War of words ratchets up between Kim and Trump

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - An escalating war of words between Donald Trump and Kim Jong-Un ratcheted up a notch on Friday as the US president dubbed North Koreas leader a madman, a day after the reclusive regime hinted it may explode a hydrogen bomb over the Pacific Ocean.Hours earlier, in a rare personal attack, Kim took aim at Trump, branding him mentally deranged and a dotard, and warning he would pay dearly for his threat to destroy North Korea if challenged, uttered before the United Nations General Assembly. The verbal clash came a day after Washington announced tougher sanctions aimed at curbing North Koreas nuclear and ballistic missile program, on the heels of a Trump speech in which he which he nicknamed Kim Rocket Man and declared him to be on a suicide mission.Kim Jong Un of North Korea, who is obviously a madman who doesnt mind starving or killing his people, will be tested like never before Trump posted early Friday in the first of a barrage of unrelated tweets.Kim had delivered a tongue-lashing of his own -- vowing to surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire, in an address read out on state television by a star news anchor before a still image of Kim at his desk.Trump insulted me and my country in front of the eyes of the world and made the most ferocious declaration of a war in history, Kim said, according to the official Korean Central News Agency.I will make the man holding the prerogative of the supreme command in the US pay dearly for his speech.Russia and China have both appealed for an end to the escalating rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang, and Moscows Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov complained that that scrap resembled a kindergarten fight between children. We have to calm down the hot heads and understand that we do need pauses, that we do need some contacts, Lavrov told a news conference after his address to the General Assembly. On the fringes of the world meeting, North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho told reporters Pyongyang might now consider detonating a hydrogen bomb outside its territory.I think that it could be an H-bomb test at an unprecedented level perhaps over the Pacific, he said -- while adding: It is up to our leader so I do not know well.Washington on Thursday authorized a tough new raft of sanctions in the latest effort to tighten the screws on Pyongyang over its banned weapons programs, following its sixth nuclear test -- the largest yet -- and the firing of two missiles over Japan in recent weeks.Trumps executive order, which prohibits firms from operating in the United States if they deal with North Korea, came after the UN Security Council agreed its own further set of sanctions aimed at reducing Pyongyangs ability to trade with the outside world. But analysts say the sanctions show no signs of working, and cautioned that the increasingly ill-tempered and personal exchanges between Washington and Pyongyang did not augur well. There are some very dangerous things that could come that move this from theater to reality. This is the time to be heading them off, not making them feel inevitable, said John Delury of Yonsei University in Seoul.Washington has refused to offer incentives to bring Pyongyang to the negotiating table, despite appeals to do so from China and Russia, who are both uneasy over Trumps bellicose tone. However in a meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Trump suggested the door to dialogue remained open. Why not? he said, when asked whether there could be talks with Pyongyang.China wields the most influence on North Korea, providing an economic lifeline. But it also fears the consequences if the regime collapses, such as an exodus of refugees or a US-allied, reunited Korea on its border.Negotiation is the only way out and deserves every effort, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told the General Assembly. The sentiments were echoed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who said military hysteria is not just an impasse, its disaster.North Korean envoy Ri is expected to meet on Saturday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who will send out feelers on possible diplomatic talks. But Chung Sung-Yoon, analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, told AFP that the North itself may have shelved the idea of negotiations until it reaches its nuclear goal.People say this is all part of its brinkmanship strategy to force the US to come forward for negotiation. But the North is leaving too little room for the US to do so with the latest series of threats and provocations, he said.

Morgan hopes Hales, Buttler get Ashes chance

Posted:

