UN condemns 'highly provocative' N. Korea missile launch

Posted:

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) - The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned North Koreas highly provocative launch of a missile that flew over Japan as US President Donald Trump scheduled talks with leaders of Japan and South Korea to address the crisis.North Korea fired the intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new UN sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight. In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council said the launch was carried out just three weeks after a first missile overflew Japan and less than two weeks after Pyongyangs sixth and biggest nuclear test. The council strongly condemned these launches, condemned further the DPRK for its outrageous actions, and demanded that the DPRK immediately cease all such actions. The statement, released after a closed-door meeting, did not threaten further sanctions and stressed that all countries must fully, comprehensively and immediately be implemented. The launch came days after the council slapped fresh sanctions on the isolated country in response to the nuclear test on September 3.In Washington, the White House announced Trump will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Koreas Moon Jae-in in New York Thursday. As Kim Jong-Uns most recent launch demonstrates, this is one of the worlds most urgent and dangerous security problems, US National Security Advisor H.R McMaster said.North Korea will dominate the diplomatic agenda when world leaders gather at the United Nations next week for the annual high-level General Assembly debate.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he plans to hold talks with all sides on the crisis, including with North Koreas Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho, who will address the General Assembly Friday.Russian President Vladimir Putin and his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron jointly appealed for talks with North Korea, saying this was the only way to resolve tensions over its nuclear program. The crisis requires resolution exclusively through political and diplomatic means, by restarting direct negotiations, a Kremlin statement said following a phone call between the leaders. The appeal was directed at the United States and Japan, countries calling to ramp up pressure through sanctions rather than pin hopes on talks.Russia and China, North Koreas main ally, on Monday backed a US-drafted resolution at the Security Council to impose fresh sanctions on Pyongyang -- but they maintain dialogue is key to defuse the crisis.Washington has rejected as insulting a proposal from China to kick-start talks with a freeze on North Koreas nuclear and missile tests in exchange for a suspension of US-South Korean drills. The sanctions imposed on Monday banned the Norths textile trade, stopped new work permits for its laborers, and imposed restrictions on shipments of oil products, among other measures. The US Pacific Command confirmed Fridays rocket was an intermediate range ballistic missile (IRBM) and said it did not pose a threat to North America or to the US Pacific territory of Guam, which Pyongyang has threatened to bracket with enveloping fire.Seouls defense ministry said it probably traveled around 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) and reached a maximum altitude of 770 kilometers.Physicist David Wright, of the Union of Concerned Scientists, said: North Korea demonstrated that it could reach Guam with this missile, although the payload the missile was carrying is not known and its accuracy was in doubt. The North has raised global tensions with its rapid progress in weapons technology under leader Kim Jong-Un, who is regularly pictured by state media overseeing launches and visiting facilities. The Norths last missile launch, a Hwasong-12 IRBM just over two weeks ago, also overflew Japans main islands and was the first to do so for years.Millions of Japanese were jolted awake by blaring sirens and emergency text message alerts.Missile launch missile launch A missile appears to have been launched from North Korea, loudspeakers blared on Cape Erimo, on Hokkaidos southern tip.Breakfast television programs replaced their usual light-hearted diet of childrens shows and gadget features with the warning: Flee into a building or a basement.Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Tokyo could never tolerate what he called a dangerous provocative action that threatens world peace. The missile was said to have overflown the US ally for around two minutes. In response to the launch, South Koreas military immediately carried out a ballistic missile drill of its own, with the defense ministry saying it took place while the Norths rocket was still airborne.President Moon Jae-In told an emergency meeting of Seouls national security council that dialogue with the North was impossible in a situation like this.

