Russian defence minister visits Assad ahead of Syrian offensive

Posted:

MOSCOW (AFP) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad welcomed Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to Damascus on Tuesday as Syrian forces supported by the Russian army prepare to make a final push into parts of the eastern city of Deir Ezzor.Shoigu gave a letter from Russian President Vladimir Putin to Assad congratulating him on lifting the siege imposed by Islamic State terrorists in the city of Deir Ezzor, according to a statement by the Syrian presidency.Last week Syrian troops, backed by Russian airstrikes, broke the siege of two enclaves in and around Deir Ezzor, which had been encircled by jihadists for nearly three years. An unwavering ally of Assads regime, Russia militarily intervened in the Syrias six-year conflict in September 2015 when the government was in trouble in its fight against rebels and jihadist groups. The Damascus regime has had many victories since and now controls nearly all Syrias main cities. The loss of Deir Ezzor would be a major blow to the jihadist group, whose territory in Syria and neighbouring Iraq has been shrinking.Shoigu and Assad, who last met in June 2016 in Damascus, discussed their military and tactical cooperation... for the destruction of the Islamic State group in Syria, a statement from the Russian defence ministry said.According to the Syrian president, the meeting emphasised the importance of the Astana process, with a new round of peace talks scheduled on Thursday and Friday aiming to strengthen de-escalation zones meant to allow the establishment of a lasting ceasefire in Syria. In a statement issued Tuesday, the Russian army claimed that more than 450 IS fighters had been killed in the Deir Ezzor offensive.Only yesterday, the Russian airforce carried out more than 50 flights to help the Syrian armys offensive, the statement said.

Trump says North Korea sanctions just the beginning

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President Donald Trump on Tuesday described the latest batch of UN-backed sanctions against North Korea as a very small step that must lead to tougher measures.Sustaining a tough tone in the face of North Koreas missile and nuclear weapons tests, Trump indicated that he would continue to press for sanctions designed to make the regime recalculate its strategy. We think its just another very small step - not a big deal, Trump said of the sanctions agreed Monday evening. The Security Council unanimously slapped a ban on textile exports and restricted shipments of oil products to punish Pyongyang for its sixth and largest nuclear test. The measures stopped well short of an oil embargo that Washington had been seeking, but which is opposed by China. Those sanctions are nothing compared to ultimately what will have to happen, Trump said, indicating he would continue to press Beijing. Its nice to get a 15 to nothing vote, he added.

Pakistan celebrates international revival with win

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistan Tuesday took a giant step towards reviving international cricket at home with a 20-run victory over the World XI in a match before excited crowds amid tight security. The Twenty20 match, accorded international status by the International Cricket Council, is the first game of only the second series Pakistan has hosted since militants attacked the bus of the visiting Sri Lankan team in March 2009, killing eight people and injuring seven players and staff.Long before it began at 7:00pm (1400GMT), around 9,000 police officers and paramilitary forces were deployed to the area, cordoning off the teams hotels and stadium. But the large security presence did little to temper the enthusiasm of fans in the cricket-mad country.I came here early to watch the teams come but that was not possible due to security so I only watched them in the ground and it made my day, said spectator Azfar Ali.Pakistan, sent into bat by World XI skipper Faf du Plessis, notched 197-5 with Babar Azam hitting a rapid 52-ball 86. His career best Twenty20 score had ten boundaries and two sixes.Azam added 122 for the second wicket with Ahmed Shehzad (39) as Pakistan built on the loss of opener Fakhar Zaman for eight.Shoaib Malik smashed a 20-ball 38 with two sixes and four boundaries to give the final touches to the innings. The World XI started off well with Tamim Iqbal hitting 18 with three boundaries and Hashim Amla smashing three boundaries and a six in his 17-ball 26 but left-arm pacer Rumman Raees dismissed both in the same over to put the brakes on their innings.Skipper Faf du Plessis hit four boundaries and a six while Darren Sammy smashed three sixes -- both scoring 29 -- but were unable to see their team through. For Pakistan, paceman Sohail Khan and leg-spinner Shadab Khan finished with two wickets apiece.World XI skipper du Plessis blamed his dismissal for the teams loss.I needed to get a 50 or 60 for us to win, he said, adding that it was great to play in front of the Pakistani fans.Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed thanked the crowd. It was a historic occasion and I thank the crowd for coming in good numbers, said Ahmed. It was a very important match and I think no praise is too high for our players, especially Azam. The second game is on Wednesday and the third on Friday -- both in Lahore.Du Plessis said it would be a quick turnaround, I dont think Ive ever played two T20s in two days.Pakistan hopes the series will showcase an improved security situation as it seeks to entice other foreign opponents. Sri Lanka are due to play a Twenty20 in October, and will be followed by the West Indies who are due to play a mini-series of three Twenty20s in November.Tuesday marked the first time that five of the Pakistan players -- Ashraf, Zaman, Shadab, Raees and Hasan Ali -- played an international match on home soil.

