Ali's rapid ton too much for West Indies

Posted:

BRISTOL, United Kingdom (AFP) - Moeen Alis blazing century set up Englands 124-run victory over West Indies in the third one-day international at Bristol on Sunday as the hosts went 2-0 up with two to play in a five-match series.Alis 53-ball ton saw his second fifty come off just 12 deliveries, a world record dash by an ODI batsman from 50-100, and was the cornerstone of Englands 369 for nine.I enjoyed myself, Ali told Sky Sports. I just tried to slog it as much as I could.West Indies were in with a chance so long as the big-hitting Chris Gayle was making 94.But when the veteran opener, who missed the rainswept no-result in the second ODI at Trent Bridge on Thursday with a hamstring injury suffered warming up on his 38th birthday, was run out the tourists hopes of winning disappeared with him.West Indies were eventually dismissed for 245, with fast bowler Liam Plunkett taking five for 52 -- his maiden ODI five-wicket haul -- as England won with 65 balls to spare.Earlier, all-rounder Ali scored nearly half his via eight sixes, before he fell for 102.Englands total was their largest in a one-day international against West Indies, surpassing their 328 for seven at Edgbaston in 2009, and their fifth-largest in this format overall.Alis hundred was also the second quickest by an England batsman at this level after Jos Buttlers 46-ball ODI century against Pakistan in Dubai in 2015.England lost three wickets for 11 runs to be 217 for six in the 35th over. But a partnership of 117 in 76 balls between Ali, a left-handed batsman, and Chris Woakes (34) turned the tide in a match that featured 28 sixes in total.Joe Root (84) and Ben Stokes (73) had laid the platform for a large total with a fourth-wicket stand of 132 in 20 overs. With Ali leading the charge, England scored 123 runs in their last 10 overs after being sent into bat.Alis six-hitting assault really got going as England scored a remarkable 50 runs in two overs -- the 45 and 46th of their innings. He should have been out for 87 when he smashed a Jerome Taylor full toss to point only for Gayle to drop the catch at point.Ali went to his century with two sixes in three balls off Miguel Cummins -- a pull over deep square leg followed by a soaring drive over long-on.He eventually holed out off spinner Ashley Nurse and received a standing ovation from a near-capacity crowd.England captain Eoin Morgan, whose poor run of form with the bat continued with a golden duck, hailed Alis man-of-the-match effort.Moeen Alis innings was the difference between the sides, certainly with the batting anyway, he said.Meanwhile West Indies captain Jason Holder was left to lament his sides inability to build on a promising start, their cause not aided by some sloppy fielding as they suffered a 14th defeat in 15 completed ODIs against England. We leaked runs at the death and we paid for it, Holder said.We need to be better in the field. The players need to take the ownership on themselves.West Indies opener Evin Lewis hit two sixes in David Willeys first over before the left-arm quick had him caught at mid-on by Ali.Plunkett then had both Shai Hope (20) and Marlon Samuels (11) caught behind, the latter on a tight review.Gayle, who wrote the book on one-day power hitting, struck off-spinner Ali for three straight sixes in as many balls while the floodlights pierced the increasing gloom. But the wicket England wanted came when Gayle just failed to beat Adil Rashids direct hit from midwicket and was run out, having faced 78 balls including nine fours and six sixes. That left West Indies 176 for four in the 27th over and there was no way back for them from there.Englands star men combined to end the match when Holder (34) holed out off Plunkett to Ali at long-off.The series continues at The Oval on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka to cooperate with corruption probe

Posted:

COLOMBO (AFP) - Sri Lankas cricket board Sunday asked all national players and its employees to cooperate fully with an ICC investigation following allegations by former players of match-fixing and other forms of corruption.Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said its executive committee had directed players and staff to cooperate with investigators from the anti-corruption unit of the International Cricket Council, which announced its investigation on Saturday. We request all those who have any information to come forward and help with this inquiry by declaring all their information and evidence... it said in a statement. The board said unsubstantiated allegations made by former skipper Arjuna Ranatunga and ex-player and national selector Pramodya Wickremasinghe were damaging the reputation of our players, our cricket and our nation. We are committed to working closely with the ICC to complete this inquiry expeditiously and give our players the freedom to concentrate on playing their cricket, the board said.It did not say what exactly was being probed and whether a particular individual or group was being investigated. The ICC announced the probe a day after SLC said that 40 contracted national team players had asked for an immediate inquiry into shocking allegations by Wickremasinghe.Wickremasinghe, a former pace bowler and ex-national selector, told a local television station last week he was concerned about unnatural match patterns and player selections. He also blamed the SLC for the teams poor performance. The SLC maintained that players had refuted Wickremasinghes allegations as totally baseless and added that they performed for their motherland... with a 200 percent commitment.Sri Lanka recently suffered the embarrassment of losing all nine international matches in a home campaign against India.Virat Kohlis visitors took the Test series 3-0 and then won a one-day international series 5-0 before triumphing in the lone Twenty20 international by seven wickets in Colombo earlier this month.Wickremasinghes allegations are not the first to swirl around the Sri Lanka team.In July former captain Ranatunga -- who led the islanders to the 1996 World Cup title -- demanded an inquiry into the teams defeat by India in the 2011 final in Mumbai. When we lost, I was distressed and I had a doubt, Ranatunga said in July.We must investigate what happened to Sri Lanka at the 2011 World Cup final. I cannot reveal everything now, but one day I will. There must be an inquiry.

