his old friend keep going on Thursday.Rooty let me bowl for a long time, which I quite enjoy doing, Stokes, who will resume on 13 not out on Friday, said.Jimmy and I were a bit confused at one point, because he came to take his stuff off but I already had my hat and jumper off -- and Joe just said Oh, keep going. Then after that, he just told me Keep going after the break as well.Stokes paid tribute to the guidance he had received from England bowling coach and former West Indies paceman Ottis Gibson. This is Gibsons last match in his second spell with Englands backroom staff before he becomes the new head coach of South Africa. The hard work contributes towards success, which is why I gave a little wave up to Gibbo -- hes helped me over the last six or seven weeks, said Stokes.Hes put loads of hours in with technical stuff, bowling in the mornings. If it wasnt for him, Im not sure Id have had a day like I did today.Obviously at Lords, the home of cricket, to be on one honours board (is great) ... no one can take it away from you -- and Ill always be able to say Im on there through batting and bowling..West Indies batting coach Toby Radford, an Englishman who played county cricket for Lords-based Middlesex, said Stokes had bowled exceptionally. It was difficult for people coming to the wicket with him bowling such an inspired spell, with the ball swinging prodigiously both ways, he added.

Lyon spin gives Australia crushing win over Bangladesh

CHITTAGONG (AFP) - Nathan Lyon spun Australia to a series-levelling win over Bangladesh on Thursday with a 13-wicket match haul in the second and final Test.Chasing 86 for victory on a deteriorating Chittagong pitch, the visitors lost their top three batsmen before completing a seven-wicket win in the final session of the fourth day.Glenn Maxwell, who hit the winning six to take his score to 25, and Peter Handscomb, on 16, helped Australia bounce back from their loss in Dhaka last week.Bangladesh had been on a high after their historic first Test win over Australia. But Lyon brought them back to earth with a bump. The off-spinner, who received the man of the match award, set up the win for Steve Smiths side after returning career-best match figures of 13-154.Lyon claimed a third successive six-wicket haul to dismiss Bangladesh for 157 in their second innings. He took his series tally to 22 wickets, the most by an Australian bowler in a two-match contest.Opener David Warner also stood out with two successive centuries in the series including 123 in Australias first innings that helped secure a crucial 72-run lead.We played some good cricket at times. To restrict them to what we did in the first innings was great. There wasnt a great deal in the surface for Lyon, but he was remarkable, Smith said of Lyons 7-94 that helped restrict Bangladesh to 305 in the first innings.I think he took 22 wickets for the series so that was a really good effort... But credit to Bangladesh, they really made us fight throughout the series, he added. The hosts had bowled out Australia for 377 in the first innings, preventing their visitors from adding a run Thursday morning to the overnight total and restricting their lead to 72.But Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim said his batsmen were not good enough after electing to bat first.Credit to Australia. The wicket was pretty good to bat on, we missed out in the first innings. Thats what cost us. We shouldve got 350 at least, said Mushfiqur.Win or lose, there are a lot of areas of improvements. Our batsmen made things tough for themselves, hopefully well learn, he added.Mushfiqur managed a top score of 31 off 103 balls in Bangladeshs second innings. But none of the other batsmen could cope with a pitch that brought joy to Lyon.Bangladesh started the day on a high, dismissing number 11 batsman Lyon in the second over of the day.But Lyon returned to pick up further wickets as Bangladesh slipped to 83-5 at lunch.A 54-run sixth-wicket stand between Mushfiqur and Sabbir Rahman steadied the innings briefly but an unrelenting Lyon had Sabbir stumped for 24.Mushfiqur fell to fast bowler Pat Cummins after being caught behind, leaving his side in dire straits.Cummins and Steve OKeefe, who combined with Lyon to wipe off the tail in the final session of play, took two wickets each, bowling Bangladesh out for 157 and leaving Australia requiring just 86 to win. With meagre room for manoeuvre bowling in the fourth innings, Bangladesh had early success when Mustafizur Rahman dismissed Warner, who shared the man of the series award with Lyon, for eight.Spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Taijul Islam then took the wickets of Steve Smith for 16 and Matt Renshaw for 22 to leave Australia at 48-3.But Handscomb and Maxwell then dug in and saw Australia home with their unbroken 39-run stand. We all know that we havent had the best of success in the sub-continent. It was important for us to come here as a young group and stand up, said Lyon.Australia now travel to India where they will play five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches between September 17 to October 13.