Trump warns North Korea of 'overwhelming' options

JOINT BASE ANDREWS (AFP) - Standing before a B-2 stealth bomber and a vast US flag, Donald Trump on Friday lashed out at North Korea warned that advanced US weaponry could make the souls of Americas enemies crumble.Addressing several hundred air force personnel after reviewing some of Americas most high-tech fighters jets and bombers, Trump warned that Pyongyang had once again shown its utter contempt for its neighbors and for the entire world community. After seeing our capabilities, I am more confident than ever that our options are not only effective but overwhelming, Trump said. The UN Security Council on Friday strongly condemned North Koreas highly provocative missile launch and demanded Pyongyang immediately halt such actions -- but did not threaten further sanctions.North Korea fired the intermediate-range ballistic missile over Japan that landed in the Pacific, responding to new UN sanctions with its furthest-ever missile flight. In a unanimous statement backed by China, the council said the launch was carried out just three weeks after a first missile overflew Japan and less than two weeks after Pyongyangs sixth and biggest nuclear test.US President Donald Trump has scheduled talks with leaders of Japan and South Korea to address the crisis.

Russia, Iran, Turkey to police Syria Idlib safe zone

Posted:

ASTANA (AFP) - Russia, Iran and Turkey on Friday agreed a deal to jointly police a fourth safe zone around Syrias Idlib province as part of a Moscow-led plan to ease the six-year conflict. In a joint statement after two days of talks in Kazakhstan the three powers said they agreed to allocate their forces to patrol the zone covering rebel-held Idlib province and parts of the neighbouring Latakia, Hama and Aleppo regions. The talks in Astana are the sixth round of negotiations Moscow has spearheaded since the start of the year as it seeks to pacify Syria after its game-changing intervention on the side of leader Bashar al-Assad.Like Russia, Iran supports the Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey has sided with the rebels.Russia had previously deployed military police to patrol the boundaries of three zones agreed in the south of Syria, in Eastern Ghouta near Damascus, and in part of the central Homs province.Idlib, which borders Turkey, was captured in 2015 by an alliance of jihadists and rebels. The statement said the forces would be deployed according to maps agreed earlier this month in Ankara, but gave no further details of their exact positions.A joint Russia-Turkish-Iranian coordination centre will be set up aimed at coordinating activities of deescalation forces, it said. Both the Syrian government and the armed opposition sent delegations to the talks. The joint declaration also stated that further talks would be held in the Kazakh capital at the end of October.

Pakistan celebrate cricket return with series triumph

Posted:

LAHORE (AFP) - Pakistan celebrated the return of international cricket with a thumping 33-run win to clinch the final Twenty20 match and the series against a World XI team at Lahores Gaddafi stadium Friday. The hosting of the short series is a major step towards convincing international teams to begin touring Pakistan again, with Sri Lanka already due to play a Twenty20 match in Lahore on October 29.Foreign teams have refused to tour Pakistan since a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore in March 2009.Under Sarfraz Ahmed, Pakistan team outplayed the World XI -- with cricketers from seven countries -- in Fridays decider to match the important occasion by claiming the series 2-1.Pakistan had won the first match by 20 runs on Tuesday before World XI levelled the series with a seven-wicket victory in the second on Wednesday.World XI captain Faf du Plessis hailed the series as a big step and success. This has been a huge success, said du Plessis. We wanted to come here and play a small part in cricket coming back to Pakistan. Thank everyone for the opportunity for coming here.We were joking about it, the blokes were saying we should do this every year. For a lot of guys who dont play a lot of international cricket these days, this was terrific competition against a strong Pakistan side.Batting for World XI, only Thisara Perera, with a 13-ball 32 including three sixes and two fours, and David Miller, who hit a 29-ball 32, made significant contributions.Others never got going in a shaky chase which saw three World XI batsmen run out. Pakistan pacer Hasan Ali finished as the best bowler with figures of 2-28.Pakistan had piled up 183-4 after they were sent into bat by World Xi skipper Faf du Plessis.Pakistans innings was built around opener Ahmed Shehzads 55-ball 89 and a 31-ball 48 by Babar Zaman. The two added 102 runs for the second wicket after Pakistan lost Fakhar Zaman for 27.Shehzad fell 11 short of his second Twenty20 hundred as he attempted a single off a wide ball. He cracked eight boundaries and three sixes. His and Pakistans only hundred in a Twenty20 international had come against Bangladesh during the World Twenty20 tournament in 2014.Shoaib Malik hit two sixes in his seven-ball 17 not out as Pakistan added 58 in the final five overs to reach 183.Sri Lankan seamer Perera was the pick of World XIs bowlers with 2-37 in his four overs.During the innings break the Pakistan Cricket Board arranged a lap of honour for retired greats Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq. The two were given a standing ovation by a packed 25,000 crowd. The series was arranged as part of Pakistans efforts to bring back international cricket to the country, which has only hosted Zimbabwe for a limited-over series in 2015.Pakistan hopes the successful staging of this series will help them host Sri Lanka for a Twenty20 international on October 29, at the end of their full series in the United Arab Emirates.A month later they are also likely to host the West Indies for three Twenty20 matches.

