James Anderson, England's 'king of swing'

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - James Andersons Test career is set to come full circle when he faces the West Indies in the third Test at Lords this week needing just three more scalps to become the first England bowler to take 500 Test wickets. It was at the home of cricket where the 35-year-old Lancashire paceman made his Test debut against Zimbabwe back in 2003 –a match where he took five wickets in the first innings.Andersons greatest skill has been an ability to swing the ball late, a quality that has made him highly effective in English conditions, especially at a swing-friendly Trent Bridge in Nottingham. But no one takes 497 wickets in 128 Tests simply by starring on home soil alone and Andersons career has featured many memorable away successes –notably when he led Englands attack during their 2010/11 Ashes triumph in Australia.Burnley-born Anderson had played just three one-day games for Lancashire when he was called into Englands limited overs squad in Australia as cover for Andy Caddick in 2002/03.He impressed to such an extent he forced his way into Englands squad for the 2003 World Cup in southern Africa. Then came his Test debut. Yet within a couple of years, Anderson had been relegated to the role of a net bowler with England, delivering countless balls at cones in practice sessions. His unusual action, in which Anderson appeared to dip his head at the moment of delivery rather than having eyes firmly fixed on the batsmen, raised eyebrows and he played no part in Englands 2005 Ashes success that saw them end a 19-year wait for a Test series win over Australia.A long-feared stress fracture sidelined him for most of 2006 but come the end of 2007, with the 2005 attack all sidelined, Anderson was the leader of Englands bowling unit.It is a position he has occupied ever since.Jimmy and JamesA bright dyed streak in his hair early in his career belied the fact that Anderson was then an almost painfully shy and even slightly retiring figure. But as his haircut has become ever more conventional, so too has Andersons ability to indulge in sledging or verbal sparring with the opposition become ever more noticeable.Indeed Anderson once said he had to force himself to become increasingly confrontational –a process he likened to being Jimmy on the field and James off it.Numerous statistical landmarks have come his way, with Anderson passing Ian Bothams previous England record of 383 Test wickets in the Caribbean in 2015.Now the reliable close-catcher and often dogged tailender is on the brink of becoming just the sixth bowler and only the third paceman, after West Indies Courtney Walsh and Australias Glenn McGrath, to take 500 Test wickets. But having gone wicketless in the second innings of Englands surprise defeat by the West Indies in the second Test at Headingley –a result that left the three-match series all square at 1-1 –Anderson was philosophical about his chances of joining the 500 club at Lords.Im a bit of a believer in fate, he said.So if its meant to be this week then it will happen –as long as we get the win Im not too fussed.

Skipper Kohli fires India to seven-wicket T20 win against Sri Lanka

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Skipper Virat Kohli hit a blazing half-century as India completed their rout of Sri Lanka on this tour, winning the one-off Twenty20 by seven wickets in Colombo on Wednesday.Chasing 171 for victory, India rode on a 119-run second-wicket stand between Kohli (82) and Manish Pandey (51 not out) to achieve their target with four balls to spare. The visitors remained unbeaten in their nine matches against Sri Lanka as they won the Test and one-day series 3-0 and 5-0 respectively.Very special, it (whitewash across formats) hasnt been done before. Credit to all the hard work that the boys have put in over the past couple of months in all formats of the game, said a delighted Kohli.Thats evidence of the fact how hungry the players are in Indian cricket. The bench strength is coming through so beautifully...results are amazing to see as a captain, he added.Kohli, who received the man of the match award, remained calm in a tricky chase with Pandey for company after India lost their openers for 42 runs in the sixth over.Rohit Sharma fell to veteran paceman Lasith Malinga for nine and Lokesh Rahul was done in by a superb catch by Dasun Shanaka at short cover off Seekkuge Prasanna. But Kohli took the attack to the opposition with 7 fours and a six during his 54-ball knock before falling to Isuru Udana with India requiring just 10 runs to win.Pandey finished off the game with a boundary that brought his maiden T20 fifty in 36 balls. We knew one good partnership will get us through. So it was about staying calm in the middle...and Manish was outstanding today. That partnership was very crucial, said Kohli.Earlier leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal played his part by claiming three wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 170-7 after being put into bat first.Dilshan Munaweera hit a 29-ball 53 before Ashan Priyanjan scored a run-a-ball 40 not out to lift the Sri Lankan total after a middle-order collapse. The hosts slipped from 99-3 to 113-6 before Priyanjan put on crucial partnerships with lower-order batsmen including a 36-run unbeaten stand with number nine Udana, who hit a 10-ball 19.We were 15-20 runs short. We had a good start. Munaweera batted really well, but we lost momentum from overs 10-14, said a disappointed Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga. The way Virat batted was outstanding. He was an example for everyone, especially with his energy and running between the wickets, he added.

England recall Roland-Jones for West Indies decider

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England have recalled Toby Roland-Jones for the third and final Test against the West Indies at the Middlesex pacemans Lords home ground, skipper Joe Root said Wednesday.Roland-Jones is the only change to the side that suffered a surprise five-wicket defeat by the West Indies in the second Test at Headingley as the tourists levelled the three-match series at 1-1.The 29-year-old, who made his debut in the recent home series win over South Africa, was omitted despite taking 14 wickets at under 20 apiece in his first three Tests and was replaced in Leeds by Chris Woakes. Now, however, the roles are reversed with Roland-Jones coming back into the side at Warwickshire all-rounder Woakess expense.Home conditions, he (Roland-Jones) obviously knows the surfaces and is bowling very well at the moment, Root told reporters at Lords on Wednesday when asked to explain the change in his XI.Its obviously very difficult to leave somebody like Chris out, hes been a consistent performer in Test cricket for England. But this is a team I think is going to win this week, star batsman Root added the day before Thursdays start.Theres plenty of cricket to be played throughout the rest of this summer and he (Woakes) is a fantastic performer across all formats. I fully expect him to come back strong.