Fears of World Cup without Messi as Argentina stutter

Posted:

BUENOS AIRES (AFP) - Argentinas poor run of results in the South American qualifiers has left everyone contemplating the unthinkable: a World Cup next summer without Lionel Messi. The dreaded question looms large after an uninspiring draw at home to last-placed Venezuela this week left Argentina adrift of the automatic qualifying places for Russia 2018.Veteran coach Cesar Luis Menotti described the latest performance as scary and had some choice words for coach Jorge Sampaoli, who like his predecessors is struggling with how best to use Messis verve in a team which has failed to find its spark. The truth is, it was a shock. Seeing all this was a shock I played two games against Venezuela: in Caracas we won 7-0 and in Rosario 11-0. Eighteen goals in two gamesAnd now I see that its hard for us to beat Venezuela? Theres something that were not doing well, said Menotti, who led Argentina to World Cup glory in 1978.The goals have dried up. Argentina were on a run of 309 minutes without scoring in these qualifiers when they finally got an own-goal against Venezuela.Menotti levelled most of his scorn at the tactics used by Sampaoli, the former Chile and Seville coach. I dont understand the team. Its not the same thing to lead Seville as it is Argentina. Especially if you have Messi. The diminutive 30-year-old cuts an increasingly isolated figure on the pitch, bereft of teammates who can give him the right pass at the right time, according to former Argentine international Alberto Marcico.Messi is more isolated, in the past he was better served by those around him.Messis current lieutenants, Juventus Paulo Dybala and Inter Milan captain Mauro Icardi, havent been able to provide the service the star is used to in his slick club side Barcelona, and more often than not he is crowded out by defenders waiting to pounce when the ball finally comes.Like TangoThe over-reliance on Messi is striking for Menotti, saying Sampaoli must change how Argentina use him. They use drones, they give talks, they put put fourteen guys to work and when he gets the ball, Messi bolts forward to see if he can take everyone on. Its very difficult, he said.Football is like Tango. You cant run around all the time.Football has pause. It has acceleration, it has rhythms, it has changes. The way Argentina play makes you dizzy, and thats the worst enemy of a footballer, Menotti told FoxSports. For commentator and former player Diego Latorre, Argentinas problems go deeper than Messi.Psychological issues play a very important role in how a game develops, and this team still has a block in its nervous system that cant be turned off.Argentinas priceless forward line is too easily shepherded down blind alleys, playing like a pack of hungry wolves without teeth who finish up meekly in a corral after 90 minutes, Latorre wrote in the daily La Nacion.Aside for an over-reliance on Messi, the team has a heavy psychological burden to bear. They lost three finals, and thats heavy, said Marcico, referring to the 2014 World Cup final -- lost to Germany in extra-time -- and successive Copa America finals in 2015 and 2016.Now, Argentina have just two matches to redeem themselves, hosting fourth-placed Peru in Buenos Aires next month before an awkward final match away to Ecuador at altitude. The top four in the table qualify for next years finals, which the fifth-placed team will face a play-off with New Zealand.Former national coach Marcelo Bielsa, now with Lille in France, remains confident that Argentina will prevail in their two remaining matches.I am absolutely convinced that Argentina will qualify, he said. But the fear remains that the burden of a nations expectations can crush the best of talents, and leave mighty Argentina without a place at a World Cup finals for the first time since Mexico 1970.And it could also leave the world without the spectacle of arguably its greatest player slaloming through defences in Russia next July, depriving him of one last chance to crown his career with ultimate football glory.

Premier League to close transfer window before season

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - English Premier League clubs voted on Thursday to close the 2018 close-season transfer window before the start of the 2018-19 campaign.Following complaints by managers that transfer activity disturbs their preparations, Premier League clubs will not be able to register new players after 1600 GMT on the Thursday before the season starts. The transfer window in Europes other major leagues runs until August 31, meaning clubs outside England could buy players from English top-flight teams after the new Premier League deadline. The move was announced following a meeting of Premier League club officials and is not believed to have been agreed unanimously.Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger gave his backing to the decision before it was announced.Even in the games, you sit there before the games and even in players minds they have no clarity, he told reporters at his weekly press conference. Are they in? Are they out? Are they half in? Are they half out? Are they tapped up in the afternoon of the game by people who want to get them out? Its not the way to work and its uncomfortable.Every single manager in the league would agree that its time to kick that out before the season starts and not continue to have players in the dressing room who are half out and half in.Englands Football League -- the second, third and fourth tiers -- is not affected by the move.Premier League clubs spent a record $1.8 billion (1.5 billion euros) on new players during the 2017 close-season window. The window closed last Thursday, three weeks after the new season had started. But Handscomb and Maxwell then dug in and saw Australia home with their unbroken 39-run stand.Australia now travel to India where they will play five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches between September 17 to October 13.