NOTTINGHAM (AFP) - England one-day captain Eoin Morgan hopes Alex Hales and Jos Buttler have to change their schedules for the off-season by gaining selection for the Ashes tour of Australia.A things stand, limited-overs opener Hales is heading to South Africa for their new Global League Twenty20 tournament, with wicketkeeper/batsman Buttler destined for a stint in the Bangladesh Premier League. But all that could change if they are included in the Ashes squad, due to be announced on Wednesday. Both Hales and Buttler have had a taste of Test cricket without nailing down a place and neither featured in any of this seasons seven Tests at home to South Africa and West Indies. But such is the uncertainty over Englands batting, with only veteran opener Alastair Cook and skipper Joe Root currently certain of their places in the Test teams top order, that Hales could yet gain an Ashes place.Meanwhile one-day international gloveman Buttler may be on the plane to Australia as the reserve wicket-keeper behind Test incumbent Jonny Bairstow.Jos is going to Bangladesh and Alex is going to Stellenbosch in South Africa. Thats their alternative plans, said Morgan of Hales and Buttler after the washed-out second one-day international against West Indies at Trent Bridge on Thursday.Id like to see them play in an Ashes series.Ashes and World Cups are the pinnacle of our careers so to see guys playing in that format and doing well would boost confidence massively. They have a huge amount of ability in all three formats and if an opportunity presented itself in an Ashes series as opposed to a T20 league, Id say take the Ashes every time, the former Ireland international insisted.Haless first spell in the Test side ended after last years home series against Pakistan. He refused to take part in the subsequent tour of Bangladesh on security grounds, although he may well have been dropped after a run of low scores in any event.Hales scored a double century for Nottinghamshire against Derbyshire in the County Championship second division last month. That one innings, however, accounts for more than half of his total Championship runs this season.Hales though has been in superb white-ball form and there are those who believe he could yet flourish in Test cricket as a middle-order, rather than opening, batsman.I think if I was in Alexs position, Id just do as much as I can and see if I was selected, said Morgan, who will hope England can extend their 1-0 lead over West Indies when the third of a five-match ODI series takes place in Bristol on Sunday.I think its nice he has an alternative plan so its not the be-all and end-all for him to be selected for the Ashes. It takes a little bit of the weight off his shoulders. But certainly in the form hes shown throughout this summer hes got to be one of the most in-form batsmen in county cricket at the moment.

Three fast bowlers, Vernon Philander, Chris Morris and Dale Steyn, were ruled out because of injury. The 19-year-old all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, who captained South Africa Under-19 last season, will join the squad as cover for Parnell, who has to pass a fitness Test. The squad has been named for the first match only.South African squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock (wkt), Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Morne Morkel, Duanne Olivier, Wayne Parnell, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada.

'Now I'm jinxed?' jokes Zidane

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane joked Friday that he was jinxed as his injury-depleted team comes under attack for their misfiring start to this seasons La Liga title defence. So now Im jinxed, am I? the Frenchman said two days after Real suffered a shock 1-0 defeat by Real Betis. Before I was the shining star... No, no, Ive always been a shining star, dont worry.Im at this club and I make the absolute most of being here.I dont think about bad luck, thats part of football and the good news is that we have a match tomorrow. We have the chance to be able to change that quickly and well do it.In the space of just five games Real have gone from red-hot La Liga title favourites to trailing rivals Barcelona by seven points. But Zidane insisted that his team was not of the mindset that La Liga was already beyond their grip. You can have a 10 or 15-point deficit but in football there are highs and lows and you can experience bad moments and each team will experience them, the 1998 World Cup winner said.My character is that I wont scream for screamings sake or do things that are out of keeping for me.Tomorrow, we have a match in which to prove ourselves and I have a match to show that Im worthy of being in this job. When Madrid swept a crisis-ridden Barca aside 5-1 in the Spanish Super Cup last month, Zidanes men were expected to romp to the title.Instead, disappointing home draws against Valencia and Levante were compounded as Real failed to score for the first time in 74 games when Real Betis became the first side other than Barca or Atletico Madrid to win at the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga for six-and-a-half years on Wednesday.Real have also been hit by injuries, with left-back Marcelo and midfielder Toni Kroos to miss Saturdays trip to Alaves.Brazilian Marcelo will be out for three or four weeks according to Spanish sports daily As, after suffering a thigh injury against Betis.Midfielder Mateo Kovacic and striker Karim Benzema are already sidelined, with forward Borja Mayoral, 20, having played in Reals last two league matches.German international Kroos has a rib problem, but could be back for the Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund next week.He felt discomfort in his ribs again after the game and we didnt want to take any risks, Zidane said.I hope its nothing serious and hell be able to play on Tuesday. Hes in a bit of pain today and the match is tomorrow - were not going to risk it.Zidane added that he was happy to be coming up against his eldest son Enzo, who joined Alaves from Reals reserves over the summer.I hope he wont score because were competitors, him from his side and me from mine.