Bangladesh strike back after Warner ton

CHITTAGONG (AFP) - David Warner hit his second hundred in a row before Bangladesh fought back with quick strikes on a rain-hit third day of the second Test against Australia on Wednesday. The visitors were 377-9 when bad light stopped play with 13 overs remaining after rain washed out the entire first session at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury stadium in Chittagong.Australia now lead by 72 runs with Steve OKeefe on eight and Nathan Lyon, who was yet to open his account, at the crease. Bangladesh, who elected to bat first, made 305.Mustafizur Rahman and Mehedi Hasan took three wickets each to bring Bangladesh back into the contest after Warner and Peter Handscomb put on 152 runs for the third wicket.Warner showed remarkable patience during his uncharacteristically sedate 123 that came off 234 balls. This was Warners 20th Test century and second in successive innings, having made 112 in the first match which Australia lost by 20 runs in Dhaka. He was dismissed by left-arm paceman Mustafizur, who was celebrating his 22nd birthday. The century saw Warner join a select group of 12 Australian cricketers who have scored 20 or more Test tons, with his skipper Steve Smith the most recent to achieve the feat.Warner, who resumed the day on 88, received good support from Handscomb, who made 82 off 144 balls before being run out by a sharp throw from Shakib Al Hasan at midwicket.Handscomb responded to a call for a single that would have completed Warners century but was sent back from halfway down the pitch.Bangladesh were then frustrated as Mehedi dropped Glenn Maxwell on 10 at gully off Mustafizur.Mehedi put down Hilton Cartwright off his own bowling on six, before making amends by having the same batsman caught at slip by Soumya Sarkar for 18 on the stroke of tea.Mehedi removed Maxwell (38) and Pat Cummins (four) after the break and Shakib bowled Ashton Agar for his only wicket in the day.

Mourinho lauds United's transfer savings

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jose Mourinho says Manchester United made huge savings in the transfer market by getting their business done before Neymars world record move to Paris Saint-Germain triggered a global price spike.Mourinho paid a British record fee of 75 million ($97 million, 82 million euros) for Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and took his spending to over 130 million with swoops for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Benfica defender Victor Lindelof.Since those deals were completed, French giants PSG have broken the world record with a 200 million move for Barcelona star Neymar.United boss Mourinho believes if his club had waited to land their top targets they would have paid significantly increased fees as a result.Praising United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward for predicting the market surge, Mourinho told The Times: I think we were very clever. We thought that something could happen that could change the market forever.Normally the last part of the market is less expensive, but this season, after Neymar, everything changed and changed for the worse in terms of prices.I think Lukaku on August 31 would have been 150 million. Matic would have been 60 million or 70 million. Neymar changed everything. If the biggest transfer in history had still been Pogba, I think (Liverpool forward) Philippe Coutinho would now be in Barcelona at 101 million. People look to the 200 million figure now.Throughout his glittering career, Mourinho has been criticised for only staying at clubs for relatively short periods. But the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Porto coach, who is in his second season with United, insists he always leaves teams in better shape than he finds them.I think I prepare clubs in a way where, when I leave, the new manager arrives at a top club. And that is not short-term even if you leave, he said.I dont need a new contract (with United) to work to my limits. I dont have a problem to arrive at the end of my contract and be free to decide what I want to do and the club free to decide what they want to do.Mourinhos focus for now is on mounting a strong title challenge and his revamped team look well-equipped for the job after storming to the top of the table with three successive wins.I have said three (summer) transfer windows is what I need to have the team I think can bring Manchester United to the top of English football, Mourinho said.I still think we need that, but Im not going to wait for the third transfer window to try to reach it.

Seven killed as Bangladesh police raid extremist hideout

DHAKA (AFP) - At least seven people including two children were killed in an explosion after Bangladesh government forces raided the suspected hideout of a top Islamist extremist, police said Wednesday. Two women were also among those killed in the blast at a five-storey building that was raided by the elite Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) early Tuesday after a tip-off that a top Islamist extremist was holed up there.Seven bodies were found. They are all burnt, RAB spokesman Mufti Mahmud told AFP, adding that the bodies were too damaged to be identified. He said the hideout at Dhakas Mirpur area belonged to Abdullah, a daring Islamist extremist of JMB (Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh), the homegrown outfit blamed for a wave of deadly attacks in recent years. There was a explosion in his room. Seven people who were in the room died in the explosion, he said. The RAB is tasked with tackling Islamist extremism in Muslim majority Bangladesh.Officers cordoned off the building for nearly 24 hours and gave the alleged extremist the chance to surrender, they said. The Bangladesh government blames the JMB for a series of attacks in recent years on foreigners, atheist bloggers, rights activists and religious minorities. In the deadliest of these attacks, five gunmen stormed an upscale Dhaka cafe in July 2016, killing 22 people including 18 foreigners. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack. But the police and the government blamed JMB for the carnage, discounting suggestions that IS had a foothold in Bangladesh.