West Indies' Brathwaite wants to show he's no T20 'one-hit wonder'

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Carlos Brathwaite wants to prove his World Twenty20-winning heroics were no fluke when he leads West Indies against England in a repeat of the 2016 final at Chester-le-Street on Saturday.England had one hand on the trophy until a last over where, in a superb display of clean hitting, Brathwaite struck four successive sixes off rival all-rounder Ben Stokes in Kolkata in May last year.It was the highlight of a West Indies career which has yielded just three Test and 23 one-day international appearances for Brathwaite to date. The 29-year-old Bajan did not feature in West Indies recent 2-1 Test series loss in England and has not been selected for the five ODIs that follow Saturdays lone Twenty20 of the tour at Durhams Riverside headquarters -- Stokess home ground. While thankful for having won West Indies a trophy off his own bat, Brathwaites goal now is for consistent international success. Its something I cant get away from...they even have us playing at his (Stokess) home ground, said Brathwaite on Friday.Social media wont let me forget it, theres been a few videos going around of late. It wasnt just a boundary or a six, it was four in a row. It was on the stage it was, it was against England and in India. He added: I probably still cant believe it happened but thankfully we have a T20 World Cup and I have a fantastic story to tell my kids, with the video footage to prove Im not telling a lie.I just want to move on in my career. It was a fantastic achievement and Im privileged I was the one to make it possible but your career goes on long after that. Many Durham fans bought tickets in the expectation that local hero Stokes, a mainstay in all three formats for England, would be involved this weekend.England, however, have taken the controversial decision to rest him from Saturdays clash. To some in Durham it was yet another slap in the face from the England and Wales Cricket Board, who took the unprecedented step of relegating the side from the First Division of the County Championship in October and then hit them with a massive 48-point penalty for this season in return for a 3.8 million pound (4.3 million euros) bail-out that stopped the club going out of business in May last year. However, England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan defended the decision to stand Stokes down from Saturdays clash by arguing the move could yet prove beneficial ahead of the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia.I can see both sides of it, of course guys want to see him play, said Morgan. And if there wasnt an injury risk down the line or a huge Ashes tour coming up potentially he might be able to play. Its unfortunate it has to be a game at his home ground but we have to stay strong with the decisions and the plans we have so down the line we dont regret playing him in a one-off game.Morgan insisted England had put their Kolkata hurt behind them, with Stokes and Brathwaite having played a one-day international against each other since their most famous encounter. Its nothing to us, he said. Its a long time ago. Ben has obviously learnt a lot since then, become a more senior, more experienced player since then and hes better for the experience. We played West Indies in March and Ben bowled at Carlos...he got him out in the last game.