Ahly hope history repeats itself in Tunisia

Posted:

JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Al Ahly of Egypt coach Hossam El Badry hopes history repeats itself when they face hosts Esperance of Tunisia Saturday in a mega CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg.El Badry was in charge of the Cairo Red Devils when they shocked the Tunis Blood and Gold 2-1 in Tunisia after a drawn first leg to win the 2012 final.Last weekend, Ahly led and trailed Esperance before recent Moroccan recruit Walid Azarou equalised to leave the tie delicately balanced at 2-2 on aggregate. While the odds have shortened on an overall Esperance victory, El Badry was optimistic ahead of what is being labelled the final before the final given the status of the clubs.Ahly are the most successful club in CAF competitions with 19 titles and Esperance have won five.Nothing has been decided, stressed El Badry. Our approach must be balanced. We cannot just defend and we dare not attack with abandon either. I trust my players and their capabilities.Victory for either side at the 60,000-seat Stade Olympique in Tunis secures a semi-final date with Etoile Sahel of Tunisia or Al Ahly Tripoli of Libya.A 0-0 or 1-1 draw and Esperance qualify, another 2-2 deadlock takes the tie to penalties, and a stalemate involving six or more goals sends Ahly through.Esperance have won three of four home matches en route to the last eight and drawn with title-holders Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.Record eight-time Champions League title-holders Ahly won only once on the road in four matches and failed to score in three of them.Esperance boast a consistent scorer in six-goal Taha Yassine Khenissi while no one from Ahly has managed more than two.Sundowns were the only first-leg winners, edging Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 1-0 near Pretoria through a goal from Ivorian Yannick Zakri. The South Africans have been reportedly angered by dirty tricks since arriving in the north African kingdom with no training facilities provided and inadequate transport.Sundowns officials took two days to secure a practice pitch and hired a bus rather than use what an official called an old grey stinky one offered by Wydad.USM Alger of Algeria have scored 11 CAF goals at home this season and Ferroviario Beira of Mozambique have conceded 11 on the road. Those statistics, coupled with 2015 runners-up USM forcing a 1-1 draw at Ferroviario last weekend, make the Algerians firm favourites to progress.Etoile must do without Brazilian striker Diogo Acosta after he was red-carded in a 0-0 draw with Ahly Tripoli, who hosted the first leg in Egypt because of Libyan instability. The Tunisians have been erratic at home, firing five goals past Ferroviario Beira but only drawing with Al Hilal of Sudan.Ahly have been equally unpredictable on the road, crumbling to USM, holding 2016 runners-up Zamalek in Egypt, and scoring four goals against CAPS United in Zimbabwe.

Biometric machines won't be used in next general elections: ECP

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday announced that biometric machines will not be used for the next general elections scheduled to be held next year, reported Dunya News.According to the ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob, the result of experimental usage of biometric machines was unsatisfactory. “Approximately 12% votes couldn’t be verified, which is a worrying sign,” he said. However ECP will continue to use these biometric machines on experimental basis in by-polls. Their usage will be seen as early as the upcoming by-poll of NA-4.ECP Secretary said that the total voters in the country are 970 million. “If 12% votes are not verified in the general elections, the number of unverified votes will shoot up to 116 million, which is not feasible,” he argued. He said that he doesn’t want people to raise questions about next general elections as well.“In Kenya, recent general elections were held on the basis of biometric machines, but their court rejected them,” he said. He said that ECP has written a letter to the federal government to issue a notification regarding new demarcation of constituencies after recent population census.

Saudi cleric suspended for calling women 'quarter brained'

RIYADH (AFP) - A Saudi cleric who said women should not be allowed to drive because they have a quarter of the brainpower of men has been banned from preaching, the government said Friday.Saad al-Hijri was suspended from leading prayers and all other religious activity in the southern province of Asir after he was widely pilloried on social media for his comment.Hijri said women -- who normally are half-brained compared to men -- end up with only a quarter when they go shopping and therefore must be denied driving licences, according to an online video identifying him as a senior religious figure.Ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia has some of the worlds tightest restrictions on women and is the only country where they are not allowed to drive, despite ambitious government reforms aimed at boosting female employment.Saudi authorities suspend cleric @dr_SaadAlhajri for saying women shouldnt drive bcz their brains shrink to a quarter the size of a man’s pic.twitter.com/i31IVnn1tP— SaadAbedine (@SaadAbedine) September 22, 2017 Under the countrys guardianship system, a male family member -- normally the father, husband or brother -- must grant permission for a womans study, travel and other activities.Hijris comment sparked a storm on social media, with womens rights activists calling for his suspension, but he also had pockets of support from conservative followers. The ban sends a message that preaching platforms will not be used to undercut the values of equality, justice and respect for women that are inherent in Islam, an official statement said, citing a spokesman for Asirs governor.Anyone using preaching platforms to undermine those values will be banned in future.Following his suspension, Hijri said that his comment was a slip of the tongue, according to Sabq online newspaper.