Wave of protests in NFL after Trump criticism

LOS ANGELES: (AFP) - A wave of protests swept National Football League games on Sunday after US President Donald Trump called for players demonstrating against racial inequality during the national anthem to be fired.Dozens of players at several games across the league chose to kneel during the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner, in the largest such demonstration since the protests first began in 2016.The first mass protest took place at the NFLs London game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens at Wembley Stadium.A large number of players from both teams knelt during the playing of the anthem while others stood with their arms interlocked.Among those linking arms with the players was Jacksonville owner Shad Khan, who donated $1 million to Trumps election campaign in 2016.Khan later issued a statement decrying Trumps recent comments as divisive and contentious.Thats why it was important for us, and personally for me, to show the world that even if we may differ at times, we can and should be united in the effort to become better as people and a nation, Khan said. The London protests were emulated across the United States as matches kicked off.In Foxborough, around 15 members of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots kneeled during the national anthem.Star quarterback Tom Brady linked arms with his team-mates. Patriots owner Robert Kraft, a friend of Trump who also donated to his campaign, issued a statement saying he was deeply disappointed by Trumps remarks on Friday. In Chicago, the Pittsburgh Steelers chose to remain in their locker room during the anthem ahead of their clash with the Bears.Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, who is black, said the decision was not intended to be disrespectful but rather calculated to remove ourselves from the circumstance. These are very divisive times for our country, Tomlin told CBS television. For us as a football team, its about remaining solid.A lone Steelers player -- former Army Ranger Alejandro Villanueva -- stood just outside the players tunnel to observe the anthem. In Detroit meanwhile, the singer of the national anthem Rico LaVelle dramatically dropped to his knee at the end of his rendition. At least eight Detroit Lions players were seen kneeling during the anthem while others linked arms ahead of their game with the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons players including team owner Arthur Blank also joined arms.More than 20 Cleveland Browns players kneeled during the anthem for their game against the Colts in Indianapolis.

Five things we learned in the Premier League

Posted:

LONDON: (AFP) - The Manchester clubs kept control of the title race, Alvaro Morata scored his first Chelsea hat-trick and Liverpools Philippe Coutinho began to redeem himself for angling to join Barcelona. Here are five things we learned in the Premier League this weekend:Aguero remains a central figure for Man CityThe writing appeared to be on the wall for Sergio Aguero at Manchester City last season when Gabriel Jesuss arrival in January saw him lose his place in the side. But an injury to Jesus brought Aguero back into the team and his performances convinced manager Pep Guardiola to begin this season with both players in his starting XI.When Guardiola switched to a one-striker configuration against Crystal Palace, it was Jesus who made way and he was not missed as Aguero struck in a 5-0 rout that left City top of the table. The Argentina striker has now scored 176 goals for City and needs just two more to surpass Eric Brook as the clubs all-time leading scorer.Morata showed Chelsea can thrive without CostaWhen Antonio Conte signed Alvaro Morata from Real Madrid in the close season, some critics suggested the Spain striker would not be an adequate replacement for Diego Costa given the unique physical demands of the Premier League.Whereas Costa is all snarling aggression and muscular power, Morata relies more on movement and subtle technique to outwit defenders. But the 24-year-old has made a quick transition to the English game and bagged his first Chelsea hat-trick in Saturdays 4-0 rout of Stoke City to take his tally for the club to six goals. In the week that Chelsea finally agreed a deal to allow Costa to return to Atletico Madrid, Morata showed the champions can move on with minimum fuss.Coutinho has started his redemption tourLess than a month ago, Philippe Coutinho was in danger of becoming Public Enemy Number One at Anfield as the Liverpool playmaker tried to force through a move to Barcelona. When Liverpool refused to sell him, he was left in a potentially awkward situation. But manager Jurgen Klopp has handled the situation deftly, treating Coutinho respectfully without giving in to his demands.Back in the starting line-up at Leicester City, Coutinho showed his class by teeing up Mohamed Salah for Liverpools opener before curling in a sublime free-kick that set his side up for a 3-2 win.More performances like this and his transfer saga will soon be a distant memory.Lukaku has given Man United a new dimensionBy the admission of manager Jose Mourinho, Manchester United were not at their fluid best in their 1-0 win at Southampton. It was the sort of game United would not have won last season, when their league-high 15 draws contributed to a disappointing sixth-place finish. But new striker Romelu Lukaku gives them greater cutting edge and his 20th-minute goal settled the game, the Belgium striker finishing at the second attempt after Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster parried his header.United have made their best start to a season since 2011-12 and Lukaku is only the second player (after Louis Saha) to have scored six goals in his first six games for the club in the Premier League era.Spurs must iron out Auriers rough edgesSerge Auriers full Premier League debut for Tottenham Hotspur showcased the best and worst of the controversial Ivory Coast international. He got forward well and helped to tee up Christian Eriksen for what proved to be the decisive goal in a 3-2 success at London rivals West Ham United. But the Paris Saint-Germain old boy was frequently caught out of position and was sent off with 20 minutes remaining after being shown a second yellow card for needlessly scything down Andy Carroll.Tottenham led 3-1 at that stage and had it not been for Aurier, they would have seen the game out much more comfortably.

'Approval of electoral reforms bill in Senate an embarrassment for PTI'

Posted:

He said that Peshawar High Court Chief Justice was agreed upon to recruit Director General for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ehtesab Commission. He said that nobody has an evidence to back allegations against Pervez Khattak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister.PTI chief said that there is no Ehtesab Commission chief in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for over a year because Peshawar High Court is to appoint an official now.Khan said that Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organisation chief is a competent young man who could get double the amount of salary in private sector than what he is earning in the public sector however, he is determined to change the fate of Pakistan and the locals.Imran Khan claimed that the statusquo turned against the honest man. He asserted that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has received foreign investment through the energy development organisation.Big political parties defy the top court and appoint chairmen of key institutions as per their will, Khan said.He said that the political parties have destroyed democratic norms in Pakistan and complain of derailment of democracy.