England's Morgan eager for Windies T20 clash

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - England limited overs captain Eoin Morgan is keen to see how his side fares against an experienced West Indies team in Saturdays lone Twenty20 international at Chester-le-Street.The fixture is the only Twenty20 fixture before the two sides begin a five-match one-day international series, which gets underway in Manchester next week.England recently won a three-match Test series 2-1, after West Indies, belying their reputation as a weak outfit in crickets longest format, upset the odds to win the second Test at Headingley. But the upcoming white-ball clashes are set to see West Indies, who beat England in the 2016 World Twenty20 final in Kolkata, India, bolstered by the likes of powerful opening batsman Chris Gayle. They probably have a bit more experience (than their Test squad) which is great, Morgan told Sky Sports at Chester-le-Street on Friday. We want to play against the best possible side available to play in order to try and improve our game, the Middlesex batsman added. Were a very young side and we have a long way to go in T20 cricket. Our consistency levels have been up and down so its all to play for tomorrow. While acknowledging the presence of several strong ball-strikers in West Indies line-up, former Ireland international Morgan said England had batting firepower of their own.Its one of their strengths, he said. Its probably one of our strengths as well. Its going to be a really exciting game.

Smith bats for peace ahead of India ODIs

Posted:

CHENNAI (AFP) - Australia skipper Steve Smith is anxious to halt the acrimony that marked Test matches against India this year when the two powerhouses start a one-day international series Sunday.Smith had a much-publicised war of words with India counterpart Virat Kohli when Australia lost the Test series 2-1 in March. The combative Australian skipper said ahead of the first one-day clash in Chennai that he hoped the five-match series would be played in good spirit.During a Test in Bangalore this year, Kohli expressed displeasure after Smith looked up to his own dressing room -- where replays could be seen by teammates -- while deciding whether to challenge an lbw dismissal.Players are not allowed to have outside input while challenging an umpires decision. While Smith later apologised for his self-admitted brain fade moment, Kohli slammed the Aussies at the last series press conference in Dharamsala.I think it will be played in good spirit. It is a hard-fought contest playing against India, Smith said of the upcoming series which also features three Twenty20 matches.I am not too concerned about the differences with Kohli. He is obviously a very good player and has a phenomenal ODI record.Hopefully, we can keep him quiet as much as possible in this series. If we do that then hopefully it can go a long way in us having success on this tour, he added.Former captain Michael Clarke also saw a carrot for the Australians, who will topple South Africa from top spot in the ODI table if they can beat India 4-1. A reverse result will make India number one.The tourists, coming out of a tough two-Test series in Bangladesh that ended 1-1, are confident of doing well against the in-form hosts.Returning all-rounder James Faulkner, looking to resurrect his career after losing a central contract, believes stints by Smith and other Australians in the Indian Premier League will help.Theres a lot of experience in that changing room playing in the subcontinent. Most of the boys have played enough here with the IPL and other series and the T20 World Cup, said Faulkner. The right-hand batsman and left-arm bowler is set to bolster Australias pace attack along with Nathan Coulter-Nile and Pat Cummins.Left-arm Ashton Agar took four wickets and batsman Marcus Stoinis hit a blazing half-century in the only warm-up game in Chennai on Tuesday to lay their claims for a starting place.India are in rampaging form after having recently blanked Sri Lanka 9-0 in Tests, one day games and T20.They will again bank on rookie spinners Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal to counter the Australian batting, with veterans Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja still rested.Indias fast bowling line-up looks more experienced than their opponents after the return of pace spearhead Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav. We have some plans for each of their batsmen -- especially Smith and (David) Warner. The key is about executing it on the field, said Shami.Australia are a strong team. Its difficult to say that (a clean sweep) but we will try our best for a good show. The conditions will play a big role, he added.Australia lost their ODI series in India 3-2 in 2013, but humbled India 4-1 at home in 2016.India (for first three ODIs):Virat Kohli (capt), Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, Ajinkya Rahane, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami.Australia:Steve Smith (capt), David Warner, Ashton Agar, Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Patrick Cummins, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.