West Indies look to recalled Gayle for ODI inspiration

Posted:

BELFAST (AFP) - The recall of Chris Gayle to the West Indies ODI squad, for the first time since the 2015 World Cup, has dominated the countdown to the upcoming five-match series against England. But Gayle -- one of the biggest draws in the game -- is likely to make his first appearance against Ireland on Wednesday.Gayle arrived with the 15-man squad in Northern Ireland on Monday after the West Indies board announced an amnesty which has also seen the return of Marlon Samuels and Jerome Taylor.Previously players had to be available for the corresponding domestic tournament before being selected for limited-overs internationals or Test cricket.Samuels last played in October 2016, but was dropped for the tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe the following month, but while Gayle played in the one-off T20 game against India in July, his next ODI will be his first since the 2015 World Cup.Taylors last ODI was in July 2016.The panel welcomes back Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels, who will both add value to our batting and help with the nurturing of the young batsmen in the team, said chairman of selectors Courtney Browne. The selectors will also hope the experienced pair -- Samuels is 36 and Gayle celebrates his 38th birthday on the day of the second ODI against England next week -- can help West Indies qualify for the next World Cup.But unless they beat Ireland and then win four of the five games against England they will find themselves in the qualifying tournament next March, along with Ireland, Afghanistan and hosts Zimbabwe.Only two qualifiers will join the top eight in the rankings at the end of this month at the 2019 finals in England. After his selection, Gayle confirmed he wanted to play in the finals. The fans were happy to see me back on the field representing West Indies, said Gayle.Hopefully, things can get better. Hopefully I can play a few more games.I definitely want to play the 2019 World Cup.Things are beginning to open up a little more now between players and the board. Its looking good, and weve to try and build from this to get the best players out on the field.Only six of the Test squad that has just completed the three-match series in England are staying on for the white-ball action - which also includes a one-off T20 against England on Saturday - but Roston Chase is the only player dropped from the squad that lost 3-1 to India in the home series in July.If the weather allows -- and the West Indies arrived in Belfast in rain and more is forecast for the next 48 hours -- they should gain a morale-boosting win against the newest Full Member, who have failed to win any of their last nine games. It is also the beginning of the end of John Bracewells two-year reign as Ireland coach. The New Zealander steps down in December and will be succeeded by former South Africa and Sri Lanka coach Graham Ford, who was appointed on a three-year contract last week.Ford will not be at the match but the players know their performances will be scrutinized by the new coach and, with the likelihood of facing West Indies in the World Cup qualifiers, long-serving captain William Porterfield, who has a virtual full-strength side, said: We want to lay down a marker.

Shakib defends decision to skip Tests

Posted:

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladeshs Shakib Al Hasan, the worlds leading all-rounder, Tuesday defended his decision to play in limited-overs games while skipping Test cricket, saying he needs a break from the longest format to extend his career.Shakib will sit out two Test matches during the upcoming tour of South Africa after asking his board for a six-month break from Tests. The 30-year-old will however be available for the three one-day internationals and two Twenty20 games during his countrys first tour of South Africa since 2008.I get surprised when people ask me why I dont take a break from one-day or Twenty20 internationals or from the foreign T20 league, he told reporters. When I play foreign T20 leagues I feel hardly any pressure. For me they are a kind of holiday. Of course, they give me some experience. Financial side is also important. But in Test match, I have to bat and bowl and contribute in all four innings. The team also expects me to do that. Its not good if I cannot give my hundred per cent.Shakib is a regular at franchise-based Twenty20 tournaments around the world, and earned $712,000 from four Twenty20 competitions in 2016, according to Bangladeshs Daily Star.He has played every Test for Bangladesh since missing two games against the West Indies in 2014 because of a suspension. His request for the Test break came amid concerns over player fatigue, as well as criticism that players are prioritising earnings over representing their countries.Shakib said the break from Test cricket would help him refresh and prolong his career. The biggest reason is I think I have still plenty of cricket left, Shakib said.If I want to play that amount of cricket and play it well, I think this break is essential for me.I can play now if I wish. But I have to decide whether I want play five to six more years or just one to two years. I personally feel if I continue this way, I would not be able to play more than one or two years.I dont want to play just for the sake of playing. That is why, I think if I get this break, I can refresh myself, more mentally than physically, and play five or six years without any tension. He thanked the Bangladesh Cricket Board profusely for granting him the break. If I go to South Africa after two Test matches, I will get a break of about a month. I havent got this kind of a break in the last three or four years, he said.Shakib starred in Bangladeshs maiden Test win over Australia last month, claiming 10 wickets in the match and scoring 84 in one innings.

Aussies will have advantage in India, says Clarke

Posted:

NEW DELHI (AFP) - Former skipper Michael Clarke said Tuesday the Australians would likely upstage hosts India in the upcoming one-day series thanks to their stints with the Indian Premier League. The Steve Smith-led side, which lost the Test series 2-1 to India earlier this year, will play five ODIs, with the first in Chennai on Sunday.Smith captained the Pune franchise in the last edition of the cash-rich IPL, arguably the worlds most popular Twenty20 tournament.Players like David Warner, Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Pat Cummins have had successful IPL stints and Clarke said the team should have no excuses in the shorter format. Its not just the wicket you are batting on or the ground you are playing, its the heat, the food you eat, the hotel your are staying at, Clarke told reporters.(With) these players now being involved in the IPL, India is like a second home because you spend so much time here.Yes, its a shame we dont have Mitchell Starc or Josh Hazlewood available unfortunately due to injury. Those two will be missed. But this Australian team has no excuses. They know the conditions really well... and this is a massive series for us, he said, predicting a 3-2 win for the visitors.Clarke saw a carrot right there for the Australians, who will topple South Africa from top spot in the ODI table if they beat India 4-1.The cricketer turned commentator also praised Virat Kohlis fearless captaincy that has helped India dominate with their aggressive approach.India not only regained their number one Test spot under Kohli last year but recently blanked hosts Sri Lanka 9-0 across all three formats.I think this team has certainly got that aggression in them... they are led by an aggressive captain. Seems to me that Virat is not scared to lose and thats a great advantage, said Clarke.Indian batting great VVS Laxman, who was also present at the event, said he did not foresee any controversy in the ODI series. In the Test series Kohli had expressed his displeasure after Smith looked up to his dressing room while deciding whether to review his lbw dismissal in the Bangalore match, and a war of words erupted between the two captains. They are not only two modern-day captains but two modern-day greats. In such a short span of time the impact these two players have had on international cricket is just amazing, said Laxman, who made a match-winning 281 against Australia in the epic 2001 Kolkata Test. And I think when you are playing international cricket its not necessary to be friendly on field... I am sure both will go all out and be aggressive and win the matches for their team... They are both trendsetters according to me, he said.Laxman picked India to win with a 4-1 scoreline.

FM discussed Trump's statement in Russia, Iran, Turkey, China: PM

ISLAMABAD (APP): Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi Tuesday said Pakistan was more committed than any other country in the region for peaceful resolution of the Afghan issue.Pakistan had suffered massively due to instability in Afghanistan and believed that the solution should be Afghan-led and Afghan-owned, he told a group of foreign media representatives during an interaction here at the PM Office. The prime minister reiterated that Pakistan was open to close cooperation with the United States as their ties were decades old and could not be defined on the basis of one issue – Afghan issue. The issue of terrorism, of course, was a matter of concern for Pakistan as well, it had done most in addressing it, he said and added, “We had defeated it.” He told the media men to visit Miran Shah and see for themselves how Pakistan’s military had cleared the area by offering sacrifices. The prime minister strongly rejected allegations about terrorists’ sanctuaries inside Pakistan and said the North Waziristan shared the same terrain with the border areas of Afghanistan but questioned what the International SecurityAssistance Force (ISAF) had achieved there. He said that Pakistan was open to bilateral verifications and joint patrols. It had fenced its border with Afghanistan and would welcome if they did the same on their side. The other side also required to address Pakistan’s concerns regarding presence of terrorists, attacking Pakistani border areas, he emphasised. The prime minister said much more was happening from other side of the border and vehemently rejected the perception that attacks took place from Pakistan’s territory, terming such allegations ‘completely incorrect’.He said the leadership [of militants] was based in Afghanistan. He told that Pakistan had hosted 3.5 million Afghan refugees. “We have even offered training to the Afghan forces to come here and train themselves to fight terrorism,” he added. He said his government’s mandate was to complete the initiatives taken by Mohammad Nawaz Sharif. To another question, the prime minister opined that democratic system in the country was being strengthened with the passage of time. The prime minister strongly rejected that democracy could be derailed in the country and said the intensity and relevancy regarding debate about the system could increase but ultimately, it would be resolved.About the BRICS declaration, the prime minister said the statement was not specific to Pakistan. There was no difference in the policy of Pakistani and Chinese governments, he added.About going back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he said the government had successfully completed the IMF programme with minimal inflation. The prime minister did not foresee to go to the IMF and hoped that the government would achieve its economic targets with prudent economic policies. He said the biggest achievement of the present government was to minimize inflation rate. He said the government would be able to address the economic challenges and its intention was to proceed with its own growth rate.Challenges were always there but the government was addressing the same, the prime minister said, adding the stock exchange would hopefully go up in the coming days.He said the current economic issues were definitely a challenge but “we are addressing it.” The prime minister said the devaluation of rupee was not on the card. “We are broadening our tax net base and have a composite plan to provide incentives to the tax filers.”To a question about ups and downs in the Pak-US relations, he said there was economic, political and military relationship between the two countries. He said the US had not clarified some of the perceptions that were raised after President Trump’s policy statement on Afghanistan and South Asia.He said that Pakistan needed more collaborations and cooperation between the two countries in various areas rather than aid and assistance. He added that Pakistan was a huge market and the US companies had multi-billion opportunities here.Prime Minister Abbasi said Pakistan and the US had a very valuable relationship since start of the diplomatic ties between the two countries“We intend to work and cooperate with the US against terrorism and if both the countries have any concern it should be addressed,” the prime minister said. “We respect other’s sovereignty and expect the same from others.”About Pakistan-India tension at the Line of Control, he said that Pakistan had always welcomed efforts to have a peaceful relationship and wanted to resolve it peacefully through dialogue. He said that Pakistan had lost more than $120 billion in the war against terrorism, besides the world community must recognize its sacrifices.Regarding Foreign Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif’s visits to four countries after Trump’s statement, the prime minister said the miniter was visiting major capitals of the world where Mr Trump’s statement would also come under discussions with the leadership of those countries. To a question about Pakistan’s mediation with Gulf countries, he said, “We look upon it as a family issue that needs to be resolved between two brothers.”