Vatican recalls diplomat from US in child porn probe

Posted:

VATICAN CITY (AFP) - The Vatican has recalled a priest serving as an envoy in Washington and opened a child pornography investigation after US officials asked the church to lift his diplomatic immunity. The Vatican said Friday that US officials complained in August of a possible violation of laws relating to child pornography images by a member of the diplomatic corps of the Holy See.In Washington, a State Department official confirmed to AFP that the diplomat in question had been allowed to leave the United States because he enjoys immunity from criminal prosecution. The United States formally requested that the Nunciature waive diplomatic immunity for the individual, but the Nunciature declined to do so, the official said, on condition of anonymity.Neither the church nor US officials named the priest -- one of four assigned to the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican embassy in Washington -- but the Vatican said an investigation is underway. The Vatican press service said efforts had been made through international collaboration to obtain elements relative to the case, suggesting that Rome is seeking evidence from US officials. But with the investigation at a preliminary stage, the case is subject to confidentiality, the Vatican said. The State Department referred questions about the investigation to the Vatican, and US officials made it clear that they expect church authorities to take the matter seriously. The United States condemns the abuse and exploitation of children wherever it exists, and we offer sincere condolences to victims, the official said. The official noted that Pope Francis has vowed to act decisively with regard to cases of sexual abuse -- after decades of scandals that have dogged the Catholic Church around the globe. The United States encourages the Holy See to ensure full implementation of its reforms and policies designed to protect minors and provide justice regarding allegations, he said.We would refer you to Vatican officials on the current state of those efforts. The withdrawal of the Washington priest is not the first time that a Vatican diplomat has been caught up in such a scandal -- and the last case was particularly embarrassing for the church. In 2013, Polish priest Jozef Wesolowski was recalled as the papal nuncio or ambassador from the Dominican Republic, after press reports that he had paid for sexual encounters with children.Internet downloadsThe Vatican refused to extradite Wesolowksi to Poland to face trial, but an ecclesiastical court found him guilty and he was defrocked -- the maximum penalty then available. But Pope Francis, whose elevation in March 2013 raised hopes for church reform, ordered that Wesolowski face criminal charges for child abuse, a first in Vatican history. The accused was held under house arrest but he died in August 2015, aged 67, on the eve of his trial. He had been charged with sexual assault on children aged 13 to 16 and with possession of a large quantity of child pornography, downloaded from the internet after his return to Rome.He faced up to seven years in jail if convicted.Details of the latest case involving the Washington-based priest remain confidential, but Vatican authorities have passed the case to the Promoter of Justice of the Vatican Tribunal.

WICB chief 'hopeful' for T20 series in Pakistan subject to FICA's approval

Posted:

(Web Desk) - West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Chairman Dave Cameron on Friday was hopeful that the peaceful organization of the World XI tour will increase the chances of a three match T-20 series to be held Pakistan in November. He said this during a joint press conference with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, reported Dunya News.“We can empathize with Pakistan, because the problems Pakistan is facing in arranging these tours, we face similar circumstances back home,” Cameron said. West Indies cricket team has always been compared with Pakistan becuase of the unpredictability of both teams and the flair with which they playHe said that since former West Indies captain Darren Sammy had toured Pakistan twice and Samuel Badree has toured with the World XI team, their experiences will make it easier for other players to decide based. Cameron appreciated PCB’s efforts in reviving cricket in Pakistan. He said that the passionate people of Pakistan deserve to watch cricket at their own grounds.A few months ago West Indies were also certain to tour Pakistan but Federation of International Cricketers’ Association (FICA) had warned against letting the players to tour Pakistan. However, Dav Cameron while answering a question said that just like the players and security teams who visited Pakistan for the Pakistan Super League (PSL) final gave their feedback about the security arrangements to FICA.The World XI team and International Cricket Council (ICC) officials accompanying them will give their feedback to FICA which will hopefully convince them to allow players to tour Pakistan. It is understood that the arrangements made for the World XI tour were made independently by the ICC and FICA’s consent is necessary when bilateral series are being played.PCB is also in talks with Sri Lankan Cricket Board to stage the third T20 of the T20 series with Sri Lanka, due to be held in United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Lahore. However, after the peaceful organization of the World XI series has increased the chances of the Sri Lankan T20 to be held in Pakistan.