Leipzig relishing Champions League debut

LEIPZIG (AFP) - Just eight years after starting life in the local leagues, RB Leipzig will enhance their rags to riches tale on Wednesday by hosting Monaco on the German clubs Champions League debut.Backed by energy drinks giant Red Bull, who bought the licence of a fifth-division club, Leipzig began climbing Germanys football pyramid in 2009.They are widely unpopular with German fans, due to the commercialism they represent, but after four promotions in seven years they finished second last season in the Bundesliga to qualify directly for a Champions League place.Leipzig make their debut against last seasons semi-finalists Monaco at the Red Bull Arena and director of sport Ralf Rangnick is proud of their achievement. When you think we were still in the fourth division five years ago, then the Champions League is another promotion, said Rangnick.Something like that has never happened before and most likely wont happen again in the next 50 years. This is a step into the unknown for Leipzig with only four members of their squad having Champions League experience.Swedish playmaker Emil Forsberg, plus new-signings Bruma, Jean-Kevin Augustin and Kevin Kampl are the only ones to have played at this level. The quartet have a combined tally of 31 Champions League appearances. In contrast, 17 of the Monaco squad have 236 Champions League appearances between them and last seasons semi-final defeat by Juventus is still fresh in the memory.- Massive occasion -======================But Leipzig coach Ralph Hasenhuettl sees his teams lack of experience as an advantage. We want to create a surprise, said the Austrian on Tuesday. We dont want to just turn up, we want to leave our mark. They are a team who have a lot of quality and arent easy to play against.Rangnick is confident of a winning start to their maiden campaign. If we can show our full power on the pitch, then we are capable of winning, insisted the RB boss. This is the first time for nearly 29 years that European football will be played in the former East German city.We can sense the buzz all over town. It will be a massive occasion, for the club and for our fans, said captain Willi Orban.Tomorrow, a dream will come true for all of us. It will be an emotional moment when the anthem plays. The last time a team from the city played in Europe, Diego Maradonas Napoli drew 1-1 at Lokomotive Leipzig, on October 26 1988 in the second round of the UEFA Cup.Fast-forward to Wednesday and Monaco will want to bounce back after being beaten 4-0 by neighbours Nice last weekend in their first defeat of the season after four straight wins to start their Ligue 1 title defence. It was the first time they have failed to score in 37 top-flight games.Leipzig are set to welcome back Forsberg, who missed Fridays 2-0 Bundesliga win at Hamburg with a cold. However, Liverpool-bound midfielder Naby Keita, who scored a superb opening goal at Hamburg, is set to miss out after picking up a groin strain. He had to break off training and he probably wont be able to play, explained Hasenhuettl.In-form striker Timo Werner, who has scored five goals in his last four games and has been linked with Real Madrid, will lead the attack.Monaco are missing France international winger Thomas Lemar through injury.
